49 | castles crumbling down
Angela was getting ready in her dorm for the last Hogsmeade weekend of the year. She hadn't wanted to go. In fact, she tried everything she could to get out of it but James was adamant that she would come. 'It's our last trip together.' Leave it to James to pull whatever card he needs to to get what he wants.
She searched for her coat in frustration. She had to have it somewhere but where was the question. She knelt down on the ground and checked under her bed. She didn't find the jacket but she found something she had almost forgotten about.
She reached under, pulling out the object. She flipped the mirror open with a sigh. She traced the edges as though it were the boy himself. "Oh, Reggie..." she muttered, a frown taking over her expression. Her eyes welled up slightly, and the mirror shimmered slightly. After a moment, the boy appeared and Angela practically threw the mirror across the room. "Shit."
"Angela?" Regulus asked, confusion laced in his tone. "Angela, are you there?" His voice was soft, and gentle and so welcoming she wanted to curse herself into oblivion for being so incredibly stupid.
"No," she said in response, her nose wrinkling slightly at yet another stupid choice. She was on a roll recently. She crossed the room to the mirror and she picked it up to see that it had cracked slightly but she could still see the boy. "I didn't mean to call you...it was an accident."
He raised an eyebrow at this, "It's a pretty intentional device, my love. It's kind of hard to accidentally call someone."
She let out a sigh of defeat. He was right. A part of her knew that when she picked up the mirror but she hadn't realized that he would actually answer. The odds of him having it on him were slim. "I'm sorry for bugging you, I have to go."
"Wait," he said hastily. "Don't - don't go yet."
"This isn't a good idea," she shook her head, "I meant what I said."
"I've missed you, Angel," he informed her and she melted at this. "And I heard you, I did. I just...I deserve to say goodbye." She wasn't entirely sure that he deserved anything but she stayed silent so he could speak. "I - I honestly didn't expect to get this far. I have expected you to close the mirror on me."
"That's not a bad idea."
"Can we talk?" he requested and shot him a pointed look. "In person, I mean."
"No," she responded simply, and the hurt on his face was clear. "Whatever you have to say to me can be said here. Otherwise you can forever hold your peace because I won't be alone with you again, Regulus. Not in this lifetime."
"Okay, alright," he said hesitantly. "Look, Angela, I realize that our relationship was never the most typical for our age or any age for that matter...But I think it works for us, you know? And I know that this is more complicated than it should be but I love you. And that is not complicated. In fact, it's the simplest thing I know. Loving you. 'And yet I wish for the thing I have; my bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love is deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.'"
She sucked in a breath, "You read my book."
"I did," he replied. "And I get it, I think. Why muggles so attached to this sort of writing. Why you're so attached to this writing. That no matter what everyone else thought, no matter what they world told them to be true, they loved one another. Nothing stood in their way."
"Regulus, this is different," Angela frowned. And if only she had realized it sooner, she would have prevented a great deal of pain for herself and for him too. "Romeo and Juliet didn't have a choice in the rivalry that went on between their families. They weren't in the middle of a magical wizarding war. We are actively participating on opposite sides of a war with very opposing views. And you're right, in some ways. Loving each other is easy. But everything else? Everything else matters. You have to realize that."
"It doesn't have to though," he shook his head. "We can leave this all behind and-"
"And what?" she scoffed. "Stay hidden until this war is done? Pretend this never happened? That won't work for me, I'm not a coward."
His eyebrows pinched together at this, "Of you're suggesting what I think you're suggesting, Angela, you-"
"I'm not suggesting anything," she shook her head. "Maybe you were right, this isn't a conversation we can have like this."
"Great then meet me-"
"I'm meeting my friends in Hogsmeade."
"It won't-"
"I'm already late, Regulus."
"Alright, fine," he huffed, "We can meet later tonight. At the come and go room?"
"Fine," she replied and then she hung up on him before he could get another word out. She immediately searched under her bed again before she caught sight of her jacket and made her way to Hogsmeade.
Angela made her way through the castle, tightening her jacket around herself. James was going to be so pissed at her for being late. She rounded the corner to come face to face with Remus. "Remus!" she exclaimed. "Sorry, I'm late, I was-"
"Merlin, Ang, where have you been?" Remus demanded and she was taken aback by his tone of voice. "We haven't been able to find you anywhere!"
"What's going on?"
"Something happened in Hogsmeade," he explained. "James was hurt."
Angela felt as though all the blood rushed from her body, "What?" She shook her head, "I don't understand, how could this happen?"
"We were attacked," he explained, "They were everywhere. Sirius and Peter are fine. But James-"
"He's alive," Remus nodded, and Angela let out a breath of relief. "He's at Mungo's now. They said we can visit him tomorrow but they want to keep him there under their supervision indefinitely."
"'Indefinitely'?" she repeated. "Oh, Merlin. This is my fault."
"What?" he asked. "This isn't your fault, Angela. In no way is this your fault."
"I - I have to go," she said before she turned and practically sprinted in the opposite direction.
"Angela!" he called after her but she didn't look back.
Angela had gone for a particularly long walk in hopes of finding some sort of calmness in the anger that stewed inside of her. And of course she hadn't.
The second she entered the come and go room, she didn't even give him a second to say anything before she started yelling.
"You are the worst type of person, Regulus Black," Angela practically spat, venom lacing every word. "And somehow I have still cared for you but that ends today."
His eyes widened at this, "What happened? Why are you-"
"Oh, don't give me that," she growled. "I was so stupid! Absolutely moronic! And he warned me! And yet...I can't even blame you, not really. No, no. I can blame you. In fact, I do blame you."
"Blame me for what exactly?"
"You want a list?" she countered. "Because I'm sure I could go all night."
"Angel, please-"
"No!" she exclaimed, cutting him off. "I don't want to hear another excuse, or-or anymore of you begging or-"
He moved towards her, holding her arms as he bent down so that he was looking in her eyes, "Angel, you don't understand, this is all I have! I can't - I won't - make it without you, don't you get that?"
She shook her head, "And I won't make it with you. What about that is so hard to understand?"
Regulus stepped back at this, "You're serious?"
"I don't know why I ever thought this was a good idea to begin with," she informed him simply. "Goodbye, Regulus. And this time, for good."
"Why are you doing this to me?"
"I'm not doing anything to you," she countered. "You did this to yourself." Angela went to leave the room but Regulus grabbed her arm. She yanked it from his grasp, "Don't touch me."
He threw his hands up in surrender, "What happened?"
"Like you don't know," she accused.
"I don't know!" he exclaimed. "Otherwise I wouldn't be asking you."
"You distracted me!" she shouted, slamming her hand against his chest. "You stalled and you kept asking me to stay and I - I did because some stupid infinitesimal part of me will always love you. But I shouldn't. And I will do whatever I have to do to forget you."
He shook his head, "You don't mean that."
"I mean every word."
Angela left the room before he could convince her to stay. But if she hadn't, she would have realized that he wasn't going to try.
The next day, Angela and the boys arrived at the hospital, escorted by Dumbledore himself. They let her go in first and she reluctantly did so.
"Oh, Merlin," she said as she stared at her brother in bed. "Are you - are you okay?"
"I'm alive," he informed her and her shoulders slumped forward at this, a sob escaping her throat. "Come here."
Angela crossed the room to his bed and he pulled her into a hug, "I'm so sorry. This is all my fault."
"No, it's not, you didn't do anything wrong," he informed her.
"I should be the one comforting you right now," she pointed out between sniffles, "Not the other way around."
He waved this off, "What are big brothers for?"
She let out another sob at this, pressing her forehead into his shoulder. "I should have been there. I - I couldn't have stopped it - or helped or-"
"You would have just gotten yourself hurt."
"I don't care," she shook her head, "I can't lose you, James. I can't do this without you."
"Hey," he said gently as he pulled her closer against him, "I'm not going anywhere."
"James..." she said hesitantly and the boy looked at her, "I - I need you to do something for me."
"Of course, anything," he nodded vehemently.
"I need you to Obliviate me."
He faltered at this, "What?"
"I - I need to forget about Reggie," she explained and his expression softened. "I know the risks, and no matter how hard I try, I can't stop going back to him. I almost got you killed, James. You were right before. I was being reckless and stupid and jeopardizing those I care about. I won't do that anymore."
"This is a big decision, Ang," he shook his head slightly.
"I know, and I'm not making it lightly," she replied. "Please."
"Okay," he agreed, shifting in the bed. "But it has to wait until I'm out of here. If you still feel this way by then, then I'll do it." He placed his hand over his sisters, "Angela, please, think about this."
"Of course." But her mind was made up ages ago.
