The Smelly Scheme
Both Y/N and Leo had passed out on the bed just minutes after their conversation. It wasn't like either of them to have such an easy time falling asleep, but maybe letting that much off your chest was a sedative in itself.
Leo woke up far too early, four o'clock at the latest. Out the window of the Argo, there were signs of the world beginning to wake up, the sky slowly erasing away the stars with a dim light. But, the ship itself and everyone inside were still asleep. Y/N too was completely passed out, sleeping peacefully like there wasn't a worry in the world. After a few heavy breaths, Leo climbed back into the bed where he'd spent the night and fell back asleep for just a few more hours.
The second time he woke up, it wasn't nearly as tranquil as the first time. Annabeth was dragging people out of their rooms like a drill sergeant, making them eat breakfast and then pack their supplies. Y/N was jolted awake by Leo thumping onto the ground and then crying out in agony. She raised her arms in surrender when Annabeth threatened to also throw her off of the bed, and to her luck, the blonde backed off and moved on to Jasons room.
Sluggishly, the roommates made their way around the ship eating scraps of food and picking up supplies, all the while muttering random things through full mouths to each other.
When the ship finally laded, Annabeth called everyone up on deck. "Okay, first things first, we need to split up into groups."
"Ooh!" Leo jumped up excitedly. "Me and Y/N!"
"No," The blondes face fell in an unimpressed manner. "Hazel and Piper, Frank and Leo, Y/N and Jason...and Percy and I will go together."
"Really?" Leo complained, throwing his arms in the air. "Of course you and Percy get to go together. How about I pick the groups? I bet you won't be so happy with them." He huffed. "No offence Frank."
The tall, broad boy just shrugged. He didn't care and was just tired. He wanted to go back to camp and sleep.
"Leo, it's one mission. Relax." Piper asked her friend, for just this once, to chill out a little bit. She knew he could hardly spend a minute away from Y/N, but quests were serious. He of anyone should know that.
"Ok," Percy sighed, rubbing his forehead. "Is everybody good? Can we get moving?"
"I think so," Hazel seemed to look around at everyone to ensure they looked alive and well, everything they needed either in their hands or in backpacks slung over their shoulders. "Let's go scout!"
Walking off of the Argo and through some heavily forested land on their way to the scout spot Annabeth had picked, Leo stumbled alongside Frank. He was having a difficult time focusing on both where he was walking and Y/N and Jason who were happily treading along beside one another. They laughed and talked the entire way. All Leo wished was that he was in that conversation. That he was the one laughing and shoving her shoulder.
Now stationed in the place Annabeth had told them to be, Leo and Frank hunkered behind a large boulder where they could see the entire crater down below them. This island was small, but it had a massive indentation in the centre with barren, dry cracked rock. In the odd place here and there, sprouts of grass fought to make a home, only to be trampled on by giant monsters every so often. Inside the crater, Chiron had definitely been right about there being an army forming. For who? It was still impossible to tell, but it was probably some secondary wave from the war against Gaea.
To Leo's right, Hazel and Piper hid out behind a massive pile of old logs. Up ahead and to his left, Percy and Annabeth crouched behind a tall, sharp stone, both mulling over a map. Straight forward, a couple of small ridges ahead, Y/N and Jason kept their cover behind another large boulder. The two talked and kept passing a telescope between one another.
"Wooaaah," Frank suddenly fell back on his butt and scooted a few feet away. "Are you okay?"
"Fine. Why?" Leo asked, not even taking his eyes off of Y/N and Jason for one second.
"You're kinda...y'know." Frank mumbled.
Leo took his eyes away for a moment and looked down on himself. "Oh." He sighed. His body was smoking and shoulders were just flickering ever so slightly with small flames.
"Look, I know you like her. But you've got to get yourself under wraps..." Frank finally found the courage to sit back up. "When I first liked Hazel, it was really hard to play it cool and not be so fixated on her all the time. But what you're doing now? It's going to get you in trouble."
"You're still alive after all of that with Hazel. I'm sure it'll be the same for me." Leo argued.
"That's not what I'm trying to say." Frank groaned. Leo, more often than not, was more than difficult to reason with. "It's just that you can't let liking Y/N get in the way of what's really important here. One slip up and this could turn into a quest where we're fighting for our lives. Do you really want that? Because this could be a simple in and out mission where we—"
Franks voice slowly drained off and Leo found himself focused on something else. Just to his left was a purple plant. One he recognized from camp. What were the odds? These plants had strong medical properties, but was also a pranking tool used by the Stolls far too often. If you lit these things on fire, they would stink. Stink so bad, it could make people sick and drown their clothes with stench which lasted for weeks.
So, naturally and without thinking, Leo sparked a flame. It lit.
"AH!" Leo cried, just loud enough so all of his friends could hear but not the monsters below. "Frank has diarrhea! It reeks!" The scrawny boy ran through the thick grass and over uneven ground with his fingers clamped over his nose. He made a break straight for Y/N and Jason.
"Jason I need your emotional support!" He cried. As he ran, his eyes began to water from the smell and his vision became a little blurry. Unfortunately for him, that caused him to misjudge where Y/N and Jason were. Suddenly, he found his feet up in the air, no longer striking the ground.
Then the realization hit him. He'd run right off of the ridge and was likely plummeting towards the crater. The worst part wasn't that gravity was taking him full speed down a hill into a giant earth hole full of monsters, possibly triggering a sudden war. It was that he already knew he'd made a huge fool of himself and the others would not be happy with him.
Leo always had bad luck. But today? Someone or something intangible was looking out for him. Before he could be violently thrown all the way down the hill, he found himself face to face with a tree. Quite literally as the last thing he remembered before blacking out was seeing the bark of a tree racing towards his face at light speed. He woke up and came to consciousness at the worst of times since Jason had him high up in the air, being flown back to the Argo. In the sudden fear the moment had shocked his body with, he nearly leapt out of Jasons arms and screeched at the top of his lungs.
The ruckus he'd caused already alerted monsters below of their presence. But that scream of his was like a wailing siren drawing monsters right towards him and his friends. In the moment, like countless others in his life, Leo wanted to smack himself dead in the face.
Y/N watched from below as Jason flew through the air with a wiggling Leo in his arms. She couldn't believe what he'd just done. This quest had just turned from harmless to life threatening in a matter of seconds because of one impulsive, irresponsible move. The girl stood up to her feet, knowing everyone would likely be heading back to the Argo in order to flee. Sure enough, as she looked around, she saw Frank making a break toward the forest they'd come from. Percy and Piper were doing the same, but Annabeth was the only one who stayed standing. Y/N caught her gaze for a split second and the girls lungs collapsed.
The look on Annabeth's face was one of pure anger, frustration and disapproval. Y/N couldn't help but feel like the blame was being put on her for Leo's actions.
Sometimes, Y/N felt like running away. It was a fairly normal thing. Right now, she was feeling that. The pressure of someone else pushing her away, the feeling of rejection and disappointment.
Despite all of her boiling emotions, she knew she still had to make it back to the Argo alive. So, she did what she knew best. She ran. Ran over a few small ridges before she could connect back onto the most worn path which led back into the forest, and in theory, to the Argo. Annabeth had left before her, and was way closer, so she'd likely already be back. That wasn't an issue. What was though, was the audible monsters now trailing Y/N.
Through heavy breaths and uneven steps over tree roots, Y/N drew her weapon and prepared to face whatever was chasing her. Listening carefully, she could make out three individual things behind her. Based on the enormous sounds their steps send reverberating against trees, she could safely assume they were large.
That didn't phase her, though. With Y/W, she whipped her body around and immediately struck down the first monster. It had worked, but it also slowed her down. What was better, losing one monster, or still having three but having a larger buffer zone? Surely the others would take out the monsters if they followed too close as she ran towards the Argo. Right? They had her back?
Y/N wasn't so sure about that. She knew Leo would look out for her, but he could be locked beneath deck for all she knew. And though the others were genuine and loyal seeming, she hardly knew them. It would be pretty easy to forget someone you didn't know well in the middle of a panic, trying to flee.
The second monster was too close now. Just the same as before, Y/N took it down with one strike. But, that left her with even less room between her and the last pursuer.
Now completely out of breath, she forced her body to keep moving forward. Her heart beat in her ears and at any moment her legs might just give out.
Heartbreak ripped through Y/N's chest when she finally reached the clearing where the Argo had been stationed. It was already up in the sky, moving north. Straight away from her.
Defeated, she gave up running. Stumbling over her own feet, she turned to face the monster with a grim look on her face. It was twice as large as the others and looked a hundred times less forgiving.
Jason fell in behind Y/N just in time, taking out the last monster with a bolt of lightning before it got to her first. Y/N then, without even really realizing, found herself up in the air, breaking out of the tree canopies and heading right for the Argo. She understood Leo's reaction now, to having woken up to this from formerly being unconscious. Though, sympathy wasn't going to get him anywhere once the others confronted him.
