I stumbled through the sea of swaying bodies, my arms reaching out between them like they were seaweed waving in the sea. A blur of colours and noise and movement: everything buzzing but I couldn't perceive it; couldn't react to it. It was like my body was there but I'd checked out.
Then I saw her amongst the crowd. She was sitting with Susie, laughing and joking, her eyes warm and inviting. I crept over, tail between my legs, longing to hide but forcing myself forward.
"Oh hey cheeky one!" Susie beamed at me, "Where's your man?"
George didn't say anything; her face was stone. All the laughter and mirth had been drained from it and her lips were a thin straight line amongst her marble face.
"I don't know-" I managed to stutter, but as I did I stumbled forward and fell straight into George's lap. She caught me and pushed me back- but not abruptly, softly.
Susie turned to George as if I wasn't even there and slurred, "oh god she's so wasted!"
I felt invisible. It was primary school all over again. Standing alone in the playground, hoping someone would ask me to play with them. Pacing up and down the playground feeling invisible.
George grabbed hold of my hand then and pulled me towards her.
"Let's get of here," she whispered and all I could do was nod: stunned in the moment. Then she dragged me by the hand out of the room; leaving Susie to Luke's attention once more.
We were marching through Susie's apparently never ending garden, the cool breeze stroked my skin as we headed further and further into the labyrinth of trees.
"She's got a sweet place, huh?" George asked, breaking the silence.
"Yeah her Dad works in insurance or whatever- he makes a lot of money I think- she doesn't see him a lot-"
All of a sudden I was hurled backwards into the bushes, I wobbled and tried to hold my balance, but instead fell flat on my ass. Smooth.
"Oh my god! Are you OK?"
George squatted down beside me- her face expressionless.
"I'm alright," I managed to muster as I sat up.
We looked at each other for a moment, then we both burst into fits of laughter.
"I'm sorry," George spluttered as the tears rolled down her face, "I was trying-" she choked with laughter before continuing, "to be sexy."
All laughter stopped. And I edged a little closer to her, so we were skin to skin.
"You are," I said, my face going beetroot at my audacity. The inky black sky was dotted with stars and the cool breeze twirled around us. The buzz of music filtered in the background, but it felt like it was just us. Like we were the only people in the world.
I reached forward and pulled her hair out of its ponytail, watching her long dark strands fall across her shoulders. She was beautiful. She looked up, the confident and calm George, the girl nothing phased, but her eyes were shining with vulnerability and she looked like a little lost girl.
"I don't know what I'm doing," she whispered, her usually boisterous voice soft and silky.
"Neither do I," I said but I couldn't contain my smile. It was like everything inside me was on edge, waiting, anticipating, trembling: it was torture and delight all rolled into one.
She leant in and kissed me, her fingertips slowly stroking my arm as she did. Then her hand moved further up my arm and across my collarbone. She paused and her breath tickled my cheek. I pulled her back in: I wanted more. I needed more. Her hand moved down my chest and onto my breast, she traced the outline of my shape and all of a sudden I was pulling off my top and hers was gone and we were half naked under the glittering moonlight.
She pulled at my belt but I hesitated and pulled away.
"What's wrong?" She asked, her breath lingering on my ear, the sensation killing me with desire.
"I'm not- I don't know what to-" I stammered awkwardly.
She kissed me full on the lips and her dark eyes bored into mine.
"We'll work it out," she smiled, as she ripped off my belt. I pulled her towards me and kissed those blood red lips. My lips.
