Epilogue

Here it is! The epilogue! I hope you all enjoy! I will apologize in advance for any mistake. It's 3:45 in the morning here, so... forgive me if I made a typo.

Diana looked in the mirror one final time, adjusting her earrings carefully. Today was the day. Today was prom. Diana was waiting on Artemis now. He was on his way back. Apparently he had arranged for a rental car, and wouldn't tell her what it was. At this point, they could walk to her high school, and she would still be ecstatic. The girl moved away from the mirror, letting her sister use it now. Marisa was attending prom, as well, and still had a bit before her date, Diana's friend Justin, showed up. They'd be riding in whatever he drove over in; Artemis didn't figure there was enough room in whatever he was bringing for Marisa's large, princess-like dress.

As her mom began flashing a few solo pictures of Diana, there was a somewhat familiar sounding engine roar. Diana adverted her attention from the camera, and immediately went outside onto the front porch. Parked in her driveway was a car she had only seen on her television screen, a car she had only dreamed of sitting in- a 1967 Chevy Impala. Diana couldn't resist fangirling as she saw Artemis step out of the driver's seat, smirking all the while.

"This is the car your precious Winchesters drive, isn't it?" he asked as he approached the porch.

"Yessssssss!" Diana shrieked.

"So I did well?" Artemis looked for confirmation, stopping on the porch next to her.

"Yessssssss!" Diana repeated, pulling her boyfriend into a tight embrace as her eyes began watering up. "It looks just like Baby!"

Artemis smiled, returning the hug. "I'm glad. Don't doubt that I pay attention to your rants about your television shows," he said. "Just don't start crying. Your make-up will run, and I don't think you have time to fix it."

"I'm not crying, I'm... Okay, maybe I am crying," Diana answered, wiping her eyes a little bit. "And for your information, my make-up is water proof."

Before Artemis could give her any kind of response, Diana's parents and Marisa were filing out onto the porch as well. Diana swore her mother was going wild with how many pictures she was taking. The number of flashes was beginning to blind the girl, and probably Artemis, Marisa, and eventually Justin as well. After what seemed like an eternity, the flashing ceased, and they were well on their way to the school. What was sad was that they wouldn't be in the Impala for long; the school had arranged for the dance to take place in a small town called Frankenmuth, roughly twenty minutes north of them. So once everyone arrived at the school, they would all be boarding party buses.

When they got to the school, they drove past the entrance where most of the people were getting out of their vehicles, surely confusing most of the other students. Instead, Artemis drove to the freshly paved parking lot, and parked their car. As Justin and Marisa parked his car next to them, Artemis stepped out of the Impala and walked over to Diana's door, letting her out and taking her hand in his. The couple waited patiently for the other two to do the same before heading towards the mob of teenagers at the school doors. Diana confidently linked arms with Artemis, leading him up to the school. As they began passing some of the other students, Diana saw the eyes of her peers beginning to fall on them. Diana smirked; all the people who thought she had made Artemis up were eating their words now.

The group pushed their way through the crowd, past the door, and into the cafeteria where they would be waiting for the cue to get on the buses. They found a clearing and decided to claim it as their own. It was then Diana had the feeling someone was staring at her. She glanced up to see the blue eyes of her ex-boyfriend glaring at her from across the room. Diana noticed Brent had managed to find a date after all- some fake blonde, the girl she assumed was the one he had been seeing behind her back. After shooting them a smug look, Diana nudged Artemis' chin slightly with the top of her head, getting his attention.

"Yes, darling?" he asked, glancing down at her.

Diana went to say something, but stopped herself. This was going to be a nice evening, and no one was going to ruin it. "Nothing sweetie," she eventually stated, just as a group of some of her friends approached them.

A lot of what happened next was a blur to her. The bus ride and dinner passed without much incidence. Right before dinner, they announced prom king and queen (neither of which Diana voted for), and then the festivities really began. Music blasted through the air, making it hard to resist the urge to dance along. After a few songs had passed and all her friends abandoned her and Artemis to go dance, the girl grabbed his hand and drug him to the dance floor.

Artemis, of course, was hesitant to the idea of dancing, especially to the upbeat songs that were playing right now. "Diana... I... if this isn't similar to a waltz or slow dance, I have no idea what I'm doing," he confessed as they came to a stop near the edge of the dance floor. "I'm going to make a fool of myself."

"I'll show you. It's easy," Diana assured, taking the lead for a few minutes, trying her hardest to show her boyfriend how to properly dance to the pop-like songs playing, something that was proving to be difficult as Artemis had hardly any rhythm to speak of. Just when he was finally starting to get the idea, the song changed. The tempo slowed down and in an instant, the mood on the floor shifted drastically. The rapidly changing lights turned off, only to be replaced by hundreds of small clear lights to better set the mood of the song that was beginning to play.

"I believe now it's my turn to instruct you," Artemis stated, a smirk forming on his face. He took Diana's hand once again, and pulled her to close to him before wrapping his arms loosely around her waist.

"I suppose so," she responded quietly as she draped her arms over his shoulders. As soon as she did, the couple began slowly swaying to the song.

"...It's just another night and I'm staring at the moon

I saw a shooting star and thought of you..."

Both of them were soaking in the moment, both unknowingly sharing their first slow dance with each other. Neither of them spoke for several seconds, and when Artemis did finally say something, it was something Diana hadn't been expecting.

"I think this song is rather fitting, don't you?" he suggested.

Diana was rather impressed he knew the song, but she wasn't sure what he meant. "How so?"

"Just listen, love," Artemis replied.

And Diana did, trying to pick up on what he was trying to say. As the lyrics drifted through the air, the girl stared into his eyes, wondering what he was up to.

"...You're on the other side

As the skyline splits in two

Miles away from seeing you

But I can see the stars from America

I wonder, do you see them too?"

"I suppose that part is at least somewhat fitting," she responded. "Although the strangest part is that you somehow know this song."

"Oh but that's not all," Artemis cautioned, ignoring her saying it was strange. "I think perhaps the most reflective part is still coming up. Keep listening for just a bit longer."

Diana looked away from Artemis' face for a moment, staring blankly at his shoulder, waiting for the part he had been talking about.

"...And I know these scars will bleed

But both of our hearts believe

All of these stars will guide us home..."

"If you hadn't figured it out yet, love, I'll point it out to you," Artemis broke the silence. "You and I have been through a lot this past ten months or so. We've been through hell and back. When I came to America, I had no intention of making friends, let alone finding someone like you. Then the whole ordeal with Spiro... I was sure I was going to lose you." His voice was beginning to shake a bit, so he paused to calm down for a second. "We made it through that, and we survived all those months being over three thousand miles apart. The odds were against us, and yet... here we are."

Diana rested her head against his chest, breathing in deeply. "I wasn't going to give up so easily. It's not who I am. Regardless to how it looks, I don't fall in love effortlessly like that... and for some reason with you... I did. And when I love someone, I hold onto them. They could've put two oceans between us, and I would've held on even tighter."

"I know, darling, I know, which is why I think this song is really appropriate," Artemis went on. "You know how many nights I spent wondering if you were perhaps looking at the stars like I was? Wondering how you were holding up? Hoping your scar wasn't bugging you?"

"Probably just as many that I sat there wondering if you were sleeping properly, or if you were working on anything new, or if you were just as excited as I was about this," Diana guessed.

"Probably."

"...Back to the time you were lying next to me

I looked across and fell in love

So I took your hand

Back through lamp-lit streets and knew

Everything led back to you..."

That was something the song had right, and it was something Diana had expressed before. She had always felt that everything that had happened in life happened for a reason, and that still held true with her relationship with Artemis as well. Without going through everything else, the girl would've never bumped into the Irish boy at the museum all those months ago, and she certainly wouldn't be dancing with him at prom now.

"Before you, I never thought I would attend a school dance," Artemis admitted quietly. "They weren't my scene, and still aren't, but as long as I am with you... I don't mind being here."

"I feel like there's a compliment in there somewhere," Diana sassed back.

"There is," Artemis assured.

Diana smiled, moving her head off his chest to once again look him in the eyes. "Well, I certainly don't mind being here with you either," she added. "In fact, I'm quite glad I was able to take you."

Artemis pulled her a bit closer to him, holding her close. "As am I." He paused once again, as if debating something over in his head. "I'm just hoping that there are many more adventures to look forward to once this night has ended."

Diana moved one of her arms, making sure her wrist was visible. "I still have a bracelet to fill up," she reminded, shaking it slightly before resting it back in its original position. "If I have it my way, I'll always be with you, Artemis, and that means more than enough adventures together, I'm sure. Especially since when you head back home, I'll be coming with you and then we'll be in school together too."

Artemis smiled. "I suppose you do have a point," he decided. "Life will be much more interesting with you around, and I cannot wait for that."

"Same here, Arty."

Even in the dim lighting, Diana could see that Artemis was blushing profusely. Any time they talked about anything remotely personal, this happened. The girl found it adorable, and honestly hoped it never changed. "I love you, Diana," he swore, "and I hope tonight is still only the beginning for us and our life together. I know I'll be around as long as you let me."

A few tears slipped from Diana's eyes unchecked. "I love you too, Artemis. And I hope it is too, because I plan on bugging you for as long as I can."

His embrace tightened even further, and for a few moments, time seemed to stop as the couple stood there in the middle of the dance floor, completely oblivious to everyone else around them. Diana didn't care; they were having a moment. Nothing else mattered in the world. There was nothing that was going to take this from her. She had never imagined sharing such an important and beautiful moment with someone like Artemis, and here she was, embracing the man she found to be absolutely perfect at her senior prom.

"...I can see the stars from America..."

As the song dwindled to an end, Artemis relinquished his grasp on her just slightly, just enough so he could plant a gentle kiss on her lips. Diana kissed him back, just as gently and lovingly as he had, mostly to avoid being scolded by some of the chaperones. After a few seconds, the couple pulled away from each other a little more, Artemis keeping one arm wrapped around her waist.

"Shall we take a break and get something to drink?" he asked.

"I thought you would never ask," she answered him, smile still lingering on her face.

With that, Artemis led his girlfriend from the dance floor and towards the punch area. The rest of the night, Diana couldn't help but be glad that all those months ago she had had the courage to speak to Artemis, that she had been kidnapped... because without the turmoil, she may have never landed the man of her dreams. Sure, life was never going to be easy with Artemis around, but that was something Diana was more than willing to deal with. There was always going to be some kind of adventure with him, some good and some probably dangerous. But Diana wasn't worried about it. After all, who else had accomplished everything Artemis Fowl had?
