The Lonely Assasins
The Doctor's expression hardened as he pointed a stiff finger at the TARDIS and demanded once again, "Get.In.NOW." The only response he was given was a gentle shake of Willa and Philby's heads. The Doctor's eyes visibly shifted every other second between the kids and the statues. A gentle hand fell on his shoulder and without looking behind him he recognized it as Rose. She spoke, "Doctor, you know they aren't going to listen you, so why don't we skip this and investigate already?" She spoke softly and smoothly trying more than anything to calm him, she recognized the look on his face and it was good, as well as she recognized the look on the kids faces, one she herself had bore many a time when insisting The Doctor let her investigate when he claimed too dangerous.
The Doctor's jaw clenched as he slowly lowered his hand and adjusted his full focus on the gracefully creature before them, worrying he wouldn't be able to send these kids home safe. A voice piped up, "What do we do?" Charlene asked, as she and a few of her fellow keepers were at a loss as to what was happening. Without missing a beat Willa and Philby answered in unison, "Don't blink. Don't even blink. Blink and you're dead. They're fast. Faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink!"
His face easing some he faced the two kids once more, "Are you quoting something i haven't even said yet? It sounds like it.." Maybeck was impressed, he didn't think the fear or nerves in his friends faces could grow anymore but it had with that question and as they mumbled that they indeed were quoting his future self. Everyone stared at the statues now, although Rose, Finn, Charlene, and Maybeck all lacked knowledge of why.
"What are they, Doctor?" Rose asked with a nervousness she gained from the look on her partner.
"Well," he gestured in response to her at the two kids who seem to know everything for them to impress him once more. They started talking at the same time and no one understood them so they tried again, Willa talking first.
"The Weeping Angels, also known as the Lonely Assassins are one of the oldest species in the universe. As long as we are looking at them, we are safe."
Philby picked up where she stopped,"They turn to stone when any living creature looks at them, including themselves, hence looking like they are crying, they have to cover their eyes as to not look at each other. Now, if you aren't looking at them they come alive, ans a single touch zapps you back in time."
Rose joined in, "No wonder it's the LONELY assassins, that sounds terrible, never getting to even look at one of your kind..." she seemed concerned and wanted to help them but could see in The Doctor's face they were something he'd seen before and they were, in any circumstance, an enemy.
Maybeck started to walk forward, closing the distance between himself and the alien creature which he had trouble seeing as anything but a beautifully carved piece of art. He felt a strong hand stop him as it pulled him back by the shirt, "What'd'ya think you're doing!!! That's far more dangerous than you know," The Doctor was trying to explain worriedly.
"Then let me find out. I'm a hands on learner," the boy quipped as he pulled himself away.
Alas, The Doctor had his eye on Maybeck, Maybeck The Doctor, Rose, Finn, and Charlene on the scene between the two, and after minutes of not blinking Willa and Philby's eyes couldn't stand another second.
The Angel was behind Maybeck, it's hand grazing his shirt by the time Willa opened her eyes back up and stopped it. She let out a terrified scream. Philby put a comforting arm on her and Charlene raced to Maybeck wrapping herself around him, something she'd been wanting to do since the whole space adventure started, now that he was almost taken by aliens she couldn't stop herself.
"What. Is. HappENING." Finn half shouted feeling overwhelmed. No one dared take their eyes off the statue as The Doctor spoke, his hand reaching for that of Rose, "The Angels aren't supposed to here, not this planet not this time. We need to figure out why and how they're here. Who's in?
There was a silence until Rose, Willa, and Philby kicked off the mumbles of agreement.
"In that case," a broad grin shined over the Doctor's face brightening the whole world and mood of everyone around him as he pushed worry and dread to the back of his head, "ALLONS-Y!"
