↳ CHAPTER TEN
OLYMPIA WAS STUCK in a state of complete disbelief and difficulty to keep track of her own life as the days flicked by and she barely had time to register where one ended and another began. Ever since Thor had blown the Bifrost up, and therefore made it impossible for them to travel to any other realms until a new one would be made in its place, they had dived into the hectic heart of being future king and queen of Asgard — there was a lot that needed to be done, a lot that they hadn't even touched upon yet here she stood, each second bringing her closer to the most outrageously glamorous wedding she had ever heard even tales of. A wedding, in general, was not something she had had in her five-year-plan, but to marry the God of Thunder in a magic realm that she could call home, too, was, quite fittingly, out of this world.
Granted, it hadn't been all champagne and fancy dresses. There was no denying that witnessing Loki fall to his death had taken a toll on Thor, whilst finding out all those separate little details regarding her family had done the same for Olympia — the royal couple had hardly gotten the time to breathe in the past days, to take a moment for themselves, to talk and to grow. It was obvious that the wedding was more of a formality, whereas their relationship still needed time to blossom; and yet, Olympia had never been so sure of anything as she was when it came to saying yes to Thor.
Well, at least that part had been their own, beautiful moment — he had insisted on showing Olympia the world she had originally come from, and the two had escaped to the shore for a swim in the water colored with the hues of the galaxy and the millions of stars twinkling just for them. That alone had earned a place in Olympia's most valued memories, but hours later when they had rested in one another's arms on the grainy sand and looked up at the sky, he had, seriously this time, asked her to marry him. And although silence had ensued for a few seconds, their eyes locked in the dark, quiet night, she had settled for her answer way before.
They weren't perfect yet — there were firsts and seconds to have, there were some words yet to be spoken, there were all kinds of touches they hadn't gotten to share. But as had been prophesized, they were meant to be, and neither of them could turn their backs on that. Not that their stubborn personalities would have allowed it, anyway.
And so, there Olympia stood, the fading cuts and yellowing bruises concealed with a mixture of magic and make-up, her hair in intricate curls and a nervous smile twitching on her lips as she ogled at herself in the mirror and wrung her hands with one another. In any other case, it would have been typical of her to burst into a panicked rant while storming back and forth the room, but after all, she was moments away from being crowned by Thor's side, and she couldn't help but feel like such behavior wouldn't be proper for the future queen of the kingdom. Nonetheless, it was obvious in her posture how she hadn't really expected to find herself in a wedding gown any time soon, her palms sweaty and her teeth gnawing on her painted lips as she almost tried to find something to fixate on through the reflection staring back at her. It was hard to recognize the woman there, but she wasn't scared of getting to know her anymore.
"Relax, lady Olympia", Sif's voice echoed throughout her head, the words hitting her before she realized the warrior was standing next to her, her smile crooked through the mirror as she fixed a stray curl under Olympia's veil. "Everything is quite alright", she continued, having taken the role of a loyal friend in the short time they had known each other for, and therefore, the one of maid of honor, as well. There was no denying that getting married without Jane and Darcy by her side and Erik to walk her down the aisle felt strange, and not necessarily in a good way, but as soon as she saw the caring smile gracing Sif's lips, she was reminded of how lucky she was, either way.
"I know", Olympia forced out a breath as she turned from the brunette back to the mirror, struggling to get used to the large but comfortable white dress, adorned with red flowers dotting the hem — it had been a present from Frigga. "I just, uh, you know", the Amodei cleared her throat while tipping her head to the side to glance at earrings hanging from her ears, "I don't really know how to relax?"
Replying with the fondest of chuckles, Sif quirked an eyebrow but supposed that Olympia's worry was justified. Even though she was headstrong and determined, she wasn't one for judging, and that was precisely why she, alongside Thor, had helped Olympia with digging into her family's past. So far, it was a work in progress but there was hope.
"Well, perhaps you should consider that this is your very own decision. No one is forcing you, I presume. Therefore, this is your wedding. You are the person Thor, or the whole Asgard, really, has chosen and you have no reason to fret. It might be scary at first, but if you can wield Mjölnir and face Loki, I have nothing but faith that you can face the audience that already adores you. And Thor. I doubt he is able to even stay still anymore", Sif elaborated as she stepped to the nearby table, her voice calming yet stern as she tried to offer words of solace. Not surprisingly, they did earn a breath of relief. "Speaking of Thor...", the Goddess of War added once more, "he asked me to deliver this."
Turning from the mirror, Olympia found the woman standing there with a blue velvet box in hand, and once she snapped it open, the Amodei was nearly blinded by the shine of a golden necklace gaining power from the rays of sunlight sticking through the grand windows. The sight pulled an adoring sigh from Olympia, and without a word to prompt her, Sif was gently taking the necklace from the box before offering to lock it around the blonde's neck, her warm fingertips brushing away her hair as she did. "I know you would have preferred one of your Midgardian friends in the position I have taken, instead, but I wish to thank you for thinking of me", Sif spoke up again, her voice fiercely grateful albeit the tiniest bit shy with flattery, making Olympia smile as the necklace fell against her collarbone and her hand instinctively reached to touch the tiny gem hanging from the chain.
"Oh, don't even mention it. I do miss my friends but I'm more than happy to have you here. Thank you, for all your help and advice", she insisted, warmth reaching across her face as she gave Sif's shoulder a reassuring squeeze.
Laughing breathlessly, Sif made a small bow before gesturing towards the tall, heavy doors of the bedroom. "You are most definitely the ruler Asgard wants and needs, Olympia. Now, you look absolutely stunning and I have a feeling the groom is growing impatient, so, shall we?" she suggested with a grin, her arm extended for the Amodei to take, and unable to resist, the giddy bride wrapped her own around Sif's.
There was an almost eerie silence around the castle as she led Olympia towards the throne room, quietly instructing the blonde to keep breathing, and it seemed as if they were in the wrong place or at the wrong time. Yet when they stepped into the doorway and Sif hurried into the audience of thousands of Asgardians that had gathered to witness, the masses of people moved like a carefully constructed flow, their heads turning to gaze upon the newest member of the royal family and making it hard for Olympia to forget about their presence.
But, as soon as her widening eyes scanned the lavish room and located Thor at the end of the white carpet laid out and decorated with rose petals, a relieved sigh slipped from between her painted lips and the rest of the people faded into the background. It was like everything else melted away, her focus only on Thor, whose lovestruck stare and blissful smile were visible from the very opposite of the throne room. It was good to see him radiate such joy, and it gave way to a smile on Olympia's own lips as a beautiful Asgardian melody emerged from the orchestra in the corner and her feet, subconsciously, began to lead her towards her fiancé.
The intrigued stares around her followed every calculated step — frankly, it was a miracle she hadn't stumbled on her dress yet — but the almost doubtful look on Thor's face calmed her nerves, like he, too, was struggling to believe that this was real. For Olympia, it was mostly because she had never considered something so magical to be in the cards for her, but Thor, on the other hand, was simply grateful and astonished of the woman he had found on Midgard.
Once she reached him, a quivering breath loaded with emotion filled the air between them, yet there was no hesitance visible in Olympia's blue eyes when they locked with Thor's. His hair and beard were groomed and practically shining under the gentle lights of the room, dim and romantic as the focus rested on the two of them, and for the first time since he had met Olympia, he was dressed in a sleek, black suit — it was something that she had insisted on, promising that everything else could be as Asgardian as necessary, but she was not marrying him in an armor. Or without fries at the table.
"Words cannot describe how divine you look, my love", Thor whispered with a husky tone, a wave of his enticing scent wafting over Olympia when he leaned in just enough to share the words like a precious secret to be guarded. The sincerity in his grave tone made her blush as she glanced at her hidden feet, before nodding right back at him while the head of the ceremony introduced the couple to the audience — as if they needed reminding of the names that had been on everyone's lips as of late.
"You're one to say", Olympia pointed out quietly, an eyebrow jumping higher as she nodded at him, "I will definitely put you in more suits in the future." While gathering her hands in his own, Thor was unable to resist a grin that was both flattered and knowing at the same time — confidence wasn't unusual for him, but it only ran so far, and to have someone he admired so deeply to give it a boost was certainly worthy of a pink tint on his cheeks.
The ceremony was a gradual process, from ancient speeches dug from Asgard's archives to the more formal explanations of what their marriage would entail for the kingdom, but eventually, Thor took in a deep breath in preparation for his vows and tightened his hold on Olympia's hands, thumbs caressing the smooth skin as he inched just the tiniest bit closer. Maybe it was to prove his affection, maybe it was to find security in her, but either way, it entangled Olympia's wires as she beamed up at him with fondness she hadn't expected to feel.
"I wish for you to know that despite our story being nowhere near ordinary, I would not change a thing. Your kind heart and unwavering faith in those around you have made it very easy for me to fall in love with you, and I know I am the luckiest man in all of the nine realms. I promise, not a day will go by without me showing you all the appreciation I possibly can, and I vow to try my best to make you as happy as you make me", Thor emphasized with a solemn tone, his eyes gentle and loving as they searched for Olympia's, but his words heavy and genuine as they hung in the silent air between them. It was a promise he didn't intend to ever break, and she could tell, making it harder for her to not swoon right there and then.
A quiet sniffle broke the silence in the room, and for a second, Thor was about to reach out to wipe the tears of joy from Olympia's cheekbones, but she quickly masked the emotion with a chuckle that earned a choir of the same from the loyal Asgardians. "That's gonna be really hard to beat", Olympia sighed out with adoration, her grip on Thor gaining strength as she straightened her shoulders and drew in a deep breath, "but, I want you to know how grateful I am. I'm still figuring out who I am, exactly, but there is no one I'd rather go down this path with. You are patient and caring and brave and you bring out the best in me. You've given me so much more than I ever thought I was worthy of, literally. I aspire to be the kind of person you are, and I vow to never let you forget how much you mean not only to me but to everyone around you."
It became quiet in the throne room, no one daring to disrupt the peace, but when awkwardness began to creep up Olympia's neck, she couldn't help but lean closer to Thor with a worried look. "Was that a little too much?" she inquired, hoping to be quiet but concluding from the fond snickers rising from the audience, it had been a poor attempt. Nonetheless, Thor sounded a laugh of his own, his eyes crinkling as he cupped Olympia's face with both hands and rested their foreheads together as a silent promise that it had been just perfect.
When the officiant finally declared them bound for life, husband and wife, and their fingers glimmered with new rings, Thor's bud of a smile blew wide and his eyes fluttered shut as he sealed the space between them with both rough hands gentle as ever against Olympia's cheeks. She melted right into him, too, her back arching as she rested her fingertips on the restrained muscles beneath the black jacket and grinned not only at the cheers and grand music surrounding them but Thor's own smirk breaking the deepening kiss only for him to initiate a new one while softly cradling her in his arms.
Only when the first kiss as a married couple threatened to tip the scales over to awkward making-out in front of everyone, they stepped apart, but merely to join hands and walk through the golden arch and up the stairs leading to the thrones they would, one day, sit upon. For now, the responsibility of ruling Asgard still fell on Odin and Frigga's shoulders, for the most part, but it was still an indescribable feeling when they were announced as Olympia Amodei and Thor Odinson, Princess and Prince of Asgard.
Shining with pride, for the first time in a while shedding off the sorrow and regret, Thor wrapped an arm around Olympia's waist as he picked Mjölnir up from next to the throne and hoisted it in the air — rather than a crackle of lightning somewhere in the distance, however, it only caused a snap of applause from the Asgardians in front of them, respectfully lowering into a kneel as the man reveled in all that he had. But, as happy as Olympia was to see him like that, she couldn't help but roll her eyes at the smugness curling his lips higher before leaning over him and, with the help of her tiptoes, snatching the hammer right from his hand.
She guessed that the people of Asgard had never witnessed anyone else lift the hammer before because as soon as the woman flashed a taunting smile at Thor and flipped Mjölnir in her hand, the audience shook with a gasp — as if right there and then, they realized that it was all real. In a way, Olympia was still trying to comprehend it, herself.
Not only approving but appreciative of his wife's confidence after all the uncertainty between them, Thor couldn't help but tug her into another kiss, a little more passionate when his breathless form bumped into Olympia's, enveloping her in a tight embrace as he locked lips with her. Needless to say, the cocky grin on her mouth was wiped away in an instant, her chest tightening as she balanced Mjölnir in one hand and the other found its way to the back of Thor's head.
Incapable of holding back an amazed laugh when Thor trailed one last kiss to the corner of her mouth and then her cheek, Olympia couldn't possibly squirm away when he threw his arm over her shoulders, just like he had done on the first day they had met, before the both of them waved at the crowd with wide smiles and full hearts.
A lot of things had changed since they had first met — Olympia's life had been more or less flipped upside down, and the lost girl lounging in her ex-boyfriend's sweatpants with no idea where to go next in life was long gone, now replaced by a determined Asgardian with a reason to get up every day and a mission to fill in the gaps in her mind. One thing that hadn't changed, though, was the lovesick puppy-like look that Thor gazed at her with, an absent-minded smile on his lips and nothing but undying loyalty and care to give.
And as long as she'd have that, then there wasn't much the future queen wouldn't dare to face.
