2 | Boys Are Overrated...

I SET DOWN my coffee mug, sliding into the chair in front of me. Saoirse and Zendaya had arrived five minutes prior, due to some circumstances making me late, and had already gotten their drinks.
"So explain this again," Daya said, dropping her spoon into her latte, "some random guy runs up to you on the sidewalk and just..."
"Kisses me," I answer for her, ripping open a sugar packet, "exactly."
The girl leaned back into her chair, disbelief written all over her face. Saorise seemed more intrigued, and she took a sip of her coffee before setting it down to question me.
"Did you know him?" She asked, "was he like a past one night stand?"
"Sersh!" I exclaimed, "I literally broke up with Leo a week ago!"
"And?"
"I'm not desperate," I frowned, "and no, I didn't know him."
"But was he cute?" Zendaya smirked, raising an eyebrow.
I squinted my eyes, trying to remember the face. It wasn't hard to do, because his features were strikingly unforgettable. Dark brown curls, olive eyes with a hint of gold, and tiny freckles running along his nose. I wasn't sure how I remembered all of that, or even noticed it, but I couldn't deny he was attractive.
"Yeah," I shrugged, "a little bit."
The two girls giggled, as if they were reliving the moment through me.
"Was the kiss good?" Saorsie jumped in, leaning into the table in interest.
Other than the fact that it was forced, the kiss wasn't bad. It was just different. I had only kissed one person for three years, and that was the first time my lips had ever touched a stranger's since then.
"Surprisingly..." I mumbled, before snapping my head up, "but that's not the point."
"Ohhh," Sersh nodded, "because it was, ya' know-"
"Yes," I frowned, "it was harassment."
"I vote for beating him up!" Daya grinned, lifting her mug.
"It's fine," I laughed, shaking my head, "this is New York, I'm not going to run into him again."
"Let's drink to that!"
The three of us clinked our glasses together, before chugging down a gulp of our coffees. I licked my lips, the faint taste of my cherry chapstick mixing with the caffeine. I still wondered how he could pick that up from just one kiss, and I felt the blood rush to my cheeks. Thinking about it made me blush, and I knew I shouldn't be thinking about the situation in that light.
"Going back to the apartment," Saorise added, thankfully changing the subject, "tell us about your Craigslist offers."
"What about them?"
"When are you meeting them next?"
I shrugged, "I've only gotten one person to send me a time."
"Who?" Zendaya puckered her lips together, staring into her cup, "we can go with you just in case."
"I'm not going to die, guys."
"Fine," Sersh nodded, "what time is it?"
"Tomorrow at Twelve."
"If you die I'm framing Leo," Daya huffed, tapping the side of her glass, "he deserves to be behind bars."
"I'm not going to die!" I chuckled, "and speaking of Leo, he called me today."
It was like the two of them were smacked in the back of the head with a frying pan, because they shot up straight in their seats, shaking their heads in unison.
"Please tell me you didn't pick up," Sersh frowned, tucking her red hair behind her ear.
"Yes, I picked up," I admitted, "but before you say anything else, it was an accident."
"How the heck is that an accident?"
"I thought he was you!"
"Well, what did he want?" Daya cut in. I could tell she was just as disappointed in me as Saoirse was.
I sighed, "just to talk."
"And you said....?"
"I said no."
"Good," they both said in unison, nodding their heads.
We were silent for a moment, all the pent up steam over Leo draining out of our bodies. The two of them were there for everything: the first time he asked me out, the official title announcement, the anniversary parties he threw. Finding out what happened hurt them a lot too, especially after seeing me stuck there for three years.
I was about to open my mouth to speak, when my phone started to buzz on the table. Flipping it over, my eyes quickly scanned the message, my heart sinking.
3 NEW MESSAGES FROM ROSCO!
Come into the office
Emergency meeting
Bring bagels
Rolling my eyes into the back of my head, I let out a tired groan. I worked for Adriana Rosco at Rosco Talent Agency, and I hated every second spent with her. I loved the job, don't get me wrong, but I hated whenever she'd pull stunts like this.
"Who was that?" Zendaya asked, making a side-glance at Saoirse. They probably thought it was Leo.
"My boss," I frowned, "she want's me to come into the office."
"Isn't it Sunday?"
"Yeah, another week of overtime for me!" The sarcasm was dripping off my tongue heavily, but I didn't care, "she's called me in five extra times and it's only been two weeks."
"That sucks."
"She sucks," I muttered under my breath, standing up from my chair, "I've got to go."
"You can't stay a little longer?" Saoirse pleaded, "you just got here!"
"Emergency meeting, I'm sorry."
"Fine."
Waving them a quick goodbye, I grabbed my purse and hurried out of the cafe. The New York weather was already starting to chill, and I debated whether or not I should run back to my apartment to grab a jacket. Emergency meeting, right. I didn't have time. Glancing down at the messages, I let out an irritated puff of air, and continued down the sidewalk.
Now I had to find some bagels.
