As The World Comes To An End
I can't believe I forgot her again. My head broke the surface and sucked in sweet air. I carried the two unconscious Ice-claws to the only island in the whole lake. Zara pulled the soaked Khan up next to them.
"Listen Zach, down there, I think I saw the Fyreflower" she said
"Really?" I gasped
She nodded "yeah, but it's guarded by all the creatures in the lake"
"How do we get around them?" I asked
"I don't know, I don't know how to get these three awake either" she said
We looked at them for a few moments, the chests moving up and down ever so slightly.
"What!! you're supposed to be dead!" Gorbachav suddenly interrupted my thoughts
My head snapped upwards, he was bearing over us, but something seemed to stop him from coming closer, an invisible force.
"Why can't I touch you? what magic is this?!" he shrieked
"It's mine!" a new voice said from across the lake
Xanthos was hovering in mid-air, his great white wings lighting up the whole room.
"Stay away from my friends!" he said
Gorbachav laughed "you wouldn't dare hurt your father"
Xanthos created a ball of light out of thin air "you're not my father" he said, and hurled it at Gorbachav
Gorbachav staggered back as it hit him, then fired a beam of darker plasma at his son. A link suddenly sprang up between them. A chain of light and dark.
"Go! get the flower!" Xanthos yelled
"Let's do what he says" I said and dived back under water.
Zara followed me and gestured for me to follow her. We swam for a while till I saw what she said was the Fyreflower. It just hovered in the darkness, spreading light in the far reaches of the beyond. A lily of light, a flower of fortune, a plant of power.
I started swimming towards it but Zara grabbed me and yanked me back. I looked at her confused, and she pointed with her paws into the darkness. A pair of gleaming eyes glared at us from the darkness. I gasped at bubbles shot up towards the surface. The eyes got distracted for a few seconds before focusing on us again.
I had an idea.
I looked at Zara and gave her a look that said, did you see that? She nodded, but there was something wrong with expression. I started to swim below the Fyreflower, but she placed her paw on my shoulder, and the link sprang up between us again.
:What if this doesn't work?:
:It will, you have to be brave: I said to her
:I don't know if I can do this:
:Come on, remember, you can't let your fears control you, I need you to be brave, so that I can be brave, you're my Lionheart:
Then the link flickered and died, but Zara was now bursting with a new courage. We floated below the Fyreflower and took in a deep breath, then let it out as air. The gargantuan bubble rose slowly to the surface, and every monster clustered around it. I shot forward and snagged it's roots in my claws. We swam we shore, I leaped out of the water and started stroking my wings through the air. Zara launched herself up in front of me. I started to follow her when a huge fish sprang out of the lake. Suddenly everything moved in slow motion, I was flying as hard as I could, I could see it's teeth gleaming from the light cast from the battle between father and son. It's huge red eyes glaring at me, my paws weren't quick enough. It's jaws closed around the only known thing to cure ghost-cough.
And it fell back into the dark and dreary water.
I screamed out into the air, I needed to go back, to get the cure. Zara held me back and we landed. Nothing mattered to me right now, only that we had failed, everyone was going to die.
