"It's easier to move on from someone you don't know than to let go of the one who owns your heart and soul."

I hate hospitals. Of all things I have seen and done, this is the worst,  gut-retching feeling. Sitting here, waiting, for fuck knows how long, for someone to mumble some words, which have no significant meaning.  Not even to mention the smell of carbolic acid, mixed with the distracting scent of flowers.

Pack members were scattered around me, some even tried to engage in conversation. My mind was just too clouded to listen to them. Being the Alpha is not always as great as people may think, being the Alpha King, is even worse. You're never allowed to look weak, you are to be strong. At all times.

My thoughts drifted to her, what happened?  Will she be okay? Is that just too much to ask? But most of all, I want to know the basics. Not long medical terms, not empty promises, and no pathetic looks of pity.

Just a simple question in a hospital, gets you thousand medical term answers. Which I don't even understand.

"Lily is with Bella and Cole. I told them to watch her for today." William announced as he placed his hand on my shoulder. He insisted on staying here, waiting.

"Thank you, William," I said, my voice full of emotion as I try to contain myself.

"How long do you plan on waiting here?" he asked, taking a seat next to me.

"Forever, if I have to," I said, my heart clenched at the thought. How will I make it without her?

The defining sound of silence crept up between us again. There was not really much to say, but then I remembered, the William who once lived in a dark place. The William who lost his mate, without even knowing her, he lost her.

"How did you do it?" I asked. William rarely talks about her, about what he went through.

"Do what?" he said, but I could see it in his eyes. He knew what I meant. His eyes pleading me to just drop it.

"You know what I'm talking about, William."  He looked a bit taken back by my question, his eyes filled with emotion as he looked away from me, towards the long, busy hall.

"It's easier to move on from someone you don't know than to let go of the one who owns your heart and soul," he said, turning back to face me. All I saw in his eyes was regret.

William blamed himself for months, it took him years just to function again. But he survived and became stronger. She was killed right outside our border, the call that day came sudden and unexpected. Cole just linked us and said that rogues were attacking. That call, that day changed him.

That was six years ago. William was first on the scene that day, it was like his soul left his body, remaining nothing but an empty shell.

"Sorry, William. I truly am." I said, trying my best not to dwell on the topic anymore.

"Not your fault." The heartbreak in his voice was quickly composed when one of the pack nurses approached us.

The elderly lady was one of the best the pack had to offer, she has been with us for more than 40 years, her knowledge, skills, and care for patients were above and beyond any other. She lived for her patients.

"Do you have any news for me, Valarie?" I asked her, I looked into her chocolate brown eyes as the emotions came to light. She shook her head and gave me a slight smile.

"Doctor Green asked to talk to you privately, Alpha."

I knew from the start Doctor Green was the best option for her. He helped her in the beginning and I knew he would again. Besides, I refused to have their friend, Doctor, or watever, anywhere near her at the moment.

All I wanted was to know if she will be okay, I can deal with the rest later.

'Trouble is coming. I can feel it.' Zane's voice echoed in my head. I chose to, for now at least, shut him out. I need to focus on her now.

"I'll wait here," William said while I walked towards the dreaded room.

I turned to face him, not knowing what to really say, but he already knew.  "Just be there for her," he said.

The door to Doctor Green's office was open, so, naturally, I just walked in, not really caring if I invade his privacy. He gave me a wary smile and signaled me to sit.

It was only once I sat down that I saw the phone in his hands, who is he talking to?

"Very well, thank you." He said, just before he hung up the phone.

"Ah, Alpha. I have so much to tell you." He said all chirpy. What the hell is wrong with him?

"Yes?" I asked, quite annoyed by his ignorant behavior, considering the situation at hand.

"Sorry. This is just related to the Luna."

"Well, if you don't mind. Get to the point." I said annoyed.

He took a seat at his desk and hoarded through the stack of papers on the table. He kept looking at me like that fucken cat in one of Lily's favorite shows.

The fucken cat in the hat.

His lips were twitching as he tried to control the smile on his face. What the hell is wrong with this man? Does he want me to punch him in the face?

Anger flooded through my veins as I clenched my fists. Before I could really say anything, he opened his darn trap again.

"Aha, Yes," he shouted.

'Maybe he had a really good fuck, and his dick is just happy? Just imagine that.' Zane said in my head.

'I don't need any visuals, Zane.'

"Well, I have excellent news, Alpha I have to say tha-" he was about to tell me something when William pushed through my mind link.

"What the hell is the problem, William?"

"It's happening again."

"You must be fucking with me?" I responded, of all the times, they chose now to attack?

"I'm not. Alexander, we need you. NOW!" William shouted.

Well, fuck. Is it too much, to just want one normal day, one day free of crap. I don't know what the Doctor said, I also don't know what to do. I can't leave her here, unprotected.

Shit, Lily.

"William."

"Yes." he linked back.

"Would you and some of the wo-"

"I said yes, Alexander. Cole took Lily with Bella to the safety location." he cut me off.

"Thank you, William."

"East border, some of the warriors and Maxine's already there," he said, cutting off the link.

Great.

'Let's just end this, once and for all. I'm tired of going back and forth like a darn ping-pong ball!' Zane said trying to take control, which I did not fight.

Running outside of the hospital proved to be quite a mission, pack members were running around, terrified. They must have gotten the mind link from Cole.

I hated seeing my pack like this, scared and helpless. It's one of the things that I never want for any member of my pack, they should always feel safe and these idiots are messing with their safety.

Turning back to face the hospital I knew that I can't just leave them like this. There's not many sick in here, but those that are, they need protection.

"William. We need to keep the hospitals safe. Tell the warriors to keep them at bay. They must not enter the second phase of the border!"  I linked William, not caring if he responds back or not.

I turned around and took in the smell of my surroundings, that's when his scent hit me.

"Alpha, does your pack need help?" I turned to face his familiar voice. I gave him a skeptical look of disapproval. I don't have time for this.

"She is my daughter! Allow me to help, please" he said, I could sense his determination to prove himself. I had no choice but to trust him. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, right?

"Come with me, but, I'll give you one warning. Even I cannot stop Zane once he loses himself. Only she can stop the Ripper."

"I understand."

"Let's go, I don't have time to waste." My words barely left my mouth when I catch the scent of Luke.

"I'm coming with. I can help," he claimed.

Fuck this.

"I'll be honest. I don't trust either of you and neither does Zane. I don't have time or patience for this. I need to protect my pack and my mate. So, come along." I said, growling.

"We'll earn it," Marcus said.

Turning back to face the forest, I gave them a knowing look and a growl of approval.

I could feel my bones crack and shift, my knees backed into another direction, my nerves and veins shifted to accommodate my new shape. A few drops of sweat fell from my head as I finally changed into my new form.

My paws gripped the earth firmly, I took a look around me and saw Marcus on my left and Luke to my right. Both in their wolf form, their wolves already had control, it was clear as daylight.

Zane stood stiff-legged, his tail held high, arching over his back, his ears erect, facing forward. The fur on our back bristled, as his lips curled up pulling back, snarling at them.

Their ears were flat down against their heads, they tucked their tails between their legs showing their understanding. A whimpering sound left them, as they both bowed in submission.

He gave another warning growl while snapping at both of them, arching his neck high. He took every second he could to show them who was the real Alpha. Warning them of the price they will pay should they cross him.

Giving a final snarl and crouching backward, he pounced forward running into the forest with them close by.

Hi All. Thank you for being patient, waiting for the next chapter.

I hope you liked it.
