Mamoru - fourteen
Kyoko's PoV
When I opened my eyes, it was pitch dark. I chuckled at myself when I remember what happened, I really am unlucky, like a black cat.
The first time they did a surprise attack was when I was finally making some connections with my father, and this time, when Jayden and I finally confessed.
I was so distracted in our kiss I wasn't aware of my surroundings at all until the glass windows of the classroom shattered, startling both of us. The three of them must've hid somewhere in the campus while the rest got arrested. Which means they were the last three remaining members of the AIDs.
It was a lot harder to fend off three fully grown men with bare hands. They moved fast and knocked me out, I don't know what happened afterwards.
I seem to be alone in a small, dark room with my arms and ankles bind tightly. There was duct tape over my mouth, but I got it off eventually and used the wall to rub the blindfold off.
Is Jayden alright? The first thought popped into my mind, I don't know what happened to him. They probably abducted him too since he was with me.
"Tch." I clicked my tongue in annoyance, there is no way I'm letting myself be of nuisance any further to anyone else. They must be using me to threaten mom and dad, and that is not happening!
I calmed myself down and analyzed my situation while slowly twisting my wrists against each other to start loosening the rope. I stretched out my arms and hands as much as possible while ignoring the pain the rough ropes brought.
My eyes adjusted to the darkness eventually and I can make out a door across from where I sat. The walls are bare concrete, but not very soundproof. I can tell a heated discussion is going on outside, I just can't quite catch exact words yet.
I leaned back against the wall as support, then kicked my legs that are tied together and shuffled up, I hop over to the door while still trying to get my arms free.
"...use newspaper clippings...our handwriting...." The first person was careful enough to tone down their voice, it sounded like a woman's voice.
"You've read too many detective novels! We got a hostage on our hands, it doesn't matter if they know who we are!" The other one, however, was loud.
"Anyway, let's hurry and send that threat note." the third voice says, "Let's hope we can get this entire thing over with before those rotten kids wake up and make a mess."
He said 'kids', which means I'm not the only one held hostage. By Jayden's physique, I don't think he can wake up any time soon.
Finally! I thought and I sighed lightly in relief when I finally got the ropes loose, I shook them off of my arms, then proceed to untie the ones around my ankles.
Just then, I heard a series of loud bangs followed by the strident sound of something crashing onto the concrete ground. I quickly press my ear against my door to hopefully hear something. Did dad come already?
"You...!" One of the men says. The sound of several chairs scraping against the ground was heard, meaning that they must've all stood up.
"How did you kick down that door?!" The woman's voice yelled.
"Heh, my second favourite subject is physics, photography being my first."
That's... Jayden?!
Jayden's PoV
I caught Kyoko as soon as she was knocked out cold by a blow to the head. I felt anger rush up in me but there wasn't much I could do while holding a girl and having a three-on-one. They pushed some sort of cloth to my nose.
And when I opened my eyes again, I'm in this room. I have my wrists bind in front of me and my ankles as well.
Well, they made a big mistake by tying my arms in front of me, not behind my back.
I licked the duct tape over my mouth until I finally got it off, then bit loose the ropes binding my wrists. After that, untying my ankles weren't difficult to do.
First, I checked the hinges of the door. If the door opens towards me, it'll be next to impossible to kick it down, but luckily, this door swings outwards.
I exhaled a deep breath. I then drove the heel of my standing foot into the ground stably, then focused the kick on the side where the lock is mounted, where it is typically the weakest part of the door.
I quickly landed several blows before the outside could react, and quickly enough, I got the door down.
Two men and one woman sat around a table in the middle, a sheet of paper on it, looking like a threat note. I see what they've been planning.
One man picked up a nearby baseball bat, "It was too much trouble to leave you alive after all...."
Oh crap. I kinda forgot to think about what I'll do after I break out.
Just as my mind spun crazily for a solution and he slowly inches closer, a loud yell coming from the opposite side of the space rang out: "Jayden you fucking idiot!!!"
"The girl's up already?" all three of them glances to the other door.
I reacted fast, grabbed the bat and swung it with all my might. Kyoko purposely shouted out loud to distract them, giving me the one second I needed.
When I opened my eyes, the man laid stiffly in front of me with a blood bashed head.
The other two accomplices gawked at me in shock, probably not expecting a student my age to actually have the nerve to kill someone.
Technically, it wasn't intended.
Kyoko's door jiggled, then the knob fell off--she probably kicked the lock off--and the door flew open.
"We're from a prestigious detective academy, did you really think we'd be putty in your hands?" She asks, a murderous glint in her eyes as she cracks her knuckles.
"G-Get her! She's only a teenager!" The woman yelled to the other man, who quickly picked up a chair and chucked it towards her, "Go to hell!!!"
"Kyoko!" I can't help but call out.
Her expression didn't even change as she precisely caught one of the chair's legs and spun around, a smart move on her behalf since she wouldn't have able to stop the chair head-on.
As you can tell, she's had actual combat training, unlike me, who can just recklessly swing a random bat.
"Now that I don't need to worry about damage to public properties and there are just two of you, you'd better pray your skulls are hard enough."
I lowered the bat when I realize I'm not needed.
"Um, Kyoko, you don't need to be so vio--oh, okay."
*smash*
"Are you sure you want to flip that tabl--I-I see, you do, very well...."
*Bam!*
"Alright, I'm pretty sure they're dead now! You still need to leave evi--"
"Just shut up." She muttered, "I know when a person's dead, don't worry they're not. Yet."
I stare at the two unconscious bodies on the ground.
"The guy you bashed isn't dead either, by the way."
"Oh, that's a relief." I put a hand up to my chest, I thought I'd committed a murder.
We both turn our heads to the front garage door being busted open.
"Police! Put your hands up...in...the..." Kyoko's father slowly dropped his gun and took in the surroundings.
Well this is awkward.
"...air?" He finished in a confused tone, "What the heck? Are you two the abductee or abductor?"

We rode the police car back to the station to assist with their investigation. Of course we received several weird, scared, worried and concerned glances from officers. Because... let's just say there was a lot of blood on the crime scene and just a few bruises on us.
"I've never even been in a fight my whole life... this has scarred me for liiiiiiiife...." He mumbled to himself while sliding down on his chair while we waited.
I rolled my eyes but can't help a small smile creeping up. Sometimes his quick bounce-back and somewhat silly personality is just what I need.
He suddenly sat up right and draped an arm over my shoulder, bringing my head to his shoulder, just like he did in the classroom a couple of hours ago.
"You must be fed up and tired with their actions long ago. Take a nap, I'll wake you when they call us." He says, pressing his lips against my hair, which I'm sure is like a popcorn-gone-wrong again.
He made me lean back in the chair, "Hmm, fine."
"Sleep tight."
Jayden's PoV
She was out like a light in just a few minutes, she must've been mentally exhausted for a while now.
And I can't believe I've ignored it for a week just because I had stupid doubts in my mind.
Our personal belongings were returned to us when the crime scene was searched. My phone ticked in signal of an email.
Feeling quizzical, I tap open my email. It was from my school back in America.
C-Crap.
My eyes scan the email quickly as my eyebrows furrow more and more the further I go down the email.
"Yo." My head snap up and I automatically lock my phone at Mamoru Kishi's voice.
I put a finger to my lips then pointed at the fast-asleep Kyoko. He nodded, then lowered his voice.
He eyed me up and down, then at my arm that's around her. I was starting to get kinda worried that he might disapprove from all his staring until he chuckled lightly while blowing out some smoke from his cigarette.
"Take care of her, will ya?"
I blinked once before returning the same smile, "Of course I will."
At least for as long as I can.

"How long are you planning to sleep~?"
I shuffle a little in the bed sheets and frowned.
"Wakie wakie, Kyoko-chan~"
I lift an arm up over my forehead and slowly open my eyes, "What do you want...?"
I focus my gaze only to see the idiot's face right in front of mine.
"Good morning, sleeping beauty." He greeted with a cheeky grin, as if he's not hovering above me on top of my bed sheets.
I stare at him with a deadpan face, "Get off before I kick you."
However, he only closed the space between us by getting on his elbows. He stole a quick kiss before flipping off the bed just in time to avoid my super kick.
"You've gained faster reflexes." I remarked before sitting up from the bed, then I remembered the previous events, "oh, I missed the investigation, didn't I?"
"Yeah, but don't worry, I filled in your part as best as I remembered." He says while he swiftly made himself comfortable on a chair beside the bed, "And the culprits are all arrested, so you need not to worry about the AIDs ever again."
He showed his cheeky grin that I fell in love with.
I was debating on whether to reach for his hand or not when I realize he's fidgeting and twisting his fingers.
"Is something wrong?" I ask and stare dead into his eyes.
"Perceptive as always, huh...." He murmurs, then takes a breath, "I need to tell you som--"
A series of knocks were heard on the door and it was opened before I could say anything, mom peeked in, a look of relief washing over her features as soon as we make eye contact.
Jayden scooted back in his chair to make some room for my mom beside my bed. She put a hand on my cheek then moved it to my arm, making sure I'm not injured anywhere.
I laughed a little and she returned it, "I'm as good as new, mom, no worries."
After a couple of minutes speaking with her, I completely forgot that Jayden wanted to tell me something.
