Sam's P.O.V
I was sharping my knives when Jillian come walking over. He looked like he had something on his mind. He had that look for a week now. I tried to ask what was troubling him but he told me that he would tell me when he has make a decision on what King Finley has put on his shoulders. I knew it was big news because Jillian has had a lot of meetings with the other rangers in our regions of our home. So I have been training nonstop with my knives and my bow and arrows. I have also been riding Hickory, my black ranger horse, every day. I had a feeling this will be a battle we had to fight in. There was always a war going on these days.
Jillian sat next to me and said," King Finley says that the neighbouring kingdom needs help with the war that they will get into."
"Really?" I asked.
"Yes, he wants all of the rangers, their apprentices, and his best warriors are going to go meet up with the kings and queen of Narnia," Jillian explained," We leave tomorrow, so call it a early night and get some sleep because you, a few warriors, and I are going to this meeting."
"Okay," I said, putting away my weapons and going inside.
The next day
Jillian, me, and a few warriors including my best friend, Frederick were riding to the meeting of Jillian's choice. He wanted me to show the kings and queens of Narnia what a ranger was and why they needed us in their war. It made you mad early this morning when Jillian said that the young king didn't think that us ranger were what they needed. He wrote King Finley they would take the warriors, but he didn't know us rangers were like.
So, Jillian wanted me to get to the meeting spot earlier than everyone. I was covering my face with my hood, as I was waiting for both groups to show up. I had my bow and arrow ready in the branch above them. I was waiting for the right moment to shoot my arrow in the tree behind the young king's head. I was focusing on not hitting the young king.
"My kings and queens, I just want to say that King Finley has agreed to send all of his rangers, our apprentices, and best warriors to help you fight this new threat on your land," said Jillion.
"I'm High King Peter, this is Just King Edmund, Queen Susan, and Queen Lucy and how can your rangers fight Lord Thomas' ( I made up a new villain for this story) big army?" asked King Peter.
"Yeah, we've never heard of these rangers before," said Edmund," How do we know you are any good?"
"Edmund, be nice," said Susan
"Susan, I was just curious," said Edmund.
As Jillion and everyone were talking, I tried to slowed my breathing down and focus on the words don't see us coming, to release my arrow.
"While our warriors will be down on the battlefield with your army, us ranger and our apprentices can get in and out of Lord Thomas' army base and he wouldn't know we were there until it was too late," explained Jillion," We work within in the shadows and that is why King Finley has kept us under wraps."
"Why the secrecy?" asked Edmund.
"A lot of people who tried to fight for King Finley lands, only spoke of us as a shadow in the night because you don't see us coming until you are dead," explained Jillion, grinning.
I shoot my arrow just as King Edmund moved around, missing his head by a meter. Edmund dropped to the ground and looked at the arrow in the tree. I jumped down still with my hood covering my face.
"The guy tried to kill Edmund," said Susan, as she helped Edmund up.
"What's the big idea here?" asked King Peter, pointing his sword at Jillian.
The people that were with the kings and queens had their weapons pointed at me. I just laughed at them. People pointing weapons at me don't scared me as much as it should. As an apprentice ranger, situations like this doesn't show fear in us.
"My apprentice was just showing you what us rangers are like," Jillion explained," Us rangers will be a force Lord Thomas will never see coming."
"That arrow could have killed me," King Edmund.
"Young man, you need to apologized for that," said Susan.
I took off my hood and explained," One, I'm a woman and two, if I wanted him dead, he would be because I never miss my target."
King Edmund was starring at me. I didn't like it when men starring at me. I don't like the dirty looks that Edmund was giving me. I'm tired of dealing with guys like him. I will knock him on his butt if he tries anything.
"I'm getting my horse and leaving back to the others," I told Jillian.
I whistle for my horse and my small horse come running next to me.
"Is that what you call a horse?" asks Edmund, laughing, " That's not going to help in any battle, it looks more like a big, gigantic dog."
"Yes, well, our horses are different than yours," I told him.
"How?" asked Lucy.
"Why didn't I see for myself?" asked Edmund, as he walked up to my horse.
"I won't do that," I said, as Edmund gets on my horse.
"Nothing bad is going to happen," replies Edmund.
"Not yet," I told him, laughing.
I watched my horse's muscle move to jump a few feet in the air and throws Edmund a few feet away. I laughed as I calmed my horse down.
"The different between our horses is they don't talk and can't be stolen because only a ranger could ride them," I explained, as Peter helped Edmund up.
I whispered in my horse's ear if it was okay to get on him. He nodded and I got on. I looked at Edmund and smirked.
"Now if you don't mind, I'm going to go back the camp and tell everyone that we are going to where these kings and queen are staying for the battle," I explained.
"We are set up a little west of here," said King Peter.
"We'll meet you there," said Jillian.
I ride off and away from Edmund rudeness. I knew that there would be a problem with him in the future but I wasn't going to let him get in the way of the upcoming battle and getting my silver leaf and becoming a ranger like my mom did. She was a great ranger before dieing a few years ago. I wanted to follow in her footsteps and do something great with my life. I just wished she told me who my father was, but every time I wanted to talk about it. She would just say that he was a great warrior and he died before she told him she was pregnant with me. I just going to work hard to make a name for myself. And I wasn't going to let Edmund or anyone else stand in my way of that.
Jillian's P.O.V
"What is her problem?" Edmund asked, as we were riding to our battlefield.
"Things have been kind of hard for her for years," I tod them.
"Like what?" asked King Peter.
"Yeah, I really shouldn't tell you four her life story," I explained.
"Why not?" Edmund asks.
"Because the last time her best friend tried to tell me anything about her past, she got so angry and house round kick him and knocked him out," I explained," That was reason I wanted her as my apprentice. "
"Because she kicked someone unconscious, you made her your apprentice?" Edmund asked," That makes no sense."
"No, it was because she wasn't going to let anyone know anything about her, but herself," I explained," Ranger are very secret with others, it makes it a good trait to have if we get caught by our enemies and they want information from us."
"Seriously?" asked King Peter," But you must know something about her past."
"Of course I do, I've known her since she was born," I answered," Plus, she told me things that no one know about her."
"Do you know how her mother then?" Queen Susan asks.
"I really shouldn't say anything," I told them," Sam will be mad at me."
"Please I really want to know why she was so rude to Edmund," said Susan," We all do."
I sighed and looked at Susan. Sam is going to hate but these kings and queens need to know that Sam meant not harm towards them.
"Fine, if you must know, I was best friends with her mother until her death a few years ago," I explained," Her mother was the best ranger I have ever saw and I promised that I would always be there for Sam."
"That's awful," said Queen Susan, looking upset.
"What about her dad?" asked Queen Lucy.
"Well, it's kind of sad thing, he was one of King Finley's top warriors before one of our enemies took him," I explained.
"Didn't you go after him?" asked King Peter.
"We did but when we got to him, Sam's mom find him dieing from his injuries," I explained," He didn't even know that she was pregnant with Sam until then."
"So, Sam didn't know her father," Queen Susan," That's so sad."
"Every time Sam would bring up her father, Sam's mom would cry and just told her that he was a great warrior," I explained, " Sam was harsh and angry towards our enemy from the north and it really didn't help with her mother dieing a few years ago, so I just want to apologize for any angry she may show to any of you."
"She would really be like that?" asked Edmund.
"Wouldn't you be a little angry and upset if you lose someone close to you?" I asked.
"I guess," answered Edmund.
"Just don't let her know I told any of you what I told you about her past," I said," I really don't want my apprentice mad at me or distracted so close to getting her silver leaf."
"What's a silver leaf?" asked King Peter, looking confused.
I hold up my silver leaf and explained," We wear a metal oak leaf on a necklace, bronze for apprentices, silver for full fledged rangers, and gold for retired rangers."
"How long does it take for an apprentice to be a full fledged ranger?" asked Edmund.
"Five years of hard training," I answered.
"Why so long?" asked Queen Lucy," That seems crazy."
"It's not crazy, rangers are trained at the age fifteen or younger of what it takes to be a ranger with training, battles and missions that endanger our king," I explained.
"And when will Sam get her silver oak leaf?" asked King Edmund.
"I started to train Sam at thirteen and I was going to give it to her after her eighteen birthday," I answered," I want it to be a surprise in a couple of days."
"Her birthday is coming up and she's going to fight in this war for us?" asked King Edmund.
"She will most likely say it's just another day and focus on being the best ranger like her mother," I explained.
As we get closer to their battlefield, I didn't say anything else about Sam.
"Come on, why aren't you answering our questions about Sam and her birthday and the war coming up?" King Edmund asked.
"Because that's something you can ask her yourself," I told him, getting off my horse.
They showed us where they were staying underground. It was okay, but Sam was shooting death glances at King Edmund as Frederick was talking to her. It had me a little worried.
Sam's P.O.V
Frederick was talking to me after we get underground. I thought it was a good place to talk about what we were going to plan for this battle.
"Hey, are you even listening to me?" Frederick asked.
"Something about you fighting or something," I guessed.
"I was talking about Phillip," he said.
He was telling about a warrior guy that he likes and how they flirt back and forth on and off again for months since he become an apprentice warrior years ago. I thought it was stupid to like someone these days. I'm not going to do that when war and deaths are all that I'm used to. I don't want to get close to someone and end up losing them to death.
"Oh, right," I replied.
"You would know that if you wasn't eyeing King Edmund," Frederick explained," You like him, didn't you?"
"What makes you think that?" I asked.
"Because all you have said since coming back from meeting them is how rude and disrespect King Edmund is," answered Frederick.
I went to get my recurve bow and arrows from my pack on Hickory.
"It's okay to like someone, you know," said Frederick.
"Yeah and look where that got my mom and dad," I told him," Or the last guy that I liked."
"That's not going to happen to you again," said Frederick, " Besides, I think he would be perfect for you."
"Well, I'm not going to let anyone distract me from becoming a great ranger," I told him.
I looked at Edmund and he was talking to Jillian. I sighed and looked back at Frederick.
"Not even, a stupid, spoiled brat of a king like Edmund," I explained," I've trained too hard for five years to let it all go for some boy."
"Come on, not once have you had a break and had a little fun," said Frederick.
I love Frederick to death but he won't stop trying to get me to have a little fun in my life. I sighed.
"Maybe after all my hard work and training pays off and I become a ranger, then I'll think of having a relationship with someone," I explained," Speaking of training, I'm going to go do that."
"Sam, can we talk?" asked Edmund.
"Not now, maybe later," I told him," I have some practicing to do before it gets dark."
"Okay," said Edmund.
I really don't want to deal with Edmund right now. I just wanted to practice my training for the upcoming battle. I have been shooting for hours. It always calm me down when I'm focused on shooting arrows at different targets. I felt like someone was watching as I was getting my arrows out their targets. I looked around and saw this bush move.
I moved into the shadows and sneak up on the stranger. I jump in front of him and pushed him into the tree behind. I saw the fear in his eyes as I put my Saxe knife to his throat.
"You?" I asked," Why are you watching me for?"
**************************
Sorry that I left it at a cliff hanger. Who did Sam catch watching? Is he or she a threat to her group or a friend? Read to find out. I hope you guys like this chapter. I'll tried to write the next chapter tomorrow, but no promises. I'll try to write as much as I could but I have some personal things going on in my life that I keep me crazy, but I'll keep writing when I have a moment to sat, relax, and write.
