Confusing to Say the Least

Korean = Italics

English = Normal

A/N - If you haven't checked the previous chapters since I updated, the main character's name is no longer Dawn. I changed it to Elena, since Dawn was only a temporary name anyways. Thanks! Also the pictures at the top will all probably have nothing to do with each chapter. They are just for you to admire.

Elena's Pov.

I really didn't sleep; I should say couldn't sleep. How could I after what happened yesterday? Plus if anything were to have happened last night neither Nina nor Ken would have even noticed. I can't be mad at them though. Ken practically had a concussion and a sprained ankle last night, and I was proud of how well Nina has taken it so far, though she shouldn't keep it all bottled up. Well, the sun was already rising and I think they maybe had about five hours of sleep, and as much as I would like to let them sleep in, we need to move.

Crap! I didn't even think about calling my own or Nina's parents. I pulled out my phone from my back pocket and tried calling or texting, but there was no service. On top of that, the battery was at 7%. Of course this happens! I shouldn't have let Nina watch so many videos on it in the car. We'll have to get to a phone or at least find food somewhere soon. Well, time to wake up for them.

"Rise and shine, Sleeping Beauty! The sun is shining and this zombie is happy to see ya!"

Nina woke with a start at the mention of the word 'zombie.' Ken....well, he looked ready to murder someone.

"I think I'll go and find some walking stick for Ken. Nina, you can stay here with him for a bit."

I sped walked off to the trees. There were plenty of sticks for sure, but all around nine inches long and half a centimeter wide. They would be great walking sticks for Ken. Honestly, it wasn't even a forest, but more like a few tall shrubs on some dry grass. Ken will have to make do with me as a crutch. Great. And I thought Nina would slow us down enough. I walked back.

"Did you find a stick?" Nina looked up at me from beside Ken.

I handed her the nine inch one. "Yes. This one."

"Really, Elena? This isn't a walking stick."

"For a Ken doll it is." She finally cracked a smile. At least I accomplished something.

I looked towards Ken with downcast eyes and scratching the dirt around his feet with a stick. He probably is having a hard time adjusting without his members in a place he doesn't know with people he does't know who speak a language he barely even knows. I'll make it work and try to cheer up both of these mopey children. I crouched in front of him.

"How is your ankle?" I asked while pointing.

He rotated it and winced. "Bad."

I nodded and took off his shoe to inspect further. It was swollen to twice it's regular size and looked painful. What is there to wrap it? I'm not ripping my T-shirt, but I could rip off my hoodie sleeve. Thankfully it was thin and easy to rip apart into three strips.

"What are you doing?!"

I didn't answer him, though I understood him, but continued to wrap his ankle tightly, but not so tight that there was no circulation. It may hurt, but it was necessary, since he can't rest it at home.

"There," I said while putting his shoe back on him, "hopefully that will work for now. Maybe we can find some medical supplies somewhere on the way. I'm sorry I couldn't find you a walking stick, so you'll have to lean on me for now." I stood up and offered my hand to him. He took it with a grateful smile and got up. With his arm over my shoulder and mine supporting him behind his back, we continued South with my amazing sense of direction. Just kidding! We used Ken's phone compass.

8:30 AM      August 19

"I'm hungry and I want bacon." Nina has been saying things like that for about half an hour already.

"I am too, Nina, but you need to have patience. Hopefully we'll find food somewhere."

Food. I practically worship food. Honestly, I'm craving some bacon too, some sausage with a few pieces of French toast with powdered sugar sprinkled on top and syrup drizzled over the whole plate....

"Elena. Elena!" Nina was waving her hand in front of my face and Ken was giving me an odd look. I must have looked so great staring into space probably drooling at the thought of food.

"Hm? What is it, Nina?"

"Look," she said while pointing in front of her. "There's a farmhouse up ahead. What should we do?"

There was indeed a farmhouse ahead, though a bit old and hidden in some trees. There didn't seem to be any life nearby or even any animals, but there was always the possibility of zombies nearby.

"Well I think we should inspect it, but I can't be the only one to decide. Ken," I turned my face to him as he leaned on me, "should we go?"

He looked at the house and seemed to be thinking intently. He then looked at Nina in concern then at me as if asking if she will be alright. I nodded and tried to look reassuring. I guess it worked, because he replied with a quick nod.

"Okay then. It's decided. Nina, you stick with me. We need to find food, supplies, hopefully a walking stick, medicine, a phone, and hopefully other clothes because ours are practically trashed."

It was true. With all the running yesterday and slipping in the mud I don't even think the zombies could tell we weren't one of them.

Please be safe.
