five: banana milk

JJG

To put it simply, Jeongguk was a dreamer. He was never quite on Earth. He was also talkative, but the rare moments he wasn't, the reason was always the same. He was imagining some makeshift world and writing out a plot to his alternate universe life and chasing after a happy ending. At first it was about silly things like becoming the King of the Banana Milk kingdom, then as he grew up, his interests changed and so did his dreams.

Taehyung. The most popular character in his current dreamworlds. He sometimes played himself, sometimes a role — Jeongguk's personal favourite was CEO Taehyung. He would imagine scenarios where Taehyung would confess to him, or the other way around and Taehyung reciprocating his feelings. He would get so immersed in them, he'd have to be shaken to wake up. He's been caught more than once slipping words in real life, leaving the people around confused and himself in a blushing mess.

So when he felt Taehyung's lips on his, he didn't know why he was so confused on the matter. It obviously had to be another daydream he thought, after all, why would he ever kiss him, and better yet, pin him against a chalkboard and kiss him in the most cliché moment possible. It just didn't add up, the quiet and reserved Taehyung would never do such a thing.

"Are you okay?"

Jeongguk snapped out of his thoughts. "Huh?"

Taehyung laughed shortly. "I asked if you were okay. You've been quiet. I'm not just saying today, for the past few days too." They were currently taking out the recycling to the back of the school to dump it out.

"Oh." Jeongguk nodded, not knowing exactly what to say as he was still going through such a dilemma.

"Are you, perhaps, avoiding me? Did I or do something wrong in the past week?"

Jeongguk eyes widened. There it was, his answer! They'd had this conversation before, but now that Taehyung is bringing up again proves that it never happened before, therefore it had to all be a dream.

"Of course!" Jeongguk screamed with glee putting all the pieces together.

"What?" Taehyung said, sounding very surprised.

"I mean– no! I've not been avoiding you. Sorry if it seems that way." Jeongguk smiled sweetly at the boy, threw the recycling into the bin, turned around and skipped happily back to class. Confused, Taehyung followed.

Jeongguk put away all the supplies they used to clean up. After a final look at the class to make sure everything is spotless, he grabbed his bag and slung it over his shoulder.

"I'm going to library today, wanna come?" Taehyung asked, stopping him as he was about to leave.

Jeongguk turned around, a pout on his lips as he recalled of his "can I survive without Taehyung" experiment. Oh how he wanted to break, but once Jeongguk got his mind on something, he'd never give up, which contradicted a little with the experiment but that didn't matter.

"Nah, I feel like just going home and sleeping. Gonna relax this weekend. Plus, it's too cold. Have fun, though!
Make sure to cover you neck and head!"

Taehyung nodded. With a smile, he walked right past the boy and ahead of him to the exit of the building. Jeongguk sighed watching him walk away. Even if he were to continue his little experiment, there was not point, since every second of it the boy's just been longing to be beside him. He's reminded of the few years he had to be without him after he moved. What a dreadful period in his life that was.

He banged his head against the classroom door to stop himself from running after him. Jeongguk needed gather and organize all his thoughts before proceeding.

And so as soon as he got home, Jeongguk plopped down on his bed and began thinking, thinking very hard. Then along the way he got distracted recalling his little made up world, how it would've been if he hadn't been snapped back to reality. Jeongguk laughed and rolled around his bed, hugging his koala plushie. As he continued, he felt his phone buzzing from the side. He picked it up without even looking at the contact and placed it on his ear.

"Hello~" he stretched, still thinking about the ongoing make out in his mind.

"Jeongguk?" the deep voice replied.

Jeongguk was immediately up recognizing the voice. He took a quick look at his screen to confirm it was Taehyung.

"Taehyung-ah? Why did you call?"

He heard a short laugh.

"Can't I call?"

"W-Well of course... it's just you never do. Is something up?"

"Mmmm, I don't know. Maybe. I feel weird."

"Weird?"

"Mhm."

Jeongguk blinked, not quite understanding what was going one

"Weird how?"

"I'm not sure. I thought you'd know."

Jeongguk almost laughed. Was there really something in this world that Taehyung didn't know but Jeongguk did?

"Well, how do you feel?"

"Well..."

Jeongguk listened intently. Never had any of their conversations been this odd.

"Maybe a stomachache? Headache? Hmm, maybe a heartache?"

"H-Heartache? Are you feeling alright? You should get it checked with a doctor. What if it's something serious!"

Taehyung laughed again. "No, nothing serious. Let's see. I'm getting nervous more often, my heart always racing so fast, I run out of breath sometimes too. At first I thought I'm just panicking over something but I didn't know what."

"When does it happen?"

"When I'm around people."

"People?"

"People I'm not familiar with, I guess."

"Ohh."

There was a long pause of silence, just listening to each other breathe quietly. Until Jeongguk broke it by clearing his throat.

"Then why don't you stick around people you know?"

"Because you keep avoiding me," he said quietly, Jeongguk not being able to barely hear it.

"Huh?"

"Nothing. Ah, the library is closing early today. I better pack up, I'll talk to you later. Bye."

"Bye..."

Jeongguk sighed, throwing the phone some place mindlessly. He buried his face into a pillow, screaming as loud as he pleased as the sound was muffled.

"Kim Taehyung! Why are you playing with my heart?!"

And what makes it worse for the boy is that Taehyung probably didn't even realize that. Or did he?

•—•—•

Jeongguk walked into class, hair messy and with a yawn. He hadn't sleep at all the previous few nights, any guesses why? He greeted a couple of his friends lazily as he walked past them. He placed the bag of a random chip bag he grabbed with the note he scribbled quickly down on Taehyung desk and immediately put his head down on his own.

"Jeongguk?"

"Yeah?"

"These are expensive. I told you, you don't need to–"

"It's not me!" Jeongguk whined, raising his head to look at Taehyung. And then it hit. He was there before he was. Taehyung lifted a brow, doing his best to hold back the laugh. Jeongguk pointed at the snack, opening and closing his mouth to find the right words.

"That-That wasn't– it's not mi– It wasn't me."

Taehyung nodded, propping his head in his palm as he rested his arm on his desk, finding it a little amusing. "Then who?"

"I j-just found it outside. The note is obviously from your secret admirer! They must've dropped it. I was just helping."

Taehyung nodded and peeled the note off and brought it close. "Eat. You're skinny like a stick. Like the sticks in this chip. Eat the chip, but don't become the chip. Yup, definitely something my secret admirer would say. Kinda rhymes too."

Jeongguk bit his tongue, not even remembering writing that. "Yup."

"Seems like you've got one too," Taehyung said, nodding towards the end of the other's desk.

"Huh?" Jeongguk sounded, head snapping towards the edge of his desk as he took his jacket off. There laid a singular carton of banana milk decorated in cute bunny stickers. He didn't even notice Taehyung, of course he didn't notice that.

"I wonder who that's from," Taehyung said.

A secret admirer is the last thing Jeongguk needed right now, but Jeongguk had a hunch of who it could be. He picked up the carton and jogged out of the class. He went to the first floor where all the juniors would be. He raced through the classroom until he was at the last class in the corridor. If he remembers correctly, he should be there. He stuck his head in, catching everyone's attention as he scanned the room. His eyes finally caught with the boy.

"Cha Pilsoo, we need to talk."

Confused, Pilsoo got up shyly, throwing an assuring glance at his classmates before following Jeongguk out of the classroom. They walked down more until they reached the end of the hallway. Jeongguk held up the milk carton and Pilsoo looked at it then tilted his head ever so slightly.

"Hyung, this is..."

"Pilsoo-ah, you're a really sweet boy, you know. You deserve someone better than me. I don't want to lead you on, or give you false hope. Save these things for someone you'll really like, hmm?"

"Hyung, I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't give that to you."

Jeongguk froze. "It's wasn't you?"

Pilsoo nodded. Jeongguk looked around, feeling a little awkward. He apologized and started heading back until he felt a tug on his sleeve holding him back. Jeongguk turned his head to look at the younger, who had his head down.

"You're really not going to give me a chance?"

Jeongguk smiled. He turned around completely and ruffled the boy's hair. "I'm sorry. When you're in a relationship and I'm not, come show it off in my face. Maybe I'll regret this that day."

"You're so strange, hyung," Pilsoo said. He let a short laugh. "I'm sorry if I said anything rude yesterday. I wish you the best of luck." He bowed and headed back to class.

"Ah, that boy is too cute, possibly cuter than me," Jeongguk muttered to himself. He then looked down at the carton in his hand. He walked back to class not wanting to be late, opening the carton and taking big gulps thinking over who it could be. The banana milk definitely brought his mood up.

He entered the classroom and stood in front of Hoseok's desk. Hoseok stopped his conversation to look up at the boy.

"What?"

Jeongguk squinted his eyes and hot up close to the other. "You got a crush on me?"

Hoseok stared back with a blank expression. With his index finger, he pushed Jeongguk back by his forehead. "It's too early to deal with your shit. Try again after lunch."

Jeongguk stuck out his tongue and scrunched his nose before stomping over to his desk and taking a seat, still intensely drinking.

"Are you okay?" Taehyung asked.

"No! This is so damn good! Where the hell did they get this!" he said angrily.

Taehyung nodded and continued eating the chips, a satisfied smile forming to his lips. Soon, the teacher entered the class and took roll call.

"Okay class," their teacher began. "Your self-study period officially starts now. Remember the mock exam is only two and a half weeks away. You're all seniors now, I expect you to be more mature and start taking this seriously. Stay warm, winter breaks almost here. You can do it!"

Jeongguk groaned. "Why does life hate me?" he muttered under his breath. He felt like pulling all his hair out to distract himself from all of this, make everyone believe he was going crazy and maybe actually become crazy along the way — if he hasn't already.

•—•—•

Jeongguk sighed. He sighed again, putting a little more breath into it. And another, followed by another, and another after another–

"Aish! What is it?" Hoseok asked. The boy was nearly crowding all of his desk, desperate for the attention.

"I'm sad!" he replied, dramatically covering his face with his hands and laying his head down.

"Why're are you sad, Jeongguk?"

"Because... I can't tell you! Ahhh!" The boy let out an annoying whine and slammed his head back down.

Hoseok shook his head, not getting a single thing that goes on in Jeongguk mind. He turned to Taehyung. "Do you know what's wrong with him?"

Taehyung looked up from his book to look at Hoseok, and the fake crying boy. "No." He got up, grabbed his jacket and left the classroom with the book.

"Ahh, both of them get weirder by the day," Hoseok mumbled. "Jeongguk-ah, is it true you gave up on Taehyung?"

Jeongguk's head snaps up. "What? Why?"

"Rumours have been floating around, y'know. I heard he rejected you. Seeing you all like this, is it true?"

Jeongguk groaned more and buried his head back down, wanting to scream. People really don't know how to keep their mouths closed, starting unnecessary rumours. Jeongguk didn't really care, he didn't make much of it as he knew what the truth was and that's all that mattered.

"This is dumb isn't it?" Jeongguk said.

Hoseok lifted a brow. He laced his fingers through the boy's hair and began petting it softly. "I don't know what you're going through, and you won't tell me, but hang in there. Think and be positive as you always do, and positive things will occur. Law of attraction, simple baby."

Jeongguk glanced and shot him a death glare. "Don't call me baby. Only Taehyung has the rights." This got Hoseok to start laughing which then spread to Jeongguk's lips.

Hoseok's right. He just had keep being himself, bright and happy. He'd been happy until this point. Even if Taehyung couldn't return his feelings, it's fine for him. As long as Taehyung is in his life and he is happy, Jeongguk is happy. Taehyung was the key to his happiness, no matter what relationship they were in. So maybe it's times to put an end to this experiment of his.

KTH

"Gosh, it's cold. It's only fall too, ugh. So Jeon's finally given up, huh?"

"Hm?"

Taehyung looked at Kumi, an exchange student from Japan who only seemed to talk to Taehyung when it involved something about Jeongguk. She also didn't talk to a lot of people, mostly just Yerim, pretending she could only speak Japanese whenever someone she didn't want to talk to tried to converse. Talking to Yerim got her acquainted with Jeongguk which automatically leaded to Taehyung as well.

The two were sitting out during their lunch break, where Taehyung just wanted to read a book in silence on a bench hidden by trees and enjoy the coldness of the winter weather.

"Haven't you heard the rumour?

Taehyung shook his head, confused as ever. He set his book down to listen to the other properly.

"Yappari." With a tsk, she explained, "There's a rumour going around that Jeongguk and that junior, Cha Pilsoo, are dating. Pilsoo apparently confessed some time ago and Jeongguk went to look for him this morning. Pilsoo went back to class smiling. Put two and two together, Jeongguk must've accepted! "

Taehyung thought over the morning. Jeongguk didn't seem to be excited, more troubled on finding the said admirer.

Kumi sighed. "Too bad. You two looked good together. Well, it may just be a rumour."

The bell rung, signalling the end of their little break. Kumi got up first. She clapped her hand, getting the other's attention.

"Snap out of it and realize you're in love with him! Aho, baka iuna. Do I have to do everything myself for something to get done around here?" She threw her arms up walked down the trail to class.

Taehyung found the girl a little weird, but he didn't have time to think about that right now. He knew Jeongguk probably was just confronting the boy about the banana milk but he still couldn't help but feel a little a jealous. He couldn't let this proceed, it was time for him to put an end to his little game and catch Jeongguk before it's too late. Now, to figure out how.

He couldn't just simply go up to him and confess or give him a banana milk carton and expect Jeongguk to understand, he needed a better situation. The right moment. The perfect moment. Maybe the two had to wait just a little longer.
