Prologue

Sria's POV.

I ran through the woods, my long brown hair streaming behind me. The crisp fall air stung my blue eyes, and I panted for breath, but I kept on. Running was the best way to relieve the constant pain I found surging through my back day to day.

When I felt my knees about to give way, I slowed my pace and sat down on a fallen cedar tree, lost in my own little world. I did not notice the air suddenly shimmer violently, and the fallen leaves swirl about my bell-bottom jean-clad legs.

So when a small young man, about four feet and five inches tall, (a few inches shorter than myself, at five foot one) stood in front of me, also gasping for breath, I looked up in surprise.

I gave a small yelp and stood up, looking the strange young man up and down. He had curly brown hair and sparkling blue eyes. He seemed about my age-- seventeen.

"Who are you?" I asked, my eyes widening.

He said nothing.

My brow creased in confusion. "Who are you?" I repeated cautiously. "Do you speak English?"

He nodded. "My name is Meriadoc Brandybuck, but you can call me Merry, if that is easier for you," he spoke with an English accent, though I couldn't see how... we were both currently located in a small town in Northern Wisconsin.

"Okay then, Merry, how long have you been here?" I asked, not quite ready to trust him. "Where do you come from?"

He was silent, a pondering look plastered across his lightly tanned face.

Merry's POV.

"Where do you come from?" the strange girl asked, looking me up and down carefully. I suddenly felt very self-conscious, and didn't look her in the eye. "Why do I feel this way?" I asked myself. But she interrupted my thoughts.

"Well?"

I thought quickly. My cousin Pippin and I had been running through Farmer Maggot's corn field, laden with a sack of carrots, and then nothing. I felt nothing, I saw nothing. Then suddenly I had ended up here, in front of this strange, but oddly attractive girl.

"I-I'm not from here," I started, unsure of what to say.

"Obviously." she said, folding her arms across her chest.

"Well, I-" but I never finished. suddenly the air began to shimmer around me and the girl, and then everything went black.

So, how was my first chapter? I know it isn't very descriptive, and it's pretty short, but keep reading! I promise it'll get better!
