3: 'Luck. And Caffeine.' -Tris

TRIS-

Just as I was putting away the last of my clothes into the dresser, my phone chirped to life from where it sat on the bed. A rare picture of Caleb's smiling face lighting up the screen.

I answered and put the call on speaker before flopping down on the cream duvet.

"Hey!" a chorus of crackly voices filled the room. Caleb's was the loudest, yet least enthusiastic. Cara was easily identifiable. And then in the background I could faintly hear Will.

"How've you settled in then?" Caleb's was the only one speaking now.

"Good, I think. Elaine gave me a quick tour of the town earlier as we drove back to the house and said I can go out exploring tomorrow."

"That's good," he said. "Hey Will's perching over my shoulder waiting to talk to you you I'ma hand you over to him, okay?"

"Okay. Bye Caleb. Thanks for calling."

"Bye, Tris. Have fun. But not too much. Have fun fun. Like go to the beach or something. Not- you know."

"I know. I promise. Fresh starts and all."

There was a fumbling and then Will's voice was loud and clear. "Tris!"

"Hey Will," I said, letting out a soft laugh. "Finished packing up all your crap for college yet?"

"I'll let you know that all my crap is collectible items. Give it fifty years and it'll all be worth a fortune. And no, realised I don't have enough space so pretty much ninety-nine percent of it is staying here."

"Oh you realised, did you? Was that before or after everyone said you'd need a hundred boxes for it all?"

"After. But it's less than a hundred boxes. Probably closer to twenty or something."

"Alright then. When are you leaving then?"

"In two hours or so, probably. Gonna do the drive overnight so I can get there first thing in the morning and hopefully be unpacked by the afternoon."

"Good luck with that, then."

"Yeah... I'll probably need luck. And caffeine. Caffeine will be most useful."

"Okay then, I'll let you go. Maybe you can snag a quick power-nap or something. Bye."

"Bye."

"Bye!" all three of them cackled once more. And then the room fell silent.

That was it. All my friends were off to college. And here I was. In a beach town, helping out at a B&B, with counseling sessions booked every Thursday morning, and an online course so that I could scrape up the qualifications needed to go into secretarial work. How fun.

"Tris! I've made tea, do you want some?" I heard Elaine shout up the stairs.

"No thanks, I'm good. Think I might just go to sleep and get an early night." I called back.

And then Elaine's head appeared in the open doorway. "Okie dokie, then. Tomorrow I'll give you quick run down of how breakfast goes here. There's guests arriving at four-ish tomorrow so I can also show you the check in books and how the computer works as well then if you're around. Oh and there's leaflets with the bus times at the front desk if you want to take one when you go out."

"Great, thank you."

"G'night then."

"'Night."

A/N

Two updates in one weekend. Celebrations! (hopefully)

There's a weird guy that just straight up calls me 'girl' where I work. But he has a cut dog. I think it's a chihuahua or something. Whatever it is it's tiny and is only happy if it's being carried. I've dubbed it the angry squirrel.

As always, I do not own divergent.
