Chapter 14 - Escape ?
Being pregnant and having an aching body does not mix well. I've been walking for about two hours. Mark really did his job making sure I couldn't escape. But I was too desperate to prove him wrong. Too my surprise I see a house up ahead, and I pray that this person can help me.
Once, I get to the front door I ring the bell. I stand there for a few minutes, and hear shuffling. The door unlocks, and it's opened up slightly. An older woman stands there looking at me oddly.
"Hello, may I help you?" I stand there awkwardly, and fiddle with my fingers.
"I'm sorry to bother you ma'am, but can I use your phone? I was kidnapped, and I need to get out of here before he finds me." Tears steam down my face. Just the thought of him catching me scared me. Who knows what he would do.
Yes, I may be carrying his child, but that wasn't going to stop him from hurting me. The lady halts my thoughts, and opens her door. She grabs my arm pulling me inside.
Closing the door behind us, she takes me to her living room. She tells me to sit down, and I take a seat on the couch. I wipe my tears with the sleeve of my shirt.
"Kidnapped? By who, sweetheart? How did you escape?" She questions me worriedly. Looking up I look at her, and the look on her face told me she was truly worried about me.
"I can't tell you. He won't get in trouble, but I want to find a way out of the country. I can't stay here. He will never leave me alone. I have no one.." A tear escapes my eye, I wipe it off with my finger. She moves closer to me, and takes my hand.
"I'm willing to help. But why can't you tell me who he is? Is he powerful?" I couldn't help but look down. Mark wasn't powerful, but the way people saw him they wouldn't believe me.
"He isn't powerful. But I know no one will believe me. He hurt me, and even got me pregnant.." Looking back up I see her eyes widen in complete shock.
"...He what? You must tell the police. You can't let him get away with this."
It wasn't as easy as she thought it was. Mark was never going to stop. He had the upper hand in this situation. I had nothing, and all I could do was leave the country to get away from him. He wouldn't be able to find me once I left.
"I can't. No one would believe me. You don't understand, he has the upper hand in this whole thing. The only thing I can do is leave, so he'll never find me. Please just help me. I promise I'll pay you back once I'm settled somewhere." I sob. I just wanted my freedom back. Squeezing my hand she pulls me in for a hug.
"It's okay, sweetheart. I will help you. But I will have to pull some strings, and it might take a couple of weeks." I nod my head hugging her tight.
"Thank you." I couldn't believe it. I was finally going to be able to be free.
It's been four weeks since I escaped from Mark's captivity. Eunha, my Savior has been working to get me out of the country. Today, was the day I was going to be free. She had been so nice and caring to me. She was like a mother I never had.
She bought me new clothes, and a phone. She had even re-dyed, and cut my hair. So, no one could recognize me. I was so thankful towards her. She helped me out even though I was a total stranger to her.
"_____? Are you ready? We should be headed out now." I grab my bag, and walk out of my room she had let me stay in.
A couple of minutes later, we arrive at the airport. She parks the car in the parking lot, and we both get out. I grab my bag following behind her to the main entrance. I was nervous. I was hoping everything would go as planned.
We had came up with a story, she was my aunt and I was her niece. I had came to visit her, and was on my way home back to New York. I had picked New York, since Mark was from LA. I knew that was out of the question from the beginning. I take my passport out of my bag, and walk up to the front desk.
"Hello, how may I help you ladies?" The customer service worker asks us.
"We're here to pick up my niece's ticket." I smile at him as he nods his head.
He asks for my ID, and passport. I hand them to him, and he looks over them both. He looks from the computer over to my passport. I look at Eunha, and she looks at me smiling. She knew I was nervous. She was only trying to calm me down.
"Um. Miss..your a missing person? You look like the girl who's been missing for about four weeks now. Your boyfriend is worried sick about you." He says finally looking up. I plaster on my fakest brave face.
"What?! Sir, I haven't been missing. I've been visiting my aunt, and I want to go home. Now..if you don't want a problem can I have my ticket or do I need to speak with your supervisor. I won't be accused of being someone else. Which I am not." I glare at him crossing my arms.
He nods his head frantically, handing me my ticket he gives me a slight smile. I walk away, and Eunha follows behind me patting my shoulder.
"Good job." She whispers. I smile at myself feeling proud. When we get to the metal detector line, she turns me around engulfing me in a tight hug.
"Make sure you call me. I want to make sure you get there safe." I nod my head smiling slightly, a lone tear rolls down my cheek.
"Thank you, aunt Eunha" pulling apart we smile at each other.
"And make sure you take care of yourself. We want a healthy baby." I nod my head again, and walk towards the line. I look back waving bye to her. She waves back, and begins to walk away. To my dismay I bump into someone, looking up I see a police officer.
"Sorry." I begin to walk around him, but he stops me.
"_____ _____. We got a call that you were here. Your boyfriend has been looking for you. If we didn't find you who knows what could have happened to you. Are you alright ma'am? Is your baby fine?" I stand there frozen. Did Mark really go to the police, and file a missing person report? Was he insane? I wanted out. I didn't want to stay with him.
"Sir, look I told the worker up front. You have the wrong person. I was here visiting my aunt. And I am not pregnant. Do I have to file a complaint with someone? You can't just go around accusing someone for looking like someone else. Now, if that's all please let me catch my flight." I try to walk away again, but the officer grabs my arm. I look up at him in disbelief.
"How dare you! I didn't do anything. Let me go!" I scream. A whole crowd of people stare at the scene unfolding before them.
"Ma'am, you haven't done anything wrong. But making a fake ID, and passport is considered a crime. Your boyfriend is worried. He's been looking for you, and he's worried about the baby. It's not healthy to board a plane pregnant. Now, please relax and I'll take you to him." He tries dragging me with him, but I get away and run towards my flight door.
I will not go down without a fight. I wanted freedom. These people weren't going to take that away from me. The adrenaline was coursing throughout my system. I needed to get out of here, and finally be happy. All I hear behind me is my name being yelled, and I don't dare turn around.
I make it to the door handing the lady my ticket. She takes it and let's me in, just in time for her to close the door. I walk through the hall onto the plane. I walk through the aisle to find my seat, once in my seat I settle down. My breathing becomes steady, and I feel somewhat calm. I had finally gotten away.
A year later, I had not only given birth to one beautiful baby, but two beautiful babies. I had given birth to my beautiful little girl Lily, and my handsome little boy Keegan. I was surprised when I found out I was having twins, but I was happy.
I had settled into a condo that Eunha had gotten me, and a job working at a homes design company where I worked as an assistant for one of the top CEO's. I had a great life so far, and I was free from Mark. The only great thing that came out of being stuck with him were my son and daughter.
Walking into the kitchen, I grab two bottles. I walk back into their room to see their attention is glued to the cartoon playing on the TV. They were so adorable. I had to admit they had a lot of features from their father.
I did feel a little bad sometimes that they didn't know who their father was. If Mark did all of this like a normal person, I would have gave him a chance. Everytime I was with him, it always felt like a horrible dream. Nightmare after nightmare, I never knew what was real and what was fake.
Breaking my thoughts there's a knock on the front door. I hand each baby their bottle, and rush towards the door. Looking through the peephole I see no one. I move away and shake my head. That was strange. I begin to walk away, but there's another knock. I walk slowly towards the door, and look through the peephole.
"Who is it?" I say loud enough for them to hear.
There's still no one standing in front of the door. I move away slowly, and stand there for a minute. I become nervous, and scared. Who the hell was knocking on my door this late? This had to be some sick joke.
I lived in a good neighborhood that had great schools. There were no crimes in my area, and it was a safe place to live. So, it had to be some teenagers playing a joke by knocking on people's doors. I take a deep breathe, and decide not to make a big deal out of this.
I walk away from the door, and into the kitchen. Turning on the sink I wash the leftover dishes. As I'm on my second dish, there's another knock on the door again. Annoyed at this point, I turn off the water and walk towards the door. I look through the peephole, and wait.
Too my surprise I see a figure come into view. Stumbling back my heart stops for a minute. A lump forms in my throat, and I'm in denial. He couldn't have found me. I can't let him know I'm here. My mother senses kick into gear, and I jet towards my children's room. I grab their bags that I always have ready in case something like this happens.
I pick them both up and jet towards the safe room I had installed in my closet. I lock my room door, then open my closet and lock that too. I walk towards the back of my walk-in closet, opening the big door.
Once inside I close the door, and it automatically locks itself. I put the babies in their playpen, and they fall back asleep. I sit on the roll chair, turning towards the video screens displayed on the wall. Each and every room was covered in the condo expect the bathrooms of course.
Sometime later, I guess I had fallen asleep. I sit up looking back to check on the babies, they're still sound asleep in their playpen. I turn back around looking at the screens. To my horror Mark is in my house with my landlord. I sit up staring at every move they make.
I knew I was safe. My landlord knew nothing about my safe room, but I knew one thing. He was definitely getting sued for letting this intruder into my apartment. Soon my cellphone starts to ring, picking my phone up from the table I see it's my landlord. I look at the screen to see them standing back in my living room. His cellphone is on his ear, while he talks to Mark.
I click on my home screen, and go into my calls. I block out unknown numbers, and my landlord's number. When they were gone I was going to call the police. I sit and wait until they leave.
A few minutes later, they left my apartment. I pick my phone up dialing 911. I talk to the police, and tell them about everything that happened. I get off the phone waiting for them to send over someone.
After a while of waiting two officers come to my apartment. I get out of my chair, and walk towards the door. I open the door making sure to lock it behind me. The babies will be safe, I won't be gone long.
Just as I'm about to walk out of my room, I'm pulled back and thrown onto my bed. I go to scream, but my mouth is covered. The weight of their body weighs on me. I shut my eyes tight trying not to cry. I wasn't going to let them see me cry.
A shiver runs down my spine hearing the voice of the person I've been trying to hide from all this time.
"Seems like you've gotten beautiful since the last time I saw you. You've also done well for yourself. But you and the twins belong with me. Now, your going to go to that door and tell those officers that it was just a false alarm." He harshly says.
My heart pounds in my chest erratically, I wasn't only scared for my life but my babies. But there was no way I was lying to the police. I knew my babies were safe, Mark had no way of getting to them. Breaking my thoughts, he grips my chin tight. I open my eyes staring back into his dark brown ones.
"You better not do anything funny. I may not be able to use the babies against you. Which I would never harm. Those are my kids as much as yours. But I will threaten your life. Try something _____, and you won't see them ever again." I swallow the lump in my throat, nodding my head frantically.
This was a never ending battle I was never going to win with him. I was forever attached to him in every way possible. I had kids with him, and he was my first. He was never going to leave me alone.
