Chapter 15: Finals
I clutched my hands together tightly; the day of the final exam was upon us. I had heard a rumor from Ochako-chan that the exam would consist of fights against the robots in our entrance exam, but I was still nervous. Would it really be that simple? I felt someone touch my shoulder and I looked over to see my best friends. "Ochako-chan! Tsu-chan!"
"Hey Chiho-chan! Are you okay? You seem really nervous..." I looked up at the sky as we walked, chewing my lip. "Yeah, I actually am really nervous. I know that it's only supposed to be robots according to the upperclassmen..."
"But?" Tsu-chan gently pressed for me to elaborate. "Well... It's just a hunch, but, I wonder if robots are really all we're going to have to deal with. I mean, it just seems unlikely with all the past events that have been happening, especially dealing with the League of Villains. And, at the very least, I have a hard time believing that we'll be fighting robots because all we would be doing is exercising our physical abilities."
"Is there a problem with that?" Ochako-chan tilted her head before putting her helmet on. I nodded my head, fidgeting with the ribbons that wrapped my hands. "In retrospect, I don't know why this didn't cross my mind before. But, think about it guys; we're heroes. Our job is to keep people safe, right? To save them. As heroes, we can't simply be good fighters. We have to be able to fight and rescue. Just like how they had those extra points in the entrance exam."
"I see what you're saying," Tsu-chan put a finger to her chin. "It makes sense, kero, but how will they measure our growth in that area? Will the do rescue points again?"
"I haven't figured that part out yet. And that's why I'm nervous..." I shook my head, thinking so hard that my head was beginning to hurt. There were just too many options for them to use; a point system, real people in addition to the robots, or maybe something completely different. "Listen Chiho-chan, there's nothing that we can do about it now... We might as well try and relax before the test starts!" Ochako-chan chirped, bringing her fingers together.
"Ochako-chan is right," Tsu-chan added with a grin. "In the meantime, let's catch up. It's been a while since we talked as a group." I smiled at my friends, letting out a breath that I had been holding. "That actually sounds great... Thanks guys!"
"Of course! We're always here for you!" Ochako-chan wrapped me in a strong side hug while I giggled. "I think that I've been spending too much time hanging out with Midoriya... His habits are starting to get to me!" They laughed at my remark, all of us knowing that it wasn't far from the truth. "Speaking of which," I turned to Ochako-chan with a sly grin. "How's it going between you two?"
"Eh?!?!" Her face turned bright pink and she waved her hands around wildly. "T-T-There's nothing going on between us! What could possibly make you think that, hahahaha, you're so funny Chiho-chan!" Tsu-chan and I watched her back away slowly, her feet starting to come off the ground. "Ochako-chan, you're floating." Tsu-chan pointed out, but Ochako-chan was too busy hiding her face and muttering to herself, probably trying to convince herself that we were wrong.
"Uraraka-san! You're floating!" Midoriya had walked up us, noticing our floating pink friend in the sky. "I don't think that she can hear you..." I leaned over, whispering to him. "How are we going to get her down?" Iida motioned to her with this arms stiff as usual. "I'll go get her!" I easily summoned a bit of wind that pushed me up as though I was a feather. I flew up next to her, gently grabbing her arm. "C'mon, we'll talk more about that later." She meekly nodded as I led her back down.
We all chatted, laughing about trivial things as we tried to calm our nerves. I couldn't help but stare at everyone. I never got tired of seeing them in their hero costumes. I thought that it was so cool to see them like this; we really looked like pros. Speaking of pros, I noticed our teachers begin to congregate near us, quietly talking to one another. That bad feeling from earlier came back with vengeance. If we were just fighting robots, would all of our teachers need to be here. And the principle?!
I tried to take some more deep breaths; it could just be standard for all the teachers to come. They would need a lot of eyes to be able to grade all of us. Yeah, that's probably what it was... Hopefully. "Oi! Chi!" A certain smiley redhead was barreling toward me with his arms wide open. "Hey Kiri," He wrapped me in a tight hug before I could finish, but I didn't mind. Nobody was paying us any attention, but I still felt embarrassed by his display of affection. Even so, I hugged him back, gaining some comfort from his touch.
As we pulled away, I felt someone's gaze on me. Searching for the culprit, I found Ochako-chan staring at me with wide eyes and mouth agape. We made eye contact, and this time it was my turn to become red in the face. She looked between the two of us, her gaze bouncing back and forth. Tsu-chan had noticed her strange behavior and said something that I couldn't hear. Ochako-chan wasted no time pointing toward the two of us, whispering furiously with a big smile on her face. Both of them looked at me, giving me huge smiles and thumbs-ups.
"What're they doing?" Kirishima noticed my friends, returning their smile and thumbs-up. "I have absolutely no idea..." He laughed, slipping his hand into mine. "You're nervous, huh?" I stiffened up at his words, glancing at him with wide eyes. "Do I really look that scared?"
"Yeah, you're even stiffer than Iida right now." I groaned, while Kirishima chuckled. "Don't worry, whatever happens in there happens. All we can do is try our best." I sighed a bit before putting on a real smile. "You're right. Funny enough, Ochako-chan told me the same thing. Maybe I really am over thinking this whole thing."
"I mean, knowing you, that's very possible." Kirishima ribbed me lightly and I let out a small giggle. "Alright everyone!" The monotone voice of Aizawa-Sensei somehow made it's presence know even over all the noise of our class. Everyone congregated around the teachers, who were all still here, unfortunately. "Let's begin your practical exam. Of course, it's possible to fail this exam too, so if you want to go to that summer training camp, then you better not mess this up."
"Wow, thank you so much for calming my nerves, Sensei!" I muttered mockingly, Kirishima and Kaminari chuckling at my sarcasm. "Knowing you guys, you probably asked around and you might think that you have a vague idea of how this'll go..." Ochako-chan and I looked at one another nervously. "Did he just say think?" I whispered, Ochako-chan nodding her head with furrowed brows.
"It's a robot rumble, like the entrance exam!" Kaminari yelled with a glowing smile on his face. Aizawa-Sensei's scarf ruffled around, relieving the principal that I had seen earlier. "Not quite! Various circumstances have demanded a revision to the exam format!" Kaminari stopped cheering, simply freezing in place with horror. My head sunk, my pigtails drooping sadly. "I knew it was too easy..."
The principal went on to explain the new format of the exam, explaining why the choice had been made. "From now on, we'll focus on battles against flesh-and-blood opponents. It is critical that our teaching simulates practical experience as closely as possible. As such, you students will be pairing up," He gestured to the teachers behind him as well as sticking a furry paw in his chest. "And fighting one of the teachers you see here!"
Our class became absolutely silent, shock donning our faces. "Your pairings and assigned teachers have already been decided! Your battle moves, grades, and friendships with one another have all been taken into account. Now without further ado!" The principle happily listed off the pairings, my mouth getting drier with each passing second. "Kaminari Denki and Miku Chiho! You shall be my opponents for the day!" Our principal looked at us, no longer seeming as soft and cuddly as before.
"Mikuuuuuu!!!" Kaminari practically tackled me from behind, his loud voice right in my ear. Still, I was incredibly relieved to be working with him; we knew each other so well that it would hopefully make things a bit more manageable. I listened out for the other pairings as Kaminari held onto me tightly. Once everyone was listed, we were allowed to go to watch the fights as they happened or leave to strategize with our partner. "Hey, Kaminari, I'll be right back," I ran off before he could protest, disappearing into the crowd of students.
"Hey! Kiri!" I jumped up and down to be seen over the heads of my classmates. My boyfriend saw me and excused himself from Sato. "Looks like you were right..." Kirishima sighed, rubbing the back of his neck, anxiety etching its way into his face. I wrapped my arms around him, giving him a quick squeeze before letting go. "That doesn't matter right now... Just focus on doing well! I know that you can do it, Kiri." With that, I leaned forward, giving him a small peck on the cheek.
He rubbed the spot bashfully, turning a little pink. "What was that for? Good luck?" I averted his gaze, pushing his head away from mine. "Maybe." I smirked a bit, still slightly embarrassed. Kirishima gently held my chin with his hand, keeping it steady while bringing his lips against my cheek. "Now we both have good luck!" A smile that displayed all of his pointy teeth lit up his face while I tried to regain composure.
"Oi, Kirishima!" Sato ran up to us, waving his hand. "We have to leave now..." His speech slowed down, becoming aware that we were in the middle of something. "O-O-Oh, sorry... I didn't mean to interrupt anything!" Sato's face turned beet red, his eyes looking anywhere but at us. Kirishima laughed loudly, slapping his friend on the back. "No worries! You didn't interrupt anything."
"Yeah, I was just coming to wish him good luck before the test." Sato immediately let out a sigh of relief, the red fading from his face. "Okay, I'm glad that it wasn't anything like... Umm... You know!" He chuckled awkwardly, both Kirishima and I joining in. "Anyways, Kirishima, we really should get going."
"Yeah, of course." Kirishima pounded his fists together, his normal carefree expression turning into one of fierce determination. I waved to the both of them as they ran off toward where Cementoss was. Kirishima looked back at me, making a heart with his hands and winking before sprinting after his teammate.
I giggled to myself, almost floating back to where Kaminari was. "You sure seem happy," he noted, gesturing to my rosy cheeks and dreamy smile. I shrugged my shoulders, enjoying the fact that Kirishima still got just as flustered as I did over the little things. We walked toward an open grassy area to talk strategy. Kaminari laid down on the green with an unnecessarily loud sigh. "What match are we again?"
"The sixth one."
"Okay, cool, we got time then." He sat up to look me in the eye, his bold yellow iris boring into my rose ones. "So, not to be intrusive or anything, but I just gotta know. What's the deal with you and Kirishima?" I froze at his question, blush already starting to take over my face. "W-W-What do you mean?" Kaminari groaned at my response as I casually twirled a piece of grass between my fingers. "You know what I mean, Miku! The way he looks at you all the time. How you two always seem to be together, like more than usual. He gets jealous if anyone say literally anything about you. And I'm pretty sure that I've seen you two holding hands before."
"Really?" I feigned surprise, throwing the blade of grass into the air. "You must be imagining things again, Kaminari."
"I'm not this time, I swear!" He threw his hands against the ground, pouting like a toddler. I couldn't help but laugh at his face. "Okay, okay, calm down! Yeah, we've kinda had a thing going since the Sports Festival..."
"What?! It's been that long?! You're kidding me..." His jaw dropped, eyes practically popping out of his head. "Nope, it's true!"
"Jeez, I thought that you two had something going, but man you two have something going!" I rolled my eyes at his remark. "Calm down, it's not that serious." Kaminari rubbed his chin with a smirk. "Well, it sure doesn't seem that way." Before he could tease me anymore, I heard the buzzer go off; the first test had been completed. "Wait! It's already been thirty minutes?!"
"No way..." Kaminari checked his phone and let out a sigh. "It's only been fifteen, don't worry. But doesn't that mean the first test is finished?"
"Yeah, it does." My thoughts had already begun to fly around in my head. "So basically, there could be a lot of reasons for this. Kirishima and Sato could have either escaped or captured Cementoss by now. Or..." Kaminari hung on to my every word. "Or?!"
"Or, they... They could have been defeated completely. In only fifteen minutes..." Sweat dripped down the back of my neck; the horrifying reality of just how tough our teachers were began to sink in. "No way... There's no way, Miku! I get that our teachers are tough, but you can't be serious! They even have the weights on!"
"That's the thing Kaminari. The weights are only a major hindrance if you're moving. While it's still not comfortable having all that on, it'll affect certain teachers more than others. Because Cementoss-Sensei can still operate perfectly fine from a standstill, there's no need for him to move needlessly and eat up his stamina. Instead, he can still fight, even if he's just sitting on the ground."
"So?!" Kaminari was starting to look panicked, but we both had to realize this. "So, it'll be almost as hard to beat him in this state than in his normal state."
"We don't have to worry though, right? No other teachers have a Quirk like Cementoss-Sensei." Kaminari smiled hopefully at me. "Unfortunately, that's not the case. While most of our teachers will experience a large amount of resistance, some won't. For example, if Midnight-Sensei chooses a prime location, then she, in theory, won't have to move for the whole fight. She could simply activate her Somnambulist Quirk and then neither Mineta nor Sero could get close to the escape gate or her. I think this could also apply to Ectoplasm-Sensei, since he has his clones and doesn't have to move himself. Thirteen-Sensei and Mic-Sensei if they choose proper locations. Even so, their movement would be minimal."
"What about the principal?"
"Well... Due to the nature of his Quirk, I doubt that he'll be trying to fight us head on. Rather, he'll probably devise a strategy to fight us from afar, distracting us from the main point of escape or capture, leading us to chase our tails until the time runs out. So, the weights probably won't be that much of a problem for him." I let out a sigh, rubbing my temples lightly. "How are we even supposed to fight against that?!" Kaminari cried, pacing back and forth when the next buzzer rang out, signalling the end of another match. "Well, we might as well kiss that summer camp goodbye, Miku!"
"Kaminari!" I grabbed his shoulders, looking up at my taller partner. "First off, take a deep breath." He did what I asked and I felt his muscles relax a bit. "Okie, good job. Second off, there's no way that we're failing so get that ridiculous idea out of your head. Both of us are being way too pessimistic. We don't know if Kirishima and Sato won or lost. Anything can happen! We just have to think our ways out of this fight."
"Right..." Kaminari meekly nodded his head, chewing on his lip. "We can do this, Kaminari." I brought my hands into fists with a confident grin on my face, despite my impending nerves. He let out a small laugh, his normal smile returning. "Yeah! Let's do this!"
"We can't do this!" Kaminari and I were currently running around the industrial maze that made up our battlefield. Buildings crumbled around us, almost crushing us at every given moment. I rolled out of the path of some falling rubble, pulling Kaminari with me. "Looks like the escape plan won't work..."
"You're kidding me!" He yelped, both of still frantically looking for signs of the next attack. "He's probably already blocked off most of the path ways to get there. Right now, I bet he's leading us around and around to make us loose our bearings." There was another loud crash followed by more debris falling our way. Kaminari tackled me, who was still lost in thought, and we landed inside of a building with the entry way blocked off. "Thanks Kaminari..."
"No problem..." We both panted for a little, shaking slightly from the constant rush of adrenaline that had been feeding into our bodies. "What are we gonna do though? How can we beat him if we can't survive five minutes out there?!"
"I'm sure there's a way... His Quirk is High Specs. I bet, if anything, he's simply toying with us right now. It's like we're playing a huge game of shogi."
"Shogi?"
"Yup, shogi. Right now, he's limiting the territory that we can cover by advancing his 'pieces'. One by one he has been 'capturing' our own, or limiting our options. For us to win this game, we can't be focused on the pieces that we loose. Rather, we have to keep our eyes on the king." I let out a dry laugh. "He's clever, that's for sure. By playing this how he is, our only choice is to capture him."
Kaminari groaned, burying his face in is hands. "If what you say is right, then how are we supposed to win? His Quirk is literally being smart." There was another crash and small cracks began to appear on the ceiling. I grabbed his hand and we began running again, down the halls of the storage room. "I have an idea. But you've gotta trust me." We made it to a window which I wasted no time kicking out. The glass shattered from the impact of my metal soles and we both jumped out just as the roof caved in.
"Okay, Kaminari, can you sense electrical currents?" As we ran, I listened for where the initial sound was coming from. "Yeah, I can." He ran behind me, occasionally being lifted off the ground by my Quirk to help us dodge. "Perfect! So tell me, is there any that is particularly strong around here?"
"Well there are a bunch of generators and electrical boxes around here, but their charge is pretty low. Wait... There's something on the far edge of the field that's using a lot. Probably like a machine or something."
"Damn him!" I shouted, stomping my foot on the ground. "I was scared something like this would happen..." I grabbed Kaminari, pulling him around a corner. "What's wrong, Miku?!" After making sure that there was no immediate noise, I looked him directly in the eye. "The principal is on the other side of the field, attacking us with the affects from chain reactions by using the machine as the perpetrator." He looked at me, still confused. I let out a sigh, reworking the words in my head. "He's using the machine to attack us from far away."
"WHAT?! You can do that?!" Kaminari put his hands in his hair, shaking his head. "That's crazy..." I pulled his hands back down, squeezing them with a sly grin on my face. "Don't worry, it'll be okay. I have the perfect plan now."
After explaining to him what he needed to do, I flew to the top of a low building that was hidden from the view of a large yellow crane that stuck out against the skyline. The sky began to cloud over, becoming misty and grey at my command. Fat drops of rain fell from the heavy clouds, soon soaking the entire area in water. After making sure that the system was here to stay for a while, I flew back down, flying through the streets in search of Kaminari.
Finally, I found him halfway to the crane, running as fast as he could. "Kaminari! Grab on!" I held out my hands and he grabbed on while I continued to fly forward. We continued through the alleyways to avoid being seen by Principal Nezu, but that meant I had to fly faster to make up for lost time. "Oi! Watch out!" Kaminari barely dodged the corner that I had turned, but I couldn't slow down; time was almost out.
I landed at the base of the crane, Kaminari more than happy to be back on the ground. "You know what you have to do?" He nodded, a surprisingly confident smirk on his face. "Don't worry Miku, this is something that I can take care of no problem. But, are you sure that you want me to go all out? I'll be less than useless once I use up all my voltage."
"That's fine... Once we distract him with this, I should have the advantage in the air. Now, let's do this! We're both gonna go to that summer camp, right?!" I held out my fist and Kaminari cheerfully bumped me back. After a quick nod to one another, we took off. I stayed hidden back in the hazy sky while keeping my eyes on the principal. He casually sipped his tea, scanning the area for any signs of us. He set down his tea only to grab the joystick on the machine and began swinging the crane around. I barely dodged the flying metal, the breeze ruffling my wet hair.
He stared right at where I was hiding, but, luckily, went back to sipping his tea and staring at the buildings. I noticed the air become slightly buzzed with electricity, tickling my body with the sheer power of it all. A flash of yellow was a few moments before the rabid crackle of lighting, zipping across the crane. The raindrops conducted the current into the air and clouds, making the entire situation even more chaotic.
I could see the principal still inside the machine. Tendrils of light sparked, flying out toward him like claws. Reacting on instinct, I flew in at top speed, grabbing my principal before the lighting could hit him. It reached for my back, but I sent a layer of dry air to protect us. The electricity frizzled out, Principal Nezu safe in my arms. "Why, thank you for saving me!" He smiled up at me, his teacup still in hand. Before I could respond, I quickly shackled his hands, then gave him a bright grin. "Of course, sir!"
The buzzer rang out, signalling out success. I flew back down to where Kaminari was and set Principal Nezu down. "Yay~" Kaminari had his iconic thumbs-up pose flashing toward me. I couldn't help but burst out laughing, hugging him tightly. "We did it! We really did it Kaminari!"
"YAY~"
By the time we got back, almost all the fights had been completed; the last one to go was Bakugo and Midoriya against All Might himself. I walked into the control room to see Iida, Yaoyorozu, Ochako-chan, and Tsu-chan all standing behind Recovery Girl to watch the fight. They turned at my footsteps, all smiling and clapping when I came in. "Congrats Chiho-chan!" Ochako-chan tackled me with a hug, almost causing me to fall over.
"Thanks Ochako-chan! I'm sorry that I wasn't able to watch everyone else's fights..." I pouted a little and crossed my arms. "Don't worry, everyone here passed!" Yaoyorozu assured with a bright smile, a bit of happy blush doting her cheeks. "Not surprised in the least!" The fight began shortly after, but I couldn't really pay full attention; my thoughts were occupied by Kirishima. After about halfway through the battle, I had a pretty good idea of how the rest was going to play out. Bakugo and Midoriya would be fine. I tapped on Tsu-chan's shoulder, not wanting to distract Ochako-chan from watching Midoriya. "Hey, if I'm not back by the end, text me how it ends, okay?"
"Of course. But where are you going, Chiho-chan? Off to check on Kirishima I assume?" I blushed at her straightforward response, my brain stumbling over what to do next. "I'll be taking me leave now... Thanks Tsu-chan!"
After gently closing the door, I began to wander down the halls, unsure of where to really go. I hadn't asked anyone if he had passed or not; in reality, I was terrified to know the answer. After a few more minutes of walking, I saw a door opened slightly, as though someone thought that they had closed it but got caught up in something else quickly. As I got closer, I heard the faint sounds of rickety breathing, choppy like sobs. Small hiccups were followed by suppressed cracks in their voice. The sound of crying. Someone was crying behind the door and I knew exactly who too.
Silently, I pushed the door open and closed it completely. He had his face down, his back to the door. His phone sat close on a nearby table, but remained untouched. A couple bandages were tied around his body in random places, but nothing seemed serious. "Kirishima?" He whipped around at the sound of my voice, my heart breaking when I saw his face. He furiously wiped his tear-streaked face, feigning a weak smile. "Chi! When'd you get here? Sorry I didn't watch your fight, I'm sure that you did great though-"
I ran up to him, hugging him as hard as I could. I rested my hands on his back, rubbing circles with my palm. He paused for a moment, stiff and rigid, but he began to loosen. His head came down to my shoulder and he let me support a lot of his weight. I could feel his chest begin to shake again and I knew the tears weren't far away. "Kiri..."
"We were beaten by a landslide, Chi... I felt so powerless! I was everything that I fought so hard not to be!" Kirishima grabbed my small body, his voice beginning to fail him. "Why... Why does it have to be like this?!" he cried, no longer trying to hide his tears. I let him cry into me for a while, unable to do much more than give him this. "I'm sorry... This isn't manly of me at all. I should be congratulating you, not moping over myself."
I put a finger against his lips while shaking my head. "Don't apologize. Listen to me Eijiro, I'm here for you whenever you need me for anything that you might need me for. I don't care what it is, I'll be here for you." I gently touched the small scar over his eye, making him smile softly. "I don't know what I'd do without you..." Kirishima placed his lips on my forehead, taking his time with this kiss. It was sweet and warm and it made me feel fuzzy on the inside, like I was the one being comforted rather than him; his immense amount of kindness never ceased to amaze me.
"See! What'd I say?! I told you so!" The door flew open, interrupted our moment together. Bakugo, Sero, and Kaminari stood in the doorway, staring at us. "So it is true... They really are a couple." We didn't bother to move apart, both of us too tired emotionally and physically to really care about what they had to say. "Oi! Shitty-hair! Why didn't we know about this sooner?!" Bakugo walked up to us, but Kirishima just shrugged, pulling me back into another hug. "There wasn't really a need to announce it,"
"Still! At least tell us!" Kaminari began to move toward him, but Bakugo held out an arm to stop him. "Shut it, Dunce Face." Sero brought his hands together with an apologetic smile. "Sorry for interrupting, guys. We'll talk about this later."
"We were interrupting something?" Kaminari looked at Sero who had just excused them while Bakugo dragged him by the collar out of the room. "Yes, you idiot." Bakugo growled, Kaminari completely lost. "WAIT WERE THEY ABOUT TO HAVE-"
"NO! SHUT THE FUCK UP!"
Sero quickly closed the door again and led the two blondes away. Kirishima sighed, cuddling with me. "If Bakugo's already back then we should be leaving soon... Jeez, I just wanted to spend some time with my Chi." I snuggled into his chest to hide my blushing cheeks. "My Chi?" I murmured, glancing up at him with a cheeky grin. He laughed, pushing my head back down. "Yeah, you heard me. My Chi."
