Alphabet Soup....Part 2

Elena's Pov.
I honestly don't know where the guts to kill that zombie came from. I just saw it standing above them and didn't think twice before I was charging across the living room and embedding the ax head in it's skull. If I hadn't wandered into the back yard near the wood pile, I....don't want to think about it. It was now getting dark and we had been walking as fast as we could away from the house, not wanting to know if there were any more people rotting around. My back and arms were already sore from swinging the ax full force and my hands were starting to chafe against the wooden handle. Thank God I didn't have to hold up Ken's weight anymore, but then that meant I could now look at him which wasn't healthy for my heart either. He also seemed to be getting too comfortable around us since he started to hunch over like an old man and whine about being sore or something.
"Naneun apeuda!"
It was actually quite funny, plus he seemed to be trying to make Nina laugh. How did they already form a bond in the short amount of time I left them alone at the house? Well, it is Nina we are talking about. She loves everyone and everyone loves her. Apparently you don't even need to speak the same language to get along with her as proof of Ken.
"Hey, Nina." She looked towards me. "Are you feeling fine or sore anywhere? Can you go on for a bit longer before we stop for the night?"
"Yes. I'm fine for now. I'm just hungry again, but I think Ken needs a rest." She giggled. "He's already turning into an old man."
Ken seemed to sense her laughing about him and stepped up his act even more, causing Nina to practically roll over laughing. Even I was trying not to laugh, but we needed to move a bit faster.
"Come on. Just a bit farther and then we can rest for tonight." I picked Ken up from his practically parallel position to the ground and pushed him in front of me to start him walking faster, but of course he, being the immature two-year-old he is, resisted my pushing and stayed in place, practically resting on me.
"Yah! Move, you big baby. You're freaking heavy!"
"'Yah?' I'm oppa. I am older. What is...your age?"
"Fifty-two. Now move."
"Fifty-two?" He didn't seem to know how old that was, so I wrote the number with a stick on the ground. He just rolled his eyes at me in unbelief.
"Fine, I'm twenty." I wrote it on the ground as well.
"Twenty? I thought you were like seventeen." He looked up at me. "You are not seventeen?"
"Nope. I'm a solid twenty out of ten. Nina is a ten out of ten."
"So I am oppa." He smirked in triumph.
"Whatever...yah! We've been wasting too much time already arguing about who is the ajusshi here."
"'Yah?' Again?!" I -" I cut him off with my hand and pushed him forward causing him to almost fall over. He'll be fine...I think.
I walked in the front while Nina prattled on to Ken in the back who proved to be a very good listener if he was even listening. She was talking about her dog back home, then she would go on to talk about her friends at school and what she was planning to do for her birthday. I really don't think she will be able to spend her birthday, which is in three months, the way she wants to. I don't even know if she will ever see her friends or family again. There has to be some sort of base or some sort of asylum for zombie apocalypse survivors somewhere. We just need to get there and hopefully they will have some information on our families. We hadn't heard of the zombies until we saw them just before Dallas which means they started somewhere around there or we would have been warned. So there has to be some group of people or base already forming somewhere in Texas to reciprocate the coming of this new nation. The only problem is that Texas is too big to just wander around in the hopes of finding something soon....
"Elena. Elena!" Nina grabbed my arm. "I was calling you for a while. I think we need to rest soon. I'm tired and I think Ken's ankle is starting to bother him."
I looked and he did seem to be limping more than usual, though he was trying to cover that fact up. And I thought Nina was the oblivious one. I guess this experience is forcing her to pay more attention to other things. Ken was messing around beforehand, but now that he was actually in pain I guess he didn't want to complain. I'll have to keep an eye on him then.
"Thank's Nina for telling me. We can stop under those trees just ahead."
"Aye, aye, cap'in." Nina saluted me and walked on ahead. She's the cutest.
Once under the small clump of trees, we settled down and I started to get out some food. There were two cans of alphabet soup and I really don't know why I grabbed them anymore. I remember them not having that much flavor, but I always loved playing with the letters. I actually don't want to eat it anymore. Well, wasting food is practically a sin, so I'll make it. Digging through the backpack I found the small camping pot.
"How do I make a fire again? Help."
Nina seemed just as clueless about it as I was, so I turned to Ken with a bit of hope. He made an OK sign and started picking up some sticks, seemingly confident, but I don't know if I should trust a two-year-old with fire duty. He brought back a variety of sizes of sticks and some brush and began clearing a circle from any grass. He seemed like he had done it before, so I will hope for the best. Okay, maybe he is a fully capable adult since the fire was a success, but I can't let him know that. He gets cocky enough as it is. Nina and I clapped for his success and he bowed dramatically.
"Now food!" Nina was probably the most excited.
Surprisingly the soup wasn't half bad, though that was probably because we were all dead tired and hungry. Ken didn't seem to like it that much, but it was fun watching him eat it, but mostly because he would start to make words out of the letters. He would misspell some on purpose and some on accident. Of course Nina loved that and had a field day correcting him. Which reminds me, we still don't know how to communicate that well with each other.
"Hey, Ken?"
He looked up. "Yes?"
"Can you teach me Korean? We still don't know how to talk to each other."
Ken's Pov.
I keep on forgetting that I can't talk to either of them. It would be nice to teach them Korean, but I also need to learn English, since I am in America right now.
"Yes," I replied. "Then you teach English."
Elena seemed happy at that suggestion. "Okay. Tomorrow we can start. Right now we are all too tired."
She started packing things back in the bags, but I noticed she kept wincing as if her hands were in pain, so I grabbed her wrist to look. Her hand was raw and red with some blisters, probably from the ax handle. Her other hand I saw was the same, though she tried to hide it. I sighed. She was all worried when my ankle was hurt and when Nina was in danger, but she couldn't even take care of herself. I grabbed the first aid kit and took out some ointment and bandages, motioning for her to give me her hands which she reluctantly did. I proceeded to clean her hands with the antiseptic wipes and put ointment on her blisters. Her face was red from embarrassment and probably from the fact that I was the one helping her, though I won't point it out and embarrass her further. When I was wrapping her hands, she finally looked up at me and gave a small "thank you."
"You're welcome. Honestly, you need to take care of yourself more. You are so focused on our safety that you don't even notice when you are injured. How will you take care of us when you are injured, hmm? You can lean on others you know. I know that you can't physically lean on me right now with my ankle being the way it is, but you can ask for help. I might just surprise you. Even Nina today surprised you a few times when she wasn't being clumsy. That's one of the things I learned early on when I joined VIXX. You can't rely on yourself for everything. You have to trust your members in a group and learn together. So trust me please."
I finished wrapping the bandages as best I could, but I held her hand still to gain her attention so she could see the sincerity in my eyes. I know she didn't understand probably anything I had said, but she seemed to get the emotion and what I was trying to say, so she nodded softly and looked down, taking her hand out of mine.
I am starting to really miss everyone now. Elena and Nina are nice and have done so much for me, but I just feel so out of place right now and like I am just intruding, so I will try my best for them and for my friends.
Nina's Pov.
Yes, I saw everything. From them holding hands and Elena blushing to Ken scolding her. Honestly they would be so cute together, though I don't think Ken likes her in that way....yet. I mean, we barely just met him. Elena, however, is totally stricken with him and I know he's her bias in that group. Was it Vicks, like the muscle rub?
Elena sat next to me after that whole thing that happened, so I decided to tease her a bit. "So Ken is cute. You like him don't you?" I nudged her a bit.
"Oh, stop it." She gently pushed my arm. "It's not like that. He is my bias in VIXX, but I would have cared just as much if he had been anyone else."
I rolled my eyes. "So you are telling me that if we had saved some old man, you would have been staring at him every five seconds like you are doing now?" She started a bit and looked sheepish. "Don't think I didn't see you today telling yourself not to look at him walking behind you."
"Okay. I do admit he is attractive, but you don't need me to tell you that. Anyone would think the same. This doesn't mean I like him in that way. I am his fan, but I barely met him yesterday. That's not enough time to fall in love with someone."
I giggled. I thought she was supposed to be the smart one here. "I never said you were in love with him. You are highly attracted to him though, but I'm pretty sure with us travelling together for a while and you two practically being alone for much of it, you could start to like him."
Elena sighed. "I know that and it scares me. I don't want to fall for him just because he's the only guy around. My biggest fear, though, is that maybe he would feel attracted to me only because I'm the only girl near his age around him."
I see her point, so I won't tease her too much now, but I still think they would be cute together, even good for each other. Elena keeps Ken focused but still loves his silly side. He is more observant than he looks and is able to see if Elena needs something, because she is too stubborn to tell anyone. She needs someone to take care of her and I know I am too oblivious most of the time or too clumsy to help her as much as I want. I seriously need to work on that, especially since we are in a situation where I need to concentrate. I'm still pretty shaken up about everything that's happening so far, but luckily it has been daylight and I could distract myself with other things. I just know, though, that it will be hard for me to sleep tonight.
"Nina." I looked at Elena who called me.
"Yes?"
"You can sleep next to me tonight. I don't want you having nightmares and I usually like holding a pillow or something when I sleep."
I sighed with relief. "Sure. I was starting to get scared that I wouldn't be able to sleep anyways."
The ground wasn't that comfortable and we didn't have pillows, but we were all so tired that it didn't matter anyways. Elena and I quietly giggled at Ken's snores. Thankfully they weren't too loud. I did wake up once that night from a nightmare, but was soon asleep again with Elena stroking my hair softly.
