Chapter 3: First Day
I glanced at my clock and sighed. It was time to get up despite what my body wanted to do. I slipped out of pajamas and into the hot shower. The warm water woke me right up, getting me excited for the day ahead. I got ready quickly after realizing what the day held for me. I held up the standard U.A. uniform and smiled contently. After putting it on, I twirled in front of my full length mirror, striking different poses. My long pastel pink pigtails tumbled down my back and shoulders. I brushed out my bangs to make sure that they hung straight and tightened my red tie. Too hyper to force any kind of proper breakfast down, I nibbled on some sliced Asian pear while blasting my favorite songs on my phone.
Finally, it was time for me to leave! I grabbed my bag, that I had already attached a multitude of pins and key chains to, and bounced out the door. I plugged my earbuds in and turned up the music. Forgetting that I was in public, I began to dance. The steady beats kept me moving rather quickly as I proceeded towards the elevator. Once inside, I merely kept the beat with my foot trying to keep my composure as much as I could. When I reached the bottom, I dashed outside before any of the other riders; tight spaces have always bothered me. I waved cheerfully at Mimi before I left, pushing the heavy glass doors open with a resolve that I had never felt before.
The fresh air pushed my hair back, the wind toying with the edge of my miniskirt. I half walked, half danced down the street, totally ignoring all the people who were staring at me strangely. As I continued along my merry way, I felt a tap on the shoulder. "Huh?" I looked back to see two teenage girls who looked just a little older than me. "You're Hana's younger sister aren't you!" They spoke in perfect unison and it scared the shit out of me. "Uhhhh nope. You mean Hana the famous actress right?"
"Yes! That's the one!" They nodded so fast I'm surprised that they didn't have whiplash. "Yeah sorry, I only know her from the big screen." I shrugged and smiled apologetically before putting my earbuds back in. I practically started running, hoping that they wouldn't see through my lie. "That was a close one..." I let out a sigh of relief once I knew that I was safe. Stuff like that had been happening more and more often ever since Hana played the lead female in a popular vampire series. "I'm proud of her and all but this is annoying as hell..."
After a few more songs went through on my playlist, I could see U.A. which was only a few blocks away. I picked up my pace a little, eager to start the day. When I came upon the gates, I felt myself release a breath I didn't know that I was holding. As soon as I crossed over into this school, my whole life would change. "I'm ready for this! I've been working my whole life to get to this moment. Just another milestone on my way to become a hero!" But just before I could take the monumental step, I felt someone push me from behind. "Ahh!" I lost my balance and crashed onto the ground. "Ouchie!" I glared at the person who had bumped into me only to see them looking down at me with a surprised look on their face. It was the blonde boy from the entrance exam. "Watch where you're going!"
"What are you talking about?! You bumped into me!" I pouted childishly after getting up and dusting my skirt off. "You should at least say sorry you know!" He just angrily walked away and mumbled something back that I couldn't hear. I grabbed my bag that was still lying on the ground and headed toward U.A. What a way to start off my first day...
"Class 1-A, huh... I think this is the room." I struggled to push open the heavy door; yet the scene inside was well worth the work. Students of all kinds were neatly packed into a classroom that had exactly 20 desks. There was a tall muscular student yelling at the blonde kid from before, although it looked like the blonde couldn't care less. There was a raven headed student (literally!) talking with a boy that had a tail. A girl with the biggest set of boobs that I have ever seen and another that looked like a really cute frog were chatting quietly in their desks.
I went to go take my seat, setting my bag down, when I felt someone's gaze on me. I turned around to be met with a sharp toothed grin. "Kirishima-kun!" I was practically beaming when I saw him; all last night I was worried on whether or not we were going to be in the same class or not. Better yet, we had gotten seats right next to one another. Kirishima bashfully scratched the back of his head, his cheeks a little pink as I jumped for joy.
When I had finally calmed down enough to remain still, we began to talk about the campus and the teachers. "I wonder if we'll have All Might as our teacher!"
"That'd be so awesome! He's so manly, you know? I can't believe that he'll be teaching this year..." Before Kirishima could finish his sentence, a yellow sleeping bag wormed it's way inside as three other students sheepishly found their seats. "There's no way..." Could that be our teacher?
The man stood up, pulling the bag off of him; He had long, ink-black hair that was messy, almost like he had just rolled out of bed, and his bloodshot eyes only further proved that point. "Hmm... It took you guys eight seconds to quiet down. Time is a precious resource. You lot aren't very rational, are you? I'm your homeroom teacher, Shota Aizawa. Pleased to meet you. Quickly now. Change into your gym clothes and head out to the grounds." Everyone was still in a mild state of shock as we trotted towards the locker rooms to change.
While I was putting on my iconic U.A. gym uniform I felt someone tap me on the shoulder. I turned around to see the frog girl from before. "Hello, my name is Tsuyu Asui but, please call me Tsu." I sent her a big smile. "I'm Miku Chiho!" Tsu gave me a shy grin back and closed her locker. "Do you know anything about our teacher?" I shook my head to Tsu's question. I looked at all the other girls in our class and none of them seemed to know either.
"Maybe he's just not that popular?" I jumped at the response. There was a floating set of panties along with a bra to right of Tsu. "Umm?"
The undergarments laughed at my confused expression. "I'm Hagakure Toru, my Quirk is being invisible."
"Oh..." I let out a sign of relief. "I'm sorry I should have guessed." Everyone laughed at my surprise and followed up with introductions. By the time we left the locker room, I already knew the names of all the girls. We dashed down the hallway, not wanting to be late.
We lined up with everyone else; I ended up between Kirishima and Kaminari. "Okay everyone, we're going to be taking a fitness test." Aizawa Sensei picked up a tablet and began typing something.
"What?! But we're going to miss orientation if we don't hurry! It's about to start!" Ochako pointed toward the main building. "How irrational... If you want to sit around and hang our with your friends after school then this isn't the course for you." Everyone averted their gaze and poor Ochako shrank down, looking as though she wanted to melt into the ground. "Bakugo, come here." The blonde guy from before walked towards our teacher.
"So that's his name... Bakugo."
Bakugo walked up was given a softball. "How far was your throw in middle school?"
"67 meters."
"Okay, now try it with your Quirk. Anything goes just stay within the white circle." Bakugo gripped the ball in his large hands and smirked. Getting into stance, I could practically see his muscles ripple as he threw his momentum forward. Before the ball could leave his hands though, he let off a controlled explosion, propelling the ball through the air. The tablet in Aizawa Sensei's hands lit up and he showed us; 705.2 m.
I was one of the first to understand the gravity of that number. "705.2 meters... He threw it 705.2 meters..." I mumbled to no one in particular, completely shocked by Bakugo's raw power. Kirishima clenched his fists, but when I looked at him, he had a look of determination on his face along with his iconic grin. "This is awesome!" Kaminari cheered and other students began to chime in.
Aizawa Sensei let out a dry laugh. "Awesome... You say? You're hoping to become heroes after three years here and you think it'll be all fun and games? Right... The one with the lowest score across all 8 events will be judged as hopeless and expelled." The cheers stopped; a sickening tension filled the air and our classmates began eyeing each other. Who was the weakest link? Who was going to be expelled?
Aizawa Sensei took us over to the 50 meter dash was being held. Apparently we would be doing the ball throw later on. I was called up to the mark and as I was walking over I saw Kirishima flash me a smile along with a thumbs-up.
I lined up and took a deep breath. "All I have to do is fly across... It'll be way faster than running." I devised a plan in my head in attempts to calm my frazzled nerves. The countdown had started; 3-2-1-GO!
I took off, releasing a small amount of pressure that I had been building up behind my back. It launched me forward and I swiftly crossed the finish line. "4.2 seconds!" the machine chirped. I couldn't help but get a little excited after seeing that number. It wasn't going to be the fastest time, but it was still an improvement from my time in middle school.
I walked back to my spot in the lineup, a proud look on my face. Kirishima held his hand for a high five, but our height differences were painfully obvious. I jumped up, my palm barely slapping his, my cheeks turning pink while he laughed.
As our class went through the events, everyone seemed to be producing some crazy numbers; well almost everyone. One boy, Midoriya, kept pulling results that were rather low for a hero course. Eventually we got to the pitching test. Kirishima had been doing incredibly well even though his Quirk didn't really benefit him in these situations. "He's... He's so strong and-and manly..." I watched him intensely as he lined up for the pitch. After winding up, Kirishima let the ball fly through the sky.
"75 meters!" Aizawa Sensei's tablet announced the answer for everyone to hear. I cheered for Kirishima as he sheepishly walked back. "I wish my Quirk was better suited for stuff like this..." He flashed a sad smile and scratched the back of his head. I playfully punched his arm. "Good thing you're already amazing without your Quirk."
Kirishima opened his mouth to say something but Aizawa Sensei cut him off. "Uraraka Ochako." I jumped up and down, waving to her as she took the ball. Without wasting any time, she gently threw the ball. It started to float upwards, continuing to float until we couldn't see it anymore.
Aizawa Sensei showed us the screen; there was literally an infinity sign on it! Everyone began mumbling to themselves in surprise. "Midoriya Izuku." Aizawa Sensei called up the next person. "It's him!" I pulled on Kirishima's arm. "I thought that you said he was the one who defeated that robot. Why isn't he using his Quirk huh?"
"I don't know... Maybe it has some really bad recoil? I mean he got really hurt during the entrance exam..." Kirishima and I stared at Midoriya; he got into stance when his arm began to glow. He swung for the fences, launching the ball. However, it depressingly stayed within the boundaries. "I erased your Quirk." Aizawa Sensei approached Midoriya, his eyes red and glowing.
"Eraserhead!" I face-palmed myself. "Huh?" Kirishima looked back at me. "Who's Eraserhead?"
"An underground hero and apparently our teacher. He always avoided the media because he thought that they got in the way. Despite this, people have documented hundreds of villains that he's beaten over the years. There are probably even more that were kept under wraps, but overall he's an incredible strong hero..."
"What's his Quirk?"
"As long as he can see you, he can nullify your Quirk completely." I watched as Aizawa Sensei spoke angrily with Midoriya, there words just out of earshot. After another minute or two, Midoriya was released and the ball was given back to him. I watched him with worried eyes, clenching my fists. I didn't want to be expelled, but I didn't want him to do poorly either...
I felt a hand on my shoulder; Kirishima sent me a warm smile. "You're worried about him aren't you."
"Yeah... I don't want anyone to do badly!" I felt his hand squeeze my shoulder a bit. "Don't be nervous for him though. Midoriya seems like a real man, I'm sure he has a plan of some sort." I nodded my head and decided to listen to him. We watched as Midoriya pulled him arm back for the second time, but this time there was no glow. However, when he let go, the ball flew over our heads and disappeared.
"Whoa!" I gasped and watched it fade away. I looked back to Midoriya to see him wincing in pain, his index finger purple as though it was broken.
We finished the rest of out events rather quickly; Everything seemed easy for me, but, then again, my Quirk was very versatile and could be applied to most of the events. I just hoped that my results were enough to keep me in the course.
The entire class gather around Aizawa Sensei to see the results. I bit my lip; I didn't want to see anyone be expelled! We had all worked so hard to get here it seemed cruel to do this. Clasping my hands together, I nervously began to read through the list. "Number 9! I'm safe..." All the girls were safe and Kirishima was too. I shook his shoulder while jumping and pointing at his name. "Look Kirishima! You're number 8! You're so cool!"
"You think so?" He grinned and pulled one of his arms into a muscle and covered the bicep with his other hand. "You did really well too you know!"
I shyly giggled. "The grip strength killed me. And the upper body was hard too..." Kirishima and I glanced back at the scoreboard to see where everyone else lined up. My eyes fell upon number 20; Midoriya Izuku. My heart sank. In the heat of the moment, I had forgotten that someone was getting expelled. Poor Midoriya had a look of complete dismay on his face and who could blame him.
"Oh I forgot to mention..." Aizawa Sensei ran his fingers through his hair, revealing an evil grin. "No one is getting expelled. That was just a little lie to help motivate and push yourselves. It was the most rational option." Everyone was silence in the shock except for Momo. "How did you guys not see through that? I figured it out from the start..."
"WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US?!" Kaminari's hands twitched a little as he yelled at Momo. "I thought that you would have figured it out by now." She shrugged, but everyone was too relieved to care that much; especially Midoriya. I could see him crying near Ochako and another boy that was wearing glasses (I think that his name was Iida). I felt someone grab me from behind, embracing me in a tight hug and lifting me off the ground.
"Huh?" A pair of strong arms were wrapped tightly around my waist and I felt my cheeks heat up. Once I got back on the ground, I turned around to see Kirishima smiling at me. "What was that for?!" I covered my face with my hands and pigtails. When he saw my distress, Kirishima began to wring his hands. "Wait! Did I do something wrong?!"
"No, you just caught me off guard is all..." I let my face reemerge, hoping that most of my blush had drained away. He let out a sigh of relief and scratched the back of his head. "Don't make me worry like that!"
"You were worried?" I playfully teased him, lightly punching his shoulder. "Well... Umm..." Kirishima looked away, his cheeks and ears completely red. "We should go change." He started to leave with the rest of our class while I walked back with Tsu and Toru.
After getting dressed, the sun was already setting. I waved to the girls before running toward the exit. I was glad for my school issued jacket for the air was surprisingly cold. I walked home by myself and I suddenly wished that I had some company. But the spot next to me stayed empty and I was left to weave through the masses of people by myself.
When I got to my apartment building, it was dark and my hands were frozen. No one bothered to greet me when I walked in; all the staff were busy with guests and Mimi had left already. The elevator ride was one that I took by myself and the hallway to my room seemed longer than normal. Once I had reached my door and unlocked it, I set my stuff down. Making sure the door was closed and locked back, I looked around my apartment. No one was here but me; I didn't even get any mail.
I checked my phone. No texts. No calls. And my only notification came from an otome game that I enjoyed occasionally. I laid down on my back and bit my lip. Why? Why was I feeling like this? I was supposed to be happy today!
But still, I laid there, completely alone.
