3. Are you there God?

After careful consideration I don't believe Mother Josephine would like me bleeding out on her floors.

Therfore I will end my life outside of church grounds. Preferably on a food run. Only thing is my turn falls on next week and I don't have that kind of time. Which means it's time for the old switcheroo.

Before bed last night I double checked to see who was on the roster and lo and behold the name Avery flashed at me in bold letters. Did a 360⁰ just to turn back around and see that same stupid name glaring back at me.

Convincing her to switch with me was going to be hard seeing as Matías was also on today's food run.

Sister Avery wants to climb Matías like a tree.

My plan of action involved Matías, hot pockets, and a few tiny itty bitty threats if the first two didn't work.

Step one was to find Sister Avery, which was easy seeing as she went to pray every day at the same exact time.

She was the only one in the sanctuary when I arrived. Good. No witnesses.

I glanced around once more before stopping a few pews away from her and getting on my knees. At this point my faith was wavering heavily because why would God let this happen to his precious children if not to punish us. Thought this dude was suppose to fix things not make them worse.

It's like the purge except now people have a reason to blow someone's head off.

I cleared my throat then peeked behind my praying hands.

No reaction.

I cleared my throat louder which made me go in to a coughing fit, which had my spit go down the wrong pipe, which made me actually start choking.

I was bent over slapping my chest as hard as I could trying to breath correctly to no avail. Water was what I needed and when I got up to get it there was Sister Avery at the end of my pew with her arms crossed and a glass of water clutched in one hand.

A nervous laugh slash cough escaped my lips. I reached for the glass and she held her hand back.

"Why are you here?"

My hand was still outstretched in mid air while she kept the glass at a distance.

"I came to talk to the big guy upstairs."

She stared at me for what felt like an eternity until she decided to speak again. This time she stepped closer.

Thick skin had made intimidation lost on me. I stayed put.

"I'll ask one time and one time only." Time to change tactics and not lie this time. "Why are you here?"

I huffed a sigh and said," I need a favor."

She handed me the glass and I gulped it down eagerly. Surprisingly she didn't tell me to slow down lest I choke again. That's probably what she wanted.

I belched without covering my mouth in time and she grimaced.

"Out with it," she huffed impatiently.

"I need you to switch food runs with me."

"When hell freezes over."

It might have with all the dead ambling around.

I narrowed my eyes. "I'll help you with Matías."

"I don't need your help."

Internally I guffawed.

"Hmm." I started circling her."How many food runs have you been on with him?"

Playing along, she rolled her eyes. "Plenty."

"And how many times have you tried to make a move on him?"

She mumbled something I could barely make out.

I cupped my hand around my ear. "What was that Sister?"

She whipped around to me. "What point are you trying to make?!"

"After 589 tries," I did catch that number," of trying to dig your gnarled fingers into this man...girl you need help. "

"Maybe it's because you already dug your claws into him!"

Jesus Christ!

"I am trying to help you help me!"

"I don't need your help!"

"Ladies!" A voice boomed from the entrance.

We both whirled to see Mother Josephine glaring at us with her cane.

"The lord can hear you quite clearly without the need to shout at the very heavens."

Sister Avery clasped her hands in front of her and bowed her head. "Apologies Mother Josephine."

Her eyes cut to me before she took her leave with Mother Josephine following behind her.

Then I was alone in the sanctuary.

Trying to die was so frustrating!

In my rage I kicked a pew entirely too hard and ended up hopping around clutching my foot.

On to plan B.
