four: first kiss

JJG

Recess began and the students were chattering. Jeongguk was inquiring Taehyung about the book he was currently reading when he felt a tap on his shoulder. Turning around, he saw Pilsoo, a junior he had befriended on the first day of orientation for the first years at that time. Since then, Jeongguk has made sure to wave or call him out whenever he saw him. Another reason Jeongguk could never forget him was because of when he had helped the boy figure out he was bisexual. Pilsoo always came to him for help with any dilemma.

"Pilsoo-ah, what brings you here?" Jeongguk yelled, grabbing the younger's hand and swinging it wildly.

"Um, can we talk for a bit?" Pilsoo said, his voice quieter than usual.

"Hmm? Yeah sure!"

"Somewhere a bit more private, maybe?"

Jeongguk squinted his eyes and leaned up closer to boy. He whispered-yelled, "You didn't get a girl pregnant, did you?"

"What? H-Hyung, no! It's something else."

The older nodded slowly. He got up and pinched the bridge of Taehyung's nose. "I'll be back, don't miss me too much!"

Jeongguk followed Pilsoo out of the classroom and to the stairs that would lead to the basement. No one came around there since the basement was prohibited to students so it was empty and silent. Jeongguk waited for the boy to say something, but the other looked quite nervous so the older let him take his time.

Finally, he wiped his sweaty palms on his pants and pulled out a lightly crumpled pink envelope. Straightening the piece, Pilsoo stretched it out towards to older and bowed, not wanting to make eye contact.

"Hyung, I like you!"

Jeongguk was shocked. It was his first confession from a boy and the first confession he's gotten since he's come out. He was flabbergasted, not knowing what to say. Pilsoo raised his head, still holding out the letter.

"You dont have to say a-anything! I wanted to tell you before you graduated. A-And I wrote down everything I wanted to say in here, so p-please accept it! I'd greatly appreciate it if you would at least give me a chance."

"P-Pil, I-I..." Jeongguk remained silent for a moment but took the letter into his hands. The younger finally made eye contact with him. "I'm flattered really, and you're one of the most respectful, and kind, and sweetest boy I know, but I'm sorry, I can't accept this."

Pilsoo sighed. "I know, I know you like someone else, but you've just liked him for so long, that I– I just thought that I can make you forgot about him. I don't know if he makes you happy, but from what I see, he's just leading you on."

Jeongguk gulped. He bit the insides of his cheeks, feeling lightly embarrassed.

"I didn't mean it in a–"

"I'm sorry. I'm going to go now." Jeongguk bowed slightly, all the colours he had in him before drained out as he walked back to class. On his way, he saw Taehyung in the hallway talking to some girl in a setting similar to the one he had just been in. He didn't feel like analyzing what in the world was going on, he was just not in the mood. When Jeongguk was about to walk past them, Taehyung stopped him.

"Your mom called, said it was an emergency," Taehyung said, handing him his phone.

Jeongguk took it, not even sparing a glance at the other. "Thank you," he muttered, before continuing to walk. He called his mom, the big emergency was that she forgot about Mr. Jeon's birthday and had no clue what to get him, consulting her only son for help. After he gave her some suggestion, Jeongguk went to class.

He plopped back onto his desk and shoved the letter into his bag. Laying his head down, he closed his eyes and didn't look at Taehyung (who had returned before he did) for the rest of that break. In the end, Jeongguk decided to brush it off and talk again to Pilsoo but first give him some time to let the rejection sink in.

That was Jeongguk for you. If there ever was a problem running through his mind, he muted out the world and just thought over it calmly until he came to a conclusion or solution by himself.

The class right after break was physical education. What Jeongguk looked foreword to since the beginning of the day, other than seeing Taehyung of course. Once he changed into his P.E. uniform, he skipped down the hallway happily to go to join his class, some already out since recess had begun and other who had gone ahead of him. He always took the longest to change as he always spent time fixing his hair that might've gotten messed up while he slid the top on. Taehyung didn't really like changing in the boy's locker room with all the others, so he always went to the washroom and outside from there.

He was stopped as he neared the exit by a group of girls from a different class who must've somehow gotten hall passes. Jeongguk recognized two out of three of the girls. They both had a reputation for starting gossip about each other, fighting, then making up and gossiping about others.

"Can I help you?" Jeongguk asked, seeing the girls weren't moving from blocking the exit.

"Yes, actually," Jieun started. "We need to talk."

"Oh um, I gotta head to class." Jeongguk tried to see if he could push through the girls, but the unknown one stepped up.

Daehee, read her name tag, said with a snarky tone, "Just a quick chat. It won't take too long."

The boy nodded. "So, what's up."

"Look, we get that you like guys and we're all for that," Leena said.

"But you need to stop going after a guy who's straight," Jieun finished the sentence off.

Without even letting Jeongguk have the chance to react, Daehee threw her hands up. "I mean, are we the only one's who sees how uncomfortable he is? If you did this to a girl it'd be creepy as fuck but since it's a guy it's all okay, right?"

"What we're trying to say is, Taehyung is straight. Going after a guy like him will only end up with yourself getting hurt. You get what I'm saying? We're just looking out for you, Gguks."

Jeongguk stared at the three for another moment.

"When the fuck has Taehyung ever declared his sexuality? And we've been friends since grade one, he would've stayed away from me a while ago if he felt that. Okay, whatever, if I make him uncomfortable, I want to hear it from him, and I'd stop bothering the very next second. I don't want to hear it from fake ass snakes like you. Now please, move. Also, don't call me Gguks."

The three's jaws dropped. Jeongguk rolled his eyes and pushed his way through to the door, the girls too shocked to stop him.

"Fucking bitch! Acting like you're all innocent and shit! It's your fault Amy–mphm–" Jeongguk heard. He was slightly confused on why the last part was muffled, but he didn't care enough to think about it. He was raging, his day just kept getting disrupted.

First Pilsoo, then the girl Taehyung was probably getting a confession from, and now the three girls. His rage then turned to disgust. He felt sick, like he was about to vomit, and his coach noticed immediately when he entered the field, forcing the boy to sit down and sit out for the day. Jeongguk usually would've protested against it, but he really did need some time to just cool off again.

During that time, Jeongguk thought over a few things:

1. He liked Taehyung and has always imagined a future with him in it. He couldn't just give up so easily on him.

2. He can't even fathom the thought of letting another boy enter his heart.

3. Even if he wanted to, his heart was already in the hands of Kim Taehyung.

In conclusion, Jeongguk decided that he should stay away from Taehyung for a while, take a break from liking him. Not to forgot about him, not to get over him, but just to see what he would become if the boy wasn't in his life. He needed to prepare himself for the worst.

So it began, after that class had ended, everyone changed and returned to class. Jeongguk didn't say a single word to the boy or even a glance. He was surprised at himself for how much self-control he had. The words he had heard throughout the day helped in that. Then, as soon as their final class ended, Jeongguk quickly packed up.

"See you in the library?" Taehyung asked.

Jeongguk looked at his phone. "Busy this week. Sorry."

"It's okay, we can continue whenever we have time."

Jeongguk just wanted to stop and give him a hug. Taehyung was just too goddamn kind. He also heard the hint of disappointment. But no! Jeongguk had to stick through with his plan. If he breaks on the first day, it'll just prove his point and make him more depressed.

This continued on for another four days. Jeongguk stopped every sort of interaction with the other, excluding the daily snack and greeting. He even left the classroom during lunch and break so that Taehyung didn't have the chance to say anything. Of course, the sudden change didn't go unnoticed, everyone in the class was a little shocked. A few began gossiping about how Taehyung rejected him, or how Jeongguk stopped liking, there were some that even said Jeongguk got a boyfriend since he seemed unbothered and not like someone who had just given up on the love of his life. Nevertheless, Taehyung definitely noticed, and heard of all the speculations.

That fifth day of Jeongguk great plan was his and Taehyung's turn to clean up the class. Everyone took turns in pairs of two by the order in which they sat. Taehyung swept while Jeongguk cleaned the chalk board while humming a little tune.

"Is that from Beauty and the Beast?" Taehyung asked, eyes still on the ground.

"Mhm," Jeongguk replied simply, continuing to hum. God how he wanted to talk more, sit down with him and tell him all about why he loved that movie so much and how he's thought of Taehyung and him dancing like they did in the ballroom scene but he just couldn't.

"Heard you're in a relationship, congrats."

He stopped humming. "Just false rumours."

Taehyung nodded, although the couldn't see. The silence between them continued. Usually, it would've been filled with chatter from Jeongguk talking about whatever he felt was important that day, such as how rocks have feelings too.

Taehyung sighed loudly and set the broom down, accidentally doing a little too roughly and producing a loud bang, startling the other. Jeongguk stopped wiping the board and turned around, confused.

"Did I do something wrong? Are you mad at me?"

"What?"

"You're avoiding me."

Jeongguk blinked. "Oh."

"I thought— I thought you liked me," Taehyung said quietly.

"W-well, I did, okay? And I know you knew even thought I never told you but I like liked you."

Taehyung's eyes widened. Is he finally getting the long awaited confession?

"But that's in the past! I've decided not to like you anymore. Please understand," Jeongguk said bravely, loud and clear.

Taehyung began approaching the boy, and once he was right in front of him he didn't stop. Jeongguk took a step back for every new step the other took until his back hit the board. Taehyung placed on his hands on the board beside his shoulders, trapping the boy.

"Really? You'll really stop?"

The boy gulped, getting nervous and small at the close proximity. "Y-Yes."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Just like that?"

Jeongguk took a moment to himself. He's never been this close to Taehyung before. He could see all the small details. Eyes scanned over every feature. Then they landed on the boy's mouth in a confident pout. Oh how pretty his lips were. When he realized he was staring at them for way longer than necessary, his eyes darted back so that he could answer.

"Just li—"

Taehyung shut him up. Literally. Without giving the boy time to finish his word, Taehyung leaned in a placed a kiss on Jeongguk's lips. It only last a few seconds, no movement, just a simple and static kiss. Jeonggum nearly kissed back before Taehyung pulled away.  Jeongguk eyes were wide, frozen, shocked. Taehyung steppped back, walked over to the broom, picked it up, and continued sweeping.

Jeongguk remained in that position for about five minutes. When he came back to reality, he brought his index finger to touch his bottom lip, wanting to see if he even had lips because he didn't feel like he did at the very moment. His eyes snapped towards Taehyung, who was throwing out the waste into the bin.

"Did that happen?"

Taehyung looked back. "What happen?"

"Did you...?"

"Did I...?"

"What were you doing?"

"Cleaning the classroom."

Jeongguk stared at him. Was he daydreaming again? It happened often, he gets so immersed into them sometimes that he can't tell if it actually happened or not. But the kiss, it felt so real, he can still feel the other's lips on his. Jeongguk shook his head. He was definitely daydreaming. Why in the world would Taehyung kiss him? And even if he did, why is he denying it? There's no way.

But that "dream" kiss really messed up Jeongguk, his mind became clouded and he couldn't even think right. Replaying the "dream" over and over again, confused on what the hell happened.

One thing was for sure, Jeongguk was going to fail his challenge of forgetting the boy for a week, he should've known it was mission impossible.

KTH

Taehyung watched as Jeongguk left with the boy, Pilsoo. He turned back to his book but was soon disrupted when he felt the vibration coming from the desk beside. Jeongguk's phone was ringing. Taehyung checked the caller ID. His mom was calling. The boy let it ring until it ended, not really knowing what to do. Then another shorter buzz came, a message from the same caller telling him to emergency and to answer in all caps. Taehyung bit his lip, contemplating for a bit before grabbing the phone and leaving the classroom.

He saw them head left, but after that, they could be anywhere. On his search, he was stopped by a girl, Amy, from the class over who he wasn't too familiar with. She requested to speak with him and Taehyung agreed.

"I like you," she said. "And I'd like to date you."

Taehyung stood there for a few seconds. He didn't prepare himself for this. The thought of her confessing didn't even cross his mind when all he could think about was finding Jeongguk.

"Well–" he started, but the phone began buzzing again.

"Is that Jeongguk's phone?" the girl asked, noticing Jeongguk's iconic bedazzled case.

"Yeah, I was looking for him..." Taehyung trailed on. As if on cue, he spotted Jeongguk walking. His head hung low and his steps weren't normal — weren't the usual confident strides.

The boy looked at them and continued walking, as if he saw nothing. Taehyung stopped Jeongguk and gave him his phone, only to receive a quiet thank you. He didn't look like himself at all. Taehyung began thinking of what in the world could've made him feel so down.

"Tae?" Amy called, snapping him out.

"Oh, um, I'm sorry. I'm very flattered, but I don't think it can work between us. I'm really sorry again."

She crossed her arms and sighed. "Why? You say the same thing to every girl."

Taehyung kept quiet.

She let out a short laugh. "Is it because of Jeon?"

"What?"

"Do you feel guilty or something? I know you've known him since you were little and all, but dude, seriously? Just because it'll break his heart doesn't mean you have to keep yours closed. Dating someone will actually help, like a wake up call. I mean, he's bound to get over you sooner or later, right? How long is he going to keep following you around like that?"

Taehyung pursed his lips. "I'm going to go now. Sorry."

Amy called after him, but Taehyung kept going. He went into the classroom and sat down. When Jeongguk came, he was still not himself. Taehyung couldn't even ask what was wrong since Jeongguk quickly shoved something into his bag and put his head down. Taehyung frowned, not knowing what he should do. He didn't mean to, his eyes just wandered until they saw the crumpled pink envelope with the heart sticker. He's received tons of letters like that before to not know what it was. Pilsoo must've confessed to Jeongguk.

Taehyung was confused at first, but then became a little worried. How serious was Jeongguk going to take Pilsoo's confession? Was he going to accept? Is he just confused about his feelings now? Maybe it was the emergency? All these questions clouded Taehyung's mind until break time was over. Jeongguk lifted his head, stretched his arms and smiled wide.

"You okay?" Jeongguk questioned. Taehyung nodded, relieved that the usual smiley Jeongguk returned but confused about the quick change.

Then it was P.E.. Taehyung changed in the boys washroom and headed straight out. Jeongguk was the last to arrive and when he did, he looked odd again. He wanted so badly to go and ask what's wrong, but he didn't. He couldn't. He didn't know why.

Maybe it was because he didn't have the guts to ask, but after that everything went wrong. From there, Jeongguk stopped talking to Taehyung. Not completely, just stopped saying anything more than what was necessary.

Taehyung had never felt more alone in those few days that when it came down the fifth day he just couldn't take it anymore. Amy's words kept repeating in his mind.

"...he's bound to get over you sooner or later, right?"

Those few words kept eating at Taehyung worries that he didn't hesitate to trap the boy's against the board with no fucking plan. He had no idea what he was doing, his body just worked on its own. Never has he ever been so bold. He wanted to look Jeongguk straight in the eye and confess everything he kept bottled inside of him, but that didn't go quite well. Jeongguk's eyes couldn't be met as they stared down at what Taehyung assumed to be his lips.

Taehyung waited a couple moments for the boy to look up at him, but it never came. He was still staring at his lips. Then when Jeongguk parted his own every so lightly, Taehyung finally realized what must be going through Jeongguk's mind.

A mischievous thought formed. The boy had let him suffer for the past four days, Taehyung was going to make the boy suffer for four of his own. Of course it wasn't so fair since Jeongguk had waited all this time for him, but it was just Taehyung's excuse for pushing the confession for a later date.

When Jeongguk finally snapped back, he didn't let the boy speak as he fulfilled a life-long wish of his and connected his lips with the other.

It felt so right. It felt so perfect. Like a million fireworks erupted before him. He could feel the boy tense up but his lips pouting out subconsciously to kiss him back. When he pulled away, he saw the shocked face of the boy. Taehyung backed away, and pretended like it never happened.

It was his first kiss with Jeongguk. His first kiss with a boy. It was first kiss, ever. And same for the latter.

One thing was for sure, Taehyung wanted to kiss his small yet soft lips again, and very soon at that.
