Chapter 34: Music*
A crash could be heard from the kitchen. Emilia sighed softly and sipped her tea without any regards of checking what it was "What was that? One of your Pokémon?" Crystal asked
"You didn't read up much of this part of the region, have you?" Emilia giggled and stood from the couch "the north side of Kannena is said to be haunted by the slaves and warriors who died in battle and on the job, punished or worked to death" she looked over at the spot where the crash was heard "It's not so bad... I mean, Olivia usually comes here to talk to them from time to time, but to children... how creepy" Crystal gulped, ignoring the voices in her head the entire time "anyway, this city is haunted by many, but they're harmless..." Emilia held her chin to think "now that I think of it... they're more active than usual..."
"What do you mean?"
"For the past few days, things keep flying all over the place around the garden, the house, and even around the city. The newcomers are stuck at home, afraid of the unusual, while the people who live here go about their day, really... but everyone is questioning why these spirits are active-" a vase flew pass Crystal's head, crashing into the wall. Crystal froze and sank into the couch "Crystal!"
"I-I'm fine..." she looked at Froslass showing her the Harmony Flute "I-I gotta do something first" almost forgetting about the angry spirits aiming to harm her, she rubbed her arms nervously and quickly took her medicine.
"Are you alright? You've gotten pale..." Emilia frowned, watching her shaking "You're alright! It didn't hurt you, see?"
"Y-Yeah..." Crystal got up, holding the flute tightly in her hands "I think I better look for West now... He might be panicking at the moment and shouting my name all over the place."
"A flute" Emilia put her hands together "You're still playing your flute after all these years? This isn't the one I remembered."
"O-oh..." Crystal looked at the colorful flute "No, it's actually been awhile. I lost the flute a long time ago when Wyatt and I were traveling to our new home" she took out her whistle "all I have left is the small mouthpiece. I use it to call my Articuno."
"So you do still play."
"All I do is blow on the piece. It's not considered playing" Emilia nodded and thought for a moment
"Does West... know about Wyatt?" Crystal turned away and headed to the door
"I told him about his supposed death, but I stopped before I could say anything that I might regret."
"Yes, telling him might give it away" the two faced each other in the garden "I'm sure I'll see you later on? Since your boyfriend is determined to become champion and all" Emilia giggled.
"E-Emilia!"
"It might be the story of mom and dad told all over again... he can be a gym leader alongside you since we're short-handed" they glanced away "kinda..."
"We can talk about this another time. I'm in a bit of a panic right now."
"Panic? Is it because of that vase? Don't be scared. They're harmless" Crystal quickly turned away
"Yes, I know, but not with me" she bowed to her big sister and quickly walked away to find any spot that won't have objects flying towards her and might want to kill her. She still has a lot to do before that happens.
"Crystal" she turned around to see Rhea waving to her with a basket full of food "you're out of bed already? It's like you being asleep for days never happened. How are you feeling?" She just stared at her walking over "What are you staring at?"
"Why the hell are you being nice to me?" Rhea sweat dropped "You didn't seem all that into me back in Hana Village."
"H-hey... I was nice, towards the end" Rhea pouted "look, I already understood what you were getting at about our families, so there's no real reason for me to hate you since this whole rivalry-"
"The rivalry you and your family thinks is real" Rhea glared, trying to get past her sass
"-has been around for so many years that our reasoning wasn't even on paper. How do we even know there was a rivalry in the first place? I'm not like that anymore... I promise" she blushed "so let's be friends."
"Even if I'm your family's biggest enemy?" Rhea looked down a little but kept eye contact
"Even so... it's wrong to judge you even if you did nothing wrong. I wronged you and said some pretty harsh things to all your sisters... without thinking. I let my anger get ahead of me and forgot that you guys are strangers and never did anything to us. The past is in the past, and I now know it should stay there" Crystal smiled a little, tilting her head sideways.
"The look in your eyes changed a little... You seem acceptable" she turned around "I'll let what you said slid and forgive your rude behavior since you apologized, but I'm not interested in making friends."
"Awe, come on! Why not?" Crystal smiled at her
"Because it's not going to matter later..." she looked at the sky "I'll be stuck at home again till the day I die"
"I can come to visit!" She sighed, looking down and reached to hold Rhea's hands "huh?" Rhea stared into her serious eyes "W-What's up?"
"No matter what happens to me, please make sure West will be okay" she slowly let go and walked away.
"Wait... what?" Rhea chased after her "Why are you saying this all of a sudden?" knowing not to question Crystal since she's wise enough to know what she's talking about, it'll be best just to stay quiet and understand later like before "well, anyways... How are you feeling? You're able to walk just fine."
"Yes, I'm fine... A little sore around the body, but that's because no one moved me in so long."
"Well we could have, it's just that... You kept kicking us" she looked at her confused "I think you were having a nightmare" a nightmare?
"I... don't recall."
"Really? Well, is this the worse time to tell you that West is at the hospital right now?" Crystal froze, wide-eyed "yeah, his nightmares got out of hand, and he couldn't stop screaming... He had to be sent to the hospital and put him to sleep for a few hours to relax each night" Crystal shakily covered her mouth
"You failed to tell me this until now? When did this happen?"
"Since you guys arrived. I was over there this morning. He wanted me to check on you since he found out you haven't been waking up, so I came by to your room and found you gone. The receptionist informed me that you left, so I came looking for you. Mom and dad said you were around here earlier."
"Your parents?" Rhea sighed
"Yeah, they already knew you were an Otashi. I had to tell them not to tell West for reasons. They understand, and I told them what I thought about the whole rivalry thing. Dad wasn't too happy to hear I don't hold a grudge anymore..."
"Yes, I know... Your dad is pretty intimidating."
"Wait, you've met my dad?" Crystal held her chin to think
"I have... back when I was still living in the hospital. He came by to talk to my dad about something. Not that I cared about it. Your dad ramble about random things I can't remember" she thought more of the moment "whatever he was talking about, I comment on something and got him all mad more than he already was"
"What?" Rhea choked in laughter "seriously? That's so funny. Which hospital did you live in?" Crystal looked around, stopping and pointed to the building that wasn't that far from the two
"Zamia Hospital in the clover department" Rea blinked a few times "It's the best in the region, so that's why I stayed there even if it was nowhere near my home" Rhea thought of the old picture West always had in his old room of him and a girl in the same hospital. Now that she thought about it, Crystal looked a lot like that girl... They even wear the same annoyed faces.
"Hey, Crystal?" Crystal glanced at her "Do you think you've ever met West before? As kids?" She looked foward again, running her fingers on her flute to clean off some fingerprints "because West use to stay a few nights in this hospital in the same department before when he was a kid... and he has a picture with a girl that looks like you. So maybe..."
"I don't know what you're talking about" she walked forward, wanting to cover her ears from all the insane whispering in her ears "I never met West up until Hana village."
"Really?" Crystal sighed longingly and felt a cold chill
"War..."
"War..."
"War..."
"Fire!"
"Years..."
"War..." Crystal bit her lips and covered her ears while Rhea was talking about random things. The spirits kept bothering her with random words, either screaming close to her ear or echoing in a whisper in her head
"Why..?" Crystal took a deep breath and suddenly lost it. She held her chest in pain, turning blue "Why did we have to have this war..?"
"I-I'm sorry..." she gasped, desperate for them to release her "I wasn't involved, believe me..."
"Crystal?" Rhea wrapped her arm around Crystal's shoulders to control her "what's the matter?"
"Years... watching blood scatter... on a regular basis..." Crystal's eyes widened while imagine the horrific scene "seeing them burn..."
"We burned.." pressure leaned towards her ankles. Her eyes widened more, knowing whatever may happen was going to be bad. Before having a chance to react, something wrapped around her ankle and tugged hard enough to make her fall on her forearms and begun dragging her across the concrete ground
She screamed in terror and pain as her skin scraped from the cement scratching her body while nothing but the air was tugging on her leg. Screams shouted in her head and images kept popping up of others burning alive
"Let go!" She shouted. Froslass hurried to catch up to her as fast as it could and attacked whatever was dragging her. Finally coming to a stop, Crystal hurried to sit up and shakily look down at her legs and arms bloody all over.
"Oh my Arceus!" Rhea came running and took her shaky body while everyone was watching and staring in shock, pity, and terror "Come on! We got to get that taken care of!"
"No! I'm not going there!" Crystal shouted, "I'm not going back to that damn hospital!" She sobbed in her hands, pushing Rhea away. Before Rhea could comment, she stared past the scratches and noticed handprints all over her legs and ankles
"What's this..?" She went down to touch the marks, only to make Crystal cry out in pain and hold herself close "C-Crystal..." Crystal looked down on her legs and stroked the dark redness the angry spirits caused
"It's okay... It'll heal"
"You're not going to say anything about complete air dragging you across the sidewalk!?"
"I said it's okay" Crystal pushed herself up and looked at her scratched up arms "I'm fine, okay? Now that I'm awake, West should be able to leave that hospital. Get him out here, will you? Hospitals are filled with spirits wondering when they'll get a chance to live again" they're hurting him from his sleep she thought.
"I can't just make that decision-"
"Just do it" Crystal looked at her hands "I thought the Fiery orb was supposed to help him, but these spirits aren't making this any easier" she muttered to herself "make yourself useful for once and get him out of there" Rhea groaned at her rudeness, but couldn't stop looking at her shaking and pale face.
It wasn't hard to notice she was peaking at the corner of her eyes to see every area around her, and not because she was practically new to the city. Something is bothering her, and it actually might be the same reason why West avoids this place, or one of the reasons
"I'll see what I can do then" Rhea sighed and walked away, looking back at Crystal holding her pained body. It wasn't a good idea to just leave her there while bleeding like that, but she already knew Crystal was stubborn and hated hospitals, even if all they want to do is help her.
"I didn't think they were going to get aggressive..." Crystal sighed. Froslass frowned and leaned its body on her legs to cool the pain, making her twitch "how am I going to hide all this..? Emilia should have some medicine for this" she walked to the fountain all the way near the Kimana tower and shakily sat down, avoiding eyes staring at her legs leaking blood.
"I... should probably clean this, should I?" She heard footsteps coming towards her. A pair of running shoes walked up to her and released his Kingdra in the fountain.
"What are you trying to do? Make a scene?" Aaron asked, crossing his arms "clean that off, will you?" She nodded and turned around so Kingdra could use water gun to wash off the excessive blood dripping from her legs and onto her bare feet.
"Thanks" she sighed, turning back around and rub on the scratches. He sat next to her and groaned tiredly.
"Were you causing trouble again? What made you get those?"
"None of your concern."
"I was just asking, geez" he groaned annoyed "anyways, I just got here to Zamia. Surprise that you're here... Where's Westly?"
"In the hospital" he stood up in a flash.
"He's what!? You bitch! What did you do-" Froslass pushed him into the fountain "hey!"
"Stop making a scene. And you said I'm making one..." she sighed "he's there for his night terrors."
"Night terrors? But I thought they've stop-"
"Apparently not."
"Will you stop interrupting me-"
"No" she stood up and walked away. He climbed out, soaking wet.
"I'm not talking to you-!"
"Goodbye"
"Hey! Come back here!" He shouted above his lungs for no reason. He's so extra... He's a Kimana after all "will-!?" He cleared his throat "Can we at least battle?" His voice spoke a little more softly, remembering that she would brush him off if he acted a fool. She sighed and looked back at him.
"For once, you're not demanding a battle, but merely asking. That's quite something" she smirked. He blushed with a glare "since you already know my story, I might challenge you..." she looked around "at my gym if you manage to not annoy the crap out of me or even make it to my castle" she shrugged with her hands "and the thing is, I can't battle you now. If you haven't noticed before, I'm in no condition to do anything rash" he studied her face.
"Now that you mention it, you look pretty pale. Are you taking your medicine?" she smiled a little
"Awe, you actually care about me now?" He turned away, huffing
"Yeah right," she snorted and took the flute Froslass was holding again "so what are you doing out here by yourself then? Do you really not want to go to that hospital to see West? Even if you're not a patient?"
"Even so" she nodded and put the flute piece near her lip "he's going to be fine once I'm finished" slowly beginning to play, she swayed side to side with the melody of the music
Music had been a hard thing to achieve when in the castle. Someone would always be around her, and she didn't want to be heard or watched. Being out and about lately, she broke out of her shell a little and just knew that she cared about playing music more than having others watch her get really into the music, like Emilia with her violin
The soft melody caused her mind to calm her nerves and feel the presence of spirits sighing in relief and finally have their peace. Froslass frowned at all of them leave. Crystal stared at it watching them
The world around Crystal slowly started to fade away through the sound of her flute. It was a magnificent flute, well made and in perfect condition. The Warrior of Fire handmade this 3,000 years ago, and it simply looks new
The spirits finally left entirely from the city, but something tells her not every single spirit left... "the souls my warrior had taken are finally in peace, though you're still in danger" the princess's voice spoke.
Crystal opened her eyes and noticed aurora lights above the sky "Zamia was on the same spot where the war took place in. Those spirits are the ones Damian took. The spirits who will start to harm you by the temple are the souls the king had stolen... Go to the temple and put them to rest" what about..? "The souls I took are back home in the storm... I protected you from them before you left, now please hurry" Crystal nodded, put down her flute and looked forward to see her Articuno landing in front of her
"Articuno..."
"Uh..." Aaron looked in a daze before shaking his head and stared at the legendary in awe "Oh! Hey! It's a legendary! That's so cool! You've got to battle me now!"
"Huh? Why should I? Now that my legendary is here?" She didn't expect Articuno to come at all just because she played the flute "Forget it... the answer is no"
"That's a shame" someone walked over. A dirty blonde guy and brown eyes with a cocky smile approached them "How about battling someone worthy like me?" Aaron glared harder than he's ever had
"Uh... " Crystal sweatdropped, not caring whether they were worthy or not, she just doesn't want to battle "Who are you suppose to be?" Not that she cared
"Kyle..." Aaron said, looking like he was ready to murder
