Chapter 16
Diamond sat, patiently waiting. Her husband had no idea where she was, and she wanted it to stay that way until she'd gotten through with her sudden moment of madness. It was gnawing at her, and she could only hope that it would work out.
It was chilly outside as Greer arrived at the location she'd received from Diamond. It was two in the morning, and she hadn't thought twice when the text came through with her presence being requested.
If anything, she was more nervous about seeing Luis again.
Just as she stepped out of the car, a luxury sedan pulled up. Luis Babineaux stepped out of the vehicle, exuding power as he always had. She sucked in a sharp breath, still surprised at the hold the man had on her.
She may have worked things out with her husband, and she may love him dearly, but there will always be something about Luis that Hamish just doesn't have.
Luis laid eyes on the love of his life and he felt all the emotions rushing through him at the sight of her slight blush. He wanted to believe that she was blushing at the sight of him after so many years, but he knew that it was probably just the cold weather.
"Greer," he said softly as he stood before her.
"She said to meet her here. I don't know why, especially given the time, but I don't care. I already care about her," she said sternly.
He frowned. "You don't even know if she's ours or not."
"I do not care Luis. She's been through a lot," she said.
"What does that mean?" he questioned.
"We should probably find her," she instead suggested.
"Greer," he said, stopping her from leaving.
She grabbed her hand from his. "I'm not doing this with you Luis. This isn't about us."
He could only sigh as he watched her walk away. If there's one thing he regrets in his life, it's not fighting for her, simply because no woman has ever matched up to her. He'd tried and failed miserably to move on.
He followed after her, anxious about their reason for being there. When she'd called him to say that she may have found their daughter, he dropped everything to come and see for himself, only to arrive and have her tell him that he needed to be patient as they'd had a DNA test done.
He could only guess that the results of the test had come back.
His anxiety grew when they spotted a young woman in the distance. From Greer's reaction, he figured that the young woman was possibly his daughter, and for a second time that night, the emotions rushed through him, almost overwhelming him.
Unlike Greer, who had Hamish's comfort at the time, he's had no one. No one knows the pain that he's been through over the years. The pain comes in the form of losing both his daughter and Greer, from losing his family's respect, and for feeling like a failure.
Even if his track record would show otherwise.
To the world, Luis Babineaux is a respected businessman and politician in France, having boosted the Babineaux name even more than the recognition that it had. He'd done a lot for his family over the years, despite their broken relations.
Notwithstanding the moments when he didn't feel like being a Babineaux to begin with.
Diamond looked up to see the two people approaching her. She could see the apprehension on Greer's face, but it was the familiarity of angst that she was noting in the man's eyes that she was focused on.
She'd done her homework, so she knew all about Greer Wellington and Luis Babineaux. She knew of the lives they'd both lived, but she'd also picked up on the differences, so she knew that not only did she have to handle this situation delicately, but that she had to protect all parties involved.
"Breathe dad," she told him when they were close enough to her.
Greer and Luis' eyes widened. "Dad?"
She nodded. "The DNA tests came back. Greer is my mother, which can only mean that you're my father."
Silence settled on them as Diamond watched her parents carefully. She herself had barely wrapped her mind around the whole thing. Xavier had revealed the truth to her and she cried. She cried herself to sleep, only to wake up at midnight with her husband asleep beside her.
She left their bed and headed to their office to conduct her research on her parents. Wanting to meet up with them hit her when she realized that not only was she overwhelmed, but that they were the two people who would probably understand what she was going through.
She didn't expect them to actually pitch up given the time.
A million thoughts were going through Greer's mind. She'd dreamt of this moment for the longest time. There was a point in her life where she'd started to get so lost in her daydreaming of this day, that she paid no attention to her own family.
She was depressed and just wanted her daughter back.
Unlike her, Luis' mind was blank as he stared at his little girl. He'd also dreamt of this day, despite being told to forget about his 'dead child'. He'd always believed that she was somewhere in the world, alive.
What he never truly imagined was ever finding her.
"I found out a few hours ago and I cried myself to sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night and I called you both over here because I'm freaking out and I'm overwhelmed, and the two of you are the only people that I thought would understand what I'm going through, though I wasn't sure if you had already arrived or not," Diamond said, directing the last part of her statement to Luis.
"My baby," Greer finally whispered, tears in her eyes.
Diamond felt her own tears rushing to her eyes as she whispered. "Mom."
The two women embraced each other tightly while Luis watched on, still stunned. He was getting lost in not knowing what to feel because he was feeling it all at once. He was going through memories and what ifs all at once, and was pulled out of it by his daughter wrapping her arms around him.
It took him seconds before he found his own arms tightly winding around her as his brain was finally convinced that she truly was in his arms and that the moment they were in was very much real.
Diamond had embraced her mother, but it was embracing her father that was more emotional for her. She related to him on a much deeper level simply because she'd easily picked up that not only was he not a happy man, but that he'd lived an empty and lonely life.
Even with all his riches and fame.
She wouldn't know how she knew, aside from the fact that in a whole lot of the pictures she'd seen of him, she'd identified the emptiness in his eyes that she often found staring back at her when she looked in the mirror before she met Xavier.
On top of that, everything she found on him was business related and it was reported that he didn't have much of a personal life. Judging from his lack of photos with family members, she guessed that there was some tension there just based off of the little bit that Greer had told her about him.
Greer watched them, and for the first time since Diamond disappeared, she saw it- the pain in Luis' eyes. She'd been so mad then that she cut him off completely. Her family stayed with her and comforted her, and she never once bothered to check up on him or keep up with news related to his family.
Except in that moment, she regretted her decision.
The Babineaux's had caused her a lot of pain, however Luis' only crime was that he loved her, but just didn't commit to her. She knew that he loved her deeply, and as she stood, watching him cry as he held onto their daughter, she understood that Diamond had just become his entire life in that moment.
Based on what Diamond had been through, she knew that the foundation of their bond would be built on the familiar pain that they share.
Diamond pulled away and Luis reached out to wipe away her tears. She smiled a little before reaching out to do the same for him. She reached her hand out to Greer, who accepted it, before she held Luis' hand with her other one.
"What does this mean for us?" she asked them.
"Like I told you before, I want to be in your life. I never want to miss a moment from this day forth," Greer said passionately.
"I agree with your mother. This is the greatest day of my life. I'm so sorry that I ever gave up on you Diamond," Luis told her, his French accent slightly strong, but she still understood him.
"Mom already told me the story, though I'd like to hear it from you as well. However, right now, in this moment, I just want to forget the past and move on with you guys in my future. I have a dark past, but I'd like to think that I'm at a point in life where I have passed that darkness. I have a new job, I am happily married and we're looking to start a family. Having you both in my life will definitely be the cherry on a very sweet cake that I'm starting to enjoy," Diamond told them.
"I'm definitely not going anywhere. Nothing and no one will ever keep me from you," Luis said confidently.
He was tired of having everyone have a say in how he should live his life.
Greer sighed. "I need to talk to Hamish and we need to find a way to break this to your siblings."
"What about the press?" Diamond questioned.
She wasn't ready to think about the possibility of not being accepted by her siblings, especially since Katherine had already looked down on her. She was yet to meet Marcellus, but from what she'd read about him, he isn't the nicest person to be around.
A big part of her wondered if he and Katherine turned out the way that they did because of the impact her disappearance probably had on Greer and Hamish.
"Like I said before, nothing and no one is keeping me away from you, so I care not for the press," Luis responded.
Greer shot him a look. "What about your family? They're not going to handle this well."
He shrugged. "And I do not care. I have suffered for twenty-four years over losing my only child, and to find out that she's alive is a miracle on its own. I do not care about anything else than being in her life."
"I'll have to wait and see what Hamish says about this, but I'm confident that he'll be on the same page now that you're adamant that you don't care if your family finds out or not," Greer commented.
"Can I ask that Xavier and I handle this?" Diamond requested.
"Are you sure?" Greer asked her.
She nodded. "I finally had the courage to look up the articles written about our wedding and marriage and what people had to say about it, and while it isn't particularly positive or negative, there is an air of curiosity where I'm concerned. I've just found out that my mother is a well-known heiress, wife to a well-known businessman and a socialite, while my father is a well-known and respected businessman and politician with ties to the French monarch. I am the result of an affair, except that's the last thing I want to be known as. As it is, I still have to build my own image up away from just being Xavier Kingston's wife. The last thing I need is for Greer Wellington and Luis Babineaux's lovechild to stick as well. Xavier is the only person who I trust to lead me into truly dealing with this in a way where none of us really suffer destruction, though I imagine I can't save your reputations from taking a knock if the entire truth is revealed."
"Sweetheart, you're the one who was failed, therefore you're the only one who deserves to shine here. Your mother and I have accepted the mistakes we made, and in the same way, we will accept them coming to light. People will look at us differently, but I'm sure I speak for Greer as well when I say that we don't care about what they think. At this point in time, you're the only person that matters," Luis said strongly.
"Your father is right Diamond. You let us deal with our reputations and don't worry about us. We're just ecstatic to have you in our lives," Greer added.
Diamond found herself hugging them both. Growing up, she never imagined a situation where she would ever meet her parents. She was sure that she'd die alone, and when she married Xavier, she was happy with the new family that she'd gained.
But this felt different.
Knowing that she was in the arms of her biological parents brought her a peace she didn't even know she sought as tears rushed to her eyes. She hugged them tighter, imprinting that moment into her memories.
She just wanted to never forget what it felt like.
Xavier woke up to find himself alone in the bed. He was confused and got up to search for his wife. When he realized that she wasn't in the penthouse, he panicked and rushed to the parking lot to check if she'd taken any of his cars, only to find them all there.
"Xav, it's four in the morning. I don't have to be up until the next hour," Emery complained as she picked up her phone.
"She's gone Emery. I don't know where she went, but she's gone," Xavier's panicked voice came through.
Emery sat up, suddenly wide awake. "What do you mean she's gone? Why would she leave?"
Xavier was back in the penthouse, pacing. "The DNA results came back. She is Greer's missing child after all. She cried herself to sleep and I joined her hours later. I just woke up now to find her gone. She didn't take any of my cars and her phone is off."
"Have you tried calling Kenny?" she asked as she got up. Everett slowly woke up from hearing her speak.
"I was about to do that just now. I thought I should start with you," he said.
"I'm on my way there. Call Kenny and we'll think of something together," she suggested.
"Alright! See you," Xavier replied before hanging up.
He called Kenny and asked him to come over. While he and Diamond had returned from their honeymoon, they hadn't really gotten around to seeing everyone in their lives, much less talking to them about anything, so Kenny wasn't sure why he was being called in at four in the morning.
"What's going on?" was the first thing he asked when Xavier opened the door.
"Diamond's missing," Xavier said the words he never thought would leave his mouth.
"What? How is that possible?" Kenny panicked.
"I need to tell you something," Xavier said, leading him to the lounge.
He let him in on the whole Wellington saga, and Kenny was astonished. He couldn't even begin to imagine what was going through Diamond's mind. He'd asked her before if she ever wanted to try and find her biological parents, and she had said no. At the time, she was just happy with having Kenny in her life.
But he knew that it had to do with fear more than anything.
"Since she was crying, I don't know what's going on in her head. I can't even say I know where she could've possibly gone," Xavier said frustratingly.
"I don't think we should panic just as yet. She probably just headed out because she needed to breathe and take everything in. She's street smart, so she won't put herself in any dangerous situations," Kenny offered.
Xavier sighed. "I guess. I'm just so worried about her. I don't think I was ready for those results either. It's so complicated now because I don't even know how we're going to work around it. We can't exactly expose the whole thing without jeopardizing reputations."
"Maybe talk to her about it and find out where she stands on the whole thing. She's the most important person in this," Kenny reminded.
"I'm not disputing that at all. My greatest worry here is that she's already been through so much, and I don't know how this will affect her. Hell, I'm worried about Greer and Luis' parts in this. I don't want my wife to face any more heartbreak. I just, I wish I could shield her from every bad thing in this world," Xavier said desperately.
Kenny smiled a little. "As happy as it makes me to hear you say that, I understand better than anyone that Dee wouldn't want that. Just be there for her and let her handle everything in the way she chooses to."
Xavier was about to say something when the front door opened. He heard voices and he stood up just as Diamond walked into the lounge with her parents. When she saw the distress in his eyes, she ran to him and he wrapped his arms around her tightly, kissing her forehead.
"I was so worried," he mumbled.
She looked up guiltily. "I'm sorry. I just, I needed to do this."
"And what is this exactly?" he questioned.
She smiled, taking his hand in hers before dragging him over to her parents. "Honey, I'd like to introduce you to some very important people. These are my parents Greer and Luis. Mom, dad, this is my husband Xavier Kingston."
Greer laughed a little. "I already know him."
"Just go with it," Diamond scolded.
Luis chuckled. "This isn't exactly the point in time when a father wants to meet the man in his daughter's life. He missed the grilling bit."
"Does it help that I grilled him?" Kenny spoke up.
Diamond seemed to only notice him then as she beamed. "Kenny! What are you doing here?"
"Xav was worried about you, so he called me over and explained everything," Kenny informed as he stood up.
"Parents, this is my adopted brother Kenny Wallace. Kenny, these are my biological parents, Greer and Luis," Diamond introduced.
"It's lovely to meet you both. I don't know if the same can be said for Xav over here," Kenny teased, noting the confusion on his brother in law's face.
"I'm sorry. I'm just, puzzled," Xavier admitted.
"It's my fault. I woke up and called them to meet me in the park. I was overwhelmed and I thought it made sense to share the feelings with the two people who I knew would understand what I was going through," Diamond explained.
Xavier scowled, and Greer picked up on the problem. "It doesn't mean she doesn't trust you Xavier."
Xavier turned to her. "That's not what's bothe-"
"It is. You thought you'd be the first person that she turned to with this, and you're not wrong for thinking that. You're her husband and you've been her pillar over the past couple of weeks. It's natural for you to have expected it," Greer interrupted him.
"Like I said, I'm just confused, especially with how the three of you seem to have connected," Xavier argued.
"She called us to meet her at the park two hours ago. While we haven't delved into the heavy stuff, we're on the same page in terms of moving forward," Luis told him.
"And that is?" Xavier asked protectively, something that made them smile.
"They both want to be in my life Xav. They don't want to hurt me in any way," Diamond told him.
"And what exactly is the way forward here?" he asked.
Greer smiled. "You're the only person Diamond trusts with coming up with a plan on the way forward. Both Luis and I are on board with anything, reputations aside, so don't worry about us. I'm sure the two of you will talk about it once you have a moment alone."
"You want me to handle this?" Xavier asked his wife, surprised.
She nodded. "You're my husband. You're the one who has to deal with all my moods and nightmares. You're the one I open up to in the middle of the night. You're the one who holds and comforts me while I cry in your arms. You're the one who I know would not only do anything for me, but would handle this situation in the most strategic way."
"Kenny could do the same thing and he's your brother. He's known you longer," Xavier argued.
"Yeah no, I wouldn't be able to solve this. I love Dee to death, but this is your specialty man. Besides, there are some things that only you will ever know about her, and things that only you will ever know how to handle. I see what you're trying to do, and I'm grateful that you would consider including me, but this is on you. I'll be there for any part that you need me for, but if she wants you to handle this, be her hero and do just that," Kenny told him, simultaneously impressing everyone in the room.
Diamond smiled and went to hug him. "I could never thank you enough for saving my life Ken."
"Except you have, and I don't want you to anymore. You're my sister and I love you. Having you in my life has made it better and you guys are my family, so always remember that you don't owe me anything but love," Kenny joked.
"Now love I can definitely do," Diamond laughed before the front door opened again. Emery, Everett and Macy walked in seconds later.
"You're back!" Emery said in relief, going over to hug her best friend.
"We came as soon as we could. We picked up Macy on the way, but it would seem we didn't need to," Everett commented.
"What's going on?" Diamond asked them.
"Xav called. He was worried," Emery informed her.
Diamond scowled, turning to her husband. "Were you that worried?"
He looked at her, deadpan. "Is it really thatsurprising?"
"I guess not. I really am sorry. I didn't mean to make you worry so much," she apologized. An awkward mood settled onto the room.
Luis laughed a little. "Well, I don't know about anyone else, but to me, seeing my son in law like this is relieving because I at least know that my daughter is in good hands."
"Son in law?"
"Daughter?"
Diamond laughed a little. "Mom, dad, meet my best friend Emery Applegate, her fiancé, my friend and Xavier's best friend Everett Holmes, and my sister in law Macy Kingston. Guys, meet my parents Greer Wellington and Luis Babineaux."
"Parents?" the three of them said in confusion.
Xavier sighed. "Look, it's a story for another time, even if it's later on today. I'm sure you're all aware that this is an awkward time to be having this discussion."
"I think I have an idea that's going to make my mother in law very happy, but for now, my husband is right. We will definitely have this talk though," Diamond commented.
"Well then, I should probably get back to my hotel room," Greer said.
"Same here," Luis added.
"I'll talk to you guys later," Diamond said as she hugged them.
"Well alright then. Are you coming in to work?" Everett asked Xavier.
Xavier shook his head. "I'll work from here. Emery, please move my meetings to Thursday. If Thursday is too busy, just s-"
"Squeeze them in where I can- I know the drill Xav," Emery laughed.
"That's my job though," Diamond pointed out.
"And you will get back to it on Thursday," Xavier replied. She was about to argue, but the look on his face stopped her.
"Well then, I guess we will wait for whatever grand plan you have and hear from you at a later time," Kenny said, closing off all discussions.
Everyone said their goodbyes and while Diamond walked her parents to the door, Xavier headed to their bathroom to start his shower. He wasn't sure where his thoughts were, so he figured he could start to process them after a shower.
It wasn't long before his wife joined him under the water. His back was rigid, and she figured that something was heavy on his mind. She kissed his back and he turned to face her. She caressed his cheek and he grabbed her hand and kissed her palm.
"What are you thinking about?" she asked him.
He turned off the water. "Many things."
"I thought I was the one who was supposed to have many thoughts," she joked with a small smile.
"I'm processing love. My overprotective side needs to make sense of everything," he explained.
"I love that you love me so deeply," she confessed.
"I will always love you Diamond. You are the most important person to me," he stated.
She smiled fully. "As are you to me. I'm ready Xavier."
He frowned. "Ready for what?"
"I'm ready for you to make love to me."
