Chapter 19: Mountains

After Webby fell asleep with her head on her lap, Mai stared out to the moon. She wasn't that tired thanks to the thoughts buzzing inside her head. Thinking of ways to save Max, Jonathan, Xion, and Roxas, as well as Aqua, Gemma, Terra, Ven, and Lena. She also thought of Xehanort. She hated him, but she remembered what her Grandmother Nagome taught her; forgive.

She sighed and looked to the moon. She hated him with a passion but she couldn't help but think, he was still a human. He was still a keyblade wielder like her and Sora, despite the things he has done to her family and friends.

And she also thought about herself. If she doesn't forgive him, herself would be a prisoner. She sighed and picked up Webigal, carefully bringing her to their tent.

She came back out and smiled, looking up at the bluff. It was nearly dawn as they almost stayed up all night- Webigal anyway. Mai had other plans.

At the top of the bluff, she looked down at the water and was excited about her next jump. She was about to, when a set of arms wrapped around her. The redhead gasped and turned to slap whoever it was. Then, she realized who it was.

"Sora?" She asked, however he looked different. He looked as if he was a heartless and she was worried sick about him.

Those completely yellow eyes looked up at her, seemingly loving and caring. He purred like kitten, nuzzling her arm. She couldn't help but smile and kiss his cheek. "Sora, you little rascal..."

Sora jumped up into her arms, licking her neck. Mai giggled, "Sora, that tickles- hey, OW!!"

He bit her neck and she dropped him off the bluff, holding her neck. It took her a minute to realize her hand was wet. She pulled her hand away and saw her hand was red from blood. She sighed and casted cure.

"Sora, you know know you don't bite like that!" She said, thinking he was there. "Sora?" She looked around and heard splashing down below, which sounded continuous like a doggy paddle.

She looked down and gasped when she saw Sora swimming like a dog or however a cat would, whining and looking for her.

"Sora!" He looked up at her, eyes turning a bit blue with sadness. Even little tears showed to her, "Sora, I'm sorry I threw you into the water! I'm really sorry, pumpkin! Hold on!" She dive into the water without making a splash. She came up and looked around, "Sora?"

Arms wrapped around her arm as she heard whimpering. She turned her head to it and saw Sora nuzzling her arm as to say he was sorry too. He sniffed her neck, wondering if it was okay. Mai giggled.

"Sora, it's okay, I used cure on myself." She sheepishly smiled and kissed his forehead. Sora closed his eyes and laid his head down on her chest. Tears fell from his eyes, which made Mai frown, "Sora... Well, I'm sorry too..." He shook his head and looked her in the eye, his own turning to normal.

"Mai..." He said and the darknesses returned to his heart, "I didn't mean to bite you that hard." She hugged him, relieved he was okay and not a heartless.

"You're okay... I was worried about you..." She sneaked a kiss on his cheek and he blushed.

"Were you worried about the form I was in?" Sora asked and she nodded. "That was my Anti-Form. I was training myself to use different forms like Valor... But I must have did something wrong..."

"Well, at least you're okay." She smiled and cupped his cheek. They heard a bird chirping somewhere far off and looked to see the sunrise. Sora smiled and put his head under her chin. She smiled and watched the sunrise with him.

"I came to tell you that we're heading to the village in the mountains possibly tomorrow." Sora informed, "I would you meet us up there?"

"Oh, sure!" Mai smiled and kissed him deeply. She giggled and left a blushing Sora in the water. He was sad that she left him in the water and that he was going to be separated from her until tomorrow. He put a map, a compass, and a note that said:

Mai,

Hope you have safe travels and love you so much

~Sora

Later that day...

Mai and Webby were getting ready to head out as their tent was put away. And they were in the attires, which were clean now thanks to Mai. "Everything good to go?" Mai asked her duck friend.

"Yeah! This was so fun!" Webby smiled, "You said we're going to a mountain village?"

"Mhm. We gotta stop in the next town and replenish our supply of curatives and warmer clothes." Mai told her and they continued to hike toward the mountains.

The next town was lively and most of the children were happily playing in the streets without a care. Of course most of the people walked around so they had no need to worry about being a speed bump in the road.

"Wow, this place is cowarded." Mai said, holding Webb's hand. "Webigal, stay close to me."

"Okay..." Webby looked around and a lot of people gave them weird looks, like the were aliens. It made both of the girls uncomfortable.

"So... Uh, where's the store?" Webby asked and Mai shrugged. She saw a sign telling them about the town. It explained they had store, a spa, restaurants, and other attractions. "Oh, can we get some ice cream! They have an ice cream parlor!"

"Yeah, if we have leftover munny." Mai said and her gut grumbled loudly. "Um, let's get something to eat after we get curatives and warmer clothes for mountain climbing, okay?"

"Yeah, I'm going to eat a hamburger!" Webby grinned and Mai giggled at her enthusiasm. A stranger bumped into her.

"Oh, I'm so sorry, sir!" She apologized.

"You need to watch it, miss priss." He growled, "You should really keep it to were you and your ducky girl stay out of my way."

Mai frowned, picking up Webby in case, "I'm sorry, I don't know this place at all and we've been traveling around. Where is the store?"

"Oh, it's down that way." He pointed in the direction they needed to go. "Can't miss it... Oh, and don't hit your head on the door frame, red."

Mai growled and ignored his rude comment, "Thanks for pointing us in the right direction-"

"Wait, perhaps you like to come to the spa. I can even give a free sample of the shitsu messages." Mai sensed this guy was trying to be a pervert and she continued to walk to the store. He stood in front of her. "Hey, I'm talking to you."

"Yeah, and I'm ignoring you..." Mai huffed and walked passed him.

"Oh and it's pronounced 'shiatsu'!" Webby called and he growled.

"Don't tell me what I know, Ducky Lucky!" He walked away, scoffing quietly. Mai's eye twitched and darkness surrounded her. Webby hugged Mai's head.

"It's okay, Mai. People who are mean say that to me..."

"It's still not right..." Mai's darkness disappeared and she looked up at Webby worried for her.

"I'm serious, don't worry about it!" Webby said and Mai pouted but they continued onward.

They walked around the town and bought clothes for cold weather as well as potions and ethers in case needed. After they ate and finished their ice cream, it was time to move on.

In the woods just northeast of the town, it was very foggy and mysterious. Mai followed the direction of the compass and talked with Webby, making land marks in case they got lost. As foggy as it was, they could at least see each other but they did hear a heartless crying or even hissing. Mai was high on guard and was very nervous.

"Webby, stay very close to me..." Mai said and held her hand, summoning her keyblade in the other hand.

Those hisses came closer from behind them, closing the distance between the two of them and the heartless. Mai sensed them and casted her light to them, blinding herself and the heartless. The fog cleared a bit and Webby saw them. She casted a strong blizzaga and it knocked them out.

Mai rubbed her eyes and groaned, "Ugh, that was a stupid idea... Webby?"

"Yeah?"

"Note, don't use your light during fog." Mai still couldn't see and Webby sighed.

"I'll lead the way." She took the compass and map. "Just follow the sound of my voice."

"So like echolocation... Okay..." Mai nervously gulped, "Please don't get distracted, you're playing an important role."
