Chapter 2: Reunion*
Ai of Wyatt
"That was a magnificent battle, but you lacked the skills to defeat me and my Pokémon" Crystal flipped her long light blue hair and turned her bare shoulder, grabbing her heavy and warm gown to lift off the floor "I'll admit, you are strong. You worked hard on trying to beat me, but it looks like you made it worse for yourself" she glanced at her challenger standing in the opposite side of the battlefield "since you have lost, that means I won the bet" she opened her hand "give me your badges."
"No... Please! I worked so hard on getting them!" The challenger cried
"You shouldn't have bet on them then" she shook her head "What a disappointment... to think that your fire-type Pokémon would be strong enough to defeat my perfectly trained ice-type Pokémon. You have a lot of nerve. What a shame for such strength to be wasted on someone like you" Wyatt calmly walked to Crystal, handing over the case of badges he was given to settle the bet "it's not too late to collect them again. All you have to do is regain the badges you earned and maybe when you come back, you won't make another stupid bet."
"How can you be so cruel..?"
"You're blaming me now?"
"If the challenger loses, that's that," Wyatt said, "You said yourself that you would bet on your badges, all for the sake of proving yourself to be strong. Actions have consequences... it's best to learn from them. Now it's about time for you to leave... We will look forward to seeing you again" Crystal rolled her eyes, not liking the sound of that "once you collect your badges again, that is" the trainer tried his best to hold back his tears and ran out without another word. Wyatt looked back at Crystal climbing the stairs "It's sad he had to bet on something as precious as badges, but did you have to be so mean to him? He's just a kid."
"Kid or not, he made a stupid decision. It's like you said, actions have consequences. He has to learn from his mistakes. This world isn't going to feed him with a silver spoon" she continued up the stairs.
"I'm surprise you even agreed to battle him" he caught up to her and handed the badges "he only had three badges."
"My Pokémon needed the exercise" she gave the case back "put them at the same place where you stored that Rhea girl's badges. I have no use for them" she took back the badges suddenly, glancing at the glass of the case reminding her of the time she took Rhea's badges only a few weeks ago "on second thought" she threw the case in a nearby trash can "It all deserves to be in the trash. These badges meant nothing to them" she sharply turned to the corner and proceeded walking to her room
"Where do you think you're going?" Wyatt asked, taking the case out the trashcan
"A nap... Don't bother me."
"Of course. I'll let you take your nap once I give you this letter" she looked back at a letter placed finely on a small tray he was holding "Articuno brought this in this morning" she snatched it from the tray and looked through it with him "I see... so Lady and Sir champion request to speak with you via video chat" Crystal groaned.
"Seriously, do you really have to call them that?"
"Shall I call them by their first name? Gabriel and Gabriella?"
"You're an ass" he gave a close-eyed smile and walked away, obviously trying to hold his laughter.
Crystal's parents are proudly named Champions of the Kannena region. The blood named Otashi was Gabriel, the champion even before he married his wife, Gabriella. Because the family doesn't allow outsiders that aren't blood relatives of the Otashi family to be part of the league, they cannot be part of the league in business at all.
Long ago, a female trainer proved them wrong and became champion, but didn't want to take the title from her beloved, shaming him of his own family, and decided to be a tag duo in battles for anyone participating in the league... now all their children are one with the league and sworn to keep it a Symbol of Victory
Crystal was forced to be sworn to the league, though behind everyone's backs, she'd sometimes feel lazy and often wouldn't fight anyone, letting them proceed to Victory Road... if they're even strong enough to even go up against her aunt, the first elite member of flying type Pokémon.
The Pokémon league are invisible to everyone. The only ones who ever defeated the Otashi family in generations were high-class trainers, but even so, the battles were never easy, and the family knew how to reclaim their spots without blinking. Gabriella was the first in a long time to defeat the league but chose not to take the position, but to share it. The Otashi sisters admired her for her determination and all wish to be like her, to represent the family a lot more than the other generations could do
Crystal admired her from afar, liking how she didn't give up to defeat the family after the name became hers. She proved everyone wrong, but she didn't break the tradition of the family name staying in the hall of fame.
Crystal's sisters were inspired gym leaders and battled hard with pride. Usually knowing Crystal hated her position, they could count on her to keep the trainers away from the league when they weren't worthy.
If a gym leader fails, it's not all that big of a deal. The most dependable leader was in fact the middle child, Crystal. She doesn't pity anyone, likes to disappoint others, making it her passion, and breaks the rules of rejecting a trainer when knowing they are not worthy.
Her personality switches on whether or not she feels like battling. She can either deny the trainer, or give away her badge when she doesn't feel like putting a lot of effort into a battle that'll be too extreme to her liking, or health
"You sure you don't want to join me?" Crystal asked Wyatt stopping when given the offer. He slowly turned to look at her, giving her an unimpressed expression. The maids felt the tension and hurried towards them.
"Would you like a foot massage, madam?" One asked
"Huh..? Oh, no thanks. I'll be in my room then" Crystal jumped when feeling something lick her ankle. Lifting her dress, she saw her Glaceon standing under her dress, trying to act innocent "what are you doing in there?" She smiled, hiding her giggle from the maids and headed off to her room.
The snowstorm was gone, meaning Articuno lifted the barrier and nighttime was approaching soon. The corner of her eyes caught a glimpse of that kid who was in the castle earlier, running to the bridge to the town across the island the forest was made up from
"A kid that small has more freedom than I do" sighing, she picked up her naughty Glaceon and carried it back to her room. Articuno was outside the window, waiting to be let in. Quickly making the call to video chat her parents and wait for an answer, she rushed to open the window and to let it fly in, trying to ignore the cold air forcing itself in her room.
"Crystal? Honey? Are you okay?" Her mother spoke from the desktop. Finally closing the window with mild winds keeping her from shutting it, she rushed to her desk to see her mom and dad staring at her through the screen worriedly.
"I'm here" they finally sighed in relief.
"There's my little girl!" Mom whined " Why haven't you been calling your parents!? Don't you know how worried we are!? That legendary of yours doesn't travel all that much to deliver our letters, and you know Wyatt doesn't always deliver our messages!"
"Yes, I'm sorry for not contacting you. The storm always messes up connections. As you can see, I'm fine."
"Your cheeks are a little pink there. Have you been taking your medicine?"
"Yes. Articuno delivered the medicine you prepared for me. Thank you" mom held her cheek in awe
"Such a brave soldier. It pains me to know you won't let us take care of you instead."
"I understand, but you two are champions and have much more things to do than to worry about someone like me" even if she prevents others from entering the Pokémon league, the elite four and champions do a lot more things for the community, and will often offer help to rescue teams and work as the government officials when not bothered by trainers.
Making the league quiet like always, her parents do much more advanced things while her aunts and uncles take care of their own children or run the region sometimes
"What do you mean someone like you? You are our daughter!" Dad said "Don't think for a second that everything we've done for you was a waste of time. We love you... Wyatt is the only one capable of taking care of you. If it weren't for him, you'd still be in the hospital. We try our best to give you freedom, and what we give might not be enough, but don't think we don't care about how you feel medically and mentally. Your mom is just being emotional. She knows we can't take care of you like Wyatt can" Crystal looked down "we want you to come and see us, but knowing Wyatt, he doesn't think that'll be a good idea."
"Wyatt is a pushover. He's just protective and needs to learn how to deal with-"
"Deal with what?" Wyatt walked into the room without glancing at the screen "I've noticed your cheeks are still a little pink. Your fever is going down after the whole two weeks. We can't have you leaving the place anytime soon."
"Awe, come on Wyatt! Don't be like that!" Mom whined, "the both of you need to stop being in those shells and come to the reunion!"
"A reunion?" Crystal asked
"The entire Otashi family is coming together to the Pokémon league to celebrate the anniversary of how long the family had been keeping the league in its name! 700 years running" Dad said proudly
"That's a long time" Crystal leaned on her hand "that kind of sounds fun, when is it?"
"It won't be for a long while! There's also a party coming up in a few months. One of your cousins is having a birthday and only some of the family are going. Many of your relatives are dying to meet you! It would be nice if you can come!" Being the shut-in Crystal was, ever since she was a young girl, she practically lived in the hospital until she was able to leave and head straight to a new home to be by herself, and sadly it had to be with Wyatt.
Making the dream of going out on her own wasn't realistic, she stayed within those walls since day one. Not many people knew what she looked like, and her parents thought it'll be the best time to have everyone see her in person.
Wyatt was afraid of her exposure and health, so keeping her away from too many people in case of her sensitivity was the best thing for her in his opinion. He leaned on the desk to stare at the screen
"Crystal is not well enough to be there, Sir Gabriel. If you care about your daughter, you should understand that her condition is serious and she cannot leave until she is properly healed. Even so, I cannot leave her sight" Crystal frowned.
"But you can always come! You're part of the family!" Mom said
"No" he leaned away and turned his shoulder "I refuse... forgive me, madam, but I have no intention of doing anything else but to care for Crystal. If you wish to see her, you must come here."
"You know they can't leave the league that easily" Crystal said, "no one knows what I look like, so it's easier if I go."
"I know that, but you already know" she looked away "she will not be attending the reunion or party. I'm sorry, but we will be looking forward to your visit."
"But you won't even tell us where you live-!" Wyatt hung up and walked away. Crystal stared at the blank screen before glancing at him taking something from Articuno.
"And you said I'm the rude one" he snorted and walked away with a box in hand "what's that?"
"Nothing... I don't care if I come off rude. It's not like they can fire me anyways" he placed a tray of food on her desk.
Wyatt... it's so hard to understand him. It's understandable of what he was trying to prevent, but why is it getting to him so easily?
"What's your problem? I don't mind seeing everyone. I know that being around too many people can be bad for me, but they're family. They'd understand. Why can't you understand and come with me?" She tried her best to not yell
"Not going to happen, princess! Unless you find another caretaker who knows how to take care of you, you're not leaving my sight!" He raised his voice suddenly.
"Stop being selfish and come with me!" He didn't answer after that and walked out. Crystal huffed and contacted her parents again, but saw that there was no signal. He took it away...
"What's with him?" She looked up at Articuno "I never understood what that guy was feeling, but I knew him my whole life. I'd figure that be enough to help me know what's going on with him. I guess I'll never know. He doesn't like talking."
"Cuu" Articuno cooed. Crystal sighed with a smile and reached over for Glaceon pawing her knee for attention. The rest of her Pokémon came over for a greeting, making her smile a little more.
"It'll be nice if things could be different... I haven't seen my family in a long time. I don't blame Wyatt for it. I blame my condition" she held her warm cheeks "I get sick so easily... I can't risk leaving. I'd have to go back to the hospital again..." her eyes started stinging "then I'll definitely lose my chance in freedom" she hugged Glaceon "I haven't seen my sisters or parents in so long... I want to see them" Wyatt wasn't at all the reason for her staying. Even if it seemed that he's trying to prevent her from seeing anyone, it wasn't the case.
"Another dream down the drain... I'm sure I can see them someday. Until this fever goes away, there's no way I can leave" she walked back to the windows to gaze at the town's lights nearby "I wonder what that town looks like too... Wyatt would go with me, right?"
"Cast?" Castform frowned
"The last thing I want is for Wyatt to be with me all the time. I'm surprised I'm here alone. I'll get my way one day" she looked over at a large black cape with a wide hood rested on a hook behind the door "a short while is all I need... without him all on my neck, just to myself. That would be nice" someone softly knocked on the door. Knowing Wyatt doesn't knock, it had to be a maid.
"Come in" one of the maids walked in with a concerned look on her face "what is it?"
"I'm sorry to intrude this late at night, but the young trainer you battled earlier? His mother is here with him" Crystal stood up immediately, almost losing her balance before her Castform pushed her back on her feet.
"You've got to be kidding me... He got his mom involved?" She shook her head and walked pass the door "I'll handle this."
"Milady! Don't worry about it! We can take care of it! It's already so late!"
"You're the one that came to the room. Either way, I don't care. I'm not in the mood to have someone barge into my home uninvited. She's not here for a battle, I assume, so she's not welcomed" the entire castle had dimmed the lights for the evening, making it unable to have her visible to anyone downstairs. She held the bar connected to the staircase and spoke, looking down at the uninvited guests.
"What business do you have here, may I ask?" The woman and the kid looked around and stopped at her, trying to make out her face
"Are you the person who took away my little boy's badges?" Crystal narrowed her eyes towards the boy hiding behind her leg
"I am the gym leader of this castle... I don't know what you are assuming, but I did not take your child's toys."
"Toys?! He earned those! What right do you have to take them away!?"
"You're right, I don't have a right, but I never took them away. It was your son who bet on them."
"What..?"
"He was trying to fool you. He got you to come here to get you to convince me to give back something he practically gave away. He had so much nerve, to think the type advantage mattered that much. He doesn't deserve something as valuable as gym badges if he's only going to throw them away just like that. It wasn't hard to beat him, so that's how we're here now. I'm not giving back the badges. Understand?"
"What's the matter? Think you're going to lose? You witch!" The kid shouted. Crystal kept her cool, but only by a bit.
"I am a gym leader. I fight when I want to, and I never give away my badges out of pity. I admit, I sometimes give away my badges, but what you claimed that you could beat me because your whole team was made up of fire-types is simply sad. Your pride was too great, even for a boy like you. I have witnesses, so don't think I'm going to kneel down to you because you brought your mother here! You're not getting them back! That's all I have to say! Leave my castle. You're unwelcomed and now banned! Don't even try to come back!"
"Wait! Please!" The mother reached out
"Leave my home at once! You had your chance! I gave you the option of earning your badges again with my sisters, but thinking you had power over me? Who do you think you are?" Crystal glared "leave, leave now, and don't ever come back" she turned to walk away
Wyatt's figure appeared when his Chandelure floated down from the ceiling and floated above him with bright purple lights, with his Litwick on his head.
The small family nearly jumped in horror when seeing him standing there beside them "as milady says, you must leave"
"Please understand! My boy, he says the wrong things! He worked hard! Give him another chance!"
"That's beyond my power. I cannot" the kid stepped up.
"The Otashi family thinks they're so great, don't they?" Wyatt stood there blankly "you guys think you have so much power that you think you can do whatever you want with it! Huh?!"
"Jeramy! What's the matter with you!?" The mom gasped. Wyatt closed his eyes slowly, taking in the silence. The tension was building slowly.
"Of course, you don't understand... There's no difference about what you said now and to the lady of the house... you have no right to insult her. You had your chance in getting your badges returned. The Otashi family has nothing to do with keeping your big mouth shut" his voice raised, though face so calm. He reopened his eyes, deadly staring at the kid shaking in fear "you have no right to disrespect such a powerful family. I will inform the league to keep you away from ever rechallenging them. Leave before I lose my temper" he glared in a different and deeper voice with his eyes slightly glowing with his Pokémon behind him.
The mom bowed and ran out with her kid, silent. Having the maids shut the door, they looked at Wyatt leaning on his knees out of breath
"Wyatt, sir..."
"I'm fine" Litwick and Chandelure frowned, confused "I'm just fine..." he walked away exhausted
This is only the second chapter and has you wondering what kind of person Wyatt is huh? I really enjoyed writing this story, I hope you can continue on... a lot on
