Chapter 3

Back again with another chapter! Let's see what happens now in this here chapter!
____________________________________

Edward was tired of his father's stupid drills. All of his time spent learning about nasods and nasod technology all for what? Edward's father was never satisfied with what Edward knew. He could be pushed to his limits and still his father wouldn't acknowledge his progress. He'd always say, "That isn't good enough," or "Disappointing," and that was it. His father didn't really spend any time with him other than that. Edward was entirely ignored by his father unless he was being forced into harsh studies.

His mother was different though. She was a nasod researcher too, but she was much better than his father. She cared for him and she made time for him whenever he came to her. The only problem was that she was not always home, so he couldn't always go to her whenever he wanted to. That was where (y/n) came in.

It had been two years since Edward met the girl. He learned that she suffered from some sort of memory loss due to her unnatural psychic powers. She had very little control over the power which could be the reason why she had such a bad memory. Despite that, she was Edward's one and only friend. She did everything she could to make him feel better whenever he wasn't happy.

Since she had no control over her psychic power, she also couldn't be seen by anyone but Edward. It wasn't all the time that this happened. It was only when she was afraid and had the urge to hide. She didn't like the ability for some reason. Perhaps it was somehow related to her mother. (Y/n) wasn't too fond of her mother and had told Edward not to ask about her, so he didn't.

"(Y/n)! Where are you?" Edward whispered as her turned a corner in the mansion. The six year old was missing at the moment. She tended to disappear whenever she felt sad or thought about her mother. Lucky for Edward, he knew the three places she liked to go. He'd just checked her second spot so that left the last one. Edward ran to his room and closed the door behind him as he went in. "(Y/n), I know you're in here. Come out from under there. I have a gift for you," Edward said as be sat in front of his bed.

"I don't want to. Leave me alone," (y/n) whinned.

"You've been crying haven't you," Edward said.

"No," (y/n) lied. Edward could easily tell that she had been crying even without seeing her.

"Oh really? Then show me. Come over here and show me," Edward said. (Y/n) crawled from under his bed and sat next him. "You were crying." (Y/n) just glared at him and looked away. "Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you mad. Here. I told you I had something for you," Edward apologized as he pulled an item from his pocket and handed it to her.

"What is it?" (y/n) asked as she looked at the small box in her hand.

"It's a music box. If you open it, it'll play a tune for you," Edward explained. (Y/n) curiously opened the small box and found that it did play a tune to her. She laughed in delight at the little trinket. "My mother gave it to me a long time ago but I want you to have it now."

"Thank you, Edward," (y/n) said with a smile. Before the boy could say anything, (y/n) hugged him. Edward was a little startled, but he hugged her back. "Can we visit your mother so I can thank her for giving this to you in the first place?" (y/n) asked when she let him go.

"Sure, but she still can't see you and you never say anything when we go there," Edward said as he stood.

"I still have a fear of mothers. I can't help that," (y/n) said with a sigh.

"It's okay. Let's go before I'm forced to study again." Edward headed out the door, and the two of them walked side by side down the mansion's halls no longer worried about being seen. Apparently, Edward's father had stopped putting his trust in the staff and fired them all. That was after two of the messenger servants came back with a letter. Whatever it said, Edward's father didn't like it. There was no staff after that and Edward occasionally wondered what had happened to them.

Since neither of his parents hardly, if ever, ran into him while being in the mansion, (y/n) played with the music box as they walked, letting its song replace what would otherwise be the sound of their footsteps. "Hey Edward, I know you don't really like your father that much, but do you ever worry about him?" (y/n) asked.

"What do you mean by that?" Edward questioned.

"Well, I know you told me that he does things to you like sticking you with needles and stuff. Doesn't that make you worry about him? Like, I don't know, that something might be wrong with him?" (y/n) said as she closed the music box in the middle of its song.

"Actually, yes. I worry about him sometimes because he's still my father. If he didn't torture me with so many drills and research, I wouldn't be so far ahead in the world of nasod researching as I am now. Believe it or not, but I'm going to create my own nasod device someday and I'll show it to you too," Edward said.

"Sounds promising. I'm glad you're my friend. I don't know what I'd have done without you around. We'll be friends forever okay," (y/n) said.

"Sure. Of course we will," Edward said as he ruffled (y/n)'s hair. They walked in near silence now. (Y/n) was about to open her music box again but Edward stopped her.

"Do you hear that?" Edward asked. They listened for a moment, and Edward was able to hear the sounds of arguement. It was his parents that were arguing. "This way." He led them to the room that he heard the conversation coming from. "Stay quiet no matter what," Edward whispered before they got to the door. (Y/n) nodded, and they went to the door standing near it with their backs to the wall while carefully listening to the conversation going on in the room.

"I just don't get it! Why didn't you tell me?!" his mother was saying.

"I knew you'd react this way Grace. You wouldn't have allowed me to go through with my objectives. This is going to protect our lineage," his father said.

"Of course not, Asker! Our son is not to be made into a weapon! He's a child!" Grace snapped.

"Then what did you want him to be huh? He can't be a proper nasod researcher if he isn't..." Asker was saying.

"A weapon? Is that what you were going say because that's not the answer. Edward can be whatever he wants to be! You know what, I knew I should have done something sooner. I trusted you with our child. It seems I shouldn't have," Grace interrupted.

"He'll be a masterpiece once I'm done with him," Asker reasoned.

"Is that all you see him as? Just a tool? He's our son, Asker." Grace seemed distraught in the matter. Edward heard the grief in her voice. It hurt his heart to hear his mother sound so hurt. Without thinking, Edward slid down the wall and sat on the floor.

        "What was that?" Asker questioned.

"I don't know. I hope it isn't Edward. He doesn't need to hear any of this," Grace said. Her footsteps came towards the door. Before Edward could get up himself, he was suddenly surrounded by a magenta glow and lifted up to the ceiling. (Y/n) was in the magenta glow as well and she was floating next to him while clutching her music box close to her. Just then, the door opened and Grace peeked out of it looking left and right for anyone.

To Edward's relief, she didn't even think to look up and she went back into the room, closing the door behind her. (Y/n) set them back down without making a sound and the two of them walked away without a word to each other. "Edward, I think we should still go to your mother's garden. It's pretty there," (y/n) whispered once they'd gotten a good distance away from Edward's parents.

"You can go ahead. I think I'm going to go to my room," Edward declined her offer.

"Okay. I'll see you later then," (y/n) spoke. The two parted ways and it was painful to know how much Edward wished he'd gone with (y/n) to his mother's garden that day...
