Chapter 26
Add was handling business affairs with the nobles that he had to meet up with. Raven was asleep, probably exhausted from his most recent job. The only ones awake in the home right then were Dynamo and (y/n) herself. However, she was working too.
"Dynamo, move tomorrow's patient visit to whatever time is avaliable this afternoon. Add has somewhere to be tomorrow during that time."
"There are no avaliable times in the span that you have requested. A medicine delivery that has been marked as optional is within that time frame. Would you like for me to remove it?" Dynamo displayed the schedule details from holographic computer drone that Add created.
"Yes, put it on mine instead. I can make the delivery myself." As Add's assistant, she had her own responsibilities. Her official title was Supporter which gave her the freedom to do anything that Add himself couldn't do. As of right now, she was in the kitchen preparing breakfast for when Add returned from his morning meeting. Multitasking was a bit difficult for her, but she managed. "After you make that change, let me see the updated data for Raven's condition. If I can help ease Add's workload in any way, I'll do it."
"It's nothing different than before," Raven said from where he stood at the doorframe of the kitchen. (Y/n) quickly shot an elven curse at the scare. Raven did not make a sound when he walked through the house, and although (y/n) had gotten used to it by now, it still surprised her every now and then.
"Good morning, Mr. Nasod Arm."
"You can't just sneak up on people like that!" (Y/n) looked back at him with the beginnings of a frown. He stared back without a hint of remorse. Sometimes (y/n) wondered if he found it funny to scare her like that. "I didn't know you were already awake. Breakfast will be done soon, so you don't have to help this time." (Y/n) went back to cooking as she spoke. She had started earlier than usual on purpose so that Raven wouldn't help her. She had nothing against Raven's assistance, but he often snuck and used the heat from his nasod arm to cook things to perfection. It only severed to worsen his condition, and when confronted about it, Raven always shrugged and claimed that such a small amount of damage wouldn't kill him.
"Did Add finally take you out while I was gone?"
Curiosity kept (y/n) from directly answering. "You're not usually one to ask about those types of things. He must have complained while he was doing your check-up yesterday."
"I didn't actually have to leave for a day. I stayed at a local inn and told him that I had a job to do." (Y/n) blinked in surprise. "Just think of it as a favor."
"You really do treat him like a younger brother, don't you," (y/n) said with a smile to herself. Raven kept silent. He had opened up to both her and Add about the memories of his past. He wanted nothing more than to look out for them and avoid repeating such a tragedy. Raven had practically dedicated the rest of his life to ensuring their prosperity.
"An annoying little brother," Raven could be heard barely saying. Perhaps he forgot that (y/n) could hear even those sorts of murmurs.
"Master Add has sent a message," Dynamo announced. (Y/n) looked over to the the little nasod's display interface to see what was shown. Yet another job to do. "Would you like for me to place this on your schedule instead?" She could handle a simple inspection as long as Dynamo went with her to record all of the data that Add needed. It was no risk for the nasod to be out in the open now that Add used various forms of his technology in his medical treatments. Most people assumed Dynamo was a mere drone rather than a rare survivor of a highly intelligent race of machines.
"Go ahead and put it right after the medicine delivery." She turned to Raven. "Food's ready by the way." Nothing beat home-cooked breakfast especially when it was shared with family. "Add will be back soon. Right on time too."
"You two seem to have a lot going on recently. What's with all the meetings?" Raven asked while fixing his own plate.
"Add came across an important opportunity that will give him more people to treat, so we've been increasing our work load to have enough results for the people he went to meet with today. If everything goes well, we'll get more funding and the new patrons will refer their colleagues to him for treatment as well." Even more high ranking officials in Velder were beginning to take great interest in Add now that he had gained so much at his age in such a short amount of time.
"You don't look too happy about it."
"Huh?" (Y/n) didn't even realize that her expression betrayed her inner thoughts. "I'm happy for him, yes. I'm just wary of any the dangers that it might bring. The more allies someone makes, the more enemies that follow."
"Master (Y/n) has been diligentl-"
"Shhh!" (Y/n) cut Dynamo off before he could even try to finish that sentence. "You can't say that out loud, Dynamo."
"If it becomes too much for you to handle alone, you should let Add help you or at least talk to him about it," Raven said, choosing to ignore the classified information that Dynamo almost leaked. "And don't forget that I am indebted to both of you. Use me for whatever you yourselves can't do."
(Y/n) felt a bit uneasy when she realized what he meant by that. "I don't think you should willingly put more blood on your hands even if it's for our sake. If it ever comes down to it, I'll just have to make the decision myself. I know all too well how to kill. If it means protecting my family, then I'll do it. For now, just scaring people bold enough to try anything is enough."
"I don't think that's what you're actually worried about." Raven's stare suddenly made her a bit uneasy. "You're not worried that something will happen to Add. You're worried that something will happen to you." (Y/n) met his gaze unable to speak. He was right, but she wondered how he knew. "When you have the time, we'll spar. You'll want to keep your skills sharpened. Going out at night and scaring people with those rocks of yours doesn't count." As he finished speaking, Add returned. The tired doctor trudged into the kitchen with a bit of a temper. His presence effectively ended the conversation that (y/n) and Raven were having.
"How did it go?" (y/n) slowly asked him.
Add sat down with them to eat. A medical drone carrying his bag of supplies remained hovering nearby. "They accepted all my terms, but won't let me start any work with them until the end of the month." He leaned towards the table and propped his face against his hand. His dynamos began to spin in a circle behind him. "They want me to give a speech in Velder's capital for their guests from Hamel, and meet with a group from outside of Velder. I wasn't interested in the slightest, but I agreed so I could get what I wanted."
"As much as you deal with those types of things, a little speech and another meeting shouldn't hurt you," Raven commented.
Add let out an annoyed growl before hiding his face in his hand. His weapon reacted with a few electrical sparks. "That isn't the issue." He glanced at (y/n) almost apologetically. "It's who I have to meet that became the problem. (Y/n), I'm sure you remember telling me about that group from Eldemyr. The one that's adamant about acting for the sake of all people." Her blood ran cold and she gave Add wide eyed stare. "They sent a party here to negotiate with me. If I had known it would be them when I was told about it, I wouldn't have agreed." His voice was a little shaky because of the decision, and he continued to avoid (y/n)'s gaze.
"It's okay if you have to meet with them, Add," (y/n) reassured him. "I already forgave Night Saver long ago. I still don't like them, but this is strictly a business deal. It's not like we have to be friends with them."
Add looked at her with the beginnings of a frown on his face. "Even if you're okay with it, I'm not. I don't believe for one second that they came all the way out to Velder to talk to me about medicine. It's to my understanding that elves have their own treatment methods for the sick or injured." (Y/n) gave him a short nod of confirmation. "I'm going to take over your duties until they leave," he told her.
"No you're not," (y/n) immediately denied him. "That's too much for you to be doing by yourself, and you know that better than anyone here. Most of it is just deliveries. I can handle it. You know I'm capable of taking care of myself. Dynamo can even go with me."
"I refuse." Add calmly looked her dead in the eyes. "You're staying here. Don't leave the house without Raven going with you, and no deliveries."
"You're putting your own health at risk. At least let me help with the paperwork."
"No. I'm doing this for a reason."
Raven finally spoke up. "At the very least, you can explain what that reasoning is instead of expecting us to blindly follow you."
"It's trust, Raven. You don't have to follow anything."
"Apparently you don't trust (y/n) enough to let her help you. Since this is a trust issue now, then you can trust us with your explaination."
"It's not that hard to figure out Raven. I don't have to spell it out for you!"
"Hey, cut it out. We don't have to sit here and agrue about this," (y/n) spoke up.
"It's not an argument. I'm asking the proper questions. You can't keep letting him get his way. That's the whole reason that you're stressed to begin with. Neither of you are telling the other what exactly is bothering you. Being vague about it isn't going to solve anything."
"What do you know about what we're doing, Raven?" Add hissed. "When you weren't here, there was plenty of communication without you sticking your nose in my business! Stop trying to fix what doesn't need to be fixed."
"Warning." Dynamo stopped the escalating situation. "Master Add, your blood pressure has reached unsafe levels. Please take precautionary action."
No one said anything for a while. The three of them sat at the table and finished their breakfast in varying degrees of discomfort. Dynamo kept a close watch over all three of them until Add broke the silence.
"Night Saver took her father. I'm not letting them take her too," he calmly explained to Raven. "I'm not letting anyone take you, (y/n). No one is taking anything from me. From any of us." Add propped his head against his hand. "This life that we have here is worth protecting. I'm strong enough to do that on my own now, but I'm not doing this alone. It may appear that way, but I'm still asking for help from both of you. It will make my objectives far easier if you stayed home and looked after yourself. You've been worrying. Worry leads to anxiety which can cause mistakes. Even for someone like you, a mistake can be fatal. Raven, you're the only other person here that I can trust with (y/n)'s safety, and vice versa. I will manage my work just fine as long as both of you are safe. You're annoying, but I'd rather you not die on me any time soon."
Add's gaze remained on the table even after he finished speaking. (Y/n) recognized his current expression to be one of deep thought. "You don't have to say any more than that," she spoke up. It snapped him out of formulating more of his thoughts. "I trust you." She looked over at Raven, but the man kept a frown on his face.
"He called me annoying. I'm not letting him off the hook that easily."
"And you are," Add grumbled. "Did you actually want me to lie to you?" (Y/n) rolled her eyes at them.
"Didn't you call Add annoying when he wasn't here? I did hear that, you know."
Raven only briefly looked surprised before he turned his head aside to stare at the wall. "I owe you anyway, so a simple guarding job is nothing I can't handle..."
"Thank you." His polite reply caught Raven off guard. "I have quite a bit to do, so I'll be getting to work now. (Y/n), you're officially on vacation, so I better not catch you filling out a single document or sneaking out to see any patients in my stead." He stood up and walked over to pat her head. "Everything will be fine. I'll make sure of it."

I realize I didn't put this in a previous note, but Raven's job path here is Veteran Commander. The Supporter title given in this chapter doesn't refer to a job class though. I just needed a role to place the character under. Until next time you incredible readers!
