↳ CHAPTER TWO
OLYMPIA COULDN'T QUITE believe how her life had flipped upside down with the arrival of one person — and she was yet to get to the juicy parts — but there was no denying that she was feeling almost relieved about having something to do. When it came to Jane, Erik and even Darcy, all three of them had a mutual passion and they excelled it in, whereas Olympia had always been the odd one out.
Sometimes, it felt like being a burden to them — she wasn't sure where she was from, who her biological family was or what had happened to her, but she had stumbled into their usual diner with no memory of how she had ended up there or why, and they had taken her in. Maybe it was out of a courtesy that had turned into an extended stay and now it was too late to kick her out; maybe they really did see her as part of the dysfunctional family, but either way, Olympia had struggled to fit in. She had already demanded so much of them, complaining about their interest in physics didn't really seem fair, so most of the time, she kept her snappy retorts to a minimum.
Now, though, as they sat in the very same diner that the blonde had wandered into once upon a time, and she eyed Thor who devoured yet another plateful of Pop-Tarts, she felt good. It felt right. Whoever this man was, she wanted to help him get home and solve whatever problem he seemed to be carrying on his shoulders — otherwise, he probably wouldn't have stuck with them for so long. This could be her thing, and the thought of that made her smile as she trailed a look over to a profoundly impressed Darcy.
"How can you eat a boxful of Pop-Tarts and still be so hungry?" the brunette spoke in amazement, raising her eyebrows at Thor who completely ignored the question, including Jane's one about him showing up in the midst of a horribly violent storm. Olympia doubted that his intention was to purposefully annoy them, but there was an enigma about him, which evidently frustrated Jane who repeated herself more than once. Darcy, on the other hand, was nothing but intrigued as she watched Thor make a gruesome mess of jam and frosting on the plate, possibly still seeking an answer to her own conundrum.
The man dodged all questions about himself, sure, but when Olympia raised her phone and placed the camera in front of Thor, simply stating, "Smile, I need proof of this", he broke into an adorable grin that made her mirror the joyous expression. There was something truly puzzling about him, how he seemed to have been through a lot yet he managed to radiate such pure innocence and happiness, and that was something Olympia could respect. She, herself, tried to be an optimistic person too but she had to admit that sometimes, her bitter intellect got the best of her.
Once the perfect picture had been taken, Olympia leaned back in her chair and worked on a snarky caption before sharing the shot online — a process in which Thor was dearly interested in, his keen gaze observing the ritual while his chin practically rested on the blonde's shoulder. Only when the woman put her phone away with a sigh and looked up at her friends, she found the two other women staring at her with that look they always had when researching yet another allegedly fascinating event on the skies.
"What? Is there something on my face?" She hastily raked her fingers through her bouncy curls before wiping her eyes and the corners of her mouth, in case the donut she had insisted on having had left behind some evidence. No answer came from the duo, however, so with a concerned look, she turned to Thor and presented the same question — his gaze, though, wasn't as much scrutinizing as it was adoring, causing Olympia's chest to tighten as he glowed up at her.
"Not at all, lady Olympia. You look very beautiful", he assured with a convincing nod, not a single shadow of a doubt coloring his devoted tone as his bottomless eyes swept across her features, taking in every last detail. With a suffocated scoff in the awkwardness of not knowing what to say to that, Olympia dropped her eyes to her lap where she wrung her hands, but before she could blurt out something inappropriate, Darcy, once again, came to her rescue — though she wasn't necessarily improving the situation, this time around.
"Why does he act like a freaking puppy with you? Look at him! He's adorable!" she proclaimed with disbelief, gesturing towards Thor, who was indeed quite close to the Amodei, his eyes glued on the young woman, his pink lips still upwards with no intentions to come down. Olympia opened her mouth but only an uncertain stutter came out, not any actual words as she fell short on an explanation; with one look, though, she was asking the same thing from Thor who suddenly pulled away with a clear of his throat.
"I believe I should speak of this to you, privately", the man formed a coherent sentence with his rough voice lowering even more and a serious expression etched onto his sharp features. The unexpected turn of the delightful atmosphere pumped Olympia's heart full of worry and wonder if this was the part where Thor revealed himself to be a serial killer targeting women with no clue what to do with their lives, but rather than voicing her thoughts, she took a deep breath and gestured at the front door.
More often than not, Erik loved to remind that her faith in people and the willingness to take risks out of nosiness and the need to help could end badly — one day, she would trust the wrong person, and she knew that it was a possibility. But even though she knew that Dr. Selvig was looking out for her, and even though she was well-aware that maybe, in her past, she had already taken the hand of someone unworthy of her trust, she was yet to be scared away and that was why she courageously stepped into the humid air behind Thor's towering frame, preparing herself for whatever was about to come.
With a swallow, Olympia glanced back at the diner, only to find Darcy and Jane staring through the window to catch a glimpse of the two, making her chuckle before facing Thor. Instead of looking back at her, however, the blonde was staring into the distance with a thoughtful look melting onto his face, his mind obviously going through all the different ways he could start the dramatic speech Olympia could feel building up. She could tell that he was a thinker, even if he didn't seem to cower away from action, there was something deeper within him and it shone through his eyes, especially when they met hers again.
"Where I come from... my father rules the realm we live in, and it is my birthright to eventually take his place. I recently discovered, from my dear brother Loki, that something very meaningful concerning my future was decided when I was born. And, it turns out, there is a—", Thor started out slow, stumbling on every word as if he stopped after each one to make sure he had pronounced it correctly, and the tension was pushing Olympia to her tiptoes as she followed the expressions on his face fade and switch.
But, before his enthralling voice could wrap her into its hypnotizing hold entirely, Darcy stormed out of the diner, both hands waving in the air and her interruption earning a silent curse from the blonde. Olympia forced herself to tear her gaze from the abyss of Thor's eyes, and when she noticed that in listening to the words flood from his lips, she had instinctively slid closer, she took a step back. Her entire face burning hot and not just from the sun, she faced Darcy who couldn't resist a grin despite the serious news she was arriving with — clearly, she, too, felt a little bad about breaking the electric moment apart.
"Erik called from HQ, some guys in suits are taking all of our stuff", Darcy explained breathlessly and gave a meaningful look to Thor, "including Myuh-Myuh." At the mention of the mysterious hammer he had wielded when he had shown up in front of their truck, Thor tensed, offering an apologetic look to Olympia who opened her mouth to say something. But, she understood that years of research was about to be lost along with the little belongings Thor had carried with him, so instead of arguing about what to do, she trekked over to the truck with her friends.
Jane wasted no time, but rather, as soon as she was seated behind the wheel she slammed her foot on the gas, and with a screech, the vehicle roared to life on the parking lot. "Woah, could you—", Olympia tried, grateful that she had strapped her seatbelt in, but when she received a mean glare from Jane, she pursed her lips together and cut her losses. She wasn't the one about to lose her life's work. Still, with a sympathetic touch, Thor placed a hand on her back to radiate comfort even if she didn't need it, but she appreciated the random acts of kindness and hoped that the warm smile she flashed at him was enough for him to know that.
As soon as the truck reached the front of the office, Jane made an abrupt stop, causing everyone in the vehicle to heave forward, but they showed a united front nonetheless as they all climbed out of the car with determination. Just like Darcy had said, there were men in suits all over the place, digging around and reaching every nook and cranny like some kind of bugs, nothing staying untouched as they unplugged their technology and scrapped all their files. Even the notes that Olympia had barely worked on were taken as if they were worth a thing. On the yard, several sleek, black pick-ups were parked and all of their research was carefully placed into the backs, indicating that they were going to inspect it all on their own and possibly take credit for all of it.
While Olympia wasn't intelligent on the same level as her version of a family, she was their best friend and watching everything they had built being picked apart didn't seem acceptable in any shape or form. That was why she put on her meanest face while watching Jane stomp over to the agents and try and take her things back, with very little success. Thor nearly leaped after her, but with a gentle hand on his chest, Olympia wordlessly advised him to stay back — he seemed hesitant, but somehow, he wound up relaxing at her fingertips and accepting the suggestion.
"Agent Phil Coulson", one of the men piped up with an unsolicited introduction, complete with a lavish flash of a badge before taking off his sunglasses and hanging them by the collar of his shirt. The confidence he was beaming with was enough for Olympia to forget her own advice, though, and with a bold strut, she approached him while grabbing one of the remaining notebooks and holding it up right at his face.
"Listen up, Suit and Tie. I don't care who you are, you can't just take away all of their stuff! This is years of work and research, they built most of this stuff with their own hands and you can't just grab this notebook here and—", she rambled away, fierce protection for her friends behind each menacing word she spat out, only to be proven wrong when one of Coulson's loyal agents snatched the small book from her hand and carelessly tossed it into the back of the car.
Successfully silenced, Olympia gave a shocked look at the man who didn't even bother to look back at her, before turning back to Coulson who had the audacity to grant his condolences with a hint of a smile. "If you built these, then I'm sure you can do it again", he pointed out, before glancing at Jane, "I'm sorry, Ms. Foster, but we're the good guys. This is necessary." With that, he walked away, leaving behind a very angry astrophysicist and her friends, all of them packed with glares as the several cars drove away with all of their most valuable possessions taken from them.
Hopeful that she wouldn't be blamed for giving up the last notebook, Olympia groaned into her palms while Erik began to explain to Darcy and Jane how they had just shown up. It wasn't until the lack of Thor's roaring voice registered that Olympia peeked from between her fingertips, merely to spot the man already traipsing towards an unknown destination. She took a wild guess — he wanted all of their stuff back, and the impulsive plan made Olympia's heart skip a beat as she erupted into a jog to catch up with Thor, her hands flying out as she reached for one of his unreasonably muscular arms with a definite grip.
"Hey, hey, hey! Where do you think you're going? And I believe we were in the middle of something back at the diner?" the woman reminded while fierily staring up at his eyes and knitting her eyebrows together unhappily.
Shaking his head, Thor gingerly unattached Olympia's slender fingers from his bicep. "Forgive me, lady Olympia, but I must go. They took something of mine", he fumed, attempting to keep his anger at bay as he avoided the Amodei's inspecting eye. But, when he made a move to continue his brisk walk across the road, she once again stopped him with a yell of his name and throwing out her arms in frustration.
"That weird hammer? So what — you're just going to walk there? You don't even know where they're going—", Olympia groaned, but once her thoughts had clicked together, she straightened her back and added, "I'm going to give you a ride", and turned on her heel after giving Thor a stern look to demand he stayed put. To be fair, she didn't know where they were going either, but if Thor was going to go on this risky adventure, she wasn't going to let him do it on his own. Whether he liked it or not, she had already made the decision to assist him, and right now, taking the truck to figure out Agent Coulson's location together seemed like a good start.
And, she could hopefully claim back the notebook she had accidentally given away, and find out more about Thor and whatever he had tried to reveal back at the diner.
Before Olympia could hop into the driver's seat, Erik appeared behind her, grabbing the keys from the ignition to stop her from leaving. Holding them up, he gave a disagreeing look at the woman, who instantly tried to jump high enough to snatch the keys back, but Dr. Selvig was unwilling to let one of his greatest friends leave with the potentially dangerous stranger on a wild goose chase.
"No, you're not going", he stated calmly, earning a huff from Olympia who crossed her arms grumpily. "Look, when I was younger, I was told stories about Norse gods — Loki, Thor, his hammer Mjölnir... Whoever this guy is, he's seriously messed up", Erik proceeded with a hushed tone, as if he was sharing classified information. His rant of magic, science and the differences between the two managed to take all the plucky arguments out of Olympia for a second, but as soon as Erik lowered his hand in the belief that he had been heard, the woman proved him wrong by reclaiming the keys when the opportunity arrived.
"All I heard was that he's an actual god, which would make a lot of sense because he's dreamy as hell. Bye!" Without hearing any protests, Olympia jumped in the truck and backed the car until she had reached Thor and could swing the door open for him. Satisfied to notice that none of her friends were running after her to stop her from going on this extreme road trip with the apparent God of Thunder, she grinned at the man and gestured for him to climb in.
"Come on, let's go save your pet hammer."
