Yoshiro's PoV

I remember the conversation Jayden and I were having earlier this afternoon.

"You have a different look in your eyes when you talk about that girl. If Taku's can be described as 'crush', yours can probably be..."

I didn't finish my sentence then. But I knew what I was thinking.

Unrequited love.

Hey, you can't blame a guy's instinct.

There's a safe room behind the school building underground, us students are supposed to stay here while the staff of the school fend off the enemies. I know they're well-trained and all so I'm not worried.

Though I sure am more carefree than I should be at the moment.

"I can't find them anywhere." Taku comes back after he made a round through the room, "no one has seen them, either."

Jayden and Kyoko are nowhere to be found.

"He was in the dorm when I last saw him." My eyes widen in realization. He can't be trapped in the building, can he...?

Taku looked over at the exit. Two teachers posted there. There's no way we can get out. And we've been taught not to call them since if they're hiding from the enemy, a sudden ringtone giving away their positions will not be pretty.

"Dammit! No one's seen Kyoko!" I was startled when Takumori shouted. He has on the most discontented expression I've ever seen. I let out a breath. Lover boys....

"Calm down, if anyone can take care of herself, it's Kyo." I patted him on the shoulder.

Well, at least I hope she's alright.

Jayden's PoV

It seems that everyone's evacuated since I don't see any people rushing out of the building. I just need to know where they are.

Didn't the director tell me about some safe place when I first got in?

Damn, I really need to listen better.

Several police cars are parked at the east side of the school, where I assume the criminals are as well.

I set my sight on the Academy front door. I gasped when I saw a small child crawl out a gap between three fallen poles inside.

I looked both ways to make sure it's safe before running up to him. What's a child doing in a college?!

"You alright? You're safe now." I did a quick scan to make sure he wasn't bleeding, "Did you come out here all by yourself?"

"N-No... Onee-chan is in there.... She saved me."

What should I do....

"Jayden, is that you?" a familiar voice came from behind the blockage, "get that kid out of here right now!"

"Kyoko?! Are you trapped?" I put one hand on the pole, as if I could hear her better that way.

"Um. Technically speaking, yes. Just get that kid outta here. The teachers will come in no time."

Just then, two more gun shots were heard, it sounded closer than before. I'm surprised this child hasn't bursted out crying yet.

"Look, when we got to the main hall by the secret staircase the entrance was already blocked so I let him crawl out since he's small enough. Go find the others!" Her voice became more panicked as I can tell she's constantly looking behind her now.

"Where are they...?" I ask, feeling extremely clueless and unhelpful.

"You don't know!?" She shouted, then said in a lower volume, "I can't say now, if they have some sort of listening device attached, I'd put the entire student body in danger.

"Whatever, just go like a few streets away, that should be enough."

A harsh decision was suddenly put upon me. Since there are no teachers around the building, searching for people, they might assume that everyone's safely evacuated; and the terrorists seem to be getting closer, I highly doubt they'd make it in time to move these heavy posts and free Kyoko. On the other hand, if I try to get Kyoko out, I can't be responsible for the child's safety. And if anyone comes, I'll put two people in danger.

Time seems to freeze around me as my brain functions quickly.

"Hey listen." I move fast and kneeled to the kid's height, "go straight down the street and you'll see a pretty blue shop. Go in there to a lady with orange short hair, and tell her Jayden needs you there for a few minutes, okay?"

He nodded furiously, desperately blinking back his tears. What a brave child. As soon as I nod back to him, he ran off.

"You--!"

"I'm not gonna give you time to insult me." I said back before Kyoko could cuss her head off. "I'll have you know, I was captain of several sports teams."

It was only one team, but I need to keep her listening to me.

She's silent while I try to figure out which one to move first. I can't see her face, I don't know what she's thinking about at all.

"Kyoko?" I called out again, just to make sure she's still there.

"...Yeah, I'm here. You airhead."

Let's see...I just need a small space for her to be able to push out of. It's best to make that small hole the kid climbed out of bigger.

A light growl came out of my throat while I lifted one of the broken statue poles with all my might and tossed it aside, "I hope you don't mind crawling."

"Heh, this is nothing. I've gotten more intense training." Her head poked out of the bigger hole on the bottom by lifting away one.

I broke off some pieces around and made the space bigger, "watch your head."

"Here." I took both her hands once her arms were out and pulled the rest of her across.

Her hair was a mess and dust stained her shirt.

"I don't think they'll let us in, if the adversaries see us, we'll endanger all the students." She says as she brushed her hair out of her face.

"Where'd you tell that kid to go?"

"It's a bar. I just met the owner, but she's nice." I say, I'm pretty sure Rin will at least let the boy stay for a bit; even though I don't trust her completely. She always has this secretive aura.

"I think I heard voices this way." That single whisper of a random sent a shiver down my spine. Before I knew it, Kyoko grabbed my arm and pulled me down behind the main doors.

"There's no way any students are still here, let's run!" another voice said.

"Ugh, in the end we didn't find the daughter after all."

What?

What. They had a specific goal when they came here?!

"I swear! Kishi has an illegitimate child! It's a daughter too! I'm pretty sure she's around sixteen, seventeen ish too!"

"Yeah, yeah. I believe you. Let's just report back."

I didn't dare make a single sound until the footsteps faded away completely. She probably has sharper sense than I, so I waited until Kyoko stood up then followed suit.

Kyoko's surname is Kishi, which means those guys must've been talking about her father.

What is this girl's background...?

"I think it's over." She says. I was still debating on whether to ask her about it or not when a man's voice shouted her name in a worried manner before he dashed in.

I felt my eyes are gonna pop out from how wide I opened them. Kyoko looks like a female replica of this guy...!

Kyoko's PoV

I couldn't get the image out of my head. Through the few spaces of the broken statue pieces, I could see his eyes darting around, looking for the key piece. I could literally see the veins on his arms bulge when he lifted it.

I looked away after that. I honestly didn't even expect him to stay.

I pulled him down beside me when I heard voices. Urgent footsteps past by as they conversed.

Dad... he made some pretty serious enemies, didn't he....

Could this possibly be the AIDs?

The organization who gathers young people and brainwash them into criminals?

I should've known they'd do something so absurd just to get to me.

I've heard mom's story numerous times. They made quite the enemy out of the AID when they escaped, didn't they?

(I don't really remember, so just go with it)

They found out where I am.

What the heck are they gonna do?

"I think it's over." I say as I stood up, Jayden followed suit.

He didn't ask any questions though I'm sure he's fully aware of my surname and at least half of the position my dad's in.

"Kyoko!" a man's voice calls from outside. Right after, dad ran inside.

Jayden's eyes almost popped out. He glanced at me, then back at him, then at me again.

"I'm so glad you're alright! Any of you hurt?" He proceeds to scan us both up and down to make sure there are no scratches or wounds. He still had a tight grip on the gun on his right hand, I think that's alarming Jayden.

I don't think he's even seen a gun in the flesh up till today.

"Detective Kishi, thank you for your help today. We couldn't have captured those outlaws so quickly without you." Director Sakai came in and shook hands with him briefly.

I think Jayden's mind blown.

"I'm just glad you're all safe and sound." The director bowed to us, "Students will be transferred to the other building the day after tomorrow. The address will be sent to guardians tomorrow morning."

"...Don't the students need more time to recover from something as big as this?" Before I could stop him, Jayden posted this question.

Dad chuckled, the director laughed.

"They'll face much more dangerous situations in the future if they're keeping in this field. Think of this as a test to see if you're mentally prepared to be a detective on the field." Dad replied with the director agreeing.

We followed them out of the building. Then, I spoke to Jayden, "Aren't you forgetting something?"

He looked puzzled until he realized where he sent the kid off to: "I'll be right back!"

I glanced at my watch, it was 6:00pm. Man, all that went on for longer than I thought.

Probably because I didn't actually see the attackers, but I'm feeling rather calm. When it's all over, it feels like it never happened.

"Kyoko!!!" I almost didn't recognize Takumori's voice at its loudest. His features twisted in anxiety like never before as he sprinted—and I mean in full speed—towards me, leaving Yoshiro behind him eating dust.

I took almost five steps back as he crashed into me. His hands trembled and let go of me as sudden as he had embraced me. "Where were you?" His voice back to the calm state, his breath ragged a bit from all the running.

"Damn you were fast!" Yoshiro panted as he barely caught on. He's supposed to be the most athletic out of us.

"Nice to see you guys are without a scratch." I do my best to grin even though I feel a burning bruise at the side of my stomach and my arms were sore, "I was kinda trapped in the building. Jayden helped me out."

"Is this who you were texting in the library?" Dad asks, amusement in his voice.

"No. This is my neighbor." I patted Takumori's arm, "Takumori. And that one over there is Yoshiro, his roommate."

"You were in the building? T-Then...did you see my little cousin?" suddenly, a male student runs up to me, worry filling his eyes, "I left him in my dorm...."

"Family members aren't allowed on campus, aren't they?" I say first. He better feel very irresponsible right now.

"I know... It'll never happen again, I swear!"

"Long story short. I carried him out, and he's at a safe place right now. Jayden went to get him."

I turned around and walked away before he could respond.

Speak of the devil, it's been ten minutes, where is that ginger?

"I'll be back." I say to my dad before walking off. I remember Jayden telling the kid about the brief directions. Keep walking straight to a blue-themed bar.

It was only about a third of a block down the street so I found it quickly.

However, I was greeted by the sight of Jayden holding a girl's hand while speaking to her.

He looked kind of heart broken.

She had long black hair and a cold expression.
