09 ➺ SYMPATHY FOR THE (SHE)DEVIL

EVERY WOUND WILL
SHAPE ME, EVERY SCAR
WILL BUILD MY THRONE.

"WELCOME BACK, GENEVIEVE", Dr. Martin greeted her newest client with a polite smile, as the queen waltzed into the therapist's office and found a seat on the couch once again. Returning the smile, just in a more sultry manner, Genevieve brought her leg on top of the other, only for the confidence to fade away as she turned to look at the table and observed the small jar of colorful tiny bears resting there. "Feel free to taste some. They won't bite", Linda commented with an amused shade to her voice, and smiling to herself at the thought of those small bears attempting to bite her, Genevieve did as had been recommended and took a couple of them in her hand.

"I'm glad you came back. I think we can really work through some of those worries you have", the doctor continued, as Ginny tasted the yellow and green gummy bears, surprised by the delightful, sweet taste on her tongue. It appeared to be candy, which she had grown utterly fond of already — or chocolate, at least, which she had discovered in Detective Douche's kitchen before eating all of it and making the man very unhappy with the lack of respect towards his hidden stash. But gummy bears seemed quite lovely, too.

Chuckling, Genevieve leaned behind and let her back rest against the couch. "I wouldn't call them worries. It's just— those pesky feelings are, frankly, a nuisance. I don't want them", she explained as her fingers entwined and she shot the doctor an intent gaze, one that caused Linda to shuffle uncomfortably on her own seat. There was much she wanted to say, for example that Genevieve couldn't just get rid of emotions and pretend as if they didn't exist, but knowing that the woman had quite the temper, Dr. Martin decided to avoid those exact words.

"Uh-huh. Well, where were these feelings before? Why are they showing up now? What's changed?", she wondered, presenting some good questions that Ginny proceeded to think about. She was smart, like Lucifer, but she resembled her husband also in that naive manner that failed to see things despite them being clear as glass — it was obvious what was happening to her and why, but she couldn't quite understand it, and Linda had seen the same happen to Lucifer, who was, frankly, rather lost when it came to reading himself.

"Huh. I suppose Earth is having some kind of a nasty side effect on me. Since I, you know, left Hell. I'm experiencing things I never have before. Like gummy bears", she smiled, looking over to Linda briefly before letting her stare fall to her hands. The more she thought about it, the more her smile faded off of her red lips, and things no longer seemed so amusing. She was changing, but she didn't want to. "I used to shut my feelings out, hide them. Because I didn't need them. But now that I'm trying to blend in with humans, I suppose I'm becoming more human, myself. It's... disgusting", Genevieve shivered, a sense of discomfort landing on her heart and a lump rising to her throat.

"That's okay, it really is", Linda assured, but when Genevieve looked up with a glare, she decided to change the subject. "Tell me, what do you mean by Hell? Why are you the Shedevil?", the therapist then questioned as her head tilted to the side and her eyes observed Ginny — she did look inhumanly gorgeous, and there was something strange about her, like there was about Lucifer. So in some weird way, it made sense.

Once again, Genevieve chuckled. "I mean Hell as in literal Hell. The opposite of Heaven. I was created to rule it with Lucifer, be the queen of those wretched, tortured souls. Formed of the deadly sins and brought to life to marry the Devil", the queen elaborated, and at this point, Linda was struggling to make sense of the metaphors. But she did hear something that she couldn't help but get stuck on.

"So you say you were born just to please the Devil. That you exist just because Lucifer decided so. How does that make you feel? Knowing that even though you are this independent... queen, as you put it, he's the one with the control?", Linda pointed out, her eyes meeting Genevieve's, as the demon grinned at the therapist's silly questions. But when Ginny really thought about it, she understood that Dr. Martin wasn't that far from the truth, that she was saying something wise, and frankly, she didn't like it one bit.

With a hurt expression, Genevieve let her gaze drop from Linda again, her heart beginning to race in her chest and her mind filling with rage. All this time, she had hated Lucifer for abandoning her, but this? This was just another reason to be profoundly mad at him. She was his creation, a figment of his imagination, and as the realization settled in, so did the pure fury that caused Ginny to jump up from the couch.

"I think I've blabbered enough. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go and give my husband what he deserves", the Shedevil cleared her throat, pursing her lips in a sarcastic smile as she headed towards the door. Linda made a move to stop her, but she had barely stood up when the queen had turned over to her with a mad, hurt look in her eyes. "Don't you dare stand in my way. I don't wish to hurt you, doctor, but I will if I have to", she whispered, her words causing Linda to freeze, for which Ginny was grateful. She didn't want to waste time killing her therapist.

She just wanted to hurt Lucifer.

—————

THE DAY HAD started so well for Genevieve, as Dan had ever so kindly stopped by the nearby store for more Pop-Tarts — not that the demon had given him much choice — and then offered to show her the magic of a game involving candies. It was odd, but addicting, and Ginny found herself somewhat comfortable whilst teasing Daniel and poking the screen of his phone to make the colorful candies switch places and earn points for her. But now? She was fueled with rage, and the usual smirk that always danced on her lips was nowhere to be found from her grim expression as she made her way to Lux, ready to burn her husband down. It was a well-known fact that whenever Genevieve was angry, she left bodies in her wake and the target of her wrath would come to regret ever upsetting her so.

Except this time, she wasn't going to make it far, but she was hellbent on trying.

With a familiar ding, the elevator stopped at Lucifer's penthouse after the queen had sneaked in and aggressively pushed the button, nearly breaking it, and as soon as the doors parted, Genevieve stormed out. However, instead of finding Lucifer, she came face to face with a woman she so despised, and concluding from the look on Mom's face, she was expecting someone else too — however, soon enough, the delight and fondness on her features became twisted with disgust and disappointment at the sight of her son's vengeful wife.

"Oh", Charlotte simply sighed, "you", before returning to her drink. The way she sipped on the alcohol so smugly, frankly, irritated Genevieve to a point where she strutted to the goddess and smacked the glass off of her hand, causing it to fly to the floor and shatter to tiny pieces.

"Where is Lucifer?", Genevieve hissed, her eyes narrowing towards Charlotte who seemed rather shocked that the queen would disrespect her like that. But she quickly realized that the queen was at a point of no return, and defying her would only get that pathetic skin sack that Mom was inhabiting killed. Therefore, the goddess briefly glanced at the remains of her drink, now merely a mess on the floorboards, before sighing and giving Genevieve the answer.

"He's... out. With Uriel. He's come to Earth as well, so Lucifer is going to deal with it", Mom explained, whilst her fingers nervously fiddled with one another.

Even though Genevieve had lived in the belief that there couldn't be any more surprises, this was brought to her knowledge — Lucifer's brother, and not even one of the tempting ones, had arrived on this puny little planet and it made the Shedevil groan. Frankly, she quite enjoyed Earth so far, but she didn't expect the place to have this much appeal.

"Lovely! I hope he returns soon for this nice little family reunion. I forgot the wine, but I did bring this", Genevieve flashed a sarcastic smirk, before pulling out a knife sharper than her witty tongue, and as the amusement on her face turned into anger, she tried to slash Charlotte with the weapon. Unfortunately, Mom managed to dodge the murder attempt, but Genevieve wasn't quite ready to stop trying. "Why don't I kill you all while I'm at it? Make it one hell of a party, eh?", the queen spat as she tried to stab Charlotte, who tried to run away from Genevieve only for her to reclaim the distance created between them.

Mom tried to fight back, but Ginny didn't exactly give her time to do so when the knife in her hand was already ready to slit her throat or cut off her fingers. It left the two running around Lucifer's penthouse, with Mom attempting to keep herself alive and Genevieve feeling a tad homicidal — and well, she was planning on smiting Lucifer, but while he was out, Genevieve decided, she might as well get started with the Supreme Goddess, the mother-in-law from Hell.

Eventually, Genevieve managed to tackle Charlotte to the ground, and the sight of the goddess squirming beneath her body made the queen laugh. "I was supposed to spend the night watching Four Weddings, but what could be more entertaining than draining the blood of my enemies?", she teased as she placed the tip of the knife against Mom's cheek and dragged it down so it left a lovely little cut across her flesh, causing blood to drip down to the floor as she howled in pain and Ginny grinned at her victory.

However, Genevieve couldn't actually kill Charlotte, when the elevator made a familiar sound and the queen instantly jumped up to see who was entering — fingers crossed for Lucifer. And well, it was the Devil alright, but instead of flashing his usual, smug smile, instead of prancing in with confidence, instead of saying something snarky, he seemed... upset. Beyond upset, really — just downright heartbroken, and at the sight of him, Mom leaped to both feet and forgot all about the pain she was in, just to rush to her son.

Lucifer was beaten, to say the least. His hair was disheveled, his suit torn, his face bruised and bloodied, and the red liquid stained his hands too. He looked absolutely broken, with his steps faltering and his voice breaking as he stepped towards his Mother with the utmost despair twisting his face into a sad look. And instinctively, Charlotte pulled Lucifer into a hug and proceeded to hold him as he cried, his entire body shaking.

Then, the thick silence in the penthouse was torn to shreds by his hoarse, "What have I done?", spoken with so many emotions Genevieve could barely recognize any. But she did identify hatred. Towards himself.

Genevieve was caught off-guard. She had always known Lucifer to be someone who felt with his whole heart, but she had never seen this kind of a side to him. Sure, she had seen the part that hated his Father, the part that actually cared, but to her, he had always been this confident, brave creature that did whatever he pleased and remained whole. He was superior to others, with strength that could be seen not only physically, but through his mind. Yet there he was — crying, heartbroken, human.

And he was someone Genevieve had come to murder.

She wanted vengeance, and that still remained, and the anger still existed, but as she looked at Lucifer in that moment and saw the emptiness in his eyes and the pure loathing he was filled with, he wasn't an enemy. He was just her husband, someone who Genevieve had promised to support, to endure, to love eternally.

And now that she saw him at his weakest, and felt the desire to wipe his tears or hold him, she was reminded that the promise was yet to be broken.
