12 ➺ A COLD DAY IN HELL

IN HER HEART, THERE'S A
HOLE, THERE'S A BLACK
MARK ON HER SOUL.

HESITANTLY, GENEVIEVE KNOCKED on Dr. Martin's door, knowing that she could have answers to her questions, but it still felt somewhat degrading to go to some human for help. She was, after all, the Shedevil herself. But that was exactly why Linda didn't open the door, but instead, yelled, "Go away!", from the room. With her eyebrows knitted together, Genevieve merely used her entire fist to bang the door loudly, startling Linda who was cowering behind her desk indoors, but the scariest part was yet to come. Unwilling to be turned away by her therapist, Genevieve kicked the door in, causing it to fall off of its hinges and collapse onto the floor before the queen stepped in dramatically. And inside, she found a screaming Linda.

"I know Krav Maga!", she tried to defend herself from Genevieve, even though she wasn't even there to hurt her — but even if she was, Linda's talent in martial arts wouldn't get the blonde very far if she were to fight the queen. But she seemed to know that too. "Not that I think I could win the actual Queen of Hell...", she then muttered to herself, still crouched behind her desk, whilst Genevieve's eyes widened with shock.

"He showed you? But you're just— just some small human!", was Genevieve's initial reaction, her wide eyes still staring at Linda in disbelief, but once she realized how truly terrified she was, Ginny sighed. "Get up, Linda. I'm not here to hurt you, you don't have to be scared— well, actually, you should be scared, but I need you too much to brutally murder you, so", she explained, and slowly but surely — probably because she feared the consequences of disobeying the infamous Killer Queen — Linda stood up from the floor and looked at Genevieve with fear still in her eyes.

"You're the freaking Shedevil. I don't know if I can get over that", Linda whispered as she made sure to remain at a safe distance from Ginny — she now saw her, Lucifer, Maze, Amenadiel and Charlotte in a whole new light, and truthfully, it was leaning more towards darkness, actually. She was scared, and Genevieve understood that, as Linda was merely a human who couldn't comprehend all these things bigger than herself. But she didn't sympathize.

"Yes, well, I suggest you do, because I have more problems I wish to share with you. Turns out, I still have eons of hatred towards Lucifer bottled up within", Genevieve sighed, crossing her arms as she eyed Linda, who only then seemed to realize something more.

"Oh my— You're actually Lucifer's wife! He actually created you from the sins in Hell to be his queen. You're... Wow, just... wowza", Linda gushed as she moved her hands in the air, staring at Genevieve in disbelief, unable to comprehend the beauty of her, the story behind her. But she didn't exactly have time for this.

Sighing, Genevieve turned on her heel. "And you've just crossed the line between understandable and useless. I'll pay for the door", she rolled her eyes, and then disappeared out of the very same doorway she had ruined with her badass kick, deciding that she needed another cure for her troubles — alcohol.

And she knew just where to go.

—————

THERE WAS MUSIC playing rather loudly in Lux as she entered it, people swarming the dance floor and jumping up and down along the beat. Lucifer was — luckily — nowhere to be seen, which filled Genevieve with relief, because she was yet to sharpen her nails and was there only for a drink, but if she were to come across her husband, she wasn't so sure if she could stop herself from attacking him. But, indeed, she wasn't there for him, and with that in mind, Genevieve waltzed to the bar and found a seat by the counter, before clearing her throat to earn a certain demon's attention.

"Bartender", she spoke, and knowing very well that her voice was one of a kind when it was considered an enemy, she eyed Mazikeen who instantly turned around and shot Ginny a glare.

"Yay, you found me", was her bitter response, and with equal sarcasm, Genevieve fired back.

"Lucky me", she spoke snarkily, narrowing her eyes at Maze, before asking her to pour a drink for her. Reluctantly, the demon grabbed a bottle before doing as had been requested, and as she filled a shot glass with the unfamiliar alcohol Genevieve was less scared to taste this time, the glare remained in her eyes. She was not happy to see the Shedevil in the club, but Genevieve did whatever she pleased, and she had to admit — Mazikeen was good at her job. And she had once been something other than an enemy, and therefore, perhaps Genevieve was hoping their encounter wouldn't end in a bloodbath. At least today.

After she had downed the drink, Maze poured Ginny another one, before making one for herself too — it seemed she needed it. "If you've come for Lucifer—", the demon began, but before she could even finish her petty, meaningless threats, Genevieve had interrupted with a chuckle and shaken her head in disagreement.

"Not everything I do revolves around that wretched man, Mazikeen. Shame I can't say the same about you", Genevieve teased, drowning her words in her second drink of the day, which clearly seemed to irritate Maze to a point where she just had to return the mockery.

"Yeah, well, tell me, queen — where's your loyal army? I thought royals were supposed to have humble subjects to follow them and all that", Mazikeen wondered, resting her jaw against her palm, "or are you just that toxic?", but if she thought she was somehow better, somehow smarter with her wit than Genevieve, she was greatly mistaken.

"It's called being independent, why don't you look it up?", the queen responded sassily, and even though Maze was already fuming, Genevieve was nowhere near finished. "And if you're looking for the subjects I rule, I'm sure you can find a mirror somewhere, darling", she continued, and at this point, Maze truly desired to smash that glass in her hand and then stab Ginny with the broken shards, but instead, she decided to bring up the one thing that actually could hurt her.

Smiling to herself, Maze leaned away from Genevieve, knowing she was about to win their petty fight. "Let's see how smug and sassy you'll be when I have your dagger in my hand and I drive it through your heart, huh? I bet it'll be real fun to finally see the glorious queen bleed and bless us all by dying away", the demon then threatened, and unwilling to hear this from her, Genevieve jumped up from her seat and shattered her glass against the counter.

However, something stopped her from jumping towards Mazikeen — or more accurately, someone.

"Genevieve", a familiar voice caused the queen to freeze, and after she had exaggeratedly rolled her eyes, she turned around to face Lucifer who was standing there with a heavy layer of guilt painted all over his features.

"Save it. Whatever you want to say, it won't take away the incredible thirst to make you feel my pain — you know, the pain you caused", she accused Lucifer shamelessly, a mad glare in her eyes as she looked at her husband with anger and fury. And instead of fighting back, Lucifer just clenched his jaw and spoke up with something way different than an apology at the tip of his tongue.

"Someone's stolen Azrael's blade. It's out there, and a lot of people will die — if we don't find it, who knows what could happen", Lucifer attempted to earn Genevieve's sympathy, but he should have known, it was going to take a lot to gain such luxuries.

Laughing, Ginny clapped her hands together, which caused Lucifer's lips to turn into a disappointed frown. "Marvelous! Well, then, I better go find myself a front row seat from where I can watch your precious little Earth burn. And hopefully, all of you along with it", she smiled happily, and after pointing at Lucifer and Maze, she started to walk away.

Frankly, she didn't care. Or at the very least, she tried not to.

But even if Genevieve managed to turn her back on Lucifer and decline his offer to help, she couldn't deny the curiosity rising within her. If this was going to be the end of Los Angeles and all the people in it, she wanted to know whose hands it was going come by — therefore, after she had walked around the quiet streets of the city for a while, telling herself that she could fight the desire, she gave up and made her way to where she knew Lucifer and the rest of LAPD to be.

And it seemed her timing was rather impeccable. She showed up just flawlessly, the threats coming from the backyard of someone's home earning her attention, and it didn't take Genevieve very long to find herself standing on recently cut grass, a large pool in front of her, and on the other side, Lucifer and Daniel. "I know you ate my pudding!", the latter growled at Lucifer, pointing Azrael's blade at the Devil, and as much as Genevieve would have liked to watch the situation unfold, she decided to insert herself into it.

"Well, don't take all the credit, sweetheart. I'm guilty too. What can I say — you have the best snacks in the precinct", Ginny shrugged as she walked to the other side, causing both Lucifer and Dan to look at her with wide eyes. And she could tell Lucifer wanted to point out how she arrived despite saying she wouldn't, but a simple glare from her shut him up before he could even part those soft lips of his.

For a single, fleeting moment, Dan stared at Genevieve with a blank expression — his eyes devoid of emotion, and his hand steadily pointing the blade at the queen, who forgot to care about having her life threatened. She was aware of the things such a weapon could do in its divinity, and how it was one of the two things capable of hurting Genevieve — Azrael's blade could hurt humans and divine creatures all alike, but then there was the dagger that was created alongside Genevieve. Everything else, well, they failed to hurt her. And she doubted this weapon's chances, as Dan was the one holding it, but once the moment of silence passed and he broke into laughter, Genevieve actually jumped slightly.

"You ruined my life. You're still doing it. You've broken me, turned me into some puppet, a piece in that game of yours that can't be won. With you, there's only losers", Dan's laughter came to a quick stop as he stepped closer to Ginny with the blade's sharp edges ready to sink into her usually immortal flesh, ready to shed the blood that not all men could. Licking her dry lips swiftly, Genevieve eyed Lucifer and as expected, he was staring at her in disbelief — had she truly relied on Detective Douche? Of course, it made sense though, it was a surefire way to snake her way into Lucifer's life.

"Glad to know you're not ashamed of who you are", Genevieve then shamelessly teased, of course referring to the word loser, but going there was obviously a mistake.

Dan lunged forward with fury driving him further, and before Genevieve had any time to react, the detective had swung the blade across the air and with one swift movement, it had slashed the queen's face. Yelping at the unexpected, unfamiliar sensation that burned like hellfire on her cheek, Genevieve stepped back and lifted her hand to touch her cheek, now bleeding after Dan had successfully attacked her.

And well, there was much negativity between Lucifer and Genevieve, many emotions and most of them related to the hatred rooted deep in Ginny's heart, but the Devil had zero tolerance for other people hurting his wife. Without even realizing it himself, Lucifer stepped forward bravely, shielding Genevieve as the queen stumbled back and stared at the blood staining her fingers, his worried expression hardening into something much different as he glared at Dan. Genevieve wanted to insist she didn't need him to worry or hover, or the feeble attempts to be a protective husband, but she knew that Dan could kill her if he only wanted to — and he did.

Therefore, Genevieve kept her sassy mouth shut for once and watched as Dan proceeded to threaten Lucifer instead, Azrael's blade still tight in his hand and ready to torment the Devil's soul. Frankly, in that moment, even the Shedevil quivered — it was a feeling she rarely felt, if ever, how every heartbeat pumped more fear into her system. She was never scared, but as she looked how the situation played out, she couldn't help but admit the trembling of her hands, the nervous racing of her heart — and it wasn't just for herself. She didn't want to die, but at the same time, she couldn't help but feel the desire to help Lucifer.

And even more shockingly, Genevieve feared for Daniel. The man she had gotten used to was gone, the kind eyes replaced with cold ones, the warmth of his body transformed into the desire to kill and eradicate. His good heart and caring mind, gone.

Genevieve was paralyzed by the unfamiliar fear running through her veins, and all she could do was watch from aside how the homicidal detective threatened the life of her husband. However, Lucifer, being the sneaky, charming Devil he was, managed to talk his way out of even this, and the blade ended up in his hand in the end. And as soon as Dan snapped out of the weapon's spell and the blade was hidden in Lucifer's pocket, Genevieve could sigh out in relief and feel her body come back to life.

"Oh my God", Ginny breathed out quietly once a sense of safety landed on her — Lucifer made up a lie to explain why they were standing outside, and trying to believe him, Dan stumbled back indoors, leaving the two hellish creatures with one another.

Chuckling, Lucifer shook his head. "You said it, Gen", he sighed as he stepped closer to his wife, a gentle look in his eyes when they found the cut on her cheek. "It's just a graze. Looks like I won't be getting rid of you just yet", he teased fondly whilst his thumb reached over to her slashed cheek, but as soon as his skin touched hers, Genevieve stepped back and gave Lucifer a warning stare.

There was much she could have said, or should have, but no words left her mouth as she started to walk away. Perhaps she wanted to tease him about how he stood up to protect her, or maybe she wanted to tell him to go to hell — literally or not, his choice — but she said nothing. And neither did Lucifer, even though he had noticed how Genevieve had been scared, how she had been worried, how spending time with humans was causing her to learn a little something from them.

But instead of all those words they could have said, they settled for silence, and Lucifer let Genevieve go. However, his eyes never left his queen until she wasn't there for him to admire anymore.
