• Chapter 9 •
„You want us to engage the fucking Mexican Army?" Soap exclaimed, confusion and anger making his accent thicker.
In other cases, she wouldpoke fun of his thicker accent, but right now, crouching in front of a window between Soap and Ghost, she reckoned it wasn't the right time.
„Sorry Ale, but you're not lovely enough to get my ass shot by the Mexican Army," Rora retorted, setting the barrel of her rifle against the window sill, ready to fire. She wasn't going to sit here and wait for them, no way. She was going to shoot her way out.
„Hold your fire. We'll dig in until my men are clear," Alejandro cleared, not that it soothed her nerves.
Watching as three or more armored vehicles rolled up, too many soldiers to count emerging from them, all of them ready to kill them.
„Multiple vehicles... Troop transports. Light armor," Ghost added, voice low as he looked through his scope for a better view.
„Is that supposed to be comforting?" she mumbled, her eyes not leaving the closest car, adrenaline flooding her veins, causing her finger to twitch on the trigger.
„Could be worse," he replied under his breath, which came as a surprise to her. Her eyes finally left the car to look his way, seeing the way he positioned himself, getting a clear view of anything under and in front of them, the balaclava and sunglasses disguising any emotion he could feel.
He looked like a statue, a very deadly one. Knowing that he was more than able to break all hell loose, and probably still gain the upper hand, amazed her.
„Hold fire. Let them get close," Alejandro warned, all of them tensing, getting ready to fire upon the unsuspecting Mexican Army.
They waited for them to get closer, each second causing her pulse to go up. The suspense was killing her, waiting out the enemy was never her forte. She liked jumping into fights, literally and figuratively. Guns blazing, grenade in hand, flipping knives through the air – that was her way.
Waiting made her fidgety and anxious.
That was until one of the soldiers spotted them and started to fire upon them, all of them returning the fire in a heartbeat. Rora was quick to take out the enemy, her aim deadly as she fired her rifle, hitting each of them, her eyes franticly scanning over the men that were running at the house.
„Oh, you got to be kidding me!" she yelled over the chaos, frustration booming in her chest. „They have fucking shields!"
„Bloody hell," Soap cursed next to her, shooting at the man with the shield, but it did little to no damage, only causing him to halter in his steps.
Acting out of muscle memory, her hand reached to one of the many grenades on her vest, pulling one off. The act didn't go unnoticed by the man beside her.
„Wells," Ghost warned, his eyes briefly glancing her way, quickly shooting down two more men that wanted to run up to them.
„You said no RPGs, you haven't said anything about grenades!" Rora shot back, pulling out the pin and she brought her arm far back, chucking the grenade out the window with enough force that alone impact would kill somebody.
With sniper, her aim was pretty off, never understood how to use one. But when it came to throwing knives or grenades, her aim was deadly and precise, never missing any target. That was how she managed to throw just behind the man with the shield, him not long after exploding, blood and limbs scattered around the hard ground.
It was such a gruesome scene, but somehow it still managed to make her happy. After all, her aim didn't get worse after those years.
The explosion caused some debris and dust to flood the room, all of them coughing, Rora's eyes watering as the dust managed to get into her eyes.
Maybe this was the reason Ghost didn't want her to throw grenades like it was candy.
She was too occupied with getting the particles out of her eyes to notice that Alejandro and Soap were already darting toward one of the back windows, fleeting the room, since they got the clearings from Rodolfo that they were in the clear.
A hand wrapped around her forearm, pulling her up to her feet, pushing her towards the window the others jumped from. Only being able to see with one of her eye, she still managed to land safely from the one-story jump, only her left ankle feeling a little weird after it, Ghost following close behind her.
„Down the hill! We'll lose them in the mountains!" Alejandro shouted behind his shoulder, leading the way through the rocky ground, jumping down a small ledge.
Rora managed to catch up after Soap, Ghost following behind them.
Rodriguez, one of Alejandro's men spoke some words in the comms, but again, Rora was not skilled enough to understand him, so she just went with the flow and followed behind the men, clutching her rifle close to herself.
„Straight to the bridge," the Colonel answered in English, giving both parties an answer about what the plan was.
The gunfire behind them suddenly became so much closer, Rora didn't even realize how the Mexican Army had caught up with them until one of the many bullets they showered over them didn't hit Rodolfo, parallel to her.
„Rodolfo!" a cry left her throat as she rapidly turned around, returning the fire with her gun, trying to cover for the man. No man gets left behind on her watch.
Ghost was quick to pull the fallen man behind some fallen trunks, giving them cover while he covered for Rora to join them behind a rock.
„You okay?" Rora asked the Vaquero, her blue eyes franticly searching for any blood or bullet wounds.
„Got me in the back plate," Rodolfo groaned as he pulled himself into a crouched position, reaching for the rifle beside him. „I'm fine."
Quickly nodding, her head turned towards Soap, who started shooting from behind a bigger rock, seemingly clear from injuries. Her eyes snapped to Alejandro, hiding behind a tree, and for a brief moment, their eyes met, the Colonel nodding to her as he signaled that he was fine, too.
She didn't even have to ask Ghost, he was undefeatable, basically impossible to hit.
Taking down two other Army men on her own, the rest of them clearing the enemies quickly, the group was quick to collect themselves and head towards their destination. From then on, Rora kept a closer eye on any movement outside their little group.
„You know these trails?" Soap asked as they followed behind Alejandro, him leading them through the thick of the woods on a small, little trail.
„Very well, but so does the army..." he replied, the end of his sentence almost coming off as annoyed.
„We can't hold off an army." Ghost interjected, his voice coming as strong as always from behind her. The fact that he was always at the end, raised some worry in her because this way she couldn't keep her eyes on everyone. But knowing him, he didn't trust her enough to have his back. „We need extraction."
Rora huffed out a breath. Indeed, they needed it, and fast.
Continuing their way through the forest and some enemy fire, they managed to cut through toward the bridge Alejandro had mentioned before. Sweat dripped down her neck, a few dark brown pieces coming loose from her secure bun, sticking to her sweat-covered temple. Her ammo started to run out on her, with only a few clips remaining to her semi-automatic. Adrenaline was pumping through her veins, she was pretty sure that was the only thing that kept her on her legs, keeping her going.
And the fear that Ghost would probably kick her ass to the bridge if her body would just collapse midway.
Her eyes were fixed on the back of Soap's back, getting distracted by her thoughts.
The last time she had to run away from anybody was the time when she and Everett had robbed a gas station, at the bridge of eighteen years old.
They were always dumb, but their dumbness reached another level that night. It was Everett's idea, to rob something that night, but she was the one to decide what should they rob. The gas station was on the edge of the neighborhood, and in their minds, it was an easy target.
Little did they know that the cashier had a quicker reflex than they thought and a whole lot of boldness, throwing a glass of whiskey at Everett, hitting his head pretty hard, and screaming at them that he had already called the police.
„You hear that?" Alejandro's soft voice brought her out of her thoughts and memories, a shiver being the only thing that remained after them.
Rora's forehead creased as she tried to find out what he was talking about, when a similar sound hit her ears, her head tilting back as she looked up to the sky. Through the foliage of the trees, green and luscious, she caught glimpse of a helicopter, her heart dropping to her stomach. It started to look more and more like they weren't going to make it out alive from the forest than she wanted to admit. Their ammo was running out, there were only five of them against a whole ass army, and the army was everywhere.
„Get to the firing position. We'll take them by surprise," Alejandro had ordered, his eyes following the heli above them.
God, I miss my RPG, Rora thought, biting back the sentence, not wanting to anger her lieutenant anymore.
After her little grenade incident, she was surprised that he hadn't pushed her in front of enemy lines so far. Maybe he wanted to wait till they reach the edge of the mountain to push her off the ledge.
„Which way to the bridge?" the said lieutenant asked Alejandro, standing only a few steps away from her. Her eyes scanned over his body, wondering how easy it would be for him to just throw her off a cliff.
„Straight ahead," the Commander motioned towards a small ledge, leading upwards. Soap was the first to climb up, reaching down to help Rora up. She didn't hesitate to accept the arm he reached towards her, him pulling her up beside him with ease. „Past the helo. They'll try to cut us off."
Looking behind her shoulder, she watched as Ghost didn't even struggle to jump after them, looking so effortlessly doing it so. He probably wouldn't even break a sweat by throwing her off a cliff.
„We'll have to go through them," Soap commented beside her.
„Just what I missed today," Rora muttered under her breath, pulling her rifle to her shoulder, pointing it forward to the gap between the hills, waiting for anybody to peek their head out.
To get a better view, she emerged from behind the rock she was currently using as cover, quickly pulling behind a tree, her shoulders tensing as she waited. Not too far off her, Alejandro was doing the same, keeping an eye on the clear entrance. Not even after a few moments, the first soldier had come into their view, Rora being the first to fire her gun, hitting him dead-eye in the head, causing his body to collapse on the ground.
After that, hell seemed to break loose.
Rapidly firing upon the soldiers that came to take their lives, Rora was never more focused, taking out as many men as she could, the men beside her doing the same. Noticing movement from her peripheral vision on her right, she spun around to point her gun at the man running down the hill, and just as she squeezed her trigger, Ghost behind a rock, only a few steps behind her did the same, killing him before she could actually hit him.
„Stole my kill there!" she yelled over the rapid gunfire, pulling back behind the tree she had used as cover to look his way. He was busy firing upon two other men, quickly taking them out.
„Is this a competition now?" Ghost fired back, the edge of his voice betraying the slight annoyance he tried to push down since their escape, still slightly pissed that every time she was involved, explosions were involved, too. It disturbed the peace and order he liked to maintain. Rora found it amusing.
„You bet it is," a smirk pulled at her dry lips, jumping out from her cover to kill another man that dared to come too close. „Starting now!"
She missed the way he rolled his eyes at her, getting disturbed by the fact that he found her chaotic self amusing.
Keeping a mental note of the number of her killing, she failed to notice in time that she needed to reload. When she turned to shoot down a man that was running down the side of the mountain towards them, her finger pulled at the trigger of her rifle, only to greet her back with an empty click.
„Fucking hell," Rora groaned out in frustration, discarding the empty clip on the ground.
Retrieving behind the tree was hiding, a shot was fired towards her, the bullet landing just above her head, causing her to duck down further, stopping midway reloading, her head snapping towards the other way, seeing that another man was closing on in her. Alejandro was too busy on his own to notice him in time.
She only hesitated for one heartbeat, but it was enough to cause more chaos around her.
Seeing her situation, Ghost emerged from behind his cover, leaving it as he stepped closer to Rora, shooting down the man that was now only a few feet away from her. And even though he was quick, seemingly not quick enough.
He turned to the side, finger on the trigger, as a bullet grazed his forearm he reached out to pull Rora away, another hitting him in the chest.
She watched in slow-motion, eyes wide as he hit the ground beside her.
And all of a sudden, she was back to the time when she watched Everett getting shot down.
