Chapter 41: Good Fruit

What Mono advised sank into Persephone's mind as she aimlessly wandered through the great halls of the Underworld alone. She marvelled if maybe she was a little too hard on Hades. And she reminded herself that holding onto anger for someone she loved was never really worth it. She wasn't angry anymore, but disappointment sat in her heart now. She regretted letting her wrath speak for her, especially towards Hades who has always been so kind and protective of her.

At the end, one must remember the nature of the person at fault. Her husband is gentle and lovable no matter what he said during his momentary fit of anger. Persephone must keep in mind that Hades was mad for her sake. He was trying to protect her from danger, even if it was in the most ridiculous way.

Persephone's gaze lifted from her feet. She found herself between dark walls and the faraway screams that were chilling to the bone. "Where am I?" she asked herself. Persephone walked a bit further and found herself outside the palace.

The vast lands of the Underworld laid beyond her feet. She stood on the peak of a cliff that was perched on top of molten lava and fire. The heat was overwhelming; it wasn't comfortable like a hot summer's day but the exact opposite. It felt like her skin could melt off and her bones would combust and the flames would eat her whole. She saw the shadows of demons, witches controlling the dead with thick chains. Persephone moved back on her feet, slowly retreating back to the palace.

Suddenly, the hem of her gown was caught. She turned and saw a pale hand gripping her gown. Persephone's whole body grew cold even though she felt like she was in a volcano. Persephone tried to stay calm and ward off the dead soul, but it didn't work because another joined right after. The panic set in, but the dead wasn't the only thing she had to worry about. A deep thunderous howl cried inside of her, and Persephone was warned that Kore was about to make these dead souls aware of her presence. Now, Persephone panicked because Hades wasn't here and Kore would destroy everything if she unleashed.

Persephone tried to take deep breaths and calm Kore who was the bigger problem. The dead dragging her by her gown didn't bother her that much. Persephone heard her gown tear from the eager hands that climbed the cliff to get to her. She found her chance when the dead loosened their grip on her. Her last thought before she tried to run was Hades. Abruptly, the fires of Tartarus roared burning all of the dead back to where they belonged. Persephone was relived for a momentary second because Kore retreated. But she had another problem. The cliff was about to crumble apart and be swallowed by the same fire.

"Hades," she said his name like a whispering prayer.

Abruptly, her hand was seized and she was whisked away from the tumbling cliff. Persephone gaped at the weak cliff she had been standing on just vanish before her eyes.

"Are you okay?"

She looked up and found Hades scarlet eyes flaming with concern. "Yeah," she said. Her throat had grown dry like dead leaves during winter. "You came," she said timidly.

"Did you call for me?" he asked in return.

She shook her head. "It doesn't matter," she forgot all about the cliff and almost being lunch for the dead. All she could see and feel was Hades. "I'm glad you came to me." she wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him like she could get lost in his arms forever.

He pulled her just as close as she did. "Does this mean you forgive me?" he asked softly.

Persephone combed her fingers through his hair. "I'm sorry I was so hard on you," she said regrettably.

"No, I deserved it for being such a brute," he said. "I'm sorry for treating you like that."

"No, I'm sorry," she said as she pulled away and put her hands on her waist.

Hades shook his head. "No, I'm sorrier, Seph."

She laughed. "What are we doing?"

"Being madly in love that we're trying to make the other happy by apologizing," said Hades with that smile, that swooped her off her feet all the time.

Persephone put her hand on his cheek. "I'll always be madly in love with you, Hades," she said, "even if we get in a fight."

Hades smile widened. "Does this mean my wife has come back to me?" His hands inched closer to her body.

Persephone stepped closer to him. "I think it does," she said. "And this wife is asking for her husband's immediate attention." Her laugh echoed through the halls when Hades flashed them from the dark halls to their bedroom for the next couple of hours.

-A Month Later-

Elysium had officially finished and the Underworld had organized a party to celebrate the birth of their Queen's realm. Everyone had joined in the great hall for the food, music and performances. Persephone congratulated the entire team that helped her for these hard-past couple of weeks. She had created her paradise in the Underworld. A notion people thought was impossible, both Persephone and Hades had done it. And with the help of witches and demons- the very beings many said were evil and couldn't create anything good. But here they were a month later, the same demons and witches created a place where good souls could rest for eternity. If this wasn't a miracle, Persephone didn't know what was.

After the party, the demons had arranged the first flock of good souls that would get to enter Elysium first before anyone. The dozen souls approached the massive gold doors and without hesitation they walked into the white portal. Persephone followed with Hades and Hecate beside her.

A massive garden was revealed. There were mighty trees that blossomed to perfection, marble white fountains and sculptures that were glittering like white stars. A great number of white pavilions were scattered around the land for resting. The picturesque blue sky and the dancing aqua lake brought this haven to life, like Persephone dreamed it would. Elysium had been built by great effort, craftsmanship and teamwork. Persephone could not be prouder of all of their work.

"This is truly beautiful, Seph," said Hades.

She beamed a smile. "I'm so happy right now," she clapped her hands to see everyone enjoy the realm. "See-" she put her hands in Hades- "my hands are even shaking because I'm so ecstatic."

"I'm hope I'm not interrupting?" asked Hecate.

"No, not at all," said Persephone.

"She kind of is," remarked Hades grimly.

Persephone elbowed him. "What can we help you with?" she asked.

Hecate hesitated. "I'd like to make this my home," she requested.

"It is," said Persephone quickly. "Isn't it?" She looked to Hades who also looked stunned by Hecate's odd request.

"I mean that I'd like to officially make you my king and queen," said Hecate awkwardly. "I want a job here...permanently."

Hades and Persephone shared a baffled look.

"We already thought you were staying here," said Hades. "When we offered the Underworld as your home, Hecate, we meant it. Even if you decided to leave, our kingdom is forever your home. You are always welcome here."

"I could not have said it better myself," said Persephone.

Hecate looked between her king and queen. "You two are so odd," she said. But then a smile crept up her red lips. "It's an honour to be by your side. My powers and wisdom are all I can offer, and I offer them both to you."

Persephone hugged Hecate. "Thank you," she whispered and then let go. "See," she turned to her husband, "working with trust and kindness always results to good fruit."

"I learned my lesson, Seph," he said.

"I know you did," she chuckled. "Let's head back everyone!" She announced and all of the demons and witched followed her out of the realm, except for the souls that had come to their heaven.

Life for the king and queen continued with laughter and responsibility. But it seemed like the place that was built to be hell had traded places with Earth, who was crumbling apart from drought and illness with no harvest. Zeus must decide for the fate of the world what to do with this problem that might be out of his hands.
