Bronchopulmonary dysplasia

He held the baby in both his paws. It was so small that his paw was bigger than it.

It seemed to be sleeping, it's little chest rising and falling.

And how its little tiny nose twitched every now and then made the fox's heart melt.

He looked over at his fìancè who was holding the all grey one, August. Judy was draped in hospital sheets and looked excited. Though it was their last day at the hospital, they refused to leave until they hear the results of Aleah, also known as the baby diagnosed with chronic lung disease.
And both Judy and Nick knew, but they haven't seen their daughter since the birth of her. Doctor Richmoore explained that they were going to run several more test on the infants because there's never been Interspecies babies so that could and has caused problems during the pregnancy.

Nick smiled as he looked at Judy holding his son on the hospital bed. Though the kits couldn't open their eyes yet, they still looked adorable. "Happy over there, carrots?" The fox teased.

Judy sighed but smiled, "Kinda.  I'm a little upset."

Nick raised his eyebrows, "How so?"

"Well...if Aleah doesn't..somehow make it, we still have two beautiful sons we can raise..but it wouldn't be the same." She looked down at August and flashed a sad smile.

Nick stood up from his chair and walked towards her with Aiden in his paws. "Don't worry, just rest. Aleah's strong, just like her mother. She'll pull through."

The grey bunny nodded. "You're right."

Not a minute later, doctor Richmoore came through the door with a clipboard in her paws and some other papers. "How are you two today?" She politely asked, pulling two chairs up next to the bed. As Nick took a seat, he answered.

"We're doing okay." He admitted but somewhat lied.

"Good," she crossed one leg over the other and looked at her clipboard. "Okay, so Miss Hopps how are you feeling?"

Judy shrugged, not really caring about the conversation. "I feel okay."

"Any abdominal pain?" Richmoore asked and Judy shook her head.

"Seems good. Okay now that we got that over with, I want to explain some things about your kits. Mostly about Aleah." She shuffled some papers and sighed.

"The other two, as you know, Are healthy babies. Beautiful too. But Aleah...She doesn't seem to be meeting the standards for being healthy."

Nick frowned, "What did you mean?"

"She has been diagnosed with chronic lung disease. Which is very common for an infant her size. However, tissue in the newborn's lungs are unfortunately damage which could leave to multiple breathing and health problems. Her lungs can trap air or can easily collapse and fill with fluid and causes extra mucus which could be deadly if not taken care of correctly. This disease is often known as bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Or BPD." She finished with a devastated expression.

"BPD as in Borderline personality disorder?" Nick asked and she shook her head.

"It's just an abbreviation for bronchopulmonary dysplasia."

Judy bit the inside of her lip and exhaled, "W-what are the results of her health test?" The bunny managed to say.

Richmoore flipped through some more pages and he ears immediately shot back. "Her blood pressure, weight, and everything else is normal. But..due to her skin being thin, we recommend that Nick shouldn't touch her. Only because he's a predator and has claws that even the lightest touch could tear her skin."

"Are you saying I can never touch my daughter?!" Nick yelled, glaring at the vixen.

"I didn't say never. Just until she grows a thicker coat of fur."

"How long will that be?" Judy pipped in.

"Possibly a year or two. It depends."

Judy glanced at Nick and almost felt heart broken at his upset expression. "Are there medicines you can prescribe her?"

Richmoore picked up a sheet of paper with a list and suggestions on it. "There..Are no medicines we can give infants for this disease. Especially newborns. However, we can reduce the amount of fluids in her lungs." She handed Judy and Nick a copy of a paper.

"What are these?" Nick ask, shifting the baby in his paws and pointing to the images and words on the paper.

Richmoore somewhat smiled, "The mainstay for treating BPD has been surfactant replacement with oxygen supplementation, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and mechanical ventilation. "

"What do you mean by mechanical ventilation?" Once again, Nick asked.

"A breathing machine that can help and monitor or even control her breathing." Richmoore linked her paws on her knee and sighed.

"So," she handed Judy and Nick a stack of papers and a pen. "Fill these out and you'll be free to leave today and take your adorable kits with you." She stood up smiling.

Nick stood up also, "Including Aleah?"

"Yup. But remember what I told you." They shook paws and Richmoore soon left.

Nick turned to Judy and handed her Aiden so she could breast feed him.

"We'll get through this." He whispered to her, looking at his family.
