~¶Twelve¶~
~Might Be Getting What I Want Afterall~
Weeks rolled by with Nicolas putting great efforts into getting Dolores to trust him enough to be a friend at least but with Adelina appearing out of nowhere whenever they got to be alone, it proved his efforts to be fruitless. The amount of stink eyed looks she threw his way was enough to discourage any guy from Dolores forever and yet he was still willing to pin after her.
Was that how obsession felt like? He reasoned within himself. Since they both shared that kiss at her house, she had purposely avoided him, leaving no chance of them even 'accidentally' bumping into each other.
All day, he spent it sitting alone and coming up with various excuses, all which turned out lame after much thinking, to get Dolores to see him. Carlos, on the other hand, showed no hesitance in teasing him about being a prude for not being bold to approach the cute brown haired girl his infatuation grew for.
During recess, he had told that Carlos he needed to study, which the latter knew was a lie. He hated reading. Truth was, the way his head quickly filled up with thoughts of a certain blue eyed beauty was alarming and he needed to clear it before he became truly obsessed. As if in response to him, her laughter rang out, peal after peal, across the large stretch of land and filtered like music into his ears.
He first thought that his brain was playing tricks by replaying the sound of her laughter but when he caught sight of her friend, he knew she was nearby.
An unfamiliar feeling of warmth spread throughout his body catching him unawares. He craned his neck to catch at least a glimpse of her sunny smile. As if craning his neck wasn't enough, he slowly sat up in his seat as his book lay on his laps forgotten.
He watched with awe as the wind blew her brown mane about her face and how she struggled to keep it from going into her giggling mouth. They were talking animatedly about something that made her eyes light up as she spoke while flailing her slender arms about.
He found his gaze fixed unto her lips as she burst into another fit of giggles with Adelina slapping her in the arm. He recalled how she had at first kissed him back shyly and how she leaned back into him without resistance right before her best friend had walked in abruptly. He recalled the angry flush of red across her cheeks and tips of her ears as she stammered for an explanation.
"Hey, lover boy." The pebble that struck him in the forehead forced out a string of curses from his mouth. When he came to, he realized both girls were staring at him.
"What's with you staring at Dolores like some lost puppy?" Adelina shouted again, tossing another pebble in her hand.
"Oh, shit." He muttered when he saw they were walking toward him. Inches to where he sat, they stopped to observe him. He spared Dolores a glance and thought he saw her cheeks color faintly.
"Yes?" Adelina impeded his line of vision with a cocky stance. "My eyes are not on her face."
He sighed wearily. "I need to talk to Dolores. You've been making it hard all week to do that. I apologize for having kissed her but I do not regret that I did. Best memory I've ever kept." He said the last statement with his eyes still in her direction even though Adelina was standing in front.
Green eyes narrowed down to slits as she stared in a thoughtful manner before deciding to move over. Nicolas' heart, against his will, leaped in excitement at seeing Dolores from up close once more.
"Five minutes." As though there were no other options for her, Adelina walked away to provide them privacy.
"Hey." He sent her a brilliant smile as he stood up, ignoring his book that dropped to his feet at that moment.
Her eyes followed the book and she bent to pick it up. "Here." She stretched it toward him. "And about Lina, I'm sorry she threw that pebble. I warned her not to."
He raised a hand to the sore spot he had completely forgotten about in her presence. He could not ignore the dull ache it caused but did not want to let it show while she was still standing right in front of him. "I take it she's still pissed about the kiss."
She couldn't help the sheepish grin that spread across her face. "I guess so. Even though she said it didn't matter to her."
"Right." He simply replied. His brain worked nonstop for the next perfect words to say instead of coming on to her too strong. He shoved both of his hands into the pocket of his trousers while rocking on the balls of his feet.
"We have a film show later tonight. You're coming?" He heard himself blurt out. Even a kid in kindergarten was doing a better job at trying to get the attention of his crush. Of all things, the class project was all his brain could muster. He felt his self-confidence drain like something sucked it out with a big juice straw.
Her eyes seemed to twinkle at the topic he had brought up. The fact that one's face could brighten up at the mention of books or school work was beyond him. He hated school and everything that had to do with it. Except for booty calls he got from the girls and a means of escape it served to him, he wanted nothing to do with it. For a brief moment, he wanted to end the discussion with the nerd but watching her talk, in some weird type of way, lifted his spirits.
"I'm not sure how it's going to be but I don't think I want to stay for the film show. I just wanna be at home, sleeping in and eating dino nuggets." Her expression showed that she shared same sentiments without him even saying anything which gave him an angle to direct his discussion.
"If you don't mind, we could like, I don't know, maybe go out for ice cream or watch a proper movie. Like a night out." He spelt out carefully.
She laughed again, causing his belly to do double flips. "As tempting as it sounds, I'm not so sure Lina would appreciate that idea."
There she goes again with the Lina talk, He thought.
No matter how he tried, he couldn't comprehend the relationship between the two girls. They looked nothing remotely alike yet always acted like inseparable twins would. "Are you both like relatives? Maybe she's your sister or your cousin, or maybe a step sibling?"
She giggled, hiding the pretty smile behind her hand. "Nope. We are nothing close to being related by blood."
He was going to get to the bottom of the mystery between them. "Are you both dating then?" He blurted out suddenly.
Dolores's eyes widened in horror. "Goodness, no!" Then she threw her head back, laughing at how absurd he sounded. "I'd have been long dead if that happened. You know how possessive she gets whenever you're within four feet of my location."
He couldn't help the shit-eating grin that spread across his face. "I'm just in time then."
Her smile slowly faltered. "Just in time for what?"
"I like you, Dolores, and I want us to go out together." His reply sounded too straightforward and he almost kicked himself when he saw her frozen expression.
Dolores burst into laughter and then replied. "Yeah, right. I'm also your biggest fan."
"I really am serious. I take back everything I said in the past and I apologize for my actions. I was stupid and immature."
"I'm glad we have something we both agree with." She stated sarcastically.
He groaned aloud in frustration. His plan didn't go through as he thought it would. "Can you please stop being sarcastic?"
"Look, whatever you're trying to do is not working. Go try it on someone else." She wasn't fazed by his imploring eyes.
He closed the gaping width between them by stepping closer to her. "We could go with Adelina if you don't feel comfortable with me."
The radiant heat on her cheeks slowly spread to her neck and on both tips of her ears. "I can't date you, Nicolas. After bullying me to heaven and back? Hell, I even feel uncomfortable talking to you as it is."
"I'm sorry you feel this way. I'm sorry for being a jerk to you all these while. You see, I'm usually chill but Carlos and the rest be making me do crazy things." He added again hoping that she believed him.
"Then you cut yourself off from them. You don't have to hang out with them if they make you do things you're not comfortable with."
Crunching sounds caused them to turn their heads to see Adelina marching towards them. "Five minutes over, I added another five and you both weren't done talking. I'm coming to take her away from you."
"Sorry, I can't. I'm not done with talking to her."
Adelina gave him a good sweep over from top to bottom before doubling over in laughter. "You're even so lucky that I let her speak with you in the first place. Else, there is no way I'd let you step within two feet of her location. You can go ahead with your two faced friend, Carlos. I'm sure there's about two girls he kept arranged for you."
Nicolas took several steps back with his mouth agape. He didn't see her outburst coming. She was like a red dragon, always spitting fire and gobbling up anyone that stood in her way.
With an annoyed tsk, Adelina pulled Dolores out of his sight.
