22 ➺ THE DEVIL LOOKS AFTER HIS OWN

I'M THE KING AND YOU'RE THE
QUEEN AND WE WILL STUMBLE
THROUGH HEAVEN.

LUCIFER'S PENTHOUSE WAS filled with uncomfortable silence, as the Devil impatiently waited for his wife to react in any way to the news he had come back home with. But frankly, Genevieve was at a loss of words — she was surprised, but at the same time, angry as some kind of panic forced its way into her racing heart at the thought of Lucifer going back to Heaven with his family and, once again, leaving her behind. Whereas the Devil had once been an angel, the Shedevil was, quite literally, pure Hell and therefore unable to join her husband in Heaven.

And that was why she finally ended up standing up from the couch and walking over to Lucifer, who was seated by the piano and lazily playing Smoke on the Water. The first thing she did was smack the back of his head in disappointment, unwilling to even think about being abandoned yet again, just when they had managed to find hope in their relationship. Things were finally somewhat good, but if Lucifer were to leave Earth, Genevieve would spiral out of control and become the person she was trying to keep on a leash.

"What the bloody hell, Gen?", Lucifer yelped as his hand went to touch the spot she had shamelessly slapped, but instead of giving her husband an apologetic look, she merely narrowed her eyes at him and crossed her arms while taking a step back.

"You're really leaving me again? For Heaven? And here I thought that we could be— I thought that was the last place you'd want to go! So, I ask you, Lucifer, what the bloody hell?", she spat angrily, her hands beginning to shake as she realized how close she was to losing him again. Well, at least she wasn't going to help him climb the stairway to heaven — if anything, she was going to try her hardest to make it impossible for Lucifer and his stupid family.

She was hurt that Lucifer was making it seem so easy, like Genevieve didn't even matter and leaving her behind was becoming a habit. That eventually caused her eyes to sting again, and cursing, the woman uncrossed her arms so she could wipe the incoming tears before they even had the chance to roll out. "Humans suck. I hate feelings", she simply muttered as she started to walk away.

But before she could reach the balcony, of which she kind of wanted to jump off in this whirlwind of emotions, Lucifer stood up and rushed after his wife. His hand took hers and as he gently held it, the man flashed a fond smile at Genevieve and shook his head, amused by her assumptions. "I would never do that to you, Gen. Not again. I'm simply asking for your assistance, so I can cut through the gates of Heaven with the Flaming Sword and kick Mum back in where she belongs", he explained, and at this, Genevieve's eyes widened and she looked up at her husband with doubt.

"You're not leaving me?", she whispered, almost vulnerable as the words slipped from between her lips, which made Lucifer sigh fondly at the emotions she rarely displayed. Closing her in a soft embrace, he held Genevieve close to his chest and placed a gentle kiss atop her head before assuring he had no intentions to turn his back on her ever again. "Then— what's your plan? Why kick your Mother back in? Why not just send her to Hell?", the queen questioned Lucifer's intentions, not quite following. Luckily, Lucifer was beyond willing to elaborate.

"Well, that way, she'll be out of our lives for good. We both know Hell can't hold her back, but I expect that in Heaven, she and Dad will tear each other apart. You know, have an epic battle, possibly to death", Lucifer grinned as he let go of Genevieve — well, not entirely, but enough to stare down into her eyes with excitement burning in his own.

The plan caused Genevieve's eyes to widen, but eventually, the surprise in her faded into amazement and equal enthusiasm. "Darling, that's diabolical. I love it", she grinned, more than willing to assist her husband in kicking his Mother through the gates of Heaven. It was quite the tempting thought, being free of her mother-in-law for good, and however Lucifer was going to play this plan through, she was game.

"So you'll help me?", Lucifer confirmed, making Genevieve nod her head rapidly.

"You had me at out of our lives for good. Besides... It hasn't been easy for me to admit, but I think that you do, in fact, deserve happiness. And my biggest regret is letting the darkness consume me and keeping you away from that happiness. That's not what you signed up for, but that's what I gave you, and— I'm— well, yeah", Genevieve smiled faintly, finding some unexpected strength from herself — she had never said that out loud, admitting that she had been wrong. Still, she couldn't bring herself to saying the words I'm sorry just yet, but concluding from the fond smile on Lucifer's face, he got the idea.

"So I'll help. That is, if someone doesn't murder me first", Genevieve then snorted bitterly as she remembered the dagger, and with that, she stepped away from Lucifer and let her fingers run through her hair whilst a groan rose from her throat. However, Lucifer was quick to rush after her and pull her back into his arms for comfort and warmth.

"First of all, you can't blame yourself for everything you've done. After all, I created you and gave you all the potential you decided to put into play. And as for that bloody dagger, it shall never come anywhere near you, love. I know you don't need my protection, but you'll have it nonetheless. We'll find the weapon and make whoever took it pay, together", Lucifer reassured his queen, his thumb caressing her cheek whilst looking down into her eyes and smiling softly.

And all Genevieve could think was how she didn't deserve this. She didn't deserve Lucifer and his kind words and his love — after everything she had done to torture him, to keep him away from happiness, to hurt and get her revenge, Genevieve didn't deserve a second chance. She wasn't sure if she deserved anything more than the dagger driven through her heart, and that was confirmed by the selfishness in her. Even though she knew she kind of had it coming, she didn't want to die — she wanted Lucifer, she wanted his love and she wanted happiness.

That was why she leaned in for a kiss, her eyes closing as her hand went to Lucifer's chest and relied on her tippy-toes for balance and more height — she had never liked the noticeable difference between them, but she could not deny the safety she felt when Lucifer's tall, lanky body leaned against hers and his muscular arms wrapped around her shorter, but curvier figure.

He kissed her with fire — which was expected from the former King of Hell — and it made Genevieve smile, even wider when Lucifer let his hands wander from her hips to her thighs, giving him the opportunity to lift her up. Which he did with ease, forcing a small chuckle from Genevieve as her legs wrapped around her husband's waist, and both of her hands proceeded to grab his face rougher. The stubble adorning his jaw scratched Genevieve's smooth skin in the most bittersweet way, and the feeling of his fingers digging into her thighs was earning small, satisfied sighs from her, along with his lips against her soft neck.

And when Lucifer had carried her close enough to his bed for him to roughly drop her body on the mattress, Genevieve sank her teeth into her bottom lip as a wild grin broke over her swollen lips, knowing exactly how the night was going to end — if it would ever end, at all.

—————

LUCIFER AND GINNY were both grinning when they woke up the next morning, surrounded by the feathers from the numerous pillows in his messy bed, tangled in the shared sheets whilst their naked bodies rested next to one another, reminding them of the good, long night they had spent together. Frankly, it was surprising it hadn't happened sooner — everyone who knew Lucifer, knew his obsession with sex, and that was just another thing Genevieve had in common with her husband. However, the urge hadn't been so strong for her, as she had spent all her energy and motivation on revenge, but now that the number one man in her life was no longer an enemy, but a rather close ally, the desire within her was breaking free.

Their shared morning was soon over, as the duty of a Civilian Consultant called Lucifer's name and the man was forced to leave the comfortable bed they could have easily spent the entire day in. After enjoying the show of her husband getting dressed into one of his usual suits, Genevieve had remained in bed by herself for a moment, grinning into one of the broken pillows and feeling her heart swell in her chest. She had never thought she'd have this, but it seemed she wasn't the only one glad to reunite. Lucifer still seemed to care about her, despite everything, and that was enough to put a nearly indestructible smile on her face.

The queen spent her hours at Lux for the most part, trying to find people she could interrogate — or more like torture for information. Things had changed in Genevieve, and she was no longer the person she had been when coming to Earth, but she was still the Shedevil and herself, which was why she had no trouble luring men and women into her traps so she could make them talk. She needed to know about her dagger, and mostly where it was, but so far, all the drownings and chokings, and even the more creative methods had proved themselves useless. No one seemed to know anything about the Shedevil's only true enemy, which only worried her more.

But frankly, she had her suspects. She did consider Mazikeen a threat, but compared to Mom, Maze was like a kitten. Genevieve had danced with her before, and she knew the demon rather well — she was, after all, her former subject, and in a way, her sister. Or, at the very least, they had both been forged in Hell, which caused them to share some kind of connection — granted, they had buried it deep, deep down, but it still existed. Whereas Mom was just a hateful bitch. That was the one thing she had in common with Genevieve, but they were barely alike.

And she also knew that if only given the chance, Lucifer's Mother wouldn't hesitate to kill Genevieve, even if she was her son's wife. That was exactly what made her dangerous — she thought she was protecting Lucifer, when in reality she was only making him hate her more. No doubt slaughtering the Devil's soulmate would be another way to do so.

Genevieve's so-called interrogations were interrupted by Lucifer himself, when the man suddenly arrived in his penthouse with a large grin plastered across his face and that proud look in his eyes, the one that meant he had realized or come up with something. Hopefully regarding the plan to send Mom back to Heaven.

"What is it?", Ginny asked as she casually dangled a man she had been talking to over Lucifer's balcony, which made him look at his wife with a disapproving look. "Fine, I'll put him down", Genevieve sighed whilst rolling her eyes, and with that, she let go of the stranger as if to drop him off of the balcony, which shocked Lucifer, but at last second, the queen broke into a teasing grin and pulled the man up. "I'm just kidding", she joked, before throwing the man onto the floor, and in a matter of seconds, he had scrambled up to both feet and run out of the penthouse.

No surprises there. However, Lucifer did come bearing some.

"I have an eight-year-old child in the car!", Lucifer exclaimed, which shocked Genevieve to a point she almost fell off of the balcony herself, but that was not the end of surprises.

"Will you, Genevieve Morningstar, be the mother of my fake child?"
