Chapter 37
Compared to the last memory she had before losing conciousness, waking up to peace and quiet was a huge relief. Then the rest of her senses returned to her. The bitterness of medicine had her coughing and thinking to spit out the remainder of the offending taste, but other thoughts began to flood into her mind in the form of questions.
Beautifully flowing white hair was right within her view, and with it came the person she wanted to see the most. An empty cup was in his hand, and his other arm remained placed across (y/n)'s back to keep her upright. (Y/n) recognized her cloak hanging from his shoulders as well. Add had his eyes locked onto her with a range of emotions displayed in them. A small smile, barely present, showed up along with the relief making itself know from within storm in his eyes.
"How are you feeling? Do you remember everything?"
(Y/n) blinked at him. She was indeed able to recall their trip into the garden and everything that happened there. "Where's Synn? Is he alright?"
"The brat is fine. I took care of him." Add had his dynamos take away the cup he had been holding. "Are you still experiencing any symptoms of any sort? Headaches? Sensitivity to light? Anything?"
"I'm alright. What about you?" She examined him and could tell that something was off, but she couldn't pinpoint what it was. He did not hold the same demeanor that she was used to. "Did something happen?"
Add didn't answer at first. He simply pulled her into a hug to hide from her concerned gaze. "It's been five days," he began. "Five whole days. You didn't get any better or any worse. It's been a long time since I've felt powerless, (y/n). Making changes to the elixir to suit everyone in Eldemyr had been easy, but altering it to stop whatever was happening to you..." Add held her closer. "It was probably the most stressful thing I've ever done."
"Five days..." (Y/n) rubbed Add's back as she returned his hug. "I'm proud of you then. Sounds like you've already saved Eldemyr all on your own."
"No," he pulled away from her to look her in the eyes again. The storm in his own had returned, and his eye slightly glowed. Was it anger? Sorrow? (Y/n) could not tell this time. "I didn't save Eldemyr. I saved you." He averted his gaze. "There's one more thing that I have to do before we can go home. You can't help me either. I need you to stay here and rest."
"You're not going back to the tree by yourself, Add." She didn't have to do too much investigating to figure out his intentions.
"You couldn't even get past the spores," he pointed out with a slight frown. "That's not why you can't go. I'm sure you know that I'm capable of finding a way around that."
"I can look after myself just as well as you can, Add. We've talked about this."
"I know. This isn't about whether or not you can handle yourself in the face of danger. I'm well aware that you are more than capable. I like that about you." He smiled to himself at the brief thought that crossed his mind. "But this is different. Kassias intended to have you go to the El Tree and put a stop to the Alterasia's source because he still thinks you're a killer at heart. I still don't get how he could compare killing a plant to killing another elf or human, but he's already placed that label on you. I refuse to let him get away with that. I know who you are, and I'm not going to sit here and let someone change that just because they don't understand you."
(Y/n) couldn't find the words she wanted to say to him. What exactly happened while she was unconscious?
"I'm doing this alone because I'm standing up for you, and I believe in the person you are trying your best to be. Just like you did for me. I'm going to get ready to end this as soon as I can. If possible, I'd like to go today now that you're awake."
"Today? What time is it right now? You still haven't explained to me what happened."
"The time isn't important. It's early morning, plenty of hours left in the day. You got hurt, and I've decided not to hesitate on my final goal anymore. That's all. You don't need to worry yourself with any details. Let me handle it. I want you to be able to leave everything to me. I can take it now. I'm capable." Add took hold of her hand. "To tell you the truth, I just want to go back home so we can live our normal life again. The one we had before we moved to Velder. The one we shared prior to even Altera. Hell, I'd even take what we had in Elder as long as we count what happened in Bethma."
(Y/n) laughed at him. The storm in his eyes gave way to a bit of light when he heard the sound of it. "You're excluding Raven," she reminded him.
"He can take care of himself," he muttered as he looked off to the side. "Everything in Bethma plus Raven. How about that?"
"Sounds okay to me. Will we get to take walks?"
"Anytime. We can walk anywhere be it day or night," Add immediately replied. "I want you to live as you dream. If you wish it, I'll make it your reality. I have the power to do it, and I will."
(Y/n) reached up and caressed his cheek and traced over his scar. "But what about you? What do you want?"
"I already have what I want."
"I mean it. Be honest, Add. There must be something I can do."
It was a little unexpected for Add to lean forward and kiss her without warning. He pulled her towards him to prevent her from escaping, but it wasn't like she was trying to anyway. Her hand reached for the strands of his hair to play in, but he pulled away from her just as she reached it. He lingered nearby to speak into her ear.
"Your love is more than enough," he said in elvish. It shocked her to hear him say those words, for she hadn't recalled teaching him that phrase. And then he continued on to surprise her even more. "I give you a normal life, and in return you give me the same. What else would I need to ask for?"
(Y/n)'s stare remained fixated on Add even as he gave back her space. "When did you learn all of that?"
He didn't bother trying to hide his smirk of satisfaction. "It matters not when but why. I told you I'd learn elvish if I had to. I simply felt it was necessary to know those exact words," he proudly explained. "You shouldn't ever underestimate your genius, (y/n)." He got up from the side of the bed and began to pull off her cloak. "I want to give this back to you."
"Keep it until you've stopped the Alterasia. That way you'll be able to give it back for sure." He stopped before the cloak was off his shoulder giving (y/n) and knowing look. Rather than saying anything more, he crawled onto the bed with her and made himself comfortable by laying his head across her lap. "Are you alright?" she asked him.
"Certainly better than before. I just want to be here with you for a moment before I leave." Add found her hand and guided it towards his hair. "I've missed you."
The storm in his eyes was gone now. (Y/n) smiled down at him noting that whatever change she had sensed in him was one for the better.
For what seemed like an eternity, they remained in one another's presence making small talk. Add avoided any topics dealing with the current state of Eldemyr, so their time was spent solely with positivity. (Y/n) knew that the fantasy was over for the time being when Add grew uncomfortably quiet.
"Is it time for you to go?" Her question brought a sad look to his face, but he nodded as best as he could from where he lay. "Then I'll see you off."
(Y/n) watched him get up and put together a small bag of supplies that he might need. When he was ready, she walked him downstairs to the door.
"I'll be back in no time," he assured her, turning back to stare for a moment. His dynamos were perfectly still and gave away nothing of his inner thoughts.
(Y/n) smiled. "I'll be here waiting."
