Chapter 40: Flowers for You
The first thing Hades noticed before he opened his drowsy eyes was that his wife wasn't in bed with him. Hades woke up to an empty bed. No warmth was found next to him; or that steady breathing that was more comforting than fire on a cold night; no smile, which shined brighter than all the stars of the universe. No Seph in Hades arms.
Hades felt like he weighed a ton when he rolled off the cold and hard bed. He flicked a hand over his disheveled appearance, and in seconds, he was dressed for the day ahead of him. He strode out of the bedroom with the intent to find Seph, and fortunately, she was sitting on the lounge chair tying the bow behind her gown. Hades didn't even hesitate before he came behind her and helped her. But she quickly pulled her hands away before he could even get the chance to feel her warmth again. Hades purposely took his time with the task because he wanted his wife near him.
"Seph," he called out when he was finished, but she just walked past him to put on her shoes. "Honey-" she still ignored him when he finally told her- "I apologized to Hecate-" Seph froze before she opened the door to leave- "she gave me her forgiveness-" Seph lifted her chin- "will you not forgive me as well?" he asked her, but she was quiet. "Seph?"
Seph walked out of their room.
Hades let out a deep sigh and wondered if he was this difficult when he was angry about something. He was probably worse, thought Hades. But it still hurt to know that Seph who was so sweet and caring could be cold towards him. Although, he deserved this treatment and that just made him feel a lot worse. Hades had to come up with a plan to make Seph feel better because he wanted his wife back.
Hades marched out of the room to get his plan in action, and the first place he'd have to go was the kitchen. Because everyone loved a surprise breakfast, especially if it's from their King.
Hades confirmed with Dino, that everyone that was stationed with Seph to work on Elysium had arrived. The breakfast feast was prepared and everything had been set up just at the nick of time.
"Sire, everyone's ready," announced West who was the head chef of the Underworld.
Hades nodded. "Thank you, West."
He strode off towards his wife and her massive team. When he had arrived to the Elysium sight, he noticed everyone was just starting to work and diligently getting ready for the day ahead of them. Hades presence was known to everyone in seconds because that's just how it's always been with him. But he didn't really care for all of the other eyes. He only wanted those melted honey regal eyes to look his way, like they were right now.
"Your queen and I prepared breakfast for the entire Elysium team," announced Hades boastfully as his eyes watched his wife's reaction. "If everyone could just head down to the main hall, you'll meet West and his team."
The crowd's sleepy expressions flipped. They cheered to express their joy, but they didn't move until their queen approved. Seph's eyes were glaring at Hades from across the hall, but she easily gave in.
"Go on then," she beamed that enchanting smile right through all of them, especially Hades. "Enjoy breakfast while it's still hot."
"Won't you join us?" asked Mono.
Seph shook her head. "I'm not in the mood."
Hades panicked because he made all of her favourite dishes. This whole plan was to impress her and feed her good food. What was he going to do now? he wondered grimly.
"You need food in your body if you're going to work," remarked Hecate unexpectedly. "It'll do us no good if collapse half way through."
"She's right," said Mono.
Hades waited for her answer a little too desperately.
"Fine," Seph agreed and he unknowingly let out a breath of relief.
"Right this way," said Hades as he leads everyone down to the main hall.
Everyone crammed their plates with tons of food like this was their last meal. Amused, Hades watched his people gather at the tables and enjoy the delicious food with great company.
Hades knew his wife better than anyone; she secretly watched him as he did her. However, Hades was clever just as much as he was patient. He looked away every time her eyes wandered over to him. She hesitantly grabbed a plate and eyed the food with glittery stars in her wide eyes. She licked her plump lips and bit into the soft flesh, like she was trying to resist her gluttonous appetite. But Hades knew better and that she wouldn't be able to resist. He was proven correct when she started layering her plate with hot, steaming food; satisfying him and the head chef.
"Nice plan," praised Hecate.
Hades looked at the goddess with a hidden smirk. "Thanks."
"She's still mad at you?" she asked.
"Hopefully after this, she lessens her anger," shared Hades.
"She will," said Hecate. "Persephone just needs to put you in your place first. And I think it's working." Hecate sauntered off after a good hearty laugh at him.
Hades didn't even disagree with what she just jabbed in his face. She was right about Seph and him. He has never been put in his place, like how his wife had done. Victoriously, Hades enjoyed an apple as he watched everyone enjoy this special surprise.
"Thank you so much," many demons, witches and sorcerers said before they left the hall to get back to work.
Hades waited for everyone to leave before he ambushed his wife in the lonely hallway. "Now that you've eaten delicious food and have rested well," he announced behind her, "will you forgive me?"
Seph stopped in her tracks. "Thank you for the meal," she said, "it was delicious." And then, she stalked off. Back to business as usual.
"Just take a deep breath, Hades," he grumbled under a shaky breath.
Hades wanted to rip his hair out for being so frustrated, but he remained calm as usual. He didn't rile up the fires in Tartarus like he so wanted to right now. He coolly thought of the next plan, which was off to the gates of this realm because he needed his buddy, Cerberus for the next task.
-Persephone's POV-
Persephone really didn't want to eat the breakfast, but it was all of her favourite foods and the head chef looked so forward to her reaction. It didn't go unnoticed either, that Hades was watching her all throughout breakfast. She wasn't as angry as she was yesterday, but her temper was cold, like icy hot fire that'd give one a frostbite.
Last night, she had decisively planned to stay in her garden and then head off to work right in the morning. But when she woke up today where did she find herself; she was tangled in bedsheets and tightly locked in Hades arms and pressed against his chest, body and warmth. She couldn't deny that she wanted to forget her anger and just fall back asleep. But she needed to prove her point, which was more important than her desires.
She had to admit that Hades showed maturity by apologizing to Hecate. Persephone forgave him for what happened. But it was the trust that bothered her and the choice he forced upon her. She wasn't going to let this go so easily because she didn't want this ever happening again. Hades needs to learn to trust her judgment, just like how she has always trusted his.
A good three hours went by working on the interior of the realm with Pain, Hecate and Mono. They all exited Elysium for a quick break.
"Hades came to me yesterday," said Hecate.
Persephone nodded.
"He apologized," she added, "which surprised me. But then I figured that you told him to do that."
"I did," said Persephone.
"But you're still upset?" she asked. Persephone pierced her lips together. "You don't have to tell me," said Hecate. "But...I wish you'd two would stop."
Persephone was about to answer to Hecate, when they heard a distant bell chime. Both of the goddesses saw the rowdy three-headed hound charge towards them.
Cerberus found his way towards Persephone. He sat down and his three heads hovered over her knees. His tongues were out and he was excited about something.
"What's that around his neck?" asked Hecate.
Persephone looked at the chain around his neck. Each head had a different flower. The first were a bunch of small heliotropes scattered all over Cerberus's collar. They reminded her of the night she had spent with Hades in her secret garden back in Olympus. The middle head had magenta coneflowers; the same flowers she used to heal Hades wound on his hand, which he got trying to save her. The last head had those unforgettable black and gold roses.
"Why are there flowers around his necks?" asked Hecate.
Persephone could feel it again. His eyes were on her. She bit back her smile but it was too late, Hades already saw her because he stood right in front of her. He was leaning on the wall, watching her with those smoking red eyes.
She shook her head. "Just some distinct memories attached to the flowers," she told Hecate.
She gathered the flowers and laid them next to her. Persephone kissed all of Cerberus's heads and patted him for his good work. Cerberus licked her hand before he heard Hades sharp whistle. The hound licked her hand once more before he returned to Hades side again.
"It's not easy for men to remember details like that," said Mono as he joined them with Pain.
Persephone crossed her arms. "I know, Mono," she said. "But he needs to understand that he wronged me."
"And he does," said Mono. "I just hope that you work it out like how you two always do-" Mono's beady blue eyes looked at her- "together."
