Memories

He lowered his hand trying to recompose himself.

"T-Terrence. My name's Terrence," he finally managed to stutter.

The man smiled, "You know, I've always thought that if I  were to have a son, I'd call him Terrence."

Maybeck felt a tightening in his chest and an ever so rare tear tug at his eye as he remembered why he goes by last name. Terrence was his father's name. He hadn't added jr. to his name in years because he found it leading to the topic he always avoided. His family. He went by Maybeck because Terrence or Terry always made him think more of his dad than himself.

Could this man really be his grandfather? He shook the thought from his head. It's just a coincidence he said to himself over and over, only to realize he still hadn't responded to the man before him.

Maybeck laughed in a way he hoped wasn't nervous and turned to the thing he'd been using for years, his trademark. His confidence and sarcasm.

"Terrence is quite the name, wouldn't you say?" he said trying to sound casual and not like how he felt. He tried to hide a shake that was nearly impossible to stop.

"Well, you'd say so for sure! It is your name after all!" the two laughed.

"It was, ah, my dads name too..."Maybeck tried to keep the tear that was jerking from his eyes from falling, though that task proved harder than he expected. Last time he'd talked to anyone about his family had been years, although he thought about them each day.

At that moment Charlene ran up to Maybeck, seeing a possible opportunity to talk to him while there wasn't anyone around. She hadn't yet seen the man standing before them as she talked excitedly,"oh may-" but before she could finish his name, he cut her off. Not sure what to do he gave her an unexpected hug that silenced her from surprise. That's when she felt him shake and saw the tear pooling in his eye, she knew something was off. As he unwrapped his arms from her she noticed Jeremiah for the first time.

"What a lovely girl, what might your name be?" he asked her.

Not sure of the situation she responded as safely as she knew how,"Charlene."

The man nodded and spoke, a smile never leaving his face,"Jeremiah. Jeremiah Maybeck."

Her eyes swelled with surprise as she looked back over to Maybeck for conformation of what she'd just heard. He nodded his head.
