DESPITE THE AGONY, THE pain, and the sadness that began to slowly trickle throughout Juniper Hale, it soon quickly disappeared when Finnick Odair came to visit her a few days after. And as he went to Juniper's bedside, there was unbelievable happiness in his eyes as he clutched the woman's hand.

"What?" Juniper managed to croak out as she winced. The pain in her ribs was numbed as they healed, but the thoughts in her head were still present. "Why are you so happy?"

But Finnick just shrugged as he beamed, saying, "Nothing."

"Don't do that." Juniper scoffed. "What's wrong? Why are you so happy?"

"... I asked Annie to marry me."

The torture, the suffering, and the sorrow flew out of the woman's system as she blinked once, twice, and then three times. The thoughts that ran wild in her head calmed down as a smile slowly spread across Juniper's lips, letting out a breath of disbelief and shock.

"What?" Juniper asked as she felt herself become slightly lighter. "You asked Annie to what?"

"I asked Annie to marry me," Finnick repeated. "And she said yes."

"Of course she's going to say yes!" Juniper chuckled as she immediately brought the man into a tight embrace, rubbing his back up and down as she laughed. "Of course she said yes!"

Finnick was going to get married. Finnick Odair was going to get married to Annie Cresta. They were going to get married. Disbelief filled Juniper as she thought the same sentence over — Finnick was going to get married — and over. He was going to get married. He was going to be a husband and Annie a wife.

Finnick Odair and Annie Cresta were going to get married

And Juniper supposed they deserved it. After everything, they needed the happiness in their lives, to know that they would always be with each other. As Juniper had thought many times, if anyone deserved to be happy, it would be Annie and Finnick. They deserved it. They needed it. They were going to get married.

But Juniper wasn't the only elated one. The announcement of the wedding seemed to put District Thirteen into a whirl and the Hale woman gathered they didn't have much holidays at all. But, within the next few days, it became very aware that there were differences about what weddings meant in the Capitol and Thirteen.

Coin, the leader of the rebellion that Juniper was yet to meet, figured weddings to be two people signing a piece of paper and being assigned new living quarters. Plutarch thought weddings meant hundreds of people dressed in their finest clothes for a three-day celebration. According to Lucy, the two haggled over the details. Alma Coin rejected the idea of a dinner, entertainment, and alcohol, causing Plutarch Heavensbee to yell, "What's the point of the propo if no-one's having any fun!"

Juniper imagined it would be very hard to put a Gamemaker on a budget, but since Thirteen had no celebrations whatsoever, it still caused a stir. When it was announced that children were wanted to sing District Four's wedding song, apparently nearly every kid showed up with no shortage of volunteers helping make decorations. Even the nurses and doctors within the hospital ward were excited.

It wasn't very hard for Juniper to be elated, happy, and excited for Finnick and Annie, but with the craving of removing the thoughts within her head, it caused her mind to be crammed with everything. But she was truly happy for the couple, even if her longing for morphling was becoming too difficult to comprehend.

But it wasn't a longing. It was a need. She needed the drug to stop her mind from exploding with thoughts. Even with the exciting news of the wedding, it didn't completely stop them. And Juniper needed them to be ceased. She needed them to stop. The Hale woman was sure she couldn't just live off of the small drips she would get from Katniss and even with the dose strong, it was only a little bit. It didn't stop the thoughts. It only numbed her ribs, which were already like that to begin with.

("It was psychological torture... and, oh, did it work.")

(No-one prepared for her to lurch forward, rage emitting off of her in waves as she raked her nails down his face)

("You sick bastard!" Juniper screeched. Blood was gushing down Orion Hale's face as he stumbled backwards, holding his eye)

("... how did you find out about that?")

("Yes, your punishment. Miss Mason's was being electrocuted in water. Mr. Mellark's... well, you'll find out eventually. And Miss Cresta's was being away from Mr. Odair," Clampitt explained. "But yours... my task, your punishment, was to break you.")

(And Juniper could feel her heart rate skyrocket as she felt the Peacekeeper take ahold of her bicep roughly, grasping her)

("So?" Johanna laughed. "Maybe she is, maybe she isn't. No point in moping about something you can't change.")

(But the sigh of relief turned into one of confusion as she walked further into the makeshift house, seeing her father sat in a small chair next to a boarded window, peering through the cracks gently as a piece of paper was crumpled up in his grasp)

(His grip on the paper became tighter, but the girl didn't question it)

("June, no," her father told her harshly, lifting up her head and grasping her cheeks with his big hands. "Don't you dare apologise... this is Snow's fault. This is my fault.")

(But he was riddled with guilt and regret)

(He couldn't look at Juniper without wincing. Every time he looked at her, he felt nauseous. He had to look away whenever he glanced at her eyes)

("Can we agree to not lie to each other, Miss Hale? If I do not lie, you do not lie. It will make things much simpler and much more understandable.")

But on the day of the wedding, Juniper tried to block them out, especially when Dr. Aurelius appeared at the foot of her bed, holding some folded clothes. The Hale woman perked a brow.

"What's this?"

"Your attire for the wedding," the doctor told her as he laid the clothes on the bedside table. "You can't be dancing in your hospital gown."

Juniper couldn't even question him as he snapped the curtains shut to give her privacy. And so, trying to muster enough energy, the woman swung her legs over the bed, ridding the hospital gown from her skin. She then picked up the clothes and realised that it was the same dull, grey jumpsuits that everyone else in Thirteen wore. Groaning, Juniper slipped into it and readjusted the material. There were a pair of boots with the attire and the woman could feel her body aching as she leaned down to slip them on.

Despite Coin saying it was too extravagant and Plutarch saying it was too drab, the wedding was a complete hit. The three hundred lucky guests called from Thirteen wore their grey jumpsuits, the decorations made from autumn foliage, and the music provided by the choir of children accompanied by a lone fiddler from Twelve.

And as guests began to pile into the room where the ceremony would be, Juniper tried to ignore her thoughts as she sat beside Lucy and Haymitch, her knee jumping up and down.

"Why are you nervous?" Haymitch pondered as he glanced at her. "Are you that used to the hospital room?"

"I am not nervous nor used to the hospital room." Juniper sneered.

Finnick hadn't told anyone about how he bumped into the Hale woman in the middle of the night, searching for morphling. He didn't even tell Lucy. He kept the secret to himself and Juniper couldn't be more glad. She didn't need anyone else knowing about her want. But it wasn't like she was addicted. She just needed it to calm her thoughts.

But at the sight of Finnick standing at the arch in a modified suit that used to belong to Peeta, Juniper couldn't be more happy. Finnick Odair was going to be married. He was going to be a husband and a good one at that. Juniper couldn't be more elated.

She never thought happiness could come in a word like this, a world where Snow was around and the Hunger Games were present, but somehow, Finnick Odair and Annie Cresta defied that belief. They made the impossible come true. And Juniper had to crack a smile as she watched Annie come down the aisle, the choir kids humming. She was wearing a green, silk dress that Juniper was sure Katniss had worn in District Five for her Victory Tour.

The ceremony went on for a while and reeked of Four. There was a net woven from long grass that covered the couple during their vows. There was the touching of each other's lips with salt water. An ancient wedding song that likened wedding to a sea voyage rang around, being echoed by the children. And Juniper could see everyone beaming from cheek to cheek after Finnick Odair and Annie Cresta kissed, sealing the union as cheers went around.

They were married.

As the fiddler struck up a tune that turned nearly every head that belonged to District Twelve, Juniper watched as the cameras that littered everywhere in the area zoomed in. The wedding was being broadcasted to nearly every screen. A propo, as Plutarch called it. And as people began to form two long lines, dancing, Juniper swiftly got up from her chair and stood off to the side.

She was not dancing. She might have been happy for Finnick and Annie, but she was not dancing. Her ribs were still twinging slightly and her head spun around continuously. She wasn't going to dance. And neither was Katniss, who was clapping along to the rhythm of the song. Juniper sucked in a large breath of air before beginning to walk over to her.

"Not going to show off your moves?"

"Are you?" Katniss retorted, looking slightly surprised to see the woman speaking to her.

"Don't be ridiculous." Juniper snorted as she crossed her arms. Lucy and Haymitch were clapping to the rhythm as well, off to the side as they muttered to each other. "I can't dance to save my life."

A silence enveloped them as they watched others embarrass themselves and it was Katniss who broke it as she mumbled, "I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"I'm sorry that I didn't see why you hated me and Peeta," she said. "I just thought you hated us because you were... I didn't think of your Games at all."

Juniper clenched her jaw slightly as she replied, "You don't have to apologise. It wasn't your fault that you and Peeta both won."

"But I was insensitive—"

"How were you insensitive?" Juniper scoffed. "We barely spoke during the Quell and that was my doing... and what can you do about it anyway? What happened, happened. You can't change it. It wasn't anyone's fault except Snow's."

Katniss blinked for a while before grumbling, "And your father... everyone heard of what happened... what he did."

Juniper could feel her airways contracting as she flicked her eyes over to Orion Hale, who was standing off to the side as he watched people dance. There was slight scarring on his face from where Juniper attacked him and he looked even more melancholy than he ever did. The Hale woman had to glance away from him.

"Didn't know everyone was such gossips in Thirteen..."

"Everyone saw that you attacked him." Katniss chuckled slightly. "They're all afraid of you now. Even Coin, I reckon."

"I haven't met her." Juniper shrugged. "Sounds like she's a pain, though."

A faint smile appeared on Katniss's lips as she went to go say something, but suddenly, a bony hand pinched her above the elbow as the scowling face of Johanna Mason popped up, who muttered, "Are you going to miss the chance to let Snow see you dancing?"

An argument was ready to bubble past Katniss's lips, but she soon nodded, going off into the crowd as she tried to find her sister. The two began to teach the steps of District Twelve's dance to those from Thirteen as Juniper and Johanna stood beside each other.

"And what about you?" Johanna pressed on, poking her in her good ribs. "You're not going to dance?"

"Are you?" Juniper scoffed.

"Don't be ridiculous."

("Are you?" Katniss retorted, looking slightly surprised to see the woman speaking to her.

"Don't be ridiculous." Juniper snorted as she crossed her arms)

A silence washed over them as they watched the others insist on a special number for the bride and groom. Juniper couldn't help but smile as she watched Finnick twirl Annie around. If anyone deserved to be happy, it was them.

"You wouldn't think a wedding would be possible in a war." Johanna snorted as she watched the married couple.

"I didn't think they would allow such things in Thirteen," Juniper added. "I can see what Haymitch means when he says they're strict."

Juniper let her eyes graze over to Lucy and Haymitch, who were still on the boundary lines, watching the married couple. They looked happy, the two, but it made the Hale woman raise a brow. But she supposed they had always been friends. Haymitch did say Lucy Stevens was the only person he could stand amongst the Victors'.

"Coin sounds like a real piece of work." Johanna rolled her eyes.

"You've met her?"

"Nah," she said. "Heard stuff, though... she's more invested in Peeta than any of us Victors'. I'm surprised she even allowed a wedding for Annie."

Juniper narrowed her eyes as she began to look around. The leader of the rebellion wasn't present for the reception and the woman gathered she was probably with Plutarch, controlling the propo. The Hale Victor wasn't looking forward to seeing her, the woman already having a bad reputation amongst the others that weren't from Thirteen, but she would like to get a look at her just to see who was running the whole war. It would have been interesting to see who Snow's opponent was.

"Oh, don't be such a party-pooper." Johanna rolled her eyes again as she nudged Juniper with her shoulder. "Go dance."

"With who?" Juniper scoffed. "You really think anyone would want to dance with me—?"

"June!" Finnick came up to the two women, interrupting. "Come on!"

"Come on what?" Juniper raised a brow as she looked from a smirking Johanna and Finnick, who had his hand held out towards her.

"You're not going to stand on the outskirts for my wedding," he said as he gently took her hand, clutching it. "Come dance."

"Have fun, Hale!" Johanna hollered as she cackled, walking away.

Juniper had no choice but to follow Finnick onto the dance floor. The rhythm of the upbeat music still remained as people began to join hands, making a giant, spinning circle where people showed off their footwork. Juniper clung onto Finnick and Katniss's cousin, Gale, as they did. She felt sick the entire time and didn't want to participate in the whirling circle, but there was a bright smile on Finnick's face as he stared at the random person in the centre, showing off their moves and so, she swallowed down her complaints.

But suddenly, the jive stopped as people began to disappear off to the side. It was mid-tempo music that enveloped everyone and people began to partner up. Annie went off to the side to talk to Beetee, who was still in his wheelchair, and so, Finnick grabbed ahold of Juniper as he forced her into a dance.

"You and Johanna seem to be getting along now," he said as he twirled the woman around.

But Juniper rolled her eyes as she held onto his hands, saying, "Barely. She's the only person here who doesn't look at me like I'm a wounded animal... or with the fear that I'm going to kill them."

"I don't look at you like you're going to kill me," Finnick commented as they tried to not bump into other dancers.

"Yeah, not you," Juniper said. "I'm pretty sure Katniss's cousin over there does."

"You know, they're not actually related."

"Of course." Juniper rolled her eyes again. "They're too handsy to be cousins. What is he? Her side thing?"

"I don't know." Finnick shrugged lightly. "But whatever is going on between him and Katniss... he's extremely jealous of Peeta. And he's a jerk. He thought I had a thing for Katniss."

"So he's the obsessive type, hey?" Juniper laughed. "I didn't think Katniss Everdeen would be in a love triangle."

"Me neither." Finnick shook his head. "But her love for Peeta is real."

"How do you figure?"

"Everyone just thought it was a tactic to win..." Finnick murmured as he watched Katniss dance with her sister. "But... something happened to Peeta in the arena. His heart stopped and I had to resuscitate him. And when I did, I saw that Katniss was sobbing. Properly sobbing... she thought he was dead and then it clicked—"

"She wasn't faking the love," Juniper finished.

"Hell, she probably doesn't even know it herself, but anyone can see that she loves him," Finnick told her. "But now..."

The man stopped speaking and sighed as a silence drowned them. And suddenly, every thought that Juniper had tried to dispel came back, sprinting towards her mind. It came back in such a flash that the woman had to force Finnick to stop dancing as she clung onto him. She rested her head on his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart as if it would calm her. Puke threatened to rise.

"Are you okay, June?"

"Yeah..." Juniper grumbled, feeling sudden exhaustion wash over her. "I'm fine..."

"You know," Finnick started saying. "Every time I ask that question, you always lie to me."

Juniper blinked before replying, "I'm fine, Finn. Really."

"I can see you're about to drop any minute from exhaustion," Finnick told her sternly as he looked into her eyes. They had stopped dancing and were standing in the middle of the floor, other people twisting and twirling around them. "You don't look well. You're still skinny to the bone. You look dead, June."

"I'm fine—"

"Don't lie," Finnick warned her as he cradled her cheeks. "You need to let it out someday. You can't have it all bottled in. Let Dr. Aurelius do his job."

"I'm not doing this on your wedding day." Juniper shook her head. "This should be the happiest day of your life. I'm not going to ruin it for you because of how I feel."

Finnick clenched his jaw slightly before relaxing it, saying, "I just want you to be happy, June. I want you to be okay... I'm always on your side, remember? I am on your side."

("I'm always on your side, June," Finnick said, clutching her hand tighter. "Always.")

Juniper looked at Finnick, silent.

"You don't have to talk to me about it," he told her. "But at least Aurelius. Or Lucy. Or... anyone you want, anyone you trust—"

Juniper interrupted him as she brought him into an embrace, clinging onto him as she whispered into his ear, "You're the one I trust. I always come to you and you can always come to me... but, Finn, I'm not going to do this on your wedding day. Another time. Just not now."

Finnick replied, "Okay... not today... just whenever you're ready. I'll always be there, June. I am on your side forever. Don't question that. I am on your side."

Suddenly, echoes of gasps rang around the area as Juniper and Finnick pulled apart, looking around to see four people wheeling out a huge wedding cake from a side room. Most people backed up, making way for it as the groom went over to the bride and Juniper seemed to be in awe as she admired the blue-green, white-tipped icing waves that were swimming with fish and sailboats, seals and sea flowers. Peeta most definitely had decorated the cake and by the look of horror and confusion on Katniss's face, it only confirmed it.

("Hell, she probably doesn't even know it herself, but anyone can see that she loves him," Finnick told her. "But now...")

Katniss was dragged away from Haymitch before she could make a scene and they disappeared into the hall, away from the cameras. Juniper could feel Lucy come up behind her, but she quickly walked away as she too began to make an exit. Her head was swimming and she needed to lay down. She could feel exhaustion drowning her and she didn't want to drop in the middle of the dance floor, turning the attention away from the married couple to her.

And so, going into another corridor away from the lenses of the camera crew, Juniper began to try and blink away the tiredness. She had been battling it ever since she arrived from the Capitol, but now, for some reason, it all came flooding back to her. She needed to lay down. What was the way to the hospital ward?

"June!"

But she suddenly froze as a voice echoed around the halls. There were only two people within the world that would ever call her that name and the warmness of Finnick Odair's voice didn't flood her ears. Juniper turned around slowly to see Orion Hale making his way over to her.

"I don't want to speak to you."

"Yes, but I do," Orion argued as Juniper continued walking down the hall, the man following her quickly. "June!"

"Don't call me that."

"What did Snow tell you?" Orion asked. "What did the Capitol say to you about what happened?"

"Go away."

"June, you can't trust everything they say!" Orion tried to tell her. "If you just stop and let me explain!"

Juniper could feel the rage burning up inside her as she turned around swiftly, snapping, "Well, you didn't deny it, did you?"

("... how did you find out about that?")

In. Out.

In. Out.

In. Out.

"I..." Orion said as he stared at his daughter and she managed to see the scars on his face more visibly now. They looked horrendous, as if some monster had dragged their claws down his face. "June—"

"Don't call me that."

"It's your name—"

"Juniper is my name," she told him sharply. "To you, anyway."

Orion took a breath before saying, "What did the Capitol tell you? What did Snow tell you?"

"That you were part of some rebel cell. That you had an avoidable punishment." Juniper began to stalk towards him slowly. "That you were warned. That you knew the Reaping was rigged because of you and Olsen's treason—"

"Olsen is your mother."

"I really don't care because she's dead, isn't she?" Juniper sneered. "And so is Justice. You knew and you didn't do anything to stop it."

"How could I?" Orion sighed.

"How could you?" Juniper raised her brows in disbelief. "You could have ran! Snow gave you a warning. He never gives warnings—"

"That's why I didn't believe it!" Orion stated. "That letter. I didn't know it was real—"

"So it is true then?" Juniper began to say. She could hear her voice starting to rise in volume. "You did know that someday me and Justice would be Reaped?"

There was silence.

In. Out.

In. Out.

In. Out.

"Yes."

"I can't believe it." Juniper snickered as she turned around, beginning to walk away, but her father grabbed ahold of her bicep tightly.

"June—"

"Don't call me that!"

"Fine. Juniper!" Orion hissed. "You don't understand."

"What don't I understand?" Juniper questioned. She could feel the tears brushing her bottom eyelids as well as the rage filling her up. "You knew! You knew that one day me and Justice would both be Reaped because of your actions and when you were warned, you did nothing! You stood watching! What is there to not understand?"

"You don't understand that Snow never gave warnings," Orion replied. "He never gave warnings so when I got that letter, I didn't believe it."

"Who else would send you a warning like that?"

"I don't know!" Orion shouted back. Tears were glossed over his eyes. "But yes, it is true. I did know. But... Juniper, I was drowned in guilt everyday since it happened. I regretted not running."

"So?" Juniper scoffed. "Justice is still dead! He's gone and he's never coming back because you stood there like an idiot! He's dead. You can't just regret something like that! And I suppose you never actually thought I could win, huh?"

"Of course not!" Orion told her. "I knew the minute your name was called that... I didn't expect you to come home, Juniper."

"But I did," she said. "I survived. I came home. I was the only person alive with twenty-three dead. You didn't expect it."

"No, I didn't." Orion tried to calm himself down. "I really didn't. And I'm sorry. I am so sorry, Juniper—"

"Like that's going to help!" Juniper spat. "I've spent nearly my entire twenty-years of living looking up to you! Trusting you! Idolising you! Loving you! And then this comes to light. How are you even here?"

"I... Plutarch knew I was in a rebel cell," Orion began to explain. "He knew what me and your mother tried to do. He contacted me shortly after the Quell was announced to discuss plans. When the arena blew, he collected me and took me here. I've been helping him and Coin—"

"I'm sorry — Plutarch knew about this?"

"Only that I was in a rebel cell. Not the... other part," Orion tried to assure her, though there was a grim look on his face. "That was one of the reasons he asked for you to help in the arena... he wouldn't have, otherwise. Well... unless for Finnick as well."

Juniper could now feel tears streaming down her face. She didn't want to talk to her father. She didn't want to do this. The Hale woman just wanted to go back to her hospital room. She needed her father to go away.

"Just... go away."

But Orion shook his head as he said, "You're still my daughter, Juniper. I told you on your first Reaping that whatever anyone says... whatever happens... I love you. I love you, Juniper."

"But I don't love you. Not anymore."

Orion's face morphed into something that was beyond recognisable.  It was a mixture of pain, disgust, guilt, and regret. But Juniper couldn't question it when she suddenly saw Johanna Mason sauntering down the hallway towards them.

"I can smell the tension in here." Johanna snickered as she stopped to stand next to the father and daughter. "Finnick and Annie are doing a dance and they're all lovey-dovey so I had to leave before I puked... you all right, Hale?"

"Yes," Juniper snapped before turning on her heel, walking away.

"Juniper!" Orion tried to call out, but the woman ignored him as she disappeared around a corner. She could hear Johanna following her, but she clenched her jaw as she began set on finding the way to the hospital.

She didn't want to talk to Orion. She didn't want to talk to Johanna. She didn't want to talk to anyone. Juniper needed the morphling. She needed the hollowness.

She needed to sleep.
