Chapter 16

(Oh look, a meaningful author's note) I decided to keep the point of view consecutive so yeah...

Add had backed himself into a corner and kept his dynamos in a certain place to keep her away. (Y/n) didn't exactly know what was going on, but what she did know was that Add had done something and gotten hurt doing it. He still didn't meet her gaze, and she refused to just leave without an explanation. She had sat right across from him simply waiting until he was ready to talk. Add hadn't taken his hand away from his eye the entire time, and it made (y/n) wonder what he was hiding.

"Let me see it. I might be able to make something to help out," (y/n) finally said. She didn't need to be more specific. Add knew exactly what she was referring to.

        "No," he denied without hesitation.

"Stop being so stubborn. I can't help you if I don't know what's wrong," (y/n) reasoned. Add only glared at her with the eye he wasn't covering to which (y/n) only sighed in response. "You'll at least tell me what happened won't you? We're friends, so I deserve to at least know that much." Add stayed silent for a while before he decided to tell her anything.

"I found what I needed to impliment the time travel equation onto my dynamos. It didn't take long for me to figure out how to time travel either," Add began.

"You went to find your mother," (y/n) concluded.

"Yes, I did, but my calculations weren't correct enough to get to her. I ended up traveling several more times and each time that I did, I always failed. I returned to this time a few seconds after the time I left. Soon after, I noticed something was wrong..." Add was explaining.

"You're eye. Something happened to it. It looks like one of Esper's eyes now doesn't it," (y/n) interrupted after reading his mind.

"It isn't like Esper's eyes!" Add snapped.

"Then let me see it," (y/n) demanded. She had raised her voice without meaning to, but Add was being a little bit too stubborn at the wrong time. Her expression must have reflected her frustration because Add stopped glaring at her and slowly moved his hand away from his eye. It was indeed the same as Esper's. The sclera of his eye had turned black just like Esper's eyes. (Y/n) couldn't stop her surprise from showing.

"Stop staring at it," Add said as he closed his eye and covered it again.

"Wait, no, you don't have to do that," (y/n) whinned, upset that she had ruined the progress she had just made.

"Yes, I do. It's unsightly and could be contagious," Add said as he looked away from her.

"You were looking through my potions and elixirs for some reason though. Was it for a cure?" (y/n) said, not bothering to read his mind again. It was a serious invasion of privacy that (y/n) didn't do very often.

"There is no cure. I've already tried looking for one," Add muttered.

"It's only been...about five hours. A cure can still be out there somewhere. You just need more time to look for one before giving up," (y/n) said.

"All I have is time. Traveling through it is easy and I reused those five hours too many times to count already," Add explained. The two of them fell silent again before (y/n) said anything else.

"If there isn't a cure...then why were you still looking through the elixirs?" (y/n) asked, hoping the answer wasn't anything terrible.

"Because I need something...I need it to help me deal with the pain. It won't go away...nothing helps," Add said quietly. The eye that (y/n) could see was lined with tears as Add held back his conflicting emotions.

"I can help you. All you need to do is let me." (Y/n) slowly reached out to him as she said this.

"No. Stay away from me. You can't help me. I don't want you to," Add adamantly declared.

"Why? I'm not something so fragile that I can't even help my best friend when he needs me! I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself too! And despite that, you still think otherwise," (y/n) snapped.

"I know you can handle yourself but that's not why I don't want you near me," Add shot back. She could practically feel his despair now.

"If you know that, then why don't you trust me?" (y/n) asked as she inched closer to him. His dynamos were dangerously close to her now meaning she could easily take damage if she were to make any wrong moves.

"(Y/n), please...stay away from me," Add pleaded. He tried backing himself even futher into the corner but there wasn't anywhere else he could go.

"I would be a terrible friend if I gave up on you like this. I'm not a terrible friend, I'm your best friend. I will help you whether you want me to or not," (y/n) said but Add shook his head at her. He stopped covering his eye again and looked at her with both of them open as a sign to show her that he meant her no harm by denying her help.

"I don't want to hurt you," he finally admitted. Before (y/n) could say anything, he continued to speak. "If things keep going like this...if I keep failing...I'll become him and it will lead to me hurting you. I can't let that happen," Add said. (Y/n) couldn't exactly reassure him in that particular matter. She hadn't known that this would happen and she couldn't be sure if Add would become Esper or not. They were drastically different from what little information they had on Esper, and (y/n) wanted to believe that they would remain drastically different.

"I can't promise you that you won't become Esper, but I will promise you that you will never hurt me. I will do everythingin my power to prevent that from ever happening. I only recently remember, but I was given a task by your mother, I won't fail it. I'm going to help you," (y/n) said as she used her finger to move one of the dynamos out of the way. One by one, they dropped to the floor. Knowing that Add would now accept her offer, (y/n) went right over to him, sitting as close as possible without a word or protest from him.

"I don't deserve you," Add muttered. "All of this is my fault somehow..."

"Don't go blaming yourself for this. You're right about one thing though. No one truly deserves anything really, yet they get those things anyway. You're just lucky to have a best friend instead of just a normal one. It's my turn to take care of you," (y/n) spoke in hopes of cheering him up. Add seemed fine until he suddenly shut his tainted eye and let out a strained sound of pain. (Y/n) caught his hand before he could cover the eye. With her free hand, she pressed her palm against Add's forehead and used her psychic power to block out the signals in his brain that caused him to register pain.

Add opened his eye and looked at her, not saying a word. He didn't need to. (Y/n) understood him perfectly without the use of words or even reading his mind. He pressed his head to her touch and closed his eyes almost in content. "Thank you." He'd spoken so softly that (y/n) almost didn't hear him. She flinched when he took her hand from his other wrist and held it in gratitude. Was this really gratitude? She was sensing an emotion that took a form different than gratitude.

Before she could figure it out, a flash of purple light suddenly made its appearance behind her in the room and with it came Esper. "No! I was supposed to stop you before any of this happened. How did you escape a second time! That's impossible, you...you couldn't have known!" Esper snarled at (y/n). His appearance shortly scared her half to death.

Add, however, seemed to expect it. His eyes shot open and he looked to Esper with fear, anger, and sadness all at once through that one changed eye of his. (Y/n) stopped her use of psychic power but the moment she did, she saw Add wince and she didn't hesitate to put her hand back to ease Add's pain. Esper noticed this and smirked.

"Still getting used to it, I see. You don't need (y/n) for that. We'll get over it eventually," Esper sneered as his dynamos circled him, waiting for their command to attack. "(Y/n), run. Get out of here, please," Add said but she wasn't afraid of Esper anymore. He'd probably been the cause of this. He knew that Add would have to go through all of this, yet he still wanted to take away Add's one and only friend. He could have even warned Add or stopped him, but that was not Esper's intention. This upset her more than anything.

"It's sad to see that you're still trying to keep her around. I've already told you that she is the cause of our failure. If you really want her to run, go ahead and let her. You already know that while she's near you, I can't attack her. I could risk harming you as well...but if she wasn't near you..." Esper was saying. Then he backed into a portal and disappeared only for (y/n) to find herself being pulled into a portal that had appeared nearby. Add attempted to stop this, but her hand slipped from his before anything could be done. (Y/n) involuntarily yelped (not screamed because she was not a damsel in distress) when she was pulled into the portal. She found herself being held by Esper who was now standing on his own dynamos in front of Add who was clutching his eye.

"There's no saving her this time. You'll just have to watch her die," Esper said, but (y/n) wasn't about to let that happen. She was tired of not being taken seriously and intended to prove to Esper that she wasn't a pushover of any sort. Using what information she had about how the brain's pain receptors worked, she turned Add's current predicament against Esper. He suddenly let her go and held his eye, the same one that Add held. (Y/n) had linked their pain together somehow and it seemed like Esper couldn't handle it. When she was free of his grasp, (y/n) went to Add and ended her psychic control over Esper's pain receptors.

Esper didn't hesitate to leave through another of his portals and did not reappear this time. "And don't come back!" (y/n) called after the missing fiend. She looked to Add finding that his tainted eye was spilling false tears down one side of his face, red and seemingly painful. (Y/n) didn't hesitate to stop Add's pain receptors again. "How much more suffering will have to happen for Esper to leave us alone?" (y/n) thought. She had to do something to stop this...but what?
