THIRTY
My second day at the hospital has been pretty much the same as the first. I'm starting to learn where everything is and Olivia doesn't have to show me around as much anymore.
After dealing with the initial appointments Olivia had for the day, Lucas and I are sitting free in the hospital cafeteria. It's a small place, mostly used by all the omegas who work here. He is helping me go over one of the books I got from the library yesterday. I am trying to learn werewolf anatomy when Olivia joins us at the table. She greets us and then turns to face me.
"April, I wanted to talk to you about something," he begins.
"Is everything okay," I ask.
"Yes, yes. I was just going through my files and I came across this," she says, sliding a folder across the table. I open it and begin looking through and Lucas joins me as well.
"Chloe is actually a human," Olivia informs as Lucas and I skim through her file. I see the results of numerous tests, all of which seem to be normal.
"She seems fine to me," I say as I continue scanning the file.
"Yeah," Lucas agrees.
"Yes, all of her test results are normal. But her and her mate have been trying to have a baby for more than a year now and there hasn't been any luck," she explains.
"What about her mate," I ask.
"Werewolves don't experience infertility. Neither male, nor female. But even then, we checked him out and all his tests were normal as well."
"The truth is, until you, we thought it was simply because werewolves and humans couldn't procreate together." She finishes.
"Oh. I didn't know that," I say, nervously. "I don't know how I can help with this, though" I add.
"I was wondering if you could tell me about your parents. Did they experience anything like this or was everything normal for them?"
I begin to explain to her how I didn't really know my father until I was eighteen but considering the sudden situation of my mother's pregnancy, it's pretty clear they didn't experience any problems in that department.
"We could do some research and see if we can find more people like me," I add. "I mean, I knew it was uncommon for werewolves to have human mates but I didn't realise it was that rare."
Our conversation is cut short when someone mind-links Olivia to let her know a boy broke his arm while training. I offer to deal with the situation and she gladly agrees. I get up and leave for the emergency room, navigating easily through the building. Upon entering the room, I spot the boy sitting on the bed, his arm limping on the side. He looks around eighteen or nineteen.
I walk over to him and introduce myself as I begin examining his arm. He winces a little but doesn't make a sound.
"Looks like a dislocated shoulder," I say assessing the injury.
We are interrupted by faint sounds of people yelling.
"Wonder what that's all about," the boy murmurs as the ruckus outside slowly grows louder.
"Why don't you find out," I say pointing to his head, suggesting he mind-link to see if someone can tell him what's going on.
He nods and begins concentrating and I take the opportunity to pop the bone back into the socket. He yelps in pain and I give him a huge smile. "All fixed," I say. He slowly moves his arm around, smiling. "You should be back to normal in a couple of hours," I inform.
The noise outside begins to grow and we both snap our head in its direction direction.
"There's been some kind of attack," the boy says in a serious tone and I turn my gaze towards him.
"What," I yelp, a little too loudly. "What's happening," I ask him, trying to stay calm.
"That's all I could find out," he replies.
"I better go see if I can help out," I state and excuse myself.
I quickly run out to the trauma ward where the noise is coming from. It's a big room with beds on each side which are separated by blue curtains.
I enter and find myself staring at injured men and women lying on the beds. Various omegas are running around with carts and some are busy helping them. I spot a couple of doctors I haven't seen around before. They look a bit old which means they don't work here anymore and were specifically called to help out because of the patient load. Lucas is treating a man on the far end of the room and I see Dave run out dragging a man on a gurney, surrounded by three omegas.
My thoughts immediately start running wild. I can't help the unsettling feeling growing inside me. Why would anyone attack? Could it be Daxton and his pack? Is there a battle going on outside that I don't even know of? What if something happened to Liam? The thought of Liam being injured claws at my heart but I instantly push it away. He will be fine. He has to be.
I try to gather my wits as I spot a frantic looking Olivia transferring a profusely bleeding woman onto a gurney and begin to drag her out. I rush over to her and ask how I can be of help. She directs me to deal with the low grade injuries around the room as she takes the woman up for surgery. I nod my head in compliance and get to work after saying a silent prayer for Liam.
A couple of hours have passed and there are no more injured warriors arriving. I have dealt with the injuries of about four or five people, darting my eyes around every now and then, searching the room for Liam. I comfort myself with the fact that if he is not here, then it means he wasn't injured.
Everything finally seems to be under control and even the older doctors have left. Most of the patients decided to leave after getting treatment as they were beginning to feel better quickly, thanks to their werewolf genes.
I'm working on the last patient, who has various cuts and bruises over his back and shoulder. Lucas comes over to me to ask if I need any help once he is finished with his patients.
"No, I got this. You should go take a break," I say as I clean my patient's wounds and begin stitching them up.
He nods and leaves. Only a few of the beds are now occupied and the room has mostly emptied out. I'm almost done when a voice calls out from behind me.
"Is everyone good, doc," the deep voice questions.
I finish applying the stitches and turn around to meet the owner of the voice. A tall, muscular man walks over to me. He is only wearing basketball shorts and his dark skin is covered in sweat. I recognise him as the man who arrived with the last batch of injuries and has been running around, checking on everyone ever since. When he finally approaches me, his expression changes from concerned to surprise.
"I'm sorry, Luna. I didn't realise it was you," he says, bowing his head in respect.
"Don't worry about it," I say brushing him off. "In here, I'm just a doctor." I give him a smile that is quickly replaced by a small gasp when I notice the giant gash on his arm. It runs all the way from his shoulder to his elbow and looks very deep.
"You're injured. Let me take a look at that," I offer.
"I'll be fine," he retorts. "You don't become the head warrior without dealing with a few cuts here and there," he smirks.
I pinch my eyebrows together. "That's not just a cut. You're still bleeding."
"My wolf is strong. I should be good in a little while. Besides I need to check on everyone else," he says, puffing his chest out in pride.
"I'm sure you can see everyone else is perfectly fine," I say gesturing around the almost empty room. "Even the two that were severely injured are out of surgery and doing well," I inform.
"So come on, let me clean that up. It will help you heal faster."
He reluctantly agrees and follows me to a nearby empty bed. He sits down on it and I begin cleaning the blood around his wound.
"So, what really happened," I ask. The head warrior will definitely know everything about the attack.
"We were attacked by rogues," he informs.
"Is that a usual occurrence," I ask.
"It's not very frequent but it happens sometimes. Dealing with rogues is not hard because there are never more than three or four. But there were about twenty of them today. It seems they had been trained to fight. Unfortunately for them, they still lacked the discipline of a pack, which helped us in fighting them off. It's highly unlikely for rogues to work together in such large numbers so there is definitely something else at play here. We managed to capture one alive. Hopefully, we can get some answers from him," he explains.
"Oh," is all that I can manage to say to that.
After I'm finished bandaging his arm, I finally gather the courage to ask him the question that's been on my mind ever since I learned about the attack.
"Was Liam with you?"
He nods in response, lost in thought.
"Is he okay?" My voice comes out low after he doesn't offer any more information regarding him.
Sensing my worry, he immediately snaps his head towards me.
"Yes, yes. Our Alpha is a great warrior. You don't have to worry about him," he says with a grin and relief rushes over me almost instantly. "Last I heard, he was questioni—"
He is cut off by someone calling out my name. I could recognise that voice anywhere now. I turn around to find Liam standing at the door, looking distraught. His face floods with relief as soon as his eyes lay on me.
"April," he almost whispers as we walk towards each other and he pulls me into his chest. He buries his head into my neck and takes a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. I wrap my arms around him, inhaling his intoxicating scent.
"I'm so glad you're okay," he breathes and kisses my forehead.
"Me? You're the one that was in a fight with rogues," I exclaim, pulling back a little, and inspect him for any injuries. Besides a few small cuts and bruises here and there, he seems to be alright. There is blood on his shirt but it doesn't belong to him.
"I was so worried." I let out a nervous chuckle and punch his arm lightly.
He gives me a huge smile in return and pulls me to his side, placing his hand around my waist, as he turns to face the Head Warrior.
"Everything under control here, Cole?"
"Yes, Alpha. Most of the warriors had minor injuries. Ezra and Kelly had to undergo surgery but they are doing good, as well," he replies. "Was there any progress with the captured rogue?"
"About that. Go and see Jason and he will get you up to speed. I need to talk to April."
My heart immediately sinks at the sound of that. What could possibly be more important than talking to his subordinates about the attack?
"Is everything okay?" I ask Liam once Cole has left, unable to hide the worry in my voice.
"Yes. Let's just go home first and then we'll talk."
I nod and we both turn to leave. Throughout the way, Liam has me pulled close to him and his grip around my waist doesn't ease until we reach back home. He asks me to wait and goes upstairs to clean himself up. I take the time to change out of my work clothes as well and slip into black tights and a T-shirt.
I return downstairs and wait for Liam in the living room. He arrives a few minutes later. His hair is still wet from the shower and he is wearing a black T-shirt and sweatpants. He sits down next to me and pulls me towards him.
His eyes never leave mine as he pushes my hair behind my ear, his fingers trailing down, softly caressing the skin on my neck, sending a shiver through me. He places his head in the crook of my neck and inhales my scent deeply.
"What's going on, Liam? You're freaking me out," I manage to breathe out.
He pulls his head away and his eyes meet mine. They are filled with worry as he looks at me. He cups my face in his palm and gently rubs his thumb on my cheek, turning it scarlet.
"They came for you, April," he almost whispers. "I don't know what I would have done if they had managed to take you away from me." His grey eyes swirl with sadness and anger.
"What are you talking about?" I ask confused.
"The rogues. He told me they were here for you. They weren't planning on attacking. If our warriors hadn't come across them in the woods, they would've waited until they found you alone and captured you."
"But why?"
"The same reason why Daxton wanted you. But why he would go through so much trouble for it, I still don't understand. Sending wolves into a pack's territory is a huge risk."
"Do you really think it was Daxton?" I question.
"I don't know. According to the prisoner, they were all brought together by a wolf that claimed he could get them accepted into a pack if they worked together for this task. He said he did not know who it was but he was an Alpha so they believed him. He had a potion with him that helped them cover their scents so they could easily get into our pack territory," he explained.
"I called Alpha Price to tell him if it is a war he wants, then a war he will get. But he has denied having anything to do with this."
"So what's the plan now," I ask him.
"I've doubled the warriors patrolling the perimeter and sent out a few to check the surrounding areas for any suspicious activity. Besides that, there are going to be two guards with you wherever you go," he commands.
"What? Really?" I exclaim. "Do they have to," I whine.
"Yes. There is no point debating it," he states flatly. "And I want you to come training with me so you can learn to defend yourself."
"Okay," I say nervously.
"Really?" His eyes widen in shock. "I didn't expect you to agree so easily."
"Well, I don't have a death wish, Liam," I say with a laugh. "I'm just sorry you had to go through so much trouble for me," I mumble.
He pulls me into a hug and rests his chin on my head.
"I don't think you realise that I would do anything for you, April."
