The last piece for a long while
Disclaimer: I know absolutely nothing about Crystal. I don't even know if her depiction is accurate. 2, I know Stephie probably wasn't around but I needed a friend for Babs and I didn't feel like making an oc. That's all have fun and I will try to get back into writing this. As of now this is the last finished part of Killing Joke AU.
Dick walked up the stairs to an apartment owned by Crystal Brown, dressed as Officer Dick Grayson of Blüdhaven PD. He left Jason in the car, believing that his presence wasn't required at the moment. Dick was still getting used to the idea that his little brother won't walk ever again.
Wow, little brother. When did Dick last look at him before tonight? Sure Dick was with him on Young Justice but that was work. When did he ever hang out with him as his older brother, not Jason's predecessor? Suddenly, guilt plagued Dick as he stopped outside the apartment door.
‘I'll be a better big brother. I won't make the same mistakes again,’ Dick vowed as he knocked on the door. He put on his brightest smile to disguise his inner turmoil as a woman opened the door.
The woman was in her 30s and had short, light brown hair. Black glasses sat over green eyes as she regarded him suspiciously.
“Hello. How can I help you, Officer?” She asked, not trusting him. Dick ignored the coldness.
“Hello Miss. Sorry to disturb you so late but I need to talk to Barbara Gordon. Is she here?” The woman looked him up and down before turning her head slightly so that he was still in her line of vision.
“Stephanie!” She yelled, “I need you down here! Bring Barbara too!”
“Coming Mom!” A voice, most likely Stephanie's, replied. The woman turned back to Dick.
“Would you like to come in, Officer…?”
“Grayson. Officer Dick Grayson, ma'am,” he supplied her. She nodded and opened the door wider.
“Crystal Brown,” Crystal said, leading Dick to the living room, “What do you need, Officer Grayson?”
“It's about Barbara,” he told her as they entered.
The living room was messy, as though it hadn't been cleaned in a week. Discarded books and magazines laid on the oak coffee table. The tv, paused, showed two detectives talking in the police office. The man with white/gray hair had his mouth open like he was arguing with someone. Dick must've interrupted an episode of Blue Bloods.
There were two grey chairs and a light green couch that fit just right despite the coloring. Behind the couch was a white kitchen that looked well kept and nice. the beginnings of a staircase was placed in between the kitchen and a hall leading further into the house. Crystal motioned for him to sit. Dick took the middle of the couch while the hostess took the grey chair farthest from him.
Not that he blamed her. Dick was an out of town cop and asking for the Commissioner's daughter. Plenty to be suspicious about there.
Dick heard two pairs of feet coming down the stairs, one jumping down by twos and the other more reserved yet still hurrying. He turned to see Barbara and a blond, blue eyed girl at the beginning of the stairwell.
“Girls,” Crystal began, “this is-”
“Dick!” Barbara said in surprise. The blond girl, Stephanie probably, beside her snickered before a glare from Crystal silenced her.
“Hey Babs,” Dick smiled. Barbara ran and gave him a hug while Stephanie went to go sit in the other chair.
“What are you doing here? I thought you were in Blüdhaven,” Barbara asked. Dick's smile faded quickly.
“Joker has Jim, Babs. We need to get you out of here in case he tries to come after you too,” Barbara stared at Dick in shock.
“What?” She breathed out. Tears sprung from her eyes as Dick pulled her into a quick hug.
“I'm sorry, Barbara,” he said, pulling away, “we need to go now.”
“Now wait a minute here, Mr. Grayson,” Crystal stood up and marched up to Dick, “how do we know if Joker really has the Commissioner? For all we know, you could be lying and working for Joker!”
As much as Dick respected her protecting Barbara from a potential threat, he was more than a bit miffed that Crystal accusing him of siding with Joker.
“I've known Dick most of my life, Crystal,” Barbara stepped in, saving the man in question from saying something he'd regret, “he would never lie about anyone's safety. Anyone.”
Crystal sighed heavily under Barbara's determined gaze, “Fine. But you will call me when you get there.”
She turned her attention to Dick, “I'm assuming you can't tell me where she's going?” He nodded, “If anything happens to her, I will rip off your balls slowly, shove them down your throat, and throw you, bleeding, into the ocean.”
Dick gulped, “Yes ma'am.”
Crystal led them to the front door. Before Barbara went out, her hostess pulled the redhead into a hug.
“Be safe, Barbara.”
“I will, Crystal,” the older woman released Barbara from her hold. As she went down the stairs, Crystal grabbed Dick's wrist. Dick was surprised by the strength of the woman as her green eyes glared at him.
“Remember what I told you. I don't care about your position in the BPD. Anything happens to that girl, you don't need to worry about the Bat.”
