nine: promise
JJG
Jeongguk puffed out his cheeks with his lips in a pout. Hoseok squeezed the boy's cheeks together, letting all the air come out in an obnoxious sound.
"Ooh, what's our cutie pie thinking about now?" Hoseok asked as if he was talking to an child, shaking Jeongguk's head and squishing him a little more.
Jeongguk swatted the other's hands away. "Nothing," he answered simply.
"Then why are you so spaced out? C'mon, Guks, school's over! It's time to enjoy it before we go off to..." Yerim started, but her face got bitter as she continued. "School once again," she finished, groaning and sipping her milkshake aggressively.
"You got into Yonsei, right?" Kumi asked.
Yerim nodded, then looked at them with a big frown. "None of you are staying in Seoul, this is so depressing."
Yerim was probably the second smartest in their group, Taehyung being the first of course, and she studies and works hard. Unlike the rest who had to apply to a bunch of school and pray one of them would accept them.
"I know," Hoseok muttered.
"Oh shush! You're going to the same college as Jeongguk," Kumi said, feeling a little annoyed. She was feeling the most sad about this as she was going to a university back in Japan.
Hoseok raised his hands defensively, pretending to back off. He turned his attention back to Jeongguk, who still seemed to be elsewhere. He snapped his fingers as if he realized something genius, getting the boy back to planet Earth at the same time.
"You're upset that you can't continue going to school with Taehyung, aren't you?" Hoseok asked, pointing a finger at Jeongguk.
"No, nothing like that," Jeongguk answered.
"Then what?" Hoseok asked still very curious.
Jeongguk gave him a sad look before sinking into the seat in their booth, sipping his milk tea and chewing on the tapioca pearls slowly. Kumi shook her head in disappointment as Yerim threw him a glare for prying so much.
"Hey guys, sorry I'm late," a new voice entered and Jeongguk's face instantly lit up.
"It's alright," Jeongguk chirped, shoving Kumi to the side to make space, then patting that spot for him. Taehyung took the seat. Jeongguk leaned over and planted a kiss on his boyfriend's cheek.
Taehyung cheeks tinted red as he wasn't used to all of this in front of others yet, but he looked at Jeongguk to return the smile.
"Seriously? He was upset 'cause Taehyung wasn't here yet?" Hoseok asked pretending to be offended. He made eye contact with Taehyung. "Boy's really whipped for you."
"Oh shut up," Jeongguk said, sticking out his tongue. "Anyways, what do you want to drink, babe?"
Taehyung chuckled at their little banter. "Mm, matcha latte?"
Jeongguk nodded then looked over at Hoseok. Hoseok looked back. They blinked at each other until Hoseok shut his eyes, put his hands down on the table and got up.
"Oh, I'll just go order-" Taehyung started, but Hoseok shook his head and went to line up.
"Don't worry, he lost a bet earlier," Yerim explained. "Anyways, Kumi and I invited a couple people. That's alright with you right?"
"Oh yeah, the more the merrier they say," Taehyung replied.
They were all going to an amusement park to spend the little time they'll probably have to actually be together in the best ways possible.
Hoseok came back with the drink soon enough and they just sat and talked for a while. Mostly about future plans and what not.
"Oh babe, you got some foam here," Jeongguk said. He grabbed a napkin and wiped the corner of Taehyung's lip.
"Thank you," Taehyung said, taking advantage of their proximity and tilting his head ever so lightly and giving the tip of the boy's nose a peck.
Yerim sighed lightly. "I wish I had a boyfriend."
"Let's date-" Before Hoseok could even put a full stop to his sentence, Yerim shook her and head and cut him off. "No."
Hoseok shrugged. "Your loss," he said adding a wink, making the other's laugh and Yerim roll her eyes.
"Oh, Momo! Over here!" Kumi yelled out and getting everyone's attention to the door. The girl quickly walked over to their booth as Kumi made her way out. The girls hugged with big smiles.
"Guys, my cousin Hirai Momo. And Momo, this is Jeon Jeongguk, Kim Taehyung, Kim Yerim, and Jung Hoseok," Kumi introduced, pointing to everyone as she went along.
Momo smiled and nodded. "Nice to meet all of you."
"Sit down, you two," Yerim said, her tone full of excitement to see a new face.
Kumi looked at Hoseok, who looked awestruck as his eyes were on Momo. Kumi hissed quietly, getting Hoseok's attention. She tilted her head, telling him to go sit on the other side. Hoseok shook his head then Kumi threw him a sharp look. With a pout, Hoseok got up as Jeongguk and Taehyung scooted over for him to sit down.
Kumi glanced back at Momo with a smile, looking the complete opposite of what she looked like before and sat down. "She's visiting to see what Korea's like. She's fluent in Korean too," she explained.
"Well, we hope you enjoy your stay," Jeongguk said, throwing one of his famous smiles.
"Oh, what, uhm- what drink do you like? It's my treat," Hoseok asked, saying the last bit proudly as if he was just a really nice friend and didn't lose a bet.
"Really? Thank you. Then a peach shake, please."
Hoseok nodded and ran over to order enthusiastically. The group shook their head at the boy act as if he's never seen someone of the opposite sex before.
After everyone got to know Momo a little better and finished their drinks, they finally made way to the park. It was all fun and laughs until they met up with who Yerim had invited.
"Sooyung!" Yerim yelled, running over to the girl. Everyone followed and caught up to her. Sooyung's smile dropped as soon as she saw the boy who's reaction was the same as her's in the group.
"Oh right, this is Momo, Kumi's cousin. Momo, this is Sooyung."
Sooyung gave a friendly smile to Momo before her gaze, like everyone's except for Momo's, turned to Hoseok. The two didn't break eye contact.
Jeongguk noticing the tension decided to break it. "Let's go inside guys! Gosh, Sooyung-ah, we haven't hung out in forever," Jeongguk said as he ran over to the girl and linked his arms with her so that she would walk inside with him. The rest followed with an awkward smile.
Hoseok grabbed Yerim's wrist, stopping her from going inside. Yerim turned around. "What?"
"You invited her?" Hoseok asked, not sounding so cheerful. Well, who would when they see an ex-girlfriend with whom things didn't end off so well.
Yerim scoffed. "She's one of my best friends, Hoseok! Our best friend. I miss us hanging out all together. You two need to deal with your shit like you're not five year olds." She took her hand back and released from the other's grip. "Let's just have fun, okay?"
Hoseok looked at the ground. He sighed and nodded weakly. Yerim grinned, threw her arm over the boy's shoulder and guided him inside.
Jeongguk sighed as he watched the two come in. He looked at Taehyung. "You think if we broke up we'd not want to see each other at all like them?" he asked quietly so that the others couldn't hear.
Taehyung knotted his brows. "That won't happen."
"But how do you know? Sooyung and Hoseok used to be so close. I mean, I just like you so much that if things did end between us, I don't know if I could even handle being in the same r-"
"I meant breaking up. That won't happen."
Jeongguk bit his lip, stopping the smile from peaking through. "Oh really?"
"Really," Taehyung replied, looking very serious.
"Promise?" Jeongguk brought up his hand and stretched out his pinky finger.
Taehyung locked the boy's pinky finger with his with no hesitation, and sealed it with their thumbs. Taehyung got a little closer as they smiled dumbly at each other and whispered, "I promise."
"Hey lovebirds, come get your wristbands!" Kumi called out. The two pulled away from each other. Taehyung stretched out his hand and Jeongguk gladly entwined his with the other's. They walked over to the rest of the group and got their wristband on, the couple helping each other as they both didn't want to let go of the other's hand.
And so, the fun began. It was weird and awkward for a while with Hoseok flirting more with Momo than he would've to make Sooyung jealous, although she seemed unbothered. Eventually, the two made a silent agreement that if they just didn't acknowledge each other's presences, everything would be fine.
It was all fine, but only until they got to the haunted house. They began to argue, and the others were left to watch that awkwardly, not knowing how or when to interfere, if they should at all.
"Everything in there is fake anyways," Sooyung started when Hoseok refused to go in. "What's there to be scared about?"
"A lot okay! There you go again, not considering anyone else's feelings," Hoseok said, crossing him arms.
"I'm the one didn't consider other's feelings? You're the- no, I didn't come here for this." Sooyung pauses to take in a big breath. "Stop being a goddamn baby for two seconds."
Just as she finished talking, the worker there announced for the next group to go in. Sooyung quickly showed her wristband and went in.
Hoseok scoffed, but felt an arm link with his. He looked to the owner. "Let's go in," Momo said with a smile. Hoseok's feature softened up as he returned the smile. They both showed their band and went in. Kumi and Yerim followed next, both sighing and ranting about the broken up couple. Taehyung and Jeongguk just shrugged to each other and also went in.
The haunted house was simple and basic. This one had different paths for the visitors to choose from, some lead to longer scares and other got them to the exit quicker.
Taehyung and Jeongguk gripped onto each other tightly as they walked through the quickest and least scary path, looking all around. They weren't necessarily scared of the antics, it was all the jump scares that got to them.
"Don't worry, Taehyungie! I'll protect you!" Jeongguk yelled, just as a women dressed as a zombie tried to grab his hand causing him to scream and shut his eyes tightly, clutching onto more of Taehyung.
Taehyung chuckled, also feeling a scared from that. "I know you will."
They somehow managed to make it to the end without punching any of the actors or crying in a corner. They met Yerim and Kumi already outside waiting as they also took the short route, meaning the other three took the long one.
"Are you alright?" Jeongguk asked his boyfriend, leaning closer just because he wanted to.
"Yes, baby," Taehyung whispered back a reply. "I had you to protect me, after all! I've got nothing to be scared of."
Jeongguk giggled, hitting Taehyung's shoulder lightly. "Damn right."
Yerim bursted out into laughter, catching everyone's attention. She held onto her stomach and pointed at whatever she found so funny.
The scene certainly was nothing less than hilarious. Out came Hoseok, mouth hanging open, skin pale as if he had seen an actual ghost, and Momo and Sooyung gripping onto each one of his arm tightly as their eyes were shut.
"Oh my god," Jeongguk muttered, a grin breaking out.
Sooyung slowly opened her eyes, and as soon as he realized who she'd been holding onto, she jumped away. Hoseok snapped back to reality and looked away from the girl. Both's cheeks were tinted red. Momo lastly opened her eyes, acknowledging her surroundings and shaking her head.
"Never doing that again," she said. She looked at the hand she was around and up at Hoseok. "Oh, sorry," she said, unraveling her arms from his.
"N-no, it's okay," Hoseok stuttered out. He missed the pair of arms around him.
"How was it, guys?" Kumi asked as everyone approached them.
"We accidentally took the scariest route," Momo said, then laughed. "We were just screaming the entire time."
They shared their most frightening parts as they walked away. Hoseok and Sooyung kept quiet though.
"I'm starving!" Jeongguk declared.
"Let's get dinner," Taehyung suggested, to which everyone agreed.
They pulled out the map and looked around for restaurants in the park, settling on a hamburger place. After buying their preferred food and drinks, they found a table to fit them all and took a seat.
"Here, try mine," Jeongguk said, bringing his burger to Taehyung's mouth. Taehyung took a bite. "Mm, that's really good. Here," he said, copying the other's action. Jeongguk took a bite of his. "That delicious!"
"You literally bought the same thing," Yerim said as she watched the couple. Jeongguk sticked out his tongue at the girl and continued feeding Taehyung a fry.
"Are you okay?" Momo asked, with a short laugh.
Sooyung nodded her head, also laughing. "Yeah, this burger is just so big." She set the burger down and chewed on the big bite when a couple tissues were thrown her way and landed on the table. She looked up at the direction it came from.
Hoseok scoffed. "You're still such a messy eater."
Sooyung glared at him but picked up the paper napkin and wiped her mouth. "Thanks," she said, angrily.
Once they finished eating, they all made way to find the perfect spot to watch the fireworks. Just as they began crossing a bridge, another fight broke out.
"Oh my god, would you please shut your mouth for just two minutes!" Sooyung yelled.
"I was just saying you should walk in a straight line! Are you drunk or something?? You're going to bump into someone or fall down. Then don't come crying to me when you get hurt!" Hoseok complained, stopping in his tracks as everyone else also did so.
"I'll walk how I want to! Who are you to care!? Why would I even come crying to you of all people!"
"Um, do you want me to remind you what happened in the haunted house?"
Sooyung closed her eyes and breathed in, trying to call herself down. "You are just so-" she growled, "so aggravating!" She turned on her heel and began stomping away in a random direction.
Hoseok threw his arms in the air. "I don't even know why I bothered to come!" he yelled, making sure she'd hear before walking away in the opposite direction.
The four watched as the scene unfolded. Everyone stood there shocked, not knowing what to do now.
"I'll go... I'll go find Sooyung and calm her down," Yerim said quickly then ran the direction the girl went in.
Kumi sighed. "I guess I'll go see Hoseok." She went to where Hoseok was walking, Momo following behind.
That left Taehyung and Jeongguk alone. The couple looked at each other and shared a short laugh. Taehyung nodded towards the edge of the bridge. The two walked over and leaned against the railing.
A shiver ran down Jeongguk's back, making him shake a little more than usual. He felt Taehyung's shoulder touch his, a smile making way to both of their lips. Jeongguk scanned throughout the park and his eyes met with a very familiar pair. A group of girls that if he remembers correctly made him almost give up on Taehyung saying he felt uncomfortable with him.
"Whatcha' looking at," Taehyung whispered into Jeongguk's ear, getting up close.
Jeongguk turned his head to look at the other. "Huh?" He noticed their proximity at that point, and decided that he could be petty this once.
Without warning, Jeongguk tipped his head just a little bit so that their lips connected. Taehyung's eyes widened at the sudden contact, but closed his eyes just as Jeongguk turned his entire body and gripped onto his collar to deepen the kiss. Taehyung's hand placed themselves onto Jeongguk's waist and pulled the boy closer. Jeongguk pulled away first and both took in the much needed air that they didn't even break away for.
"What was that?" Taehyung questioned, a pleased smile dancing on his lips.
Jeongguk hands slipped down and wrapped around Taehyung so that he could hug him. "My lips were getting cold."
Taehyung chuckled and laid a kiss on his boyfriend's temple before looking back at the view from the bridge, still holding Jeongguk in his arms. Jeongguk also looked back from the bridge, but instead of the beautiful garden, back at the group of girls who looked quite pissed.
Of course they heard of the two's relationship as gossip spreads like wildfire at their school, but since then they hadn't been able to face Jeongguk. They avoided him as much as they could. Jeongguk finally got the opportunity to rub it off in their face. The girls had walked away after groaning amongst themselves.
"Hey," Taehyung called out softly.
"Yeah?" Jeongguk asked back, resting his head on the boy's shoulder.
"Do you wanna be my boyfriend?"
Jeongguk laughed. "I already am, silly."
"I know, I just find it hard to believe at times though. Just making sure."
Jeongguk lifted his head and looked at Taehyung to find him already staring at the boy. They looked into each other eyes, their surroundings blurring out and just getting lost in their own world, something that happened way too often. Even during their little kiss previously. Usually Taehyung was super shy about doing anything in public, but he couldn't even see anyone other that Jeongguk at that moment.
They would've continued being in that small bubble of theirs if it hadn't been for their friends calling out for them. They got their group back together and found a good place to watch the fireworks from. For that moment where sparks flooded the night sky, everyone forgot about their worries, their anger, thoughts about the future. They just enjoyed the beautiful memory.
Especially Jeongguk and Taehyung, as they had held each other close the entire time. The fireworks up in the sky felt exactly like what was happening with the two's feelings at that moment.

KTH
Earlier...
Taehyung gripped tightly to the set of promise rings he had bought. He would give them Jeongguk today, he knew he'd get the perfect chance. He shoved the box into his pocket and closed it safely with the zipper, then began running to the meeting place as he was already running late.
