Chapter 32: Picture*
"Thanks for coming so quickly, doc" West said while taking the elevator with Doctor Benjamin, who was also a priest and running the hidden Blue Feathered shrine like his brother, Father Thomas.
"I was told that this was an emergency and the Kimana family needed a doctor, not an ambulance... so I came as quickly as possible at the strict request."
"I'm sorry, but my friend is very important to me, and she has a condition. She's sensitive-"
"Please, son. Calm down. I will try my best to help your friend. I'll give you my word" West sniffled and nodded "You've grown so much, Westly. It's good to see you've come back after so long" they approached the door he left Crystal with Rhea and the maid
"Yeah..." he knocked on the door "Rhea! The doc's here! Let us in" Rhea opened the door and let them in. Bowing at his presence, she turned to show Crystal in bed completely dry and in different clothes, laying on the bed next to a dresser full of her medications. West didn't know she had to take that much!
"Thank you for coming so quickly, Father Benjamin" Crystal snapped her eyes open and looked in panic a little. West hurried to her side and took her hand.
"Don't worry, Chris. I won't let him take you to the hospital" she looked into his eyes, afraid and shaking "he's going to take good care of you. He's a priest at the Blue Feathered shrine, just like Father Thomas. They're brothers. Father Benjamin is also a doctor, so you'll be in good hands" she furrowed her brows, confusing him on why she looked so irritated.
Doctor Benjamin set down his things on the chair and approached Crystal in bed, reaching for her forehead with his cold hands. She moved his head to get him off her "Chris..." West frowned
"It's been awhile, young lady" Doctor Benjamin said, putting on his gloves "looks like your condition didn't go anywhere, did it?"
"What's it to you?" She glared "Wyatt had been taking good care of me, so don't you fucking start-!" he took out a thermometer and prepared to give it to her, but she slapped it out his hand "Don't touch me..."
"Crystal, what's going on? I told you he'll take care of you. Do you both know each other?"
"She used to be my patient back when she was a young girl. She was bed written and practically lived in Zalma hospital" West looked at her in shock
"You lived here in Zalma, Chris?" She turned away
"Basically, yes... but I wouldn't call it living" she glared at him "you said you were going to take care of me, West. I told you I hated hospitals, so why did you think bringing a doctor would make things better? It's the same!" She fainted after glaring for so long
"Chris!" Doctor Benjamin sighed and stood up to collect his things "Doc! Where are you going?"
"If I knew who the patient was, I wouldn't have come. She was the most difficult patient I have ever had... Zalma Hospital has the best people and always been the best hospital in the world, and even nobody there could help her with her condition" he picked up a medicine bottle to read "it was that young fellow who succeeded everyone, even if he was just a kid. We couldn't help her, and we couldn't find a cure. Even if he couldn't either, he could calm her symptoms and let her leave the hospital she lived in since she was around 10" Rhea frowned at west
"She's asleep now, can't you just check on her?" Rhea asked. He put his things down again and took out a stethoscope.
"If we're lucky, I can check her temperature, heartbeat, blood pressure, and listen to her breathing, but remembering the days she stayed in that hospital, she would immediately wake up once someone she didn't approve of touched her" West looked at his hand holding hers, watching her in a peaceful sleep "she's exhausted right now, but she seems fine when you hold her. Will you assist me?"
"O-oh..." West nodded "sure..." careful not to let the doctor touch her. He did everything himself in order to keep Crystal asleep. She didn't move besides breathing. Doctor Benjamin put his things away and sighed
"What is it, Father Benjamin?" Rhea asked
"Where is doctor Wyatt?" He asked out of nowhere. West stared at him surprised before looking down and explained as much as he needed to about Crystal's wishes.
Doctor Benjamin nodded and turned to leave "I see... well, if that is her wish, then there's no point in discarding it. Crystal had been a very picky patient, and I know she never wanted to live this way. This is her choice... as long as she planned on going home, that's all that matters" West frowned at Crystal breathing heavily "Westly... I'm sure I can count on you to take her home as soon as possible."
"I-I will... I'll protect her with my life" Rhea frowned at his words "she's very important to me... You can count on me" Doctor Benjamin smiled, nodding.
"How is your condition?" West flinched, looking down slowly
"N-nothing to worry about..."
"Why are you stuttering, son? Is there something you want to share?" West started sweating "You're not... having terrors again, are you?"
"N-no!" Rhea's eyes widened, knowing him sweating was a result of him lying "I haven't... I've been fine" he turned to look at Doublade behind him "honest..." Doctor Benjamin sighed
"It's okay, Westly... you don't have to lie to me" West shut his eyes, "but you have your reason to lie. If you ever need me, you know how to contact me" he bowed and left the room, leaving it silent
"West... You've been having terrors again?" West nodded, knowing he couldn't hide anything from Rhea "I thought Cresselia-"
"It's gotten worse... Cresselia can't do a thing. Really Rhea, I'll be fine" he looked at Crystal "I'm more concern about Crystal" he held her hand again "We've gone this long, and Team Victoria had to be in our way" he got Doublade to hand over the Fiery Orb "look what I got" Rhea gasped.
"You actually got it! That's fantastic! I was wondering why it was so hot in here when you walked in" West raised his eyebrows, amused "not like that!" She slapped his shoulder "The Fiery orb doesn't affect you, meaning who you are is true... You are the slave in the legends... and Crystal is the princess!" She looked at the orb "might want to put that way, it feels like a sauna in here" West gave it back to Doublade, wrapping the cloth around every inch of the glass. Rhea felt relief
"I'm glad you guys made it this far. I wondered if you two were still together."
"Why wouldn't we be?" She frowned
"You still haven't figured it out... I didn't think you were that much of an airhead" she giggled "It's good that you haven't, I guess... You seem to be having fun with Crystal. You've been taking care of her... That's good."
"What are you doing here in the tower?" Rhea stood up from her seat on the bed
"I came to release some stress before getting back to work again... I haven't gotten any work done at all, so batting here in the tower should relieve some stress" Rhea currently was a newspaper writer for all over Kannena. She travels for various reasons, whether it's to shop, battle or find juicy stories on things she finds.
Because she's a Kimana, her anger issues get in the way of a calm mind, and it's the same for everyone in the family. They all come to the tower to release stress, all except for West who only comes a couple of times a year.
"Right... I should have known" he sighed
"There doesn't seem much we can do. Father Benjamin didn't say anything, so all we can do is hope she will get better on her own. I'll get the staff to bring some food."
"Are you going to tell mom and dad I'm here?"
"What? Do you not want me to?" He looked away
"It's not that I have a problem with it, but they're just always so strict. They make us battle and battle without a break. That's what the Battle Tower is for and all, but it gets old quick. That's why I want to hurry up and become champion of the Pokémon league already... They don't have to go through what we have to."
"You know..." Rhea crossed her arms "in the end, you're going to reconsider if you care about Crystal. Your choices, your feelings, and your thoughts will change all depending on how you'll handle things and find out the truth" West glared and stood up.
"Seriously? You're doing this again? We did this back in Hana Village. You're just going to keep talking without explaining yourself?!" she looked away, pouting
"Trust me, I won't be the one explaining anything to you" she walked past him "Let me know when you need something. Are you going to stay here for the night, or are you going up to your old room?"
"I'll go up to my room later..." she nodded, frowned at him sitting back down near Crystal, and closed the door.
"Oh, West... It seems that your heart is only getting worse. I never seen you look down at Father Benjamin before, since he saved your life" she walked to the elevator and begun her battle against a trainer waiting for her.
West made sure everything was alright for him to leave Crystal on her own. Because they were in a suite, Dewgong was put into the large tub, Castform floated near the window in its raining form, Cleffa sat against Crystal's shoulder, and Froslass floated in the middle of the floor while watching tv.
"Alright... Everything should be good. Call me on the communicator if you need anything. You know how to use it, right?" Froslass waved to him, understanding, and kept watching tv. He glanced over at Castform staring outside "Castform."
"Ca..?" It looked at him confused
"Can't you change the weather?" Castform frowned and looked away. West sighed and leaned down to kiss Crystal's forehead "I'll see you tomorrow" closing the door behind him, he made his way to the very top of the tower where his childhood room was
It was filled with glow in the dark stars and painted a light blue to calm him during the night. Plushies were gently placed on his bed and storybooks filled the bookshelves.
Walking to the window, he found a business card with Doctor Benjamin's number on it. It was always there to have easy access to contact him and get him to come and help with the terrors he had as a kid.
His parents told him it was okay to call him, but he never did. He didn't think there was any possible way anything would help his terrors, so he stopped believing there was a cure a long time ago before Cresselia came along.
Walking around his old room, he glanced at the picture frames all over his walls of his family. A lot of memories were plastered on each photograph. Each one helped him rewind to the time when they were taken until his eyes stopped at the last picture he saw of himself as a child in a hospital gown with a annoyed looking girl with blue hair and eyes, crossing her arms while he smiled wide for the camera
"What is this..?" he didn't remember even having this picture on his wall. He stared at the expression the girl was making and even her appearance "that can't be..." the more he looks at her annoyed face with blushes on her cheeks, the more he realized it looked like...
"Westly?" Someone knocked on the door before walking in. A tall woman with green eyes and brown hair walked into the room a little confused before seeing West and smiled "oh! I knew you'd be here! I was informed you came back to the tower and I had to see you" she opened her arms to give him a big hug "welcome home" West smiled big and hugged her back.
"Thanks, mom... I'm home."
"Your father is busy battling with his last challenger, so he won't be here till later. He hasn't heard of your return, but he'll find out later" she played with his hair "Why haven't you come and see us more often?"
"I've been working a lot... I'm sure you heard I got a place of my own, but also... I'm traveling Kannena to fight against the gym leaders and already got 3" mom held her chin "later after my friend is fine again, I can go and challenge the gym leader here."
"Friend? You have a friend here in the tower?" He blushed
"Y-yeah... She's sick and now resting in one of the suites. Sorry I did that without permission, but she's important, and I promised to take care of her."
"Take care of her..?" She gasped and put her hands together "does my baby finally have a girlfriend?" He blushed even more
"M-mom!"
"Oh! I knew it! We've waited for this moment! You said she's sick? When we will we be able to meet her?" His parents are always pressuring him to find a wife so that he can take over the Battle tower in the future.
Unlike the league, the Battle tower accepts as many family members as possible to fill up the tower to allow more challengers to come and face them.
West was the main one to get pressured to get a girlfriend, almost like his sister... surprisingly, since she's a woman and father don't usually approve on their daughters dating anyone. The Kimanas are open with their feelings and don't look up to others
"I-I don't know... Her condition is really serious, and it takes a long while for her to recover" he looked down "If she doesn't get better soon, I'm going to have to take her back home sooner than later" his eyes watered "I've gone this long taking care of her... but I don't have the ability to do much like her doctor can. I'm scared that if I can't do anything now, taking her back home will result in me never seeing her again."
"West..?" Mom lifted his chin "Y-You're crying..?"
"Her condition is so bad that even Doctor Benjamin couldn't do anything. He knew her, he had her as a patient before... and he said only her own doctor could help her."
"Why is she not with her doctor then?" He let his tears pour down his face
"Because she wants freedom..." he turned to look at the picture "She looks like this girl right here, just older" Mom cupped her mouth a little
"This one?"
"Yeah, I don't remember this picture being here before I left"
"I don't think you really pay attention. When you were a boy, you refused to remove the picture even if your father yelled at you for it" his dad yelled at him for a picture?
"Do you know who she is?"
"It was a long time ago, but it was back when you were hospitalized for a few days when your terrors caused you to harm yourself" she stared at the girl "because you didn't want to be stuck in your room all day, you left and went to find the playroom. That's when you found this little girl wandering around. I don't know much about her, other than her being an Otashi" West froze "but we found you both in the playroom sleeping on the same mat. That was the first time you slept without your terrors, so we automatically thought you were okay to come home... but you weren't" West looked back at the picture of the pouting girl
"Oh... then this girl can't be who I thought she was. Crystal isn't an Otashi. She's a Hiyori" Mom blinked a few times "There's no way she can be an Otashi... I like her too much" Mom frowned and reached to hold him, but stared at the happiness he held on his face, keeping her from saying anything more
"They... probably just look alike then. It's possible" She said. He nodded happily and turned to sit on his bed. Mom stared at the picture a little longer, remembering finding her son at the same time the Otashi champions found their daughter in the same room, calling her by her name without listening to West's dad's rants about keeping his son away from her. So they found each other at the end... although... Hiyori is a very obvious name.
"I'll make sure she gets some nutrition in her diet then" mom smiled.
"Thanks, mom!" He smiled brightly
"You... like this girl, huh?" He blushed but nodded
"Yeah! She's very distant, but I like her a lot!" She smiled and kissed his forehead
"It's late already... We can meet for breakfast in the morning. How does that sound?"
"Awesome!" She blew him a kiss and closed the door behind her, seeing Rhea leaning on the wall
"Mom... I need you to listen to me..." Mom frowned, having the feeling this has to do with West and that Otashi girl...
