TWENTY-NINE

Things have been going well with Liam. Granted, it's only been a few days but we have been spending a lot of time together, both in human and wolf form. Jade really enjoys going on runs and playing around with River. She says that being close to River will strengthen the bond not just between the two of them, but also between Liam and I. I'm not sure if she is actually telling the truth or just making up excuses to convince me to let her spend time with her mate.

Meanwhile, I have forced Liam to watch chick-flicks with me, multiple times, while he has been trying to get me to watch horror films. I say trying, because so far he hasn't succeeded. My whining and puppy-dog eyes have been convincing enough for him to settle on action movies or thrillers instead.

He has been respecting my decision to take things slow, so things haven't proceeded any further than making out, although, that seems to be happening a lot.

Liam has decided to hold my Luna ceremony after Christmas. Even though werewolves don't celebrate Christmas, Liam's pack uses the occasion to throw a huge party, nonetheless. It's basically just an excuse to bring everyone together and get wasted.

Normally, I would visit my Mom for Christmas, but she has decided to celebrate it in Europe with George. I am happy that she is finally letting loose and allowing herself to enjoy life. I still haven't told her about Liam but I know that I need to have that conversation with her very soon. I am just scared that I will open up past wounds by bringing up mates and packs. But the fact that I have decided to stay here changes everything. I can't hide my entire life from her. Christmas is in ten days so I still have some time before my entire life changes.

I start working at the pack hospital today and reach there just before nine, running into Lucas on the way. We both head to Dr. Olivia Williams' office and are greeted by a middle-aged man with dark hair and brown eyes. He says hello to Lucas and shakes his hand before turning his attention to me.

"I'm Dr. Dave Martinez. It's nice to finally meet you, Luna," he says as he extends his hand towards me.

"Oh no. I'm here to learn from you. Please call me, April," I chuckle and shake his hand.

"Dave," he says with a smile.

Olivia also walks into her office at that moment and chimes in. "Ah, I see you have already met." She saunters over to Dave and pecks his lips. He smiles at her and lightly places his hand on her back as she turns to face me and Lucas.

"So Lucas, you will be coming with me, and April will go with Liv," Dave says getting right to the point. Lucas nods and they both leave the room.

"So you and Dave," I give Olivia a questioning look.

"We're mates," she informs and I can feel a sense of pride in her voice.

"Must be nice, working together," I add.

"It is," she smiles. "Come on, let's go then." She walks out the door, motioning for me to follow her.

"We don't get a lot of patients since werewolves have a fast healing process," she explains as we walk through a brightly lit hallway. "We mostly deal with wounds that are too deep and will take too long to heal on their own, or broken bones. You have to be very quick when dealing with a broken bone or it might heal incorrectly." I nod as I try to make a mental note of everything she tells me. "And of course, kids," she adds. "Since their wolves haven't emerged yet, they heal a bit slower so we have to treat them as such," she finishes just as we walk into a small room with a man and a woman inside.

The woman is sitting on the gurney placed in the centre of the room with her feet dangling in the air. An ultrasounds machine is placed on the left side of the small bed. The man is standing next to her with his hand placed on her shoulder. The both immediately look up at us as we enter.

"Hello Emily, Daniel," Olivia says as she nods at them and smiles. "This is Dr. April, she will be helping me today," she says pointing at me.

"Hi," I mumble as I look at them and give them a small smile.

"Emily here is 18 weeks pregnant," Olivia explains. "They are here today to find out the baby's gender." She walks over and stands next to Daniel gesturing for me to perform the ultrasound.

I smile weakly and walk over to the machine. I turn it on and sit down on the stool placed next to it. I have done this a couple of times before but someone would always be with me to help out so I can't help but feel a little nervous.

"Can you lie down for me, Emily? And lift your shirt, please." I order. She nods and follows my command.

"Okay, this will feel a little cold," I warn as I apply the lubricating gel to her belly. I place the transducer onto her and begin moving it around. After looking at the scans, it takes me a little while to figure out the gender of the baby. Once I'm confident of my observation, I finally give the couple the news.

"Congratulations, you're having a boy," I exclaim. They both gasp and Daniel kisses Emily as they celebrate the news. After thanking us both, they leave and Olivia and I head out as well.

"That was great," she exclaims once we are back in the hallway and moving about.

"Everything else should be pretty simple as well, but I would recommend you read some books about how the werewolf body functions. You can get them from the library. It's the building next to the hospital," she says.

"Thanks, I'll get to that today," I respond.

She goes quiet for a few seconds and I can tell from her expression that she is mind-linking someone. She starts moving quickly and leads us through a couple of hallways into a room where a young boy is sitting on a bed with a deep gash on his forehead.

"I trust, you will be able to handle this," Olivia asks me.

"Yes, I got this," I say nodding and she leaves me with the boy and his mother. Stitching up wounds is something I have practiced a lot and I'm proud to admit that I'm pretty good at it.
I smile at them and introduce myself. The boy who looks to be about ten, is crying as the blood oozes out of his forehead, covering his face. His mother has a worried look on her face.

"What happened," I ask her as I sit down in front of the boy.

"He was just playing outside. I think he slipped in the snow and hit his head on something. I thought it would heal on its own but when the bleeding didn't stop, I brought him here," she explains in a weak voice.

"Don't worry, we'll fix this in no time," I smile and begin to clean his wound.

"What's your name," I ask the boy to distract him.

"Eric," he replies through sobs.

"Eric? Well aren't you the one that helped me the other day," I say with a smile.

"Ye-yes," he mumbles.

"Thanks for that. I know I distracted you from your TV show." I grab the forceps and the needle and thread to start suturing.

"You're welcome," he says, softly. He has stopped crying now.

"So, tell me about the show you were watching," I say and begin stitching his wound as he begins to describe some cartoon show. He winces as the needle enters his skin.

"Don't worry, you're very strong. You won't even feel anything. Now, go on," I comfort.

He's still talking when I'm done with the stitches. I bandage him up and let him know he's all done. He gives me a huge grin and his mother thanks me. I give her the instructions on how to take care of the wound, but I don't think she will need them very much. Sure, his healing process might be slow, but it's still faster than normal humans.

I return back to Olivia and she shows me around the hospital a little bit. We see a few other patients and then she takes me to the library. She picks out a couple of books for me and we return with them to the hospital. Lucas and Dave join us at around two and Olivia tells us that we can leave for the day. We say our goodbyes and walk out of the hospital.

"Well, that was quick," I say to Lucas.

"Pros of being a werewolf doctor. There's barely any patients," he grins.

"I could get used to this," I say with a laugh.

"Yeah, even Olivia and Dave don't stay at the hospital the entire time," he explains. "Whenever something happens, they are mind-linked so they can arrive when needed."

"Wait, so does this mean we won't have to pull any night shifts," I ask, the shock evident in my voice.

"Yup," he replies.

We walk for a few seconds in silence before I speak again. "Uh, could you ask Liam where he is?"

"Why? Do you miss him already?" He asks with a smirk.

I smack his arm. "Just ask him."

"Damn, okay, your highness," he says while rubbing his arm as he tries to link Liam.

"He says he's at home and dying to see you again," he adds dramatically, after a few seconds.

"Yeah yeah," I say dismissively.

"So should I assume you will be ditching me," he asks feigning hurt.

"Definitely," I say flatly.

"Love has made you cruel, April," he states.

"No it hasn't," I reply, almost too quickly. "I mean, I don't. I'm not in love," I stutter.

"Sure, whatever you say," he says throwing his hands up. "I'll see you later," he chuckles as he turns to walk to the pack house.

I rush back home, already getting excited to see Liam again. It's an unexpected feeling since it has only been a few hours since I last saw him. Arriving back at the house, I follow Liam's scent to his study. Spending time with him has made Jade stronger and all my werewolf senses have heightened.

"Honey, I'm home," I chirp jokingly as I walk into the room.

"Hey, how was your first day," he asks, getting out of his chair and walking towards me.

"Good. But surprisingly short," I tell him as he pulls me by the waist and crashes his lips into mine. I'm a little shocked at first but recover quickly and kiss him back. My heartbeat becomes erratic and I wonder if kissing him will always have this effect on me. The shock quickly gives way to butterflies in my stomach as all my blood rushes to my heart which has decided to go into overdrive. His hand slowly trails up my back but unfortunately, the moment doesn't last very long as we are interrupted by my growling stomach.

"I'm hungry," I giggle, stating the obvious. Our faces are still only inches apart and Liam has me in his hold. Slowly lifting my gaze, I look into his eyes which have turned into the darkest shade of grey.

He moves his lips towards my ear and my skin buzzes with electricity as they brush against it.
"So am I," he growls in my ear and begins to trail kisses down my neck.

"Liam!" I gasp and feel his lips curve into a smirk against my neck. He groans but pulls away, a huge grin plastered on his face.

It takes me a few seconds to clear my head and I can see the amusement in his eyes as he watches me trying to not look so flustered.

"So what's for lunch," I finally speak as I walk out and towards the kitchen.

"Um, nothing?" He replies walking behind me.

"What do you mean?" I ask looking at him wide-eyed.

"I mean there's nothing at home," he informs as he nervously rubs the back of his head.

I walk over to the fridge and search it's contents but find nothing to eat. After looking around the kitchen for a little while, I finally settle my eyes on Liam as I think of our last resort.

"Pack house?" I ask.

"Pack house." He nods and we both take off.

"You know, you really need to hire some help around here," I mutter as we exit the house.

"I'm not a big fan of having people in the house," he retorts.

"Really," I ask with a raised eye-brow.

"Except you, of course," he quickly adds and laughs nervously.

"So where do you usually eat?"

"I'm rarely ever home so I just always ate at the pack house," he informs.

"But you're home most of the time now," I argue.

"I didn't have a reason to stay at home before. Now I do," he shrugs.

With how casually he said that sentence, I don't think he realised that it had the ability to turn my face the colour of a tomato. I steal a glance towards him and notice him smiling at my reaction.

Clearing my throat, I manage to speak up. "Well, I can barely make my way to the kitchen so I'm not walking to the pack house everyday just to get a meal," I complain.

"Fine. Fine. I'll look into it," he agrees while shaking his head in amusement.
