Let's Set the Stage

School was as boring as ever. It was simple, the getting up and ready every morning, the same boring classes and schedule. Trigonometry, English, history, lunch (where he sat at his desk not actually eating), Spanish, Chemistry, and to end off the day, gym. The only interesting part of his day was staring out the window at Joan Graham, the school's star soccer player, all of chemistry. But, by the end of the day, he was ready to go home.

Carter was never a big fan of school, since the beginning, he was always alone. He always rathered be at home playing his music. He did go, though, for his dad. Carter always faked a smile and played along for him. It was all for him.

Carter's mother ended up leaving soon after he was born, killing herself a couple of months later. For as long as Carter has known his father has been struggling to keep them afloat. One day Carter couldn't take it anymore, coming home from second grade, he threw down his bag. He ran past his father into his room, throwing himself onto his bed. Tears poured down his cheeks as he cried into his pillow. He felt like a burden, the memory of his classmates laughing at him for not having a mother... It was too much. He would be better of gone. He wished he was never born, then maybe his mother would be alive... Maybe his father would be happy... Why did he have to be born?

Being brave, Carter stood up, wiping the tears from his eyes. He walked over to his second-story window. He opened it, staring out for a second before climbing out. He was sitting on the window sill, looking out into the sky, reaching out his hand he longed to be able to fly. To fly away... Wouldn't that be nice? With a deep breath, he pushed himself away from the window, letting his body fall through the air, hitting the ground hard. His father came running out, crashing onto the ground and pulling Carter's body close to him. He mewled as he brushed Carter's hair from his face, tears fell from his eyes onto Carter's face as Carter stared blankly up at him.

Carter was in the hospital for weeks after the incident. Every day his father would come to the hospital straight after work. Staying late into the night, sitting in the hospital chair, watching Carter. He sat there quietly, watching Carter's move, carefully inspecting him, memorizing everything. It wasn't until they arrived home after Carter's discharge did his father speak to him.

As soon as they stepped through the door that day, Carter's father fell to his knees, weeping. Carter stared at him in shock, not understanding. His father grabbed him, pulling him close and burying his face into his hoodie. "Please never do that again! What were you thinking? I was so scared I was going to lose you! Everyday... I was so scared every day was going to be your last... Please! I love you! What were you thinking? Carter, please, talk to me! What were you thinking?" He begged, shaking, holding tighter onto Carter.

"I'm sorry!" Carter cried as he fell to his knees, clutching onto his father. "I wanted you to be happy... And- and I thought you'd be happy without me!"

"I am happy with you! No matter how hard it is sometimes, I will always love you and I will never want you to leave. I'm your dad! I want you to be happy! I want to see you smile and play. I want to watch you grow and become big and strong, to see you live, to see who you become. Carter, I love you so much!" Tears started falling from Carter's eyes as he fell to his knees. Clinging onto each other they sobbed, neither one of them wanting to let the other go. They sat in the entryway for hours, holding onto each other and crying, but they were alright. They were alright.
