Chapter 41

"Calm down. They're going to love you." Bradley assured me as he rested his right hand on my thighs.

I shook my head. "You can't be too sure of that. I did call your company out for racism."

"And you have every right to do so," he replied. "What that woman did was unethical and she's the one paying for the consequences for the clients lost, not you."

I took a deep breath then released it. "Have you ever introduced your parents to a black woman as your girlfriend before?"

He glanced at me. "I've never introduced my parents to any woman." After a few seconds of silence, he continued. "I've also never dated a black woman before."

"Tsk, tsk...that doesn't make me feel any better. You said your parents are not racist and they probably aren't however, not everyone wants their child to be dating outside of their race."

"That might be true with some family but it isn't the same with mine. Do you remember what I told you about my aunt and uncle? My mother knew how much hurt it caused my uncle when their parents told him to leave because he brought back a woman from Africa. My mother would never do anything like that to hurt me. Neither would my father." Bradley chuckled, "He's the last one to judge anyone. His family side of the family is the definition of scandalous. My grandma has been married six times and divorced five. She has three different children with three different men, all the men are from different ethnicity. Her fifth husband was Nigerian but she divorced him because he was "too complicated." Her current husband is Indian and now she's complaining about sex," he frowned and shook his head. "She's definitely divorcing him before the year ends. My brothers and I have a bet too."

I laughed. "Okay. I get your point." My family isn't half as complicated as his. There were all black and they all married in their race or similar ethnicity. I looked at him seriously now, How do you know that this is not a passing fantasy. How do you know if you really like me?"

He glanced at me, "First and foremost. I don't like you. I love you. I think I've shown you this past week how much." He did. He barely left my side all week and he took every chance he got to tell me he loved me. Even Mia has started to like him and Mia doesn't like anyone.

He reached over and placed his right hand on my thigh and squeezed. "I love you and my family will love you too." He smiled. "We're here."

I turned my gaze and the first thing I noticed was the fancy iron gates. I was already impressed. When the gate automatically opened I glanced at Bradley. "How is that possible?"

He chuckled, "Remember Jacob, the pilot? His brother Jericho is the genius who created this security system. There is a camera that picks up license plates and when those that are registered on the system pass the camera, the gate automatically opens."

"Wow, impressive."

Bradley nodded. "Yes. It is."

As we drove slowly down the lane the big grey house started to reveal itself, or should I say mansion. It was beautiful.

"Wow." I looked at Bradley, "You grew up here?"

He nodded and chuckled, "Yes. I did."

"Maybe we should get married after all." I joked and Bradley laughed.

"We are getting married, no doubt about that." he parked the car about thirty feet from the entrance of the house and then turned to me with a smile. "Are you ready to get married?"

I chuckled. "You're so confident that they'll like me. Did you tell them to like me or else?"

He placed his hands on his chest, "Me? Never?" but his voice was laced with laughter.

I rolled my eyes at him. "Can we in now? I'm dying to see what the inside looks like." I reached for the passenger door and Bradley stopped me.

"No, wait. A gentleman never lets a woman open a door." I rolled my eyes and watched him exit his side of the car. It didn't take long for him to reach the passenger side. He opened the door and bowed. "My lady."

I rolled my eyes with a smile on my face. "Thank you, kind sir."

"You are most welcomed, my love."

I laughed and he grasped his hands into mine. We walked up to the double doors which surprisingly were already opened.

Bradley stopped to set his keys on a marble pedestal table by the door, and I took in the beauty of the house. The front foyer had a grey marble floor leading to a huge, curving staircase at the far end. A rich sweet scent permeated the air.

We walked down a hallway that lay to one side of the staircase. "I'll give you a tour after dinner." I nodded and continued to look around.

The furniture and art all seemed to blend seamlessly together. A woven rug, a vase filled with flowers, and large oil paintings provided spots of color that tied the room together.

I could feel my shoulders dropping and some knot in my stomach untying as I eased through the beautiful space.

"Finally, we were wondering when you were going to show up." My eyes drifted to the person who had spoken. She held a pleasant smile on her face. She looked to be in her late forties, early fifties, wasn't too certain because her dress was rather sexy for a woman in her age range. Her silky blonde hair was flowing down her shoulders and that made her look even younger.

"Mom, you look beautiful." Bradley released my hand and gave his mother a hug. When he pulled out of the hug he pulled her beside him. "Mom, this is Tiffany."

His mother looked at me with a smile still on her face. "Come give me a hug too, after all, you're going to be my daughter soon."

I hesitated for a second but moved ready to her open arms. She released me and smiled. "You're very beautiful and I can see why Bradley fell in love."

I smiled. "It's nice to meet you, Mrs. Mefford."

She shook her head and smiled, "Oh no, please call me, Norma. We're going to be family soon."

I smile at how welcoming she was. I was not expecting her to be this nice. I should have known Bradley would prep his family before the dinner. I didn't know he would tell me about the engagement especially since I hadn't given the final yes.

"You have an incredible home."

"Thank you. We bought it when I was pregnant with Bradley. We updated a few things over the years but mostly left it as it was. The main house is almost one hundred years old."

"It's truly beautiful."

"Come on, let's go join the others. Everyone is waiting for the bride and groom." Norma started to walk ahead of us and it gave me the opportunity to look at Bradley.

"You told them that we're getting married."

He nodded. "Of course, we are because my family will love you. The only person who will probably not like you too much is Ashton and he doesn't like anyone so it's okay. He won't give you any trouble, I promise he won't."

I took a deep breath. Lord help me.

We followed Norma until she turned to enter a room. Bradley didn't say anything, he just held my hand and we entered together. Everyone in the room stood to greet us. A man who looked like the older version of Bradley stepped closer to us.

"Tiffany. It's lovely to finally meet you. I guess I should apologize for my sons' stupid actions towards you but I won't because it seems as if while you two were away together you fell in love and there is no greater feeling in the world than love. Welcome to the family." he leaned forward and placed a kiss on both of my cheeks. "However I hope you forgive us for what happened at the office during your interview. I'm truly sorry, no one deserves to be treated terribly because of their race."

"Thank you, Mr. Mefford." I appreciated it.

He smiled. "Call me, Micheal, after all. My son is determined to marry you."

I glanced at Bradley who was smiling. "I guess he is."

"Hi, Tiffany. It's good to finally meet the woman who has been pulling Bradley's panties. I'm Luke. The handsome younger brother." Luke was as he described himself, handsome. He and Bradley shared similar features and it was obvious they were brothers but they didn't look too much alike. He stepped forward and held out his hands. I took his hand to shake but he grasped my hand and brought it to his lips.

I blushed and glanced at Bradley who was rolling his eyes.

"I'm Caleb. I'm the youngest and obviously the most handsome one." Caleb didn't step forward but he waved. He was indeed the most handsome of his brothers and it was probably because he had an angelic baby-looking face.

"I'm Ashton, most likely to be the best man." he stepped forward and shook my hand then took a step back. Ashton was just as handsome as his brothers but he had a hard look about him, he didn't even bother to smile at me. Thank god, Bradley mentioned him early because I would probably be offended if he hadn't told me how rude Ashton was.

"Great! You've been introduced to the Mefford Family. Now we can get to know the bride while we wait for the other guest to arrive."

"Others?" I asked.

Norma smiled, "Your family, of course."
