23 | pre-birthday special
The Gryffindor Quidditch team had indeed won the cup and James and Sirius had been running on a high. Not only had James brought the team to victory during his first year as captain but the Gryffindor were now on a six year winning streak.
"Potter, if you don't shut the hell up, I'm going to shove your Quidditch broom so far up your ass your going to regret ever even thinking about playing the stupid sport," America informed him with a sneer and he clamped his mouth shut, glaring at the sixth year.
"Who pissed in your cereal this morning?" Sirius inquired.
"Angela."
Angela's head shot up at this as everyone turned to look at her, "I think I would remember using the restroom in your cereal."
America narrowed her eyes, "You know exactly what the issue is."
She raised an eyebrow, "Actually, I don't think I do."
"Fine, next time you come into our room at three in the morning, I'll make sure to let you know I'm awake," America huffed and this successfully piqued Sirius's interest.
"Three in the morning, huh?" he mused and Angela felt the color drain from her face. "Who's the lucky guy-" he paused for a moment, "-or girl?"
"There's no one," she muttered. "I was just out late studying."
"Explains why you have so many shirts that you didn't have at the start of the year," America stated.
"Is that where all my clothes went?" James inquired and Angela mentally thanked him. He turned to his sister with a pointed look, "I thought I told you to stop taking my clothes."
She shrugged, "They're comfortable."
"You have your own clothes."
"It's not the same."
"Start buying clothes that are big for you."
"You could just buy new clothes."
"I have clothes," he pointed out. "I shouldn't have to buy new ones."
"Well this was anti-climatic," Sirius huffed. "Both of you, sort out your problems elsewhere. None of us care to hear about them."
"And how long should we make ourselves scarce for?" Angela asked as she stood up.
"Till five at the earliest," America replied and Sirius elbowed her. "Hmph...I mean, why would it matter?"
The two siblings made their way out of the common room, waving a quick goodbye. Angela turned to her brother, "Thank you."
"Think of it as the first part of your birthday present," he shrugged. "But I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable with you sneaking out so late to meet up with him."
"It's the only time we can meet," she pointed out. "We can't exactly sneak around in broad daylight without the risk of getting caught."
"I manage just fine."
"Your consequence isn't death, James."
"Is reminding me that your relationship could lead to death really a good idea?" he asked.
She huffed, "You'll get over it eventually."
"Mom would suggest you read your book again."
"Mom would have a good point but she would also understand that this isn't Romeo and Juliet and neither of us are going to kill ourselves."
"Isn't that what you're doing, though?"
"I'll see you later," she waved off, "Happy Birthday, loser."
"Happy birthday, sis."
They parted ways after this, both of them making their way to their secret significant other.
After the Quidditch game, they both sat down and discussed the newly discovered information. Angela informed James that she had known about him and Lily for a while but she didn't understand why they were keeping it a secret. James explained that Lily wasn't ready to tell the school about their relationship just yet.
When Angela questioned this, he brought up Regulus which led to an even more complicated conversation. James had known that Angela was trying to get Regulus to understand what was really going on for Sirius's sake but he hadn't realized just how close the two had gotten.
He definitely wasn't a fan.
Angela opened the door to the Room of Requirement to find Regulus sitting on the couch with his head in his hands. She closed the door quietly and made her way over to the boy.
"Reggie?" she inquired and his head shot up. He turned to look at her and immediately relaxed, a smile taking over his face. "Hey."
He stood up and circled the couch, wrapping his arms around her waist. He pressed his lips against her and she leaned into him eagerly, resting her hands against his chest, "Happy Birthday, my love."
She grinned at this, looking up at him, "Thank you."
He pulled her closer as he spoke, "I think you're too old for me now."
"I'm only three months older than you," she pointed out.
He shrugged, "You're basically a cougar."
"Do you even know what that means?"
"Not really but I remember Sirius talking about how hot they were."
"Your brother's a pig."
"Touché," he nodded. "I take it back then."
"You can't take it back, you already said it."
"I hardly think that's fair."
"Next time you should think before you speak."
"Yeah, yeah," he rolled his eyes. "I told Crouch and them that I was going to be studying alone for the rest of the day for O.W.L's," he informed her, "So I can spend the day with you, at least until your surprise party at which point I will be studying while you do whatever Gryffindor's do at parties."
Angela smiled at this, "You could come."
He shook his head, "Bad idea."
"You went to Sirius's party."
"For two seconds," he reminded her. "Besides, he's my brother. You're- Well, as far as anyone else is concerned, you're the enemy."
She pushed away from him slightly, "The enemy?"
He faltered, "You know what I mean."
"No, I don't think I do," she shook her head as she pulled away from him completely. "What do you mean?"
"Angel, do we have to have this conversation right now?"
She raised an eyebrow, "I have time and you just said you did too. I'm waiting."
"It's your birthday, I don't want to-"
"Upset me?" she finished for him. "I assure you, Regulus, I'm already upset. Making me wait will only prolong the inevitable."
"I'd rather we didn't talk about it right now."
"We have to talk about it at some point."
"No, we don't."
"Three months," she said pointedly. "In three months you'll be sixteen making you eligible to be a Death Eater. Are you going to do it?"
He frowned, "Angel-"
"Answer me."
"I really don't-"
"Regulus."
"Look, I know-"
"Regulus!"
"Yes."
Her heart stopped in her chest, "Yes?"
"Yes, I'm going to do it," he informed her. He reached forward, "Now that we go that out of the way, can we-"
"'Out of the way'?" she gaped, taking a step back. "This isn't some difference in opinion on who the better Quidditch team is, Black! You can't become a Death Eater."
He raised an eyebrow, ignoring the dull ache in his chest as she so easily slipped back into old habits. Habits they had before they had become whatever they were. "I made it clear from the beginning where I stood."
"And I'm a bloody moron, aren't I?" she concluded, unable to fight the tears that welled in her eyes. "This whole time I thought you had cared about me!"
"What?" he said in confusion, shaking his head. He reached toward her again and she immediately pulled away, "Merlin, Angel, of course I care."
"If you cared, you wouldn't be doing this."
"I'm not doing anything."
"Godric, you're more dense than your brother!" she exclaimed.
"Of course you're going to bring up that blood traitor!" he said in reply, all self-control thrown out the window. "You and him and your stupid brother-" He cut himself off as he realized what he was saying, the color draining from his already pale face.
Angela scoffed, shaking her head in disbelief, "I guess some people don't change, huh?"
"Wait, Angel, I-" but the door slammed shut before he could make up an excuse.
