Chapter 34

He did it. As Add had expected of himself, making an elixir to reverse the DNA structure of the spores had been easy enough. He sat back on his dynamos which he had been using as a chair to keep them from ruining his focus. The bed not far behind him was starting to become a temptation now that night was closing in.

As soon as they had returned to their temporary residence, both (y/n) and Add had gone into full concentration mode to complete the cure as accurately as they could on such short notice. All Add had needed was a little time and the information from his mother's research. The only problem that he had now with the supposed cure was whether or not it worked effectively on elves. As far as humans were concerned, Add could guarantee that the elixir would do its job. However, without much prior knowledge on how elves differed from humans down to a chemical level, Add could only speculate what kinds of changes he would need to make to the current formula.

He had taken the time to examine (y/n) a few times in the past whenever she felt under the weather, so he thought to base everything off what he had learned from her. The medical patches he designed to assist her with the heat had apparently worked far better than he anticipated, but he wasn't sure what made them work so differently on full blooded elves compared to (y/n). In the end, he stuck to a fully human directed cure that he would need to alter to increase or decrease its effectiveness.

A call from (y/n) who came to his door took his mind off his current dilemma. "Hm? What is it?" He looked away from his lab setup. "Did Kassias send back any updates on the patient?" She shook her head, denying any sort of message from the elf in question. "Huh?" He should have given them more news by now. In fact, Add was expecting a status report hours ago, but he couldn't afford to leave his work at the time.

"You haven't taken any breaks all day." A brush was in her hand.

He gestured for her to come over to him. "You've been working just as much as I have. I think we should both take a break." He pulled over the chair that he was supposed to be sitting in and waited.

Whether it was retrieving anything he asked for or entering the status reports from his patients into his computer system, (y/n) had been doing her best to support him. Lunch and dinner went by in a blur during which they hadn't bothered to take a moment to appreciate the food. Neither of them had gotten a real break and went all day multitasking anything that they did. As things were now, his progress would have to wait until morning. If he didn't let his mind rest, Add ran the risk of making a mistake which he hated just as much as being weak.

The feeling of the brush had Add almost melting on the spot. Right now, more than anything, he wanted to fall onto his bed and lay there to revel in the day's accomplishments. How pleasant it would be to hug (y/n) in his sleep and feel his heart be put at ease from her presence alone.

The moment lasted just long enough for Add to be satisfied. He had his dynamos shift so that he faced (y/n), and he slipped the brush out of her hand.

"What?" (Y/n) blinked before offering him an expression of curiosity to give in return to his stare. He leaned against the desk and kept up his admiration with his face against his hand. "What's got you smiling huh?" He would do anything, absolutely anything to keep this happiness between them. He leaned towards her and reached out a hand to cup her cheek, hesitating to close the distance between them. It wasn't as if he hadn't kissed (y/n) before. It never became any easier for him than the first time around.

"Oh," (y/n) looked towards the room door. "Someone's knocking downstairs."

Add quickly retreated, stood up with a huff, and brought his dynamos to line up behind him. "You stay and rest. It's probably Kassias with the report."

"Synn's been delivering the reports actually," (y/n) called out as he slipped out of the room. He missed the sad glance she gave him.

Sure enough, once Add got downstairs to the door, Synn was standing there with a cheeky grin on his face. "Where's your assistant? Is she home?"

"Have you lost your mind?" Who did this kid think he was showing up at his door and asking for (y/n) as if Add himself wasn't standing there. "Where's the report that you were supposed to bring?"

Synn tilted his head to the side. "Hm? Report? Kassias told me not to worry about it and sent me home early." The boy straightened up with pride and pointed at himself. "I snuck out and didn't get caught by Ilphas! Now hurry up and let me in before she starts looking for me."

Add flicked his wrist to bring his dynamos into action effectively blocking the door before Synn could squeeze by. "Go home."

"Hey, I thought you were nice! Do you know how hard it is to sneak past Ilphas? She'd have taken my bow for a whole week and make me study with Kassias! That old man's so boring that I'll fall asleep before he gets to any of the cool stuff!" Synn crossed his arms. "Fine, I guess you just need me to say the password then, right?" Add deadpanned at him. "The blue lanterns are shining their brightest."

"You can let him in, Add. He's supposed to be here." Add flinched when he heard her voice not noticing (y/n) sneak up on him.

"Hmph." He stepped aside and moved his dynamos.

"He said he would come by when I told him that I saw a fairy in the garden," (y/n) explained. "I forgot about it."

"Well we have to hurry. The Elders will let you two off easy if you go into the gardens since you two don't know the rules. Sincee I'm still young, I'll only get a warning. Maybe a lecture or two." Synn laughed at his own craftiness. "This is probably my best chance to get my own fairy. You two are going to help right? Aren't there things in there that you need? From the garden?"

Add could name a few plants off the top of his head, but he was tired. If anything, he wanted to go across the street and drag the boy to Kassias assuming the elf was even there. "Right, Kassias should still be looking after the patient I singled out," he thought with a sigh.

"You're going to make us walk all the way there?" (y/n) wondered.

Synn tilted his head. "Well yeah. How else are we getting there? I know a nice quiet path through town. No one will look twice if we go that way. Not even at you, doctor. Promise." He put his hands together and bowed his head a bit. "Now can we please get going? This is a once in a lifetime opportunity," he begged.

"How are you going to even navigate the garden? Only certain individuals have access to it and even fewer can ward of the enchantment surrounding it. We'll get lost the moment we step foot into it," Add spoke. In truth, he did actually want to investigate the garden thoroughly. His scans picked up some concerning results when he had gone through it earlier, but he hadn't the time to bring up his discovery. He intended to tell (y/n) about his findings, but the cure had been his top priority. "There's a sickness going around, and you're worried about a fairy of all things." The look on the boy's face shifted into temporary seriousness.

"If I get sick, then so be it. At least then I'd get to..." he stopped himself. "Nevermind. I know everyone's worried about that. Maybe my fairy can help when we find one. You'll get your plants or whatever, and my fairy can help you out. We got a deal?"

"(Y/n), what do you think?" Add asked. He could tell that she had been thinking about something since Synn's arrival.

"I..." her eyes narrowed as she stared at the floor. "I think we should go. There's something important there. I don't know what, but that fairy I saw couldn't have been trying to get my attention for no reason."

"You heard her." Add tilted his head towards the door. "You're getting in the way of my work, so hurry it up. I'm about to go past my curfew for this. It better be well worth my time."

Until next time you miraculous readers!

P.S. The book actually is about to end soon, so the rest of it will be available Saturday. That's why I didn't do the extra chapter. Should have made an announcement for that...
